Humphries win eliminates Aspinall at Grand Slam

Kieran Cleeves/PDC

Top seed Luke Humphries beat Nathan Aspinall to book his place in the knockout stages of the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton.

England’s Humphries averaged 102.62 in a superb display as he maintained his 100% record to top Group A.

Michael Smith, who beat American Alex Spellman 5-2, went through in second place.

It means an early exit for Aspinall, who can consider himself unfortunate to have come up against Humphries – who hit a nine-darter on Sunday – in this kind of form, given his 100.01 average and five 180s might often have been enough to win against a different opponent.

Former world champion Humphries will now face Jurjen van der Velde of the Netherlands in round two, which begins on Wednesday.

Chris Dobey will face 2023 world champion and fellow Englishman Smith in the next round after clinching first place in Group B with a 5-1 win over Martin Lukeman, despite averaging only 81.

Wales’ Gerwyn Price is also safely through after a 5-1 victory over Switzerland’s Stefan Bellmont that sees him win Group D following Ricky Evans’ 5-2 loss to fellow Englishman James Wade.

Meanwhile, already-eliminated Stephen Bunting suffered a third final-leg defeat on the spin as he lost 5-4 to Group C winner Luke Woodhouse.

Germany’s Martin Schindler is through after beating Alexis Toylo of the Philippines 5-2.

Celebrity Traitors’ Joe Marler shares how much he got paid and ‘not everyone got the same’

Despite prior claims that all Celebrity Traitors contestants took home a flat fee of £40k, finalist Joe Marler has revealed that he actually got paid much less…

Celebrity Traitors fan favourite Joe Marler has debunked the claim that all the show’s contestants all received a flat fee of £40,000. He in fact got thousands less than that, saying that he doesn’t believe everyone received the same amount.

The BBC treachery show took the nation by storm, with its final reaching a maximum audience of 12 million. Many wanted to know how much the stars got paid to take part. Richard Osman and Marina Hyde seemed to spill the beans on their podcast The Rest Is Entertainment, with the latter saying everyone got paid the same: £40,000.

“They were able to pay everybody a blanket £40k fee, right? I am spilling all my tea today. They’re paying them a £40k fee,” Marina said. However, Joe has now said this was not true.

When a reporter from The Times asked the ex-England rugby star what he was paid and said they’d heard it was £40,000, Joe said: “Yeah, Daisy [his wife] read that too. She said to me, ‘Hold on, I thought you only got 30?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I did.’”

He then added that he didn’t think they were all paid the same, but that it didn’t matter because £30,000 was still a lot of money. “No, I don’t think everyone got paid the same. But I’m not bothered. It was 30 grand whether you lasted two days or three weeks — a no-brainer.”

Joe did last three weeks. He made the final of the competition and, though the Faithfuls had played a terrible game so far and took several roundtables to catch even one Traitor, Joe seemed to have figured out that Cat Burns and Alan Carr were the remaining deceitful pair. His win seemed assured.

However, in the nail-biting finale, while he managed to convince Nick Mohammed and David Olusoga to banish Cat, he was unable to convince them to banish Alan. Instead, he found himself in the firing line and was voted out of the game. Ultimately, Alan won the game.

Joe’s intellect in the game and ability to accurately work out who each other Traitors were made him a favourite in the show. His ability to read people has also opened up more opportunities for him, as he has been able to start a new podcast call Joe Marler Will See You Now.

In the podcast, launching on 13 November, Joe invites celebrity guests to his ‘clinic’ for a pseudo-psychological evaluation. What starts as a simple Q&A soon descends into a mix of probing questions, ridiculous assessments and a examinations of personality traits.

Speaking about the podcast, Joe said: “I’ve always loved asking questions and learning new things. This new show lets me do it in the most surreal, unpredictable way. I can’t wait for people to see just how ridiculous, and surprisingly revealing, it’s going to be.”

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo dazzle at Wicked: For Good premiere in London

The Wicked: For Good London premiere was certainly a popular event, as loads of stars turned up to the film’s screening in Leicester Square this evening

Put on your ruby slippers – Wicked: For Good is almost here. The stars of the film, along with many other famous faces, headed to Leicester Square for the London premiere of the movie musical.

Wicked’s Elphaba and Glinda, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, both made appearances on the red carpet – which was actually a yellow bricked road. The pair took many photos together as they celebrated the release of the second instalment of Wicked.

Some fans worried Ariana wouldn’t make the premiere, as she had already missed the Brazil premiere due to flight delays. But thankfully the singer was able to make it to the UK for the London showing on Monday (10 November), and looked gorgeous in a sparkly black dress.

Nine tackles on Thursday, cancer surgery on Friday for Broncos’ Singleton

Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton played in their recent victory over Las Vegas Raiders despite being diagnosed with testicular cancer a few days earlier.

The 31-year-old had surgery last Friday to remove a cancerous tumor that was in its early stages – a day after he made nine tackles in the Broncos’ 10-7 win over the Raiders at Mile High Stadium.

In a post on his Instagram account, Singleton said his health concerns started over two weeks ago following a drug test that showed elevated levels of the hormone hcG in his system.

A visit to a urologist, who performed an ultrasound last week, revealed the presence of testicular cancer.

Singleton said he is on the road to recovery after an operation and predicted he will return to the field in “the coming weeks” as he awaits additional test results but has “a great prognosis”.

“I wrestled with sharing such personal information publicly,” Singleton said.

“But the fact is, if it helps one person decide to pay closer attention to their body, then it is well worth it.

How content creator became scout in Serie A

Getty Images

Everyone on social media is an expert.

Or so they would have you believe. But every so often, that might just be the case.

Serie A side Como 1907 certainly seem to think so, having recently hired 20-year-old Felix Johnston as a first-team scout.

It is a remarkable step for Johnston, who until recently was a Chelsea content creator on X, highlighting and providing analysis on the brightest stars at the club’s academy.

Now he is helping find players to improve a side managed by former Chelsea, Arsenal and Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas in Italy’s top flight.

“It’s been a long journey,” Johnston told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club.

“It started with my friend messaging my during lockdown saying ‘you need to get on Twitter, that’s where everyone is talking about football’.

“I took it kind of seriously, built up a following and where it really started was when I discovered the Chelsea academy.

“I fell in love with watching the academy games, seeing the young players come through. It was what I was known for, my niche on Twitter.”

From there he began to do his own scouting of players, and Chelsea’s youth-focused transfer strategy gave him plenty to get stuck into.

“Suddenly their model was all about signing young players so I was staying up until 2am watching Kendry Paez at the Under-17 World Cup, Estevao, then finding talents of my own,” Johnston added.

“I got a bit of recognition, including from some people in the game, and that made scouting a reality to me. Prior to that, it was just truly a passion.”

It is in the past six months that things have really moved on for Johnston.

His first step into professional football came in April when he was hired by Danish team Vejle as a scouting consultant before, at the end of July, Como got in touch.

“The director of recruitment [at Como] reached out to me on Twitter saying he liked what I was tweeting and that he would like to do an internship and find some modern, younger scouts to bring into the club,” Johnston said.

“I was obviously very happy to go along with that and nine weeks later, I got the job.”

So having got the dream job, what is Johnston – who is combining the role with his university studies in Milan – being tasked with at Como?

“The director of recruitment who hired me was the head of data at his previous club, AZ Alkmaar, and is a very data-focused guy,” he said.

“My role, essentially, is that I get passed down data players, watch them on the eye and do a report.

“I look at the players they ask me to look at. But it’s an all-encompassing role, not restricted by any region or position.”

Five full games is usually considered enough for Johnston to compile an initial report – although that can vary.

“If they play for a low possession side and they’ve not really touched the ball, then I’ll need to watch more just for more evidence,” he explained.

His is not the traditional way into the game, but Johnston says Como are a “very forward-thinking club” who “want to get the new talent on the scene”.

With the club seventh in just their second year back in Serie A, it is an approach that seems to be working.

Meanwhile, Johnston’s big tip for the future is 16-year-old Deinner Ordonez.

“[Ordonez] is a centre-back at Independiente del Valle in Ecuador – the academy that Moises Caicedo came through. They’ve had a lot of talents and he’s very talented.”

US Democrats recovered support from Muslim voters, poll suggests

Muslim voters in the United States overwhelmingly favoured Democratic candidates in last week’s elections, amid mounting anger at President Donald Trump’s policies, a new exit poll suggests.

The survey, released by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on Monday, shows 97 percent of Muslim voters in New York backed democratic socialist Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

Virginia’s Democratic Muslim American Senator Ghazala Hashmi also received 95 percent of the Muslim vote in the state in her successful bid for lieutenant governor, according to the poll.

Non-Muslim, more centrist Democratic candidates received strong backing from Muslim voters as well, the CAIR study showed.

Virginia’s Abigail Spanberger and New Jersey’s Mikie Sherrill – Democratic congresswomen who won the gubernatorial races – both received about 85 percent support from Muslim voters, according to the survey.

California’s Proposition 50, which approved a congressional map that favours Democrats, won 90 percent support from Muslim voters, the poll suggested.

CAIR said it interviewed 1,626 self-identified Muslim respondents for the survey.

The group said the results showed high turnout from Muslim voters.

“These exit poll results highlight an encouraging truth: American Muslims are showing up, speaking out, and shaping the future of our democracy,” the group said in a statement.

“Across four states, Muslim voters demonstrated remarkable engagement and commitment to the civic process, casting ballots that reflect their growing role as active participants in American life.”

The November 4 election, one year ahead of the 2026 midterm elections that will determine control of Congress, offered a boost for Democrats.

But the race for New York, which saw Trump endorse former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, saw a spike of Islamophobic rhetoric, particularly from Republican lawmakers and commentators.

CAIR said Muslim voters showed that they are rising up in “the face of anti-Muslim bigotry” to “build a better future for themselves and their neighbors, proving that participation, not prejudice, defines our nation’s strength”.

The survey’s results show that the Democrats are recovering the support of some Muslim voters who deserted the party in last year’s presidential election due to former President Joe Biden’s uncompromising support for Israel amid the brutal assault on Gaza.

CAIR said it recorded 76 Muslim candidates in last week’s election, 38 of whom won.

In Michigan, the Detroit suburbs of Hamtramck, Dearborn and Dearborn Heights elected Muslim mayors in the polls.
