Welsh professional rugby is still able to play two derbies on the same day, and Cardiff and Ospreys were among the crowds on Friday for celebrations.

Sporting action took centre stage on Boxing Day with a pair of hard-fought United Rugby Championship (URC) fixtures, with uncertainty from Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) plans to cut the professional men’s teams from four to three forgotten for 80 minutes.

In a ding-dong encounter with Dragons at Arms Park, Cardiff won a penalty in the 87th minute to extend their rivals’ winning streak to 22-19.

Ospreys’ recent revival came to a painful end when Scarlets won 26-19 with a consolation bonus and the home side scored with the clock in the red.

Wales is lifted by fit-again Cardiff duo.

Mason Grady charges down the left wing for Cardiff against DragonsPicture agency for Huw Evans

Even though they were without wing Mason Grady for the majority of it and Evergreen number eight Taulupe Faletau for the majority of it, Cardiff did well in their first game of the season.

Grady suffered a shoulder injury in pre-season and returned at the end of November, while Faletau missed the start of the campaign and then suffered a knee injury just minutes into his second appearance.

The wing was recognized as the match’s official man after enjoying numerous potent lateral turns and powerful clenches.

Coach Corniel Van Zyl praised him for moving forward at full speed and defeating defenders.

Diminutive Cardiff wing Tom Bowen was hugely influential in the first block of the URC but Josh Adams and Grady have been given the nod out wide of late.

On Scrum V, former Cardiff and Dragons scrum half Richie Rees remarked, “They were big impacts, big carries into opposite numbers making gain lines.”

“It’s his (Grady’s) physicality and yards in the carry,” he said. He is putting people on their backsides and has been impressive over the last couple of weeks, the key thing is to keep him fit”.

Faletau, who is undoubtedly the best Dragons player in their history but who is now working for himself in Cardiff, remained influential for an hour before being replaced by Alun Lawrence, who has a stellar season and leads the URC in tackles and carries.

They faced Test regular Aaron Wainwright, who made a few uncharacteristic errors, including a costly ball rip when carrying it close range.

Arguments made by the defense

Owen Watkin tackles Johnny Williams in Ospreys' derby at ScarletsPicture agency for Huw Evans

Mark Jones, head coach for Ospreys, claims that their four-place improvement against Scarlets was due to a tenacious defense.

“I’m pleased for the boys”, said Jones. “We didn’t play at our best, especially with the ball,” he said. That was probably our best defensive performance, though, without it.

” You go back to Tips (defence coach Justin Tipuric), your defence represents the heart of the team and the commitment of the team and the coach. You can tell from the boys how excellent they were there.

“We had a great deal of love for one another. We know we can play better and we will play better.

The most crucial aspect of the film was being a “person” rather than “a character.”

“The entire team brought out the Ospreys’ culture. These boys are special and it’s an absolute privilege to play a part in their careers and coach them”.

Wales’ flanker Harri Deaves won the match’s MVP award, but Ospreys gained from Owen Watkin’s international centre’s skillful organizing of the visitors’ defense.

Owen has been away for a while, and I have confidence in him, Jones said.

“I had no hesitation and putting him out there this week.

You can tell from his example how valuable he is to the team, and how effective he was at putting up some defensive pressure in the 13 channel.

Che gives real hope to dragons.

Che Hope celebrates scoring for Dragons at Cardiff in the URCPicture agency for Huw Evans

Che Hope, a scrum-half for the Dragons, doubled in his debut game against Connacht to win the nine jerseys in Cardiff.

Hope ran excellent support lines to score, was lively around the pitch and also feisty, notably giving the experienced Aled Davies some verbals towards the end of the first half.

Due to his heroics with Newport, with whom he helped to win the Super Rygbi Cymru title in 2024 and 252, the 22-year-old from Hollybush has long been a watchable character.

He made his Dragons debut in November 2022, and he appears to have surpassed close friend Morgan Lloyd, who performed at Arms Park last season, as his main rival in the league against experienced Rhodri Williams.

“He’s electric, he’s a little bit of a young Tomos Williams, playing off the cuff”, said attack coach Richie Rees before kick-off.

Hope will aim to start playing in the upcoming weeks with improved game management and added experience, as demonstrated by his willingness to go beyond being just another option to boost energy off the bench.

For the first time since 2015, the Dragons were unable to win three games on the bounce.

Scarlets return to their absolute lowest point.

After watching his side lose to local rivals Ospreys, Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel was unable to hide his frustration and fall back at the bottom of the URC table.

“I’m gutted about the result because I felt like we were in a good spot going into it”, said Peel.

“We turned a lot of ball over there, and if we had been accurate, we might have had dominance.”

“We got going quickly. In the first 20 minutes we had all the territory and possession, but we couldn’t get over the line.

In the second half, we weren’t competing. So there are some things that we might not like as much as we remember when we review the game.

Peel is hoping his captain Josh Macleod will return for the New Year’s Day derby trip to face Dragons at Rodney Parade.

The flanker suffered a head knock before the Ospreys lost to Cardiff before Christmas after suffering the defeat.

He’s been playing really well, Peel said. “From a leadership perspective, and you do miss him as a quality player. I’m optimistic that he’ll be okay for the week ahead.

As a result of the table’s 16th place Scarlets facing a Dragons side one position above them, there will be another basement battle.

Supporters in the stands at Parc y ScarletsPicture agency for Huw Evans

Welsh professional rugby fans are eager to watch.

Cardiff and Llanelli played host to derbies on 26 December and the action will be in Newport and Bridgend on New Year’s Day.

Before Christmas, Scarlets outran the hosts in The Arms Park, and this time the Blue and Blacks slipped into victory in front of a packed crowd.

Cardiff announced a sold-out crowd of 12, 125 tickets, and Dragons head coach Filo Tiatia praised the atmosphere.

“The crowd was amazing, for Cardiff and the Dragons”, said Tiatia, an Ospreys legend from his playing days. At the conclusion, it turned into a singing contest.

It was encouraging to see where the game is headed with local fans and supporters supporting their teams, they said.

“That’s what we want for derbies – that they are competitive, grounds are sold out and the game is growing. The tribalism of the regions are at odds with it.

More than 12 000 people showed up at Parc y Scarlets, and Ospreys head coach Jones, who won, hopes to see more of these opportunities as the WRU attempts to shave a professional side.

“You could tell it was a west Wales derby and long may they continue”, said Jones.

“These occasions are significant. To see your players and coaches arriving at the end of the game and meeting their families on the terrace over the far side.

” With so many of them and fans turning up when they could be doing all sorts at this time of the year, but they choose to come down and support their team.

It is incredible, I say. In the derby, we discussed how to use emotion and the emotional side of the game.

Helen Flanagan’s ‘up and down’ Christmas without the kids after sweary row with ex Scott

Helen Flanagan, a performer in a Liverpool pantomime, has posted an emotional Instagram post about being without her three kids over Christmas.

Helen Flanagan has candidly shared her struggles with an “up and down” festive season without her children amidst a spat with the father of her kids, Scott Sinclair. The 35 year old former Coronation Street star took to Instagram to shed light on her emotional state following her public criticism of the ex-footballer’s parenting decisions.

Helen recently made no mince words when she described her ex-partner as a “piece of s**t” because he didn’t want to see their son’s nativity play in Abu Dhabi. She posted a picture of herself sitting on a chair in a pink halterneck top while putting the drama to rest for a moment.

In her honest caption, Helen, who is currently playing the Wicked Queen in Liverpool’s Snow White pantomime over the holiday season, wrote: “Been a bit up and down mood wise the past few days. So not really been on my social so thought we could have a catch up.”

She then shared a nostalgic photo from last year’s Christmas celebrations with her three children Matilda, 10, Delilah, seven, and Charlie, four. Helen ended her relationship with her former fiancé in 2022 after being together for 13 years. She continued: “I struggled with the kids going for Christmas a few days before they went.”

“I am aware that today is just a day. They left on the 22nd, but I won’t hear back until I’ve finished the panto. She continued, “This was last year at my mother’s,” referring to the photo. These past few days have been a little up and down in terms of mood.

It’s been a rocky road for parents-of-three, Helen and Scott, who called time on their relationship in 2022. Just last week, Helen called Scott “a piece of s**t” in the scathing rant, said to be the “final straw” for Helen three years after ending her relationship with the footballer.

Despite their split, Helen has made a lot of efforts to ensure that she has the upper hand when it comes to giving their children gifts and celebrations.

In a revealing new interview with Closer magazine, Helen didn’t hold back when discussing her ex’s role in parenting. She admitted that while the two of them have to coordinate gifts for their children, she isn’t shy about taking control. “Oh, we have to discuss buying gifts for the kids,” she explained.

If we bought the same item, it would really irritate me. I’m not sure if Scott would actually shop for the kids; he’s a man. His mother probably does it, but he is completely useless. So I simply let him know what I’m purchasing, and that’s it.

Helen’s candid comments are sure to stir the pot, highlighting a dynamic that’s less than friendly. Meanwhile, Scott has yet to publicly respond to her latest remarks, leaving the speculation and gossip mill running at full speed.

Helen shocked fans when she learned that Scott and she had split after going through a “rough patch” and moving into a new home in Cheshire a year later.

After finally calling it quits after a number of reconciliations, she spoke to Charlotte Dawson on her podcast last year and insisted that she and Scott did love each other, but ‘didn’t like each other at all’.

Lifting the lid on their rocky relationship, Helen said: “I still love him very much, I care about him deeply, but we don’t like each other. We don’t like each other at all, we don’t get on. I do know that Scott – he’d never admit it – cares about me too and he does love me.”

She continued, “I took the p*** out of him because he had a bucket hat on, and I thought it was quite funny the last time I saw him.” I believe he made an effort to not laugh.

The Rosie Webster star spoke of her sadness over her split earlier this year when she told The Sun: “Breaking up is so sad, and it’s better for your mental health and 100% better for the kids. “

Helen and Scott’s relationship is notoriously secretive, but the actress admitted that the two still have a relationship. However, the actress acknowledged that the two still have a relationship.

Millie Bobby Brown’s stylist recommends this £5 spray to keep hair protected ahead of TV filming

Millie Bobby Brown, who promoted her fifth season of the popular television show Stranger Things, looked flawless on The Tonight Show sporting flawless hair.

Some of us are still wondering how Millie Bobby Brown manages to have her hair look so luxurious and healthy after the eagerly awaited fifth and final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things. We now know the secret to her luscious locks thanks to her hairstylist.

Pete Burkill, Millie’s stylist, revealed on his social media page that he has a brand he has always suggested to all of his clients to ensure shiny and nourished curls, posting: “I’ve always recommended MONDAY to my clients. Additionally, the company is incredibly affordable, with Boots’ highly rated Leave-In Conditioner selling for less than £5.

Kate Middleton re-wears a chic suede handbag on Christmas Day, which is still available.

This spray is a fan favorite from the brand’s haircare line, even though it’s not known if it was Millie’s hairstylist used it on her the night she appeared on The Tonight Show.

This leave-in conditioner is described as a multitasker that promotes longer, healthier hair while also being highly hydrating and protecting against heat and breakage. This leave-in treatment leaves hair feeling soft, shiny, and frizz-free thanks to hyaluronic acid, which helps maintain moisture levels, as well as shea butter, wheat protein, and jojoba and almond oils.

This product has a pH-balanced, dermatologically tested, and SLS-free formula. Additionally, MONDAY Haircare is a Leaping Bunny program-approved brand that doesn’t test on animals and is PETA-certified.

This haircare gem has received a lot of customer praise because it costs only £5. Works very well with my 4c hair, according to a 5-star reviewer. When the conditioner is dry, my hair often clumps together like a comb. This one is excellent value for money. After my hair is dry, I apply a little bit of conditioner to dampened hair to prevent clumping.

Another customer remarks, “I really like it, but I wasn’t expecting it.” This had been very helpful for me because I had naturally frizzy hair. I usually use it after towel-drying my hair because I enjoy the smell and silkiness. “Cute packaging”

And a third customer beams, “My hair feels soft, smooth, and much easier to manage thanks to this leave-in conditioner.” It leaves no greasy residue, leaving a strong, fresh scent. Since using it, I’ve seen less frizz and more shine, so I’m sure to add it to my routine.

Although the customer offended, noting: “I’ve been using the Monday Leave-In Conditioner for a few weeks, and I think it’s okay — but I haven’t really noticed any noticeable difference in my hair. Although it has a nice scent and a light texture, I’m happy with how it turned out, the results haven’t been very good. After using it, my hair doesn’t feel particularly hydrated or smooth, and there hasn’t been any noticeable reduction in frizz or manageability. Although it’s not a bad product, it just didn’t give me the results I wanted. It might work better for other types of hair, but for me, it’s “average.”

However, this customer, who calls it “Absolutely amazing! “, receives a lot of praise. Would use again and again! Great scent, excellent texture, and great price. Use the pump bottle without slipping like some people tell you to, so use it as you please.

Another gushes, “Really enjoyed using this leave-in conditioning treatment. Over the past four weeks of using it, I’ve noticed a significant change. My hair feels stronger and more nourished. I really like the packaging, but the tiny little stopper at the top of the bottle where the product is released would be a big help. Great value for money, but “my hair is so soft after a conditioning treatment”!

Lisa Riley reveals key to her inspirational weight loss after I’m A Celeb star shed 12 stone

Lisa Riley, an Emmy Award winner, has stated that she won’t be raising a glass of champagne to celebrate the new year because completely abstaining from alcohol has been the key to sensational transformation.

Fresh from her emotional stint in the I’m A Celebrity jungle, Emmerdale actress Lisa Riley is going into the New Year happier than ever – and there won’t be a glass of bubbly in sight. The star, who lost 20lb during her time in the camp, ditched alcohol 10 years ago, with a source telling new the decision has transformed her life.

She feels really good after quitting alcohol. She is awake in the morning, has no feelings of depression, according to the source. Without it, she is actually enjoying life.

Lisa explained how her drinking escalated after her mother Cath passed away from cancer in 2012 while she was in the jungle. She admitted to using alcohol to numb her pain in a private conversation with her campmates. She said, “I genuinely couldn’t cope,” describing booze as “the biggest plaster I could put on myself,” in response to her passing.

Lisa has previously stated that drinking was the only thing that brought her to peace because of the impact her loss of her beloved mother had had on her. She remarked, “The wine really, really did take the edge off. Because I wasn’t content with myself, I became a little bit of a grey cloud.

The 49-year-old soap star admitted to regularly consuming “three bottles of Malbec every night” while remarking, “Mentally, I needed it.” However, according to our source, Lisa has never looked back since embracing sobriety, and her love-up, booze-free lifestyle has completely changed her fortunes.

According to the source, “Lisa’s secret to happiness is being sober, but also the love of her man, and just really enjoying every moment of life.” She “had a few downs” last year, and I believe she did, in some ways, appreciate everything, especially the little things in life.

Lisa has been with her American musician boyfriend Al since 2014, after meeting through friends. The pair got engaged four years later, with delighted Lisa writing on Instagram that her fiancé is “my soul mate and best mate and love of my life”.

She continued, “Al is the best thing that has ever happened to me… we are just happy together, and we haven’t had any issues, just firmed our togetherness.” Our source explained why they are such good partners, and said, “He is really supportive. He tells her how wonderful she is and that he truly loves her. When Al visited her in the camp, you could tell how adorable they are together. He simply encourages her, and whatever brings him joy is what brings him joy.

Opening up earlier this year about the life-changing moment when she decided to go sober, Lisa said, “I had my last ever drink in a pub in Bury. I was in The Clarence with relatives, reminiscing about my mum one August. We drank a lot and I said to myself, ‘I’m not doing this any more.’ I set myself a challenge to stop drinking until Christmas.

There was pressure to drink at a family baptism in October, but that was everyone else’s problem, not mine. Then I began to think about how long I could go before getting a little obsessed and fixated on the numbers.

On August 19, the actress celebrated a decade of sobriety, saying she “has never felt better.” She said, “I’ve realized how brilliant my life is and don’t need it [alcohol]”. I just don’t need, like, or want it any more, which is not like I’ve ever experienced.

Lisa says her partner still drinks, but she doesn’t mind at all, saying, “Some people find it weird, but I’ve always had a big personality and don’t need a drink to shine.” As well as working wonders for her relationship and her mental health, being teetotal helped Lisa keep the weight off. She’s trimmer than ever following her I’m A Celeb success.

She feels really fit and healthy after losing so much weight in the jungle, according to our source. In a lot of ways, that program really helped her. Everyone approached her because she believed she was the real mummy of the jungle, and it’s given her a real boost in confidence. Additionally, she has never felt better physically. Her skin is flawless, her appearance is flawless, and she intends to keep it up.

Lisa “wants to capitalize on her success and pursue other projects outside of Emmerdale, which she has starred in for 30 years,” according to the source. According to our source, Lisa has big plans for 2026. She desires to give more presentations. She’s got this new confidence from being in the jungle, and she’d like to do more in fashion, something new.

They added, “She doesn’t want to be known just as a Mandy Dingle. She’d love to work on This Morning and is hoping ITV will look at her as being like a Cilla Black sort of person. She showed her tender, soft side on the show, so she’s hoping ITV might give her a break.”

With new friend Vogue Williams offering encouragement, keeping in shape is also a top priority going forward.

Our insider said that Lisa wants to keep losing weight. She has really examined her weight loss and feelings of accomplishment. She adapted Vogue’s exercise routine for camp. She desires a healthy lifestyle. She is making a fresh start, really.

Somalia demands Israel withdraw Somaliland recognition

The move, which Somaliland has criticized as an “aggression that will never be tolerated,” has been demanded by Somaliland.

In an interview on Saturday, Somalia’s state minister for foreign affairs, Ali Omar, stated in an interview that the government would use all legal means to challenge what it termed “state aggression” and Israeli interference in the country’s internal affairs.

list of 4 itemsend of list

The immediate condemnation followed Israel’s declaration to be the first country in the world to officially recognize Somaliland, which sparked furious protests in Arab and African countries, and raised questions about whether the remark was intended as part of an alleged Israeli plot to forcibly displaced Palestinians.

Following a brutal civil war, Somaliland split away from Somalia in 1991, but it has never received recognition from any of the United Nations. Although its eastern territories are still up for debate, the self-declared republic has its own currency, flag, and parliament.

Omar remarked that this will never be tolerated or acceptable for our country’s people who are committed to protecting our territorial integrity. The State of Israel is strongly advised by our government to rescind its conflicting policies and abide by international law.

Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, president of Somalia, was making it clear for weeks that an unnamed state would soon grant recognition, even though he had not specified which nation. In recent weeks, billboards had been dotted throughout the capital of Somalia, Hargeisa, to warn residents that recognition was on the way.

Omar claimed that foreign interference and interest were being fueled by the Horn of Africa’s strategic significance. “This region’s significance is not new. He continued, “It is still significant for international trade today.”

Palestinian displacement

Omar claimed that Israel wanted to evict Palestinians from Gaza further by pursuing Somaliland’s recognition. He told Al Jazeera, “One of the motivating factors is the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza.” Israel’s position on that matter has been widely known.

The foreign ministry of Palestine supported Somalia, citing Israel’s prior designation of Somaliland as a potential “red line” for forcibly displacing Palestinians from Gaza.

The Israeli move was “not directed against any state, nor does it pose a threat to regional peace,” according to Somaliland’s Cirro on Saturday.

Somalia’s prime minister’s office issued a statement a few hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the recognition on Friday, blaming Israel’s actions as a deliberate violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and as an unlawful step, and highlighting the fact that Somaliland is still a significant and “indissociable” part of Somaliland.

Netanyahu said he would support Somaliland’s cause during his meeting with US President Donald Trump on Monday, and that the diplomatic arrangement with Somaliland was in keeping with the Abraham Accords. Cirro has also been invited to Israel by Netanyahu, which the latter has accepted.

Trump, however, has distanced himself from close ally Netanyahu on the subject, telling The New York Post he would not act in Israel’s place.

Ayub Ismail Yusuf, the prime minister of Somalia, thanked Trump for his support, saying, “Thank you for your support, Mr. President.”

Trump’s statements marked a change from his earlier statements from August, when he stated at a press conference that his administration was working on the Somaliland problem. The US president has frequently attacked the Somali community in recent weeks.

The US has also expressed frustration with Somalia, claiming at a recent UN Security Council meeting that the country’s government had failed to improve security despite receiving billions of dollars in aid and that it will no longer support a pricey peacekeeping mission.

In addition, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, the African Union’s president, objected to any initiative that would allow for the recognition of Somaliland as an independent nation, fearing that it would set a dangerous precedent with repercussions apprehensive. The fundamental principle of the continental bloc was cited as a 1964 decision on the intangibility of borders inherited at a nation’s independence.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the secretary-general of the Arab League, also criticized what he termed an Arab and African state’s provocative assault on Israeli territory. He claimed that the recognition of Israel was a flagrant violation of international law.

Despite the international reactions, thousands of people poured onto Hargeisa’s streets on Friday to mark the diplomatic transition that many saw as close to 30 years. Residents of the country applauded the breakthrough, and the Israeli flag was emblazoned on the national museum.

Israel’s prior diplomatic ties to Somalia’s regional rival Ethiopia have contributed to the country’s historically contentious relations with it.

Israel provided military training, weapons, and intelligence to Ethiopia during the Cold War, while Somalia, a country that had ties to Arab nations, was defeated in the Ogaden War in 1977, a setback that contributed to decades of civil unrest.

Following years of persecution under former leader Mohammed Siad Barre, Somalia officially renounced its relationship with Somalia in 1991.

Israeli deputy foreign minister Sharren Haskel revealed earlier this month that the government of Somalia and the Israeli government had spoken about their shared concerns about Houthi influence in the area.

England win chaotic fourth Ashes Test against Australia in Melbourne

With a gutsy four-wicket victory, England’s first Test match on Australian soil since 15 years ended a tense fourth Ashes encounter that was all but over on Saturday.

Following the 20 wickets that fell on day one, the pumped-up tourists quickly dismissed Australia for 132 in front of a crowded 92, 045 crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

With Harry Brook and Jamie Smith both unbeaten on 18 and Jamie Smith on three, they were chasing 175 to win, with the “Barmy Army” of fans roaring in droves as they came home with six wickets lost.

Zak Crawley contributed 40 and Jacob Bethell contributed 37.

England’s captain Ben Stokes described the tour as “a good feeling” and “a tough one to follow.”

Many thanks must go to the players, staff, and management for keeping the focus on cricket in the wake of the build-up to the Test, which was a lot thrown our way, in order to put in a performance on the back of it and defeat a very good Australian team.

“Very proud,” We exhibited bravery and bravery.

England suffered a devastating defeat in their first three Test matches and was under enormous pressure in Melbourne as a result of concerns over their limited preparation and claims of excessive drinking during a mid-series beach break.

But they did succeed, and they will head to Sydney for their fifth and final Test, brimming with confidence.

England had lost 16 of its previous eight Tests in Australia in January 2011 at Sydney, and openers Crawley and Ben Duckett had made it clear that they wanted to end the streak, “play ultra-aggressive” Bazball “style.”

In his first over, Duckett hit a boundary over Mitchell Starc, and Crawley hit Michael Neser for six and four in a row.

They had a fantastic opening partnership of fifty and Duckett was bowled for 34 by a Starc yorker.

Brydon Carse, a fast bowler, replaced Bethell in the middle with a surprise number three.

However, Carse’s pinch-hitting experiment in England failed because it only involved eight balls before sending Jhye Richardson to Cameron Green.

After a nasty knock, Crawley lost to Scott Boland, and Bethell was caught by Usman Khawaja from the same bowler.

By the time only 10 runs were required, Brook and Smith had already provided the run, Richardson had trapped Joe Root for 15 and Starc had accounted for Ben Stokes for two.

Steve Smith, the captain of Australia, said, “It was a challenging game.

“The situation might have been different if we had won both innings by getting 50-60 more.” The wicket played as anticipated, but once the ball softened, things didn’t turn out as expected.

When 36 wickets are lost in two days, he continued, citing the MCG pitch’s “tightness”

On Saturday, William West [AFP] led England in the second innings with 40 runs scored from just 46 balls.

Pitch criticized

After taking 20 wickets on a blistering opening day of searing pace, the hosts were dismissed for 152 and England were only allowed to take 110. Australia resumed with a 4-0 in their second innings.

Since 1909, there have been more wickets taken on an Ashes Test first day than on the series opener in Perth.

It was a bowler’s dream come true with 10mm of grass on the track, but many former Olympians have criticized the pitch for “doing too much” and being unfair to the batters.

Gus Atkinson was bowled by Nightwatchman Boland, who had pushed him to the wicketkeeper Smith, but the bowler quickly left the field with his left hamstring.

Jake Weatherald whipped his full ball for three as Josh Tongue, who had already taken the final two wickets for Australia on day one, brought a hat-trick into the attack.

Weatherald had to get a good knock to secure his position at the top of the order, but he failed once more when he was bowled by Stokes for five, leaving a delivery that slammed in the back.

Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head were the only ones Root’s caught in the slips off the Tongue allowed to make.

When Khawaja (0) and Alex Carey (4) left in nine balls, England had the same momentum as before the bowled on 46 by a peach of a delivery from Carse that beat the outside edge.

With the score of 119, Green (19), who had a 98-6 advantage over Harry Brook, edged a rising Stokes ball to Harry Brook for slip, to become the seventh wicket to fall.

Without allowing a score, Carse defeated Neser and Starc, and Steve Smith fell to Stokes for 13 runs in the final four wickets, leaving Steve Smith unbeaten on 24.
