Autumn Nations Series

Ireland (17) 41

Tries: Crowley, Timoney, Porter, G McCarthy, P McCarthy, O’Brien Cons: Crowley 2, Prendergast 2 Pens: Crowley

Japan (10) 10

Ireland outlasted a tenacious Japan side to win 41-10 in a largely underwhelming autumn Test in Dublin.

After last week’s loss to New Zealand, the victory represents a first win of the autumn for Ireland and, after his British and Irish Lions sabbatical, a first with Andy Farrell at the helm since November 2024.

It did, however, come courtesy of a far from convincing first-half performance with Ireland scoring three tries in the final 13 minutes to put a gloss on the scoreline.

While tries from Jack Crowley and Nick Timoney, as well as seven points from the boot of the former, had the hosts in a 17-0 lead after half an hour, Japan played had plenty of enterprising rugby and were rewarded by Kenji Sato’s score three minutes before the break.

Eddie Jones’ visitors could not exert the same influence on the second half, failing to score in the second period and tries from front row forwards Andrew Porter, Gus McCarthy and Paddy McCarthy, as well as wing Tommy O’Brien, saw Ireland pull away in the second half.

Returning to Aviva Stadium for the first time since a comprehensive Six Nations defeat by France in March, Ireland did not initially get the response they hoped after last weekend’s loss at the hands of the All Blacks in Chicago.

Head coach Farrell made eight changes to his starting side but, as has often been the theme for his rotated sides in past Novembers, there was a distinct lack of rhythm in attack.

The early kick-off and a rare less-than-capacity crowd certainly gave a low-key feel but, after Japan dug themselves out of a 17-0 deficit to trail just 17-10 at half-time, there was no doubt that Ireland were in a genuine battle.

The visitors – who famously beat Ireland at their own World Cup in 2019 – arrived in Dublin off the back of a 61-7 drubbing at the hands of South Africa in Wembley last week but this did not have the same one-sided feel until the closing minutes.

Against New Zealand, Ireland’s set-piece struggled which in turn denied the side attacking opportunities through a game in which they managed just one try.

That their first line-out of the day was overthrown and resulted in a turnover did not hint at much of an improvement.

Even still, after the Irish pack made a considerably more encouraging start at the scrum, it was a surprise to see the hosts opt to kick for the posts after five minutes rather than trust their work out of touch to set up a maul.

Japan saw plenty of ball in the early stages – as evidenced by the necessity for O’Brien to make a pair of breakdown turnovers in the opening quarter of an hour – but their momentum was stalled by centre Charlie Lawrence’s yellow card for a dangerous tackle in the 17th minute.

Tries through Crowley and Timoney either side of Lawrence’s return would have been expected to settle what had been a nervy beginning, but Ireland’s response to their 17-0 was a poor one.

In the final passage of the first half, Ireland’s Jacob Stockdale was shown a yellow card with his side left to face the first 10 minutes after the restart a man light.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Ireland secured the first points of the second half when, after a much more purposeful passage of play, Andrew Porter barged over from close range.

The 12-point lead, and the return of Stockdale from the sin-bin, was the call for Farrell to go to his bench for the first time with brothers Sam and Cian Prendergast, as well as Jack Conan, entering the game.

After a disappointing impact from last week’s replacements, Ireland at least had the better of the final quarter here.

Hooker Gus McCarthy, on in place of Ronan Keller, finished off a maul score to make the game safe with 13 minutes remaining, while his fellow replacement and namesake Paddy McCarthy followed him across the whitewash five minutes later.

There was still time for Tommy O’Brien to score a counter-attacking try to round out the scoring in the closing moments with the final flurry giving the impression of a much more convincing victory.

A year ago, the disappointment of defeat by New Zealand to start the autumn felt as if it bleed across the next three weekends despite Irish wins over Argentina, Fiji and Australia.

This was not an 80 minutes to dispel the notion that history could repeat itself.

Shona McGarty shares cryptic post after split as she prepares for I’m A Celeb

Former EastEnders actress Shona McGarty is heading to Australia to take part in this year’s I’m A Celeb but took time to share an emotive post before she jets off

Former EastEnders star Shona McGarty has shared a cryptic post on social media ahead of her stint in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! The actress recently split from her fiancé David Bracken and appears to be doing some reflecting on life before she jets out to Australia.

Shona, 34, posted a black and white video to her Instagram where she is seen applying her make-up while giving an emotive silent performance and removing the makeup again before the clip turns to colour. Shona shared a long caption alongside the clip, with lyrics from her new song Unapologetically Me.

She wrote, “I’m finally learning to just be me, no filters, no apologies, no shrinking to make others comfortable. It’s a new beginning, and this time I’m stepping into life with open arms and an open heart. I’ve spent too long second-guessing, dimming my light, trying to fit into spaces that were never meant for me.

“But now, it’s about freedom, being comfortable in my own skin, owning my story, singing LOUD, with all my flaws, and my fire. This is the start of really living, fully and authentically. From here on out, …I’m .. ‘unapologetically me’.”

Shona is one of the stars who is rumoured to be heading to Australia for I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here’s upcoming series.

Shona – who is best known for her portrayal of Whitney Dean on the BBC soap – reportedly split from David after a year-long engagement. The pair got engaged in the summer of 2024 but have now apparently called off their engagement.

A source told The Sun, “They are on amicable terms, but have ended their romantic relationship. There are no hard feelings, they realised they wanted different things and are better off as friends. Shona is now focusing on her music and career.”

The pair met on TikTok just over two years ago and David, who is best known as a member of Blessed, popped the question during a romantic picnic in that took place in Kensington, West London. Although, at the time, things almost went awry when the police turned up.

At the time, David said: “I went over to the police, who said, ‘Sorry we are just closing up the park’. I said, ‘Would you mind giving me five minutes as I am about to propose to my partner?’

“He looked at his watch and said, ‘Of course, and best of luck!” So, I told Shona to go stand at the waterfall in the park. I then put on our favourite song and had a dance with her before getting down on one knee.”

Shona then noted that she was none the wiser about how David’s proposal was almost scuppered at the last minute. She said: “David went over to speak to them and I had no idea what he said because I was just eating cheese and crackers.”

In an exclusive joint interview with OK! announcing their engagement, Shona and David said that the location of the proposal made it even more special.

David had picked a tranquil corner of the park called Kyoto Garden – somewhere that means a lot to Shona.

She explained: “I love Japanese culture and the spirituality of it. He brought a picnic which was really sweet. It was lovely, I was in my element but I didn’t think he was going to propose at all.”

Soludo Alleges Plot To Rig Election Results In Anambra Poll

The incumbent Governor of Anambra State and Candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has hinted at an alleged plan to rig the ongoing gubernatorial election in the state.

He alleged while casting his vote on Saturday at Polling Unit 002, Umuezeadigo Street in Isuofia, Aguata LGA.

Although the APGA candidate did not mention the name of the party involved, the APGA candidate said the plotters plan to “swap election results”.

“The only thing we hear that is actually a concern, and we hope won’t happen, is that one party (he laughs) has written results to swap during the collation process.

“We hear they have even had meetings with INEC not to upload the results so that they can have the opportunity to manipulate the results.”

He, however, said he was confident in the electoral system to deliver a free and fair election process.

“But we have confidence that the system will sort it all out.

“Our people are vigilant, organised and united. We will follow the process from the polling unit to collation at the ward, and from the ward to local governments and to the state.

“Once the system works, we do not doubt that we are gonna win the 21 local governments”, he said.

There are also six female deputy governorship candidates— Appolonia Ezeadili (Accord), Senator Uche Ekwunife (APC), Ebele Okeke (APP), Happiness Ugboma (BP), Veronica Okaro (LP), and Faith Obi (ZLP).

According to INEC, 2,802,790 registered voters are expected to vote across 5,718 polling units in the state’s 21 local government areas.

Why Davina McCall had twice the risk of breast cancer as some other women

Davina revealed she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has undergone surgery

Presenter Davina McCall has revealed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer, spotting a lump after checks recommended by friend and fellow TV host Lorraine Kelly. Davina underwent surgery three weeks ago to remove a lump.

The TV presenter shared a video on her Instagram page on Saturday revealing the news in the hope that it “might help someone”.

McCall said she found a lump a few weeks ago which “came and went” and was driven to get it checked after seeing posters urging women to “check your breasts” while working on ITV ’s Lorraine show.

She said: “I just wanted to tell you that I have had breast cancer. I found a lump a few weeks ago, and it came and went.” She added: “So I had a biopsy. I found out it was indeed breast cancer, and I had it taken out in a lumpectomy nearly three weeks ago … It was very, very small, so I got it very, very early, which is incredibly lucky, but I am so relieved to have had it removed, and to know that it hasn’t spread.”

Davina also said she had ‘dense breasts’, which is a risk factor in developing breast cancer and makes it harder to detect. Justin Stebbing, Professor of Biomedical Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University, said b reast density is a ‘significant yet often overlooked factor in breast cancer awareness, risk assessment and screening practices’

He said: ” Breast density refers to the proportions of glandular and connective tissue compared to fatty tissue in the breast, as seen on a mammogram. Simply put, dense breasts have more glandular and fibrous tissue and less fat. On a mammogram, both dense tissue and tumours appear white, making it harder to detect abnormalities in women with dense breasts.

“This masking effect can lead to cancers being missed during routine screening, which is why breast density is not just a risk factor for developing breast cancer, but also for having it go undetected until it is more advanced.”

Professor Stebbing said women with dense breasts face a higher risk of developing breast cancer compared to women with less dense, fattier breasts. He added: “A major study involving more than 33,000 women found that those with dense breasts were nearly twice as likely to develop breast cancer than those with low breast density.”

The increased risk is seen across both pre-menopausal younger women and post-menopausal older women, although the proportion of women. W omen with the lowest breast density have about a 6% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer after age 50, while those with the highest density face a risk closer to 15%.

While mammograms can detect nine out of ten cancers in women with mostly fatty breasts, the sensitivity drops to about seven out of ten in women with extremely dense breasts.

This means that tumours can be missed . Professor Stebbing told The Conversation : ” Breast density is now recognised as one of the most important risk factors for breast cancer, even as much as family history or other commonly discussed risk factors.”

About 40% of women fall into the higher density categories, and dense breasts are common in younger women, those taking hormone replacement therapy, and those with certain genetic backgrounds and ethnicities. Breast density can also be influenced by lifestyle and hormonal factors, and it tends to decrease with age and higher body mass index and obesity.

A recent UK survey showed that most women aren’t aware of their breast density. In the US, new regulations require that all women undergoing mammography be notified if they have dense breasts.

Professor Stebbing said: “It is important to remember that the majority of women with dense breasts will not develop breast cancer. Breast density is just one factor among many, and decisions about screening and risk reduction should be made on an individual basis.

“For women with dense breasts, discussing options for supplemental screening with their doctor is recommended.”
