China cracks down on calls for accountability over deadly Hong Kong blaze

In response to criticism of the government’s response to Hong Kong’s most stringent fire in a generation, Chinese authorities have taken several activists into custody and issued a stern warning to “anti-China and pro-chaos elements”

In response to the city’s worst fire in nearly eight decades, calls for accountability grew for the national security police of Hong Kong over the weekend, according to state-backed and commercial media reports.

A day after the arrest of a university student on suspicion of sedition, authorities on Sunday detained former district councillor Kenneth Cheung Kam-hung and an unidentified volunteer who managed supplies for survivors. According to The Standard newspaper, Chong was detained on suspicion of “inciting discord.”

According to multiple reports, authorities detained 24-year-old Miles Kwan, a student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, after he launched an online petition for greater accountability and transparency from the government.

The petition made demands that an independent commission of inquiry be established to examine the fire’s circumstances, including whether potential conflicts of interest might have contributed to the disaster.

The petition had more than 10,000 supporters before it was taken down from the internet on Saturday.

Before being removed, activists accused China’s national security office of using “the banner of petitioning the people to incite confrontation and tear society apart” in Hong Kong.

The city’s Office for Safeguarding National Security has also accused individuals with “sinister intentions” of utilizing the fire to bring the city back to the “black-clad violence” that erupted during large-scale antigovernment protests in 2019.

A Wen Wei Po commentary from the Beijing-backed Wen Wei Po newspaper on Monday urged the public to be wary of “anti-government elements” and “malicious intentions.”

They even went so far as to “act as representatives” to form a ‘conventional’ group, submit ‘four demands,’ distribute leaflets, and launch a petition, according to the commentary.

Their actions are completely devoid of humanity and conscience.

‘Outrageous’

Following Beijing’s extensive overhaul of the semi-autonomous territory’s political and legal landscape in response to the 2019 demonstrations, the crackdown is the latest indication of the shrinking space for dissent in Hong Kong.

China has repeatedly refuted claims that Hong Kong’s civil liberties have declined, arguing that residents’ rights and freedoms have been “even better protected” by the passage of two ambitious national security laws.

Beijing has also argued that the law allows for the continuation of Hong Kong’s partial autonomy under the 1997 UK-imposed “One Country, Two Systems” agreement.

The authorities’ actions, according to Nathan Law, an activist and critic of Beijing who served in the legislature of Hong Kong, are “outrageous” and the latest illustration of a “highly authoritarian trend” in the former British colony.

By arresting these individuals, the government hopes to have a chilling effect. Law, who lives in self-exile in the UK and is wanted by Hong Kong authorities on national security charges, told Al Jazeera. “Any civil actions that go against the government’s orders are now prohibited.”

Whether or not it is political, “the government worries about people gathering and starting a collective action.”

Requests for comment were not responded to by the Hong Kong Police Force.

Ronny Tong, a non-official member of Hong Kong’s de facto cabinet, refuted the claim that the authorities were stifling criticism of the government’s handling of the disaster.

By no means is there a general suppression of different opinions or criticisms of the government, Tong told Al Jazeera, “If you look at the major newspapers in Hong Kong, there are very many various suggestions and… criticisms of the handling of the incident in Hong Kong.”

Tong argued that the law allowed for “constructive” criticism of the authorities, even though it would be inappropriate to comment on cases involving people who have not yet gone through the court system.

To arrive at the conclusion that the Hong Kong government are trying to stifle views that they don’t like, he said, one must not simply make the case of a few arrests. The circumstances are still undetermined.

The worst fire in Hong Kong’s northern district of Tai Po since at least 1948 resulted in at least 151 fatalities in the Wednesday fire at a high-rise apartment complex.

Authorities are investigating how the rapid spread of the fire may have been helped by the magnitude of the disaster, with authorities looking into how the use of substandard materials during the block’s renovation projects might have contributed.

The directors of an engineering consulting firm involved in the renovations are among the 13 people who have been detained by Hong Kong authorities as part of their investigation into the fire.

Commission of inquiry

The government has not yet indicated that it will establish an independent commission of inquiry, despite the independent commission against corruption launched by the Hong Kong police and the city’s Independent Commission Against Corruption.

In response to numerous previous tragedies, Hong Kong authorities established commissions of inquiry, a remnant of British rule in the area.

Tragedies were investigated in previous inquiries, which were typically led by judges, such as a 2012 ferry accident that left 39 people dead and a 1996 fire that claimed 41 lives.

Beijing, according to former Hong Kong attorney Kevin Yam, could not tolerate public criticism of the government’s response to the fire because it was worried that “the smallest spark of dissent can turn into something bigger.”

The phrase “They who control the past control the present control the future, and they who control the present control the future” is well known to those who read Orwell. Yam, who is wanted by the Hong Kong authorities for alleged national security offenses, told Al Jazeera that the Communist Party of China has always been very good at that.

They observe that the official record of history is silenced and the criticism is silenced before favorable stories about how things are handled are released into the world.

Since the protests in 2019, Hong Kong has dramatically reduced the space for dissent. It was once known for its noisy media, vibrant civil society, and political diversity.

Authorities have effectively removed opposition parties from the city’s legislature, banned politically sensitive protests, and forced the closure of critical media outlets in accordance with the laws, which have been widely condemned by international governments and rights organizations.

In response to the anti-government demonstrations that started peacefully before morphing into street fights between protesters and police, and other threats to national security facing the territory, the governments of China and Hong Kong have defended the laws as a fair measure.

Spain want to ‘dedicate victory’ to injured Bonmati

Sonia Bermudez, the manager of Spain, claims that her team wants to keep Aitana Bonmati’s injured midfielder’s leg in good condition.

The 27-year-old suffered a minor fall on Sunday during a practice session at the national team’s Madrid training facility.

Spain were getting ready for their Uefa Women’s Nations League match against Germany at the Metropolitano on Tuesday for the second leg.

The first leg of last Friday’s goalless first leg, in Kaiserslautern, was played by Bonmati for 77 minutes.

Bermudez stated, “Aitana wanted to stay for the final and be with us.”

We told her that because we put our players’ health first, she had to go back to Barcelona to begin her recovery.

We want to honor her with a victory for tomorrow.

Irene Paredes, the captain of Spain and one of the team’s players at Barcelona, said: “Nobody likes to see a team-mate hurt or hurt, so absences like Aitana’s can unsettle you.”

Her absence leaves a significant legacy for both Barca and the national team. She informed me about it, but I personally didn’t understand what transpired.

It was obvious that something serious had happened, and you could feel the pain in her eyes. We’ll continue to push each other, and I’m sending her lots of good wishes and encouragement for a full recovery.

According to a statement from the Royal Spanish Football Federation, “Bonmati was” identified with a fracture in her left fibula following tests conducted by the medical services.”

In order to decide whether to proceed with her treatment, Barcelona claimed they were holding off on her return to the club.

What would have otherwise been a stellar year for the midfielder comes to an unhappy conclusion with the injury setback.

Bonmati won the women’s ballon d’or three times, won the domestic triple with Barca, and advanced to the Euro 2025 final with Spain as the first player to do so.

Fubara Counters Criticism, Promises Major Investment In Rivers’ Education Sector

Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, has stated that his administration’s top priority is to improve Rivers State’s underperforming education, announcing that the sector will receive the most funding from the budget for 2026.

Governor Fubara made the announcement Monday that the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers’ 123/124 meeting would be open.

He acknowledged that many state-wide schools are in disrepair, but he also stressed that the state’s schools did not degrade overnight.

He claims that opponents’ main concern was the deterioration, which predated his government, in the 2023 election campaigns.

The governor noted that his approach to planning and reform is guided by his background in public administration, noting that his team is strategically attempting to reverse the decline.

The governor cited the ongoing improvement of zonal hospitals and other welfare-related initiatives as evidence of better service delivery in the sector.

Governor Fubara spoke about employment, stating that while the government is still working to create jobs, there will be a focus on state needs during recruitment, including the anticipated 10,000 openings.

He assured us that there won’t be any political bias in the exercise.

Governor Fubara had a chance to thank traditional rulers for their efforts to break the political impasse that had once threatened stability at the state during his third and fourth combined sessions of the year and the fourth since he assumed office.

He claimed that their intervention had a positive impact on maintaining harmony in their respective domains and that it had contributed to the largely calm environment that exists today.

Governor Fubara’s remarks on the state of education follow a viral video that featured Martin Amaewhule, the governor’s representative from the Rivers State House of Assembly, criticizing the administration’s handling of the sector.

Why Caicedo was sent off but Bentancur escaped

Enzo Maresca, the Chelsea boss, expressed resentment. Not because Moises Caicedo was dismissed against Arsenal on Sunday, but because he thought his team had a lack of consistency.

You can understand why. Rodrigo Bentancur, a Tottenham midfielder, was booked last month for a foul on Reece James, with the video assistant referee (VAR) backing him. However, a red card was used when Caicedo was cautioned for a similar challenge on Mikel Merino.

When we were away at Spurs, Bentancur’s against Reece (James) wasn’t a red card, but why? Maresca inquired.

“So as managers, we find it difficult to comprehend why they judge differently.

Yes, “moises” is a red card. Yes, it’s a red card for Battancur. Why aren’t they red cards for him? Simply put, we find it difficult to comprehend. It’s a red card in actuality. Why, then, do they make a different judgment?

What was the difference then?

Well, consistency is a challenge because outcomes vary a lot depending on who the VAR is.

There are subtle differences between fouls, and no two are ever the same. Caicedo jumped a little, and his contact point was slightly higher, while Battancur was only actually stepping in.

Merino’s ankle had a prominent buckle, which a VAR wants to indicate excessive force, and his boot was placed back on the turf.

The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel unanimously supported no VAR intervention in Bentancur’s case on the grounds that the challenge was “low, just slightly late, and reckless” and supported the yellow card by four votes to one.

Caicedo’s dismissal will be supported by the KMI panel, but it won’t be long before another incident of this nature is dismissed as a yellow card.

Did the VAR instruct the referee to display a yellow card?

Getty Images

At first, the situation appeared a little perplexing. Was Caicedo booked by referee Anthony Taylor so it could be reviewed?

A much simpler explanation is available.

Taylor made an advantage of Arsenal when Eberechi Eze received the loose ball. Caicedo was down injured and in need of treatment when it went out for a throw. Before handing out a card, referees are instructed to wait until an offender is back on their feet.

Caicedo was with the physio, so the delay was not caused by VAR checking the foul.

The VAR will begin checking the tackle, but neither party will communicate with the referee after he issues a card.

In this situation, John Brooks can determine that a red is necessary, but he must wait until Taylor declares his decision (nothing, yellow, or red). Because the check had taken place while Taylor was receiving treatment, the VAR immediately alerted him to the screen.

England rejects a red card evaluation

A referee turned down a red card review at the pitchside monitor for the first time in the Premier League on Sunday, for the first time ever.

Unlike Arsenal, the restart was a free kick to Aston Villa because Darren England had not yet committed a foul on Jhon Arias. The VAR, James Bell, believed Boubacar Kamara’s safety was threatened by Arias’ jumping with both feet.

Arias made contact with Kamara’s boot’s top by taking a risk while Arias was on the floor. Even if it wasn’t a great tackle, it lacks the force necessary for a red card.

Lisandro Martinez, a player for Manchester United, escaped a red card after being challenged on Daichi Kamada for his efforts last season.

Martinez landed in front of Kamada after jumping in with both of his feet in the air after being saved by a little-known rule prohibiting player dismissal.

Should offside have prevented Chelsea from scoring?

Another weekend and more subjective offside decisions are coming up.

Due to Arias’ offside close proximity to goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, Chris Kavanagh again interfered, ejecting a Wolves goal.

Both players ducked under the ball, but Arias was a much clearer offence, which resembled Andrew Robertson’s offside at Liverpool a few weeks ago at Manchester City.

However, it appears as though Chelsea’s goal was offside.

Trevoh Chalobah headed a header past James from the left and into the back of the net.

However, there was a problem. Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera were close by and Enzo Fernandez was standing off-side.

Did Fernandez have an impact on either defender’s decision-making? There would have been a better chance of stopping the header going in if the Chelsea midfielder had not been there.

Fernandez had his arm on Hincapie’s back when he wasn’t trying to play the ball and wasn’t directly in contact with Mosquera.

You can raise the issue of offside very persuasively, which brings us to a second-guessing issue of consistency.

The VAR team examined it, and they concluded that there had been no harm to the defenders.

Should an elbow have turned red for Hincapie?

Moments after the Caicedo red card. The Chelsea defender made contact with Chalobah by the arm on his face after the pair exchanged a ball and jumped for a ball.

Maresca responded, “I asked the referee, he said that it wasn’t an elbow. They responded therefore with this statement. At half-time, he had a black eye and was iced. However, they have different opinions.

Referees should not make decisions regarding potential injuries, despite the fact that it does occasionally happen. It would not make sense for a player to suffer a cut or a bruise from a variety of challenges and collisions.

Referees follow a checklist when weighing a potential elbow, just like they would with serious foul play.

Is this a natural way to put up a high ball challenge? Did the player have an agressive clenched fist? The elbow was either raised or thrown to create force. A yellow card was acceptable because none of them were present.

Sara Cox reveals family member blanks her as ‘little look’ says ‘go away’

Sara Cox, a BBB Radio 2 DJ, has admitted to having a family life and that her son frequently leaves her at the gym because he gives her a “little look to say “go away.”

Sara Cox, a long-time BBC Radio 2 presenter, has come to admit that one of her family members occasionally acts as though he doesn’t recognize her. She recently completed five marathons in five days, making over £11 million for Children in Need.

She acknowledges that she can continue to be a source of shame for her children because Isaac, her son, frequently ignores her at the gym, despite her remarkable accomplishments.

“I’ll give him a lift there and it will be lovely,” she revealed to The Times. “Then in the gym if I walk past him he gives me that little look to say, ‘Go away.’ He knows people there and he doesn’t want me going up to him all sweaty.”

She’s rarely able to attend parents’ evenings at her children’s schools because of her role as host of Radio 2’s Drivetime program between 4 and 7pm.

Ben Cyzer, Sara’s spouse, typically manages that responsibility, and because he’s so involved, educators have labeled him a “tiger dad.” Sara acknowledged that she can’t visit her home as frequently as she would like due to her professional obligations.

She continued, “I frequently tell the kids, I’m sorry I’m not there, I’m sorry I missed that, but they know what I do.” Because their mother is absent, I hope they won’t need therapy in the future.

Isaac, the pair’s son, and Renee, their sister, arrived in 2008 after two years apart in 2010. She and her first husband Jon Carter have a daughter, Lola Anne, who is 21 years old. Sarah stated that taking maternity leave made her feel “unsettling.” You’re wondering what your future career will be like, she said.

She continued, “Thankfully, I had a great support system when I had my two younger children with my husband, Ben.” You always seem to have taken a few steps back, even though I was able to return to work.

Isaac and Renee’s generation holds vastly different values compared to the wild lifestyle she once embraced. Sara, alongside celebrities like Denise van Outen and Zoe Ball, earned the “Ladettes” label during the 1990s – a term she now despises.

Sara, a well-known journalist, claimed that during the late royal’s celebrations for her 100th birthday in 2000, the Queen Mother “smelled of wee.”

This “unfortunate momentary lapse,” which would likely spark outrage in 2025, prompted merely 12 complaints. However, Sara now shows considerably more reverence towards the Royal Family. She reveals: “I get on well with Prince William. He’s really chilled.”

She continued, explaining how her numerous encounters with the Prince of Wales resulted from her involvement with Centrepoint, a charity for young homelessness, as an ambassador.

Sara’s children exhibit far more restraint than she did when they were younger, despite the fact that Sara has mellowed significantly in recent years. She says, “Our teenagers are pretty tamed compared to us.” They exercise, consume protein, and take care of themselves. It’s radically different from our previous “sneering out to clubs and raves” situation.

Following her intense five-day marathon challenge for Children in Need, Sara admitted to having sleep issues. Her monumental trek for the renowned charity ended on Friday, November 14th in Pudsey, West Yorkshire, after Kielder Forest, Northumberland, and Kielder Forest, Northumberland.

Once she crossed the eagerly awaited finish line, she acknowledged it was the “hardest thing” she’d ever accomplished.

Sara is clearly still dealing with the aftermath of the journey as her body recovers from the grueling challenge despite completing the impressive distance. The broadcaster was “shocked by how much it hurt” when he recently became emotionally sensitive while talking about a tragic family loss.

It’s been a really tough challenge since Sara finished the Children in Need challenge. I’m having trouble sleeping. Because my knees and shins took a beating, I’m so stiff and sore, especially my knees and shins.
