Daniel Craig defends ‘over the top’ Knives Out detective and says it’s ‘whole point of movie’

In the hit whodunnit franchise Knives Out, Daniel Craig reprises his role as charismatic if eccentric detective Benoit Blanc in this film.

Bond star Daniel Craig has said his latest film Wake Up Dead Man – the third instalment in the Knives Out films, is sadly very relevant to the ‘scary times’ we live in. “These movies are not whodunnits,” says the 57-year-old actor. “Those are the worst kind of movies.”

Craig’s quirky gentleman-detective Benoit Blanc, complete with his southern drawl, penchant for drama and sharp suits, made his first outing in the smash hit 2019 Netflix film Knives out, which channelled whodunnit queen Agatha Christie’s golden age of crime into a contemporary American setting.

The upcoming film, whose star-studded cast also includes Josh O’Connor, Andrew Scott and Glenn Close, is the follow-up to the second film in the franchise, 2022’s Glass Onions. As Craig admits in an interview with Radio Times, that film – which didn’t receive quite the rapturous reception as its predecessor, saw him criticised for being ‘over the top’.

“But I make an effort to remind people that’s what he was supposed to be,” he continued. Benoit Blanc was trying to disarm these terrible people, which was the whole point of the movie.

Revealing his inspiration for the eccentric Blanc, Craig calls himself ‘a magpie, like every other actor’ and cites various iconic detectives – from Peter Ustinov’s Poirot to Albert Finney in Murder on the Orient Express.

In Wake Up Dead Man, whose dark American Gothic setting was actually recreated in Epping Forest, Essex – the actor heaps praise for the performance of co-lead Josh O’Connor, 35, known to UK audiences for The Durrells and The Crown – as Prince Charles.

O’Connor portrays a young Catholic priest named Father Jud Duplenticy, who, like many of the characters in the movie, conceals dark secrets and worked as a boxer before accidentally killing a man in the ring.

Glen Close, who is open about his own success, compares the actor to Jimmy Stewart, who claims he has a “wonderful quality, a goodness that will be a comfort to people,” while Craig simply declares, “Josh is brilliant – you just want him to shine.”

O’Connor credits Craig for landing his role in Wake Up Dead Man , and says the Bond icon is not only an ‘extraordinary’ actor, but surprisingly, gives a fascinating insight when he says, “He’s incredibly full of self-doubt and self-loathing… and constantly saying to me, ‘What do you think about that?’”

“I think part of it is because he’s so confident with Bond. But that’s not at all him. He resembles a boy. He’s a bit of a sweet, insecure, charming, and draws you in. He is fantastic. I admired his efforts.

Wake Up Dead Man sees Blanc take on possibly his trickiest case to date, as he is tasked with solving the seemingly impossible murder of the charismatic yet intimidating Monsignor (Josh Brolin) at a small Catholic Parish in upstate New York.

Jeremy Clarkson makes Diddly Squat Farm decision after ‘sad’ moment

After the former Top Gear star made environmental changes like wider hedgerows and new ponds, Jeremy Clarkson has transformed Diddly Squat Farm into a haven for birds, with 45 species now recorded compared to the average farm’s 27.

Jeremy Clarkson has shared a poignant moment from his time on Diddly Squat Farm that left him feeling “sad”. The former Top Gear host, who purchased a thousand acres of land including Curdle Hill Farm in 2008, was disheartened by the lack of birds at his Chipping Norton site.

A tenant had previously taken over the farm, but Jeremy took over as owner when they left in 2019. Clarkson’s Farm, a well-known Amazon Prime Video series, chronicles his foray into farming.

Since starting to farm six years ago, Jeremy has expressed his regret over the alarming decline in bird numbers. He stated in a column for the Sunday Times magazine that “the sad state of things was obvious when I first purchased Diddly Squat because their numbers have fallen by more than 60% since 1970.” The skies were completely empty when I went for a walk.

The TV personality, who had a desire to change things, decided to start farming seven years ago. He continued, “It made me sad, so when I started farming the land seven years ago, I made the decision to take action.” I widened the margins around the fields’ edges and stopped trimming the hedges away from the roads.

According to Jeremy, farmers are required to leave between four and six metres around the edges of fields. However, he chose to leave 10 in some areas to foster a healthier environment for the birds, even though it meant producing less food, reports Gloucestershire Live.

Along with that, Jeremy also constructs ponds across Diddly Squat. He humorously admits that because he “loves using diggers,” but also believes that it will provide a source of water that could aid in the return of farmland birds.

Later, Jeremy reached out to bird expert Hannah Bourne-Taylor for advice and planted “wildflower strips” around the farm to encourage insects as “tasty snacks.”

Hannah, who once caused controversy by expanding a trip to Ghana by 84 days because a bird nested in her hair, encouraged him to make more changes at Diddly Squat, including planting “all kinds of things with Latin names.”

However, the dry weather prevented the flowers from actually growing. She also advised me to rent a digger and build more ponds because birds don’t enjoy traveling, according to Jeremy.

For instance, “a corn bunting rarely straddles more than a mile or so from the hedge where it was born.”

The former Grand Tour winner claims that Hannah eventually discovered 45 different bird species at Diddly Squat, compared to the typical farm’s 27, he claims.

Whitethroats, goldfinches, buntings, and skylarks were just a few of the species that Jeremy’s farm found. He claims that he was pleased to see his efforts paid off despite the fact that the majority of the birds were “small and boring.”

Floods in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand leave close to 1,000 dead

At least 954 people have died in recent days as a result of tropical storms, including floods and landslides, in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Malaysia. Thousands have been rescued from the extreme weather.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stated on Monday that the government’s top priority was “how to immediately send the necessary aid.”

According to Prabowo, “God willing, we can reach a number of remote villages,” adding that the government was using helicopters and aircraft to aid the relief effort.

In response to flooding and landslides that have claimed at least 442 lives and left hundreds more missing, Prabowo is increasingly being pressured to declare a national emergency.

Prabowo has so far refrained from making public appeals for international assistance in contrast to Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s counterpart in Sri Lanka.

The government of Indonesia has sent aid to some of the hardest-hit areas, where many roads remain blocked, by two hospital ships and three warships.

Floodwaters mostly receded in Sungai Nyalo village, which is located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Padang, West Sumatra’s capital, leaving mud-drenched homes, vehicles, and crops.

Idris, 55, who goes by one name, told the AFP news agency, “Most villagers chose to stay because they didn’t want to leave their homes behind.”

On November 29, 2025, a villager in Bireuen, Aceh province, Indonesia, is being evacuated by rescuers who pass through debris.

Sri Lanka seeks assistance

Meanwhile, the government of Sri Lanka has requested international assistance and is using military helicopters to reach stranded residents of the country due to flooding and landslides caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

Sri Lanka’s disaster agency reported on Sunday that at least 334 people had died, many of whom are still missing.

A helicopter pilot was making an emergency landing north of Colombo while helping “flu-affected communities in Lunuwila,” the Sri Lankan Air Force reported in a Facebook post on Monday. “Traumically lost his life.”

Relief workers cleared roads slowed by fallen trees and mudslides, according to officials, who said the extent of the damage was only just beginning to become apparent.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the president’s declaration of an state of emergency to deal with the disaster, pledged to rebuild.

In a speech to the nation, Dissanayake said, “We are facing the largest and most challenging natural disaster in our history.”

“We will undoubtedly create a better world than what was before.”

In southern Thailand, the death toll rises.

At least 176 people have died as a result of ongoing flooding in Thailand’s south, according to Thai authorities on Monday.

Two local officials have been suspended over their alleged failures, according to AFP, and the government has begun relief measures, but the flood response has received growing public criticism.

Two people were killed in Perlis state across the border of Malaysia, where extensive landslides also flooded large tracts of land.

Year of deadly floods in Asia

The most recent extreme weather events to devastate Southeast Asian nations in recent weeks include two typhoons that struck the Philippines just one week apart last month, killing at least 242 people.

A rare tropical storm that brought heavy rain to Sumatra Island specifically exacerbated the flooding that hit Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia.

‘Arsenal deserve to be clear – but who’s best placed to challenge?’

For Chelsea, their lack of discipline is something that needs to change if they are to challenge for the title. All the teams that are chasing Arsenal have things they need to work on.

A Chelsea player has been sent off four times in the last thirteen Premier League games due to Moises Caicedo’s dismissal in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against the Gunners.

Malo Gusto received one of those red cards against Forest, but it came so late that the outcome was irrelevant. They have been a man down for a significant portion of the game against Manchester United, Brighton, and now Arsenal.

Caicedo was sent off for this challenge on Arsenal's Mikel Merino in the 38th minute

Chelsea will be happy with a point in the endgame when they defeat Arsenal thanks to their reaction when they face off against 10 men and the goal. The Gunners were unable to open them up, so they made it difficult for them even when they did concede.

However, I still believe Blues manager Enzo Maresca will view it as a missed opportunity to close the gap between the leaders because of the way his team played with ten men.

In three of their first eight matches last year, Arsenal dropped points in three of those three occasions after receiving a man sent off, which was costly red cards in the title race.

However, they have much better disciplinary practices this year. In a feisty London derby on Sunday, they did indeed receive six yellow cards, but they kept 11 players on the field.

Chelsea also lacks consistency.

Before the season began, I didn’t have Chelsea down as title contenders because I already had them in the top four, but I later discovered they surprised me there when they won the Club World Cup.

Even though Sunday’s game was first versus second heading into the weekend, it probably suits them that no one really has them down as title contenders right now.

Do I believe they will win the Premier League from here despite their draw, which they are still in? No, I don’t.

Do they have a chance? Of course, they would need to improve more than just their criminal history, of course.

Man City are concocting an excessive number of chances.

Out of the rivals in the chasing pack, Aston Villa are arguably in the best form. Recently, Unai Emery’s side have been fantastic and are currently in excellent form.

Only the Gunners among the top five last year have found consistency; all other four teams have been inconsistent, including Chelsea and Liverpool and Newcastle.

I still don’t see Liverpool returning to the title race until after they won an important victory on Sunday, though.

Instead, they should have enough talent in their squad to reach the Champions League, which is what they should aim for.

I also watched their match against West Ham as part of Match of the Day. After a run of form, the Reds were at the point where a strong performance was all that was required.

They ended up having both. Because Arne Slot was under pressure and made a significant decision to leave Mohamed Salah out, it turned out to be a crucial three points.

Alexander Isak scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool as well, which was fantastic. Both he and Liverpool fans had to wait longer than they would have liked for it.

His brilliant half-volley goal against West Ham, which was also crucial, changed the game, and it was also a crucial one.

Without a doubt, Isak’s quality is there, so it was surprising to see him discard such a clever strike.

Arsenal should be five points clear of them.

Arsenal’s status as the rivalry continues this weekend, but that hasn’t changed.

You could argue that Chelsea’s 10 men could have done more, and they might be disappointed that they didn’t have more chances to create chances after receiving a red card and only got a draw.

However, looking at the bigger picture, they have overcome a difficult week in the Champions League and Premier League with convincing victories over Bayern Munich and Tottenham, and they have now drawn one point clear of the table’s leaders.

Without them, they conceded from a Chelsea set-piece and didn’t appear to be their usual threat from their own, which is a coincidence given that they were missing both of their first-choice center-halves, Gabriel and William Saliba, in the match against Chelsea.

Another reason why Arteta won’t consider the outcome as two points dropped by upholding this point will be seen as positive.

Arsenal are currently five points clear of the Premier League’s top scorers after their previous two away draws. Despite this, they are still the most consistent team in the division.

The current league table does not and never does. They are going to take some catching because they have been the standout side so far, and they deserve to be where they are.

Four Dead, 10 Injured In Katsina Road Crash

In Katsina State’s Matazu and Charanchi local government areas, two separate accidents have claimed the lives of four people.

Ten others were hurt in addition to the incidents that took place on Sunday.

Governor Dikko Radda was driving along the Daura-Katsina Road in violation of his official duties just four months prior.

The governor, who was returning from his statewide tour in the Funtua zone, witnessed the four women who were also deceased in the Matazu accident.

A commercial golf vehicle with the registration number (DDM 339 XA) involved in a fatal accident was discovered by Radda’s convoy.

On its way from Jibia to Dandume, the car, which had several passengers inside, suffered severe damage.

The governor immediately notified the governor’s convoy that it was going to stop, and he personally oversaw the victims’ evacuation.

While the convoy was in need of additional responders, medical teams attached to it offered emergency assistance.

Gov. mourns

No leader should have to drive past such a tragedy, Radda said while speaking at the scene.

Because these victims are our brothers and sisters, we stopped. Their lives matter, he continued, and it is our duty to act with urgency and compassion.

This agonizing loss serves as a reminder of how fragile life really is. We will continue to help those who have lost their lives, he added, and my heart is with the families of the deceased.

The governor noted that his entourage encountered another accident along the Kafinsoli–Koda Road as he continued his journey back to Katsina in a statement from his chief press secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed.

He continued, adding that he once more gave the order to stop the convoy without hesitating.

Two vehicles from the governor’s motorcade were dispatched to a hospital in Charanchi for urgent treatment, and rescue efforts were immediately coordinated.

In a related development, the governor spoke with the deputy governor’s convoy, which was involved in a collision along the Kaduna–Zaria Road that left six people injured.

He prayed for their quick and complete recovery.

May Jannatul Firdausi be granted and the departed be forgiven by Allah. He prayed that He could also heal the injured and bring them home in peace.
