Bangladesh sentences British MP, Sheikh Hasina’s niece, to prison

Former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her niece, British MP Tulip Siddiq, were both given five years in absentia by a court in Dhaka for corruption in a case involving the acquisition of plots of land.

Hasina, who has been living in exile in India since being toppled in an uprising last year, allegedly misused her position as premier in the transaction, according to Rabiul Alam, the judge of Dhaka’s Special Judge’s Court.

Sheikh Rehana, Hasina’s sister, and two other siblings helped her mother, Sheikh Rehana, her mother, and two other siblings obtain the plot for a government project in Dhaka, after Siddiq, an MP for the country’s ruling Labour party, was found guilty of corruptly influencing Hasina.

Rehana, who is reportedly no longer based in Bangladesh, was given a seven-year absentee prison sentence, and the trio were also fined 100, 000 taka ($820), which would add up to six more months in jail, according to the court.

Fourteen of the people indicted in the case received five-year sentences.

According to the AFP news agency, Khan Mainul Hasan, the Anti-Corruption Commission prosecutor, said his team had information about Siddiq’s correspondence with Hasina’s principal secretary Salahuddin Ahmed, who had allegedly been a part of the case.

Sheikh Hasina, who also took three plots for herself and her children, was asked by Lotus to give them plots, Hasan said. She called [Ahmed] over encrypted apps, and they even met him in Dhaka.

charges of “political motivation.”

They have dismissed them as politically motivated, according to Hasina and Siddiq, who did not nominate attorneys to defend the accusations.

Hasina, who was given a death sentence in absentia last month for crimes against humanity related to the protesters’ 2012 crackdown, refuted the ruling in a statement sent to AFP.

No nation is free of corruption, according to the statement. However, it is necessary to look into corruption in a manner that is not necessarily corrupt. She claimed that the ACC has today failed that test.

The verdict was “entirely predictable,” according to her Awami League party, and the anticorruption watchdog in Bangladesh was “a political mechanism used for political purposes,” according to a statement released by her Awami League party to The Associated Press news agency.

Siddiq, the MP for the London district of Hampstead and Highgate, has not yet made a public comment, but he has previously called the allegations “politically motivated smear.”

As the UK’s minister in charge of financial services and anticorruption efforts in January, she resigned because her relationships with her aunt were “distracting the work of the government.”

Her resignation was prompted by a probe into Siddiq’s connections to her aunt’s regime led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s ethics adviser, which concluded that Starmer had not violated the ministerial code but had suggested that she should reconsider her responsibilities, according to the PA Media news agency.

There is no extradition agreement between the UK and Bangladesh.

Officials will get in touch with the UK government regarding Siddiq’s verdict, according to Hasan, the prosecutor.

Authorities claimed they had obtained the British MP’s passport, national identity card, and tax number after the prosecution claimed Siddiq was tried as a Bangladeshi citizen, according to AP reports.

Siddiq, however, has refuted the assertion, claiming that she is a British citizen and does not hold Bangladeshi citizenship.

In addition to her ineligibility, another court on Thursday handed Hasina a 21-year sentence in absentia for two separate cases involving the same township project, finding her guilty of illegally securing plots of land for herself and her family in the Dhaka development.

Ed Sheeran addresses Taylor Swift ‘fallout’ after not hearing about wedding

Before her lavish wedding to Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, Ed Sheeran, the Shivers star has revealed his friendship with Taylor Swift.

Ed Sheeran has set the record straight on his friendship with Taylor Swift after reports of a fallout between the pair. The Shivers star, 34, has been pals with the Bad Blood billionaire, 35, for years, with Taylor even calling Ed her ‘second brother’.

However, rumours started to swirl when Ed, who doesn’t have a mobile phone, admitted he only found out about Taylor’s star-studded wedding to Travis Kelce when she posted the news on Instagram. There were also concerns that the Americana star had dropped her album, The Life Of A Showgirl, so close to Ed’s own offering, Play.

According to a source in the music business, Ed “takes these things seriously and carefully plans his album releases.” He gave four months’ notice for his album, but Taylor gave only two weeks’ notice for hers.

They continued: “It left his team scrabbling to get as much attention before hers dropped. He was very much put out and understandably peeved,” reports the Mail.

The Shape of You star has now confirmed that he spoke to Taylor a week after she got engaged and that the pair are still as friendly as ever.

The Castle On A Hill hitmaker told Access Hollywood, “I’m not self-conscious about my relationship with her.” He continued, “We’ve known each other for a very, very long time.

We are very close, and we can only see one another when we can see one another, and when we can, we can pick up where we left off.

He continued, “My way of seeing it is like, I and Taylor are mates and I will see her,” referring to him declaring that he hadn’t discovered he hadn’t discovered Taylor’s wedding until everyone else.

I went to see her a week after that happened, so I did the interview, and I met her and we spoke in person.

Meanwhile, musing on not having a mobile phone and the ‘all-consuming’ world of social media, he concluded: “I kind of feel like being in touch with everyone, you sort of lose actual human connection.”

In a statement from Ed to Zane Lowe for Apple Music in 2023, Taylor claimed that she was one of the few people who truly understood him and that Taylor was one of the few people who did so.

Stranger Things notice small Easter egg that has them on the edge of their seats

Fans of Stranger Things just discovered a special Easter egg in the show’s teaser, which surprised them as the first episodes of the fifth and final season of Netflix were just released.

Fans of Stranger Things are perplexed after finding a small Easter egg that has them clamoring to binge-watch the fifth season of the Netflix series.

Netflix released a missing person poster with Eleven, who was named Jane Hopper, as well as a phone number that urged people to call the fictional Hawkins Police Department if they knew anything about her disappearance that occurred at the end of season four in order to gain some attention for the upcoming fifth season.

A large image of Eleven, named Jane Hopper, was prominent on the poster, which further stated that a reward of $3000 (£2, 267) will be given to all leads that lead to “Janes Hopper or her body,” who was last seen on the pavement near Hawkins High School. The page’s bottom also had a phone number for users to call.

Fans have only recently rediscovered this Easter egg as the first episodes of the Netflix series have been released, as many were curious what would happen to Eleven.

One man named Albert took to Twitter to ask the user for help calling the number on the poster because he’d heard from other fans that a special surprise would be coming up next to the line.

“Netflix just dropped a missing poster for Eleven, or Jane Hopper, as we know her.” And they included a phone number, which I’ve heard they do, which is what he said at the beginning of the video, “I’ve heard that if you call the phone number, you get a special voice message,” he said.

Without prior authorization, content cannot be displayed.

He continued to show his phone’s screen, where he had already entered the phone number from the advertisement he was about to call.

A terrifying in-world voicemail message from the fictional Hawkins Police Department appears after you press the call button. “Thank you for reaching the Hawkins Police Department,” it was reverberated. Hawkins is currently locked down to protect our residents as a result of the recent 7.4 magnitude earthquake.

“Jane Hopper is a priority for the Hawkins emergency task force, which is working closely with the Hawkins police department to find missing persons.” We ask that you assist us in finding her as a responsible Hawkins.

The shaky ’80s line then abruptly disappears, causing a sense of urgency. The moment is related to Season 4, which ended disastrously for Hawkins and Eleven.

As he was curious what his viewers thought of the interactive detail, Albert said, “Yo, that was cool.”
