Strictly fix row as TV special star was ‘trained by judge Anton Du Beke’ as a child

Strictly Come Dancing faces a fresh row after a star of the Christmas special of the series wasrevealed to have undergone professional dance training as a child

A Strictly fix row has emerged over ignited after it was revealed that Scarlett Moffat, who is set to star in the Christmas special, was trained by one of the judges in the past. Scarlett, 35, was the first celebrity to be announced for the festive special after years of being linked to the show.

The popular TV personality is a major signing – but show insiders are reportedly angry that she is on the line-up because she was trained by Anton Du Beke as a child. She has already emerged as the favourite to win the Christmas glitterball due to her strong dancing experience.

A Strictly insider said: “Scarlett is a trained dancer, she is so good at it and spent much of her childhood doing ballroom and Latin dancing. Anton even helped her and now he will be judging her against others. It all feels very unfair.”

They continued to the Mail: “She will surely be the runaway winner and then the BBC will be desperate to sign her for the 2026 series. How would you feel if you were one of the others?”

Scarlett took part in national dance competitions as a child but stopped competing after going to university in York, where she replaced ballroom with drunken nights out. While she is already a favourite to win, Scarlett has insisted that she hasn’t picked up where she left off.

Speaking to The Sun this week, she explained: “It’s funny because I think in my brain, ‘oh yeah, that’s what I’m doing’. But then I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and I’m like, ‘oh, something’s not connected’.

“Because in my head I’m doing the moves that he’s saying. But then I look in the mirror and I’m like, ‘oh, that isn’t what I thought I would look like doing that’. I’m just having fun, and I think that’s the main thing, especially for the Strictly Christmas special. It’s the sheer joy of it.”

Scarlett returned to a competitive ballroom for the first time in 15 years at Blackpool‘s Winter Gardens in October 2024, achieving two 2nd places and two 3rd places with her dance partner Craig Andrew.

Scarlett – who gave birth to her son Jude by C-section in 2023 – told fans she’d “never been so nervous but so proud of myself” after returning to her childhood hobby.

She will now continue her dance journey while coupled with Italian Strictly professional dancer Vito Coppola. Vito, 33, previously won the Glitterball alongside Ellie Leach, and made it to the Strictly final on two other occasions.

Vito also won the Italian version of the show in the sole season he took part in. Scarlett revealed that she was desperately hoping to be paired with him, and was delighted when she got her wish, admitting, “there’s something about the way that he dances and his energy“.

Scarlett is currently preparing for her Strictly stint while rehearsing for panto in Northwich as the Spirit of the Ring in Aladdin.

European Challenge Cup

Exeter Chiefs (35) 42

Tries: Ikitau, Fisilau, Skinner, Sio, Slade, Feyi-Waboso Cons: Slade 6

Cheetahs (7) 12

Exeter Chiefs got their European Challenge Cup campaign off to the perfect start with a dominant display against the Cheetahs at Sandy Park.

The hosts went second in Pool 3 level on points with Ulster and Stade Francais after an opening fixture featuring six-tries against the South Africans who were blown away in the first half.

Coach Rob Baxter takes his side to Racing 92 next Sunday for a second outing in Europe’s second tier competition with wind in their sails not only from their strong Prem start but a ruthless display here.

Tries from Len Ikitau, Greg Fisilau, Harvey Skinner, Scott Sio and Henry Slade gave Chiefs a 35-7 half time lead and while the second half saw them add just one more through Manny Feyi-Waboso, they showcased some outstanding defensive sets to put the contest to bed.

All aspects of Exeter’s play started on point with a line-out steal backed up with some bruising phases in the middle then Skinner breaking through the Cheetahs’ defensive line.

His assist to Ikitau got the ball rolling and with Exeter dominant at the breakdown and assured at the line-out they were soon two tries to the good with Fisilau touching down on 20 minutes.

Cheetahs responded to halve the deficit to 14-7 after a fine off-load from Prince Nkabinde seeing Annies go over.

But a close-range effort from Skinner, a pick and go from a line-out from Sio and a cross-field kick from Skinner to Slade, who touched down in the corner, saw them go in 35-7 up.

Slade deserves special mention for the unerring accuracy of his boot from some demanding angles. All six of his conversion attempts went over for extras. But a towering display in defence from Tom Hooper also needs noting.

After Feyi-Waboso cancelled out Hartzenberg’s second-half effort Exeter allowed some sloppy play to creep into their performance but they were back on song towards the end.

First-half display delights Walder – reaction

Exeter Chiefs assistant coach Dave Walder speaking to BBC Radio Devon:

“We are delighted with the start we have made today to the tournament and while there is lots to work on we are sitting in the changing room very happy.

“We put the game to bed in the first half hour. The try before half-time was really crucial and some of our tries in the first half were outstanding. It was a shame we didn’t kick on in the second half but I think mentally after half an hour we were in a good place.

“Sometimes you can be a little bit fearful [against teams] or get a little bit complacent and I thought we judged it well. If you had said at the start of the day you would win 42-12 and be in the situation we are in you would have taken that.

Exeter: Hammersley; Woodburn, Slade, Ikitau, Feyi-Waboso; Skinner, Chapman; Sio, Yeandle, Tchumbadze, Jenkins, Zambonin, Hooper, Roots, Fisilau

Replacements: Dweba, Goodrick-Clarke, Roots, Pearson, James, Cairns, Haydon-Wood, John

Cheetahs: Annies; Hartzenberg, Ackermann, du Plessis, Nkabinde; van der Walt, Jansen van Vuren; Dawson, van der Westhuizen, Coetzee, Wegner, Sekekete, Uys, Venter, van der Merwe

Replacements: Paulo, Nieuwoudt, dos Reis, Vumazonke, Volschenk, Maartens, Nel, Jasper

Furious Strictly Come Dancing fans threaten to ‘switch off’ in outrage over latest exit

It was always going to be a tough night for fans of the BBC1 show but the celebrity voted out of the quarter finals proved hugely controversial

Furious fans threatened to boycott Strictly Come Dancing tonight as one of the favourites to lift the glitterball trophy unexpectedly got their marching orders from the show.

Former Emmerdale star Lewis Cope became the latest star to be voted off, following a dance-off with Amber Davies and Nikita Kuzmin in which the judges unanimously chose to save Amber. Some viewers were left so enraged by his departure ahead of next week’s semi-final, after the judges ruled his salsa was “not his best” effort, that they vowed to stop watching. Lewis’s devastated pro partner Katya Jones clearly agreed that his exit was too early as she branded him “the best male celebrity we’ve ever had on the show”.

Viewer Alan Price said he was devastated to see Lewis, 30, leave the competition – and would no longer be watching as a result. “Lewis has been exceptional all the way through. I’v enjoyed watching him perform but will switch off from the show now.”

Lynne Dudfield agreed: “Totally fixed. Will not be watching any more.” Elaine Smith believes that being too good from the start had worked against him, sighing: “He was never going to be allowed to win but he is my winner anyway.” And Vivienne Hinds agreed: “The audience would pay to go and see any show he is in – would not go and see the rest. He has made this series, totally.”

But other audience members said it was the right decision because he “wasn’t on top form” and also had an “awful song”. Lewis and Katya’s exit came after they scored the first full marks of the series with their Couple’s Choice routine to Radiohead’s Creep during the Halloween special, which got four 10s from the judges.

In tonight’s results programme Katya told him: “I think you have created so many moments for Strictly Come Dancing that will be in the history books and you will be remembered as one of, if not, the best male celebrity we’ve ever had on the show, but also you will be remembered for being an incredible person you are. Kind and genuine people still exist – what a gentleman you are, so humble. I’m so glad that we had a chance to showcase your talent and what a beautiful person you are to the world.”

The result, in Musicals Week, was a foregone conclusion because Amber and Nikita had already scored a perfect 40 on Saturday for their Charleston to a song from Guys and Dolls, while Lewis’s salsa to Dance at the Gym from West Side Story was criticised for having several flaws, particularly by Craig Revel Horwood and head judge Shirley Ballas.

Amber, 29, now waltzes into next week’s semi-final alongside George Clarke, 26, who is the last male celebrity left standing, plus Balvinder Sopal, 47, and Karen Carney, 38. When asked by host Tess Daly about his time on the show, Lewis said: “It’s been more than I could have ever wished for. If someone would have said that I’d have done 11 weeks at the beginning, I’d have been over the moon and snapped their hand off.”

Speaking to Katya he added: “It’s been incredible and a memory that I’ll have for the rest of my life, and I think it’s all down to you. You’ve literally given me absolutely everything I could wish for as a friend, as a teacher. I couldn’t imagine it with anybody else so thank you very much.”

Quizzed on the support he’s received and the impact he’s hoping for, Lewis said: “It’s everything, isn’t it? I mean, what is life without people? And this show, I’ve seen how it’s brought people together, not just in my family, but it seems to lift people up. And it’s definitely brought my family, four generations, together every Saturday night – my Nana Dot sitting there smiling all the time.

“You know, young boys who thought that dancing wasn’t accessible for them or whatever. They’ve started dancing now and have sent us videos. You know, if you can change one person’s life like that, then that’s enough.”

Kylie Minogue and Five will perform during next week’s semi final on Saturday, which kicks off on BBC1 at 6.35pm.

Is there any way back for Salah and Liverpool?

It will go down as one of the most explosive interviews in the Premier League era.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah stunned most people on Saturday evening when he claimed his relationship with manager Arne Slot had “broken down”.

The Egyptian, arguably one of the Premier League’s greatest players, cranked up the pressure on Slot after spending the third game in a row on the substitutes bench, as Liverpool let a lead slip twice in a 3-3 draw with Leeds.

Claims such as he had been ‘thrown under the bus’ and that ‘someone didn’t want him at the club’ were probably the last thing Slot wanted to hear put into the public, especially after a forgettable run of form that leaves the champions ninth in the Premier League.

But what now for Salah at Liverpool? The 33-year-old only signed a new two-year deal in April but admitted on Saturday he was unsure whether he had played his last game for the club.

‘Salah’s relationship with Slot is genuinely broken’

Salah rarely speaks to the media but when he does it is typically because he has something important to say.

That approach was taken to a new level with Saturday’s explosive comments.

When he was approached in the mixed zone at Elland Road, he was clear with reporters that he wanted to speak to them.

It’s unclear whether this was on the spur of the moment out of frustration or something more calculated.

His comments quickly went around the world and put Liverpool head coach Slot under increased pressure and scrutiny.

On Sunday, in the aftermath, there was little sign that there was any regret or walking back from what Salah said.

Sources with knowledge of the situation told BBC Sport that Salah’s relationship with Slot is genuinely broken at present.

They said he simply doesn’t see a future at Liverpool with Slot as his manager. That is quite the turnaround from a Premier League title won just eight months ago shortly after a lucrative new contract was announced.

Sources say that Salah has also been irritated by a feeling that pundits and former players are putting forward a narrative that he is one of the main reasons Liverpool have struggled this season.

Salah is said to feel that Slot has been influenced by that media commentary – yet when he has not played the Reds arguably haven’t played any better.

We were told that Salah feels a different tactical approach this season driven by the club’s transfer dealings isn’t suiting him.

Those sources were at pains to say how much Salah loves Liverpool and also how frustrated he has become at their struggles.

BBC Sport was told on Saturday that Liverpool are open-minded about Salah’s future amid Saudi interest. Al-Hilal, managed by Simone Inzaghi, are understood to be among the teams interested.

What happens next?

Liverpool fans – and the world of football in general – will be waiting to find out the next installment with bated breath.

And they aren’t going to have very long to wait with Monday likely to be a key day.

The Reds are due to have an open training session on Monday morning, ahead of Tuesday’s important Champions League match at Inter Milan, so all eyes will be on whether Salah is in attendance.

We are yet to hear from Liverpool since, but the big question will be will Salah be travelling with the squad to Milan after open training?

Slot is then expected to talk to the media for the first time since Salah’s interview broke on Monday night, with all focus certain to be on their relationship.

Was he surprised by the interview? Is there a way back for Salah? Is he still in his plans for Tuesday night? All questions Slot will have to field in Milan.

A day later, Liverpool will be facing Inter Milan looking for a win to move them back into the top eight of the Champions League – but will Salah be involved?

The Reds then face Brighton at Anfield on Saturday, Salah’s last match before he was due to meet up with the Egypt on Monday for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Whether Salah will even be at Anfield is currently uncertain and, if he is, the reaction of the supporters towards his outburst would be very interesting.

What information do we collect from this quiz?

‘It’s an error from Salah’ – reaction

Former England goalkeeper Rob Green, told BBC Radio 5 Live:

He only ever speaks when it’s going wrong for him or it’s not going swimmingly. He’s done it a few times after games and you just think maybe someone have a word in your ear.

But what this does do is give Arne Slot an open goal now with whatever he wants to do. Now, with the Afcon coming up and with this outburst it’s kind of a gift for Slot to say no one is bigger than the club, out you go.

Or he can bring him back into the squad, nurse him back into the team but do it under his say so.

The pressure is completely off Arne Slot now, really it’s an error from Mo Salah because realistically with that draw (at Leeds) and the difficulty they are having this season, just stay quiet because the pressure grows, game by game that you don’t play.

This is Slot’s to decide now. For me, Salah is an all-time great for Liverpool, for everything he’s done. You’re now saying you’re going to leave at some point. It might be now, January might come around and they say it’s best for all parties if you go now – it wouldn’t surprise me if that happened.

BBC Radio 5 Live commentator Conor McNamara: At Elland Road it’s very close. The press conference room is right near the player tunnel and players are always going out to the team buses, it’s old school in that way.

In the mixed zone where players walk through and normally they pretend to be on their phone to avoid speaking to the media, that’s what usually happens.

Mo Salah came out and had things to get off his chest. It ended up being there were more journalists out there than there were in the press conference where Arne Slot was speaking at the same time. This was all happening simultaneously but that immediately became the story that everyone was talking about last night.

Gritty Palestine enter Arab Cup quarters as favourites Qatar crash out

Asian champions Qatar have been knocked out of the FIFA Arab Cup 2025 after a shocking 3-0 loss to Tunisia, with Palestine advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time with a 0-0 draw against Syria.

Home favourites Qatar needed a big win over Tunisia to have any chances of progressing from Group A, where Palestine and Syria were in the lead as the last round of the group fixtures was played on Sunday.

A poor defensive display from the Asian Cup winners saw them concede the lead in the 16th minute on Sunday, when Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane pounced on a goalkeeping error by Meshaal Barsham, allowing the Tunisian midfielder to poke the ball into the net from close range at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.

While the Annabi (the Maroons) were able to hold off further Tunisian goals in the first half, the home crowd was left frustrated by Qatar’s attack.

Led by star striker Akram Afif, the forwards looked jaded as they failed to produce goal-scoring opportunities despite holding 60 percent of the possession.

They were made to pay for not converting their shots into goals when Tunisia doubled their lead in the 62nd minute through a low and close-range header by Yassine Meriah following a corner.

A few minutes later, Tunisia were reduced to 10 men when Seifeddine Jaziri was sent off for a foul with 25 minutes left until full time, but Qatar failed to capitalise on the advantage.

Tunisia’s win was sealed in the closing minutes of the game when an unmarked Mohamed Benali received the ball in the Qatari half and slotted in a powerful strike.

He went on to celebrate the goal and the win, but Tunisia’s joy was short-lived as the result from the other group game confirmed that both teams were knocked out.

Widely contrasting scenes unfolded 48 kilometres (30 miles) away at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan, where Palestine and Syria played out a goalless draw to secure their respective qualification for the last-eight stage.

Palestine beat Qatar dramatically in the opening game of the tournament when an own goal gave the war-torn nation a shock win over the favourites.

The Fidai – as the Palestinian team is known – then put on a dogged display against Tunisia as they came back from 2-0 down to draw their second match.

Syria, too, won their first match when they beat Tunisia 1-0 and were level on points and goal difference with their fellow Levantine nation.

This left both table-topping teams needing a point from the final Group A match to secure their progress, and when the full-time whistle was blown by the referee signalling a goalless draw, both sets of players fell to the ground in an outpouring of the emotions they had held back for 90 minutes.

The Palestinian team brought out their flags, keffiyehs and loudest roars as they celebrated in tandem with their vociferous supporters.

Syria’s players were equally emotional as they jumped around in joy and disbelief.

Several Palestinian players, including Gaza-born defender Mohammed Saleh, waved both Palestinian and Syrian flags as the celebrations carried on well past full time.

The results and their impact on the tournament’s next round are shocking, not only because both Palestine and Syria are reeling from the effects of war, but also due to the gulf in the teams’ standings in world football.

Palestine are 96th in FIFA’s team rankings, 45 places behind Qatar, while Syria are placed at 87. Tunisia, the sixth-best team in Africa, are ranked 40th in the world.

Qatar are among the six Arab teams to have qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026, and Tunisia are among the nine African nations in the finals.

Neither Palestine nor Syria have ever qualified for football’s showpiece event, but for now, their fans will not care as their teams march on in the Arab Cup.

Amber Davies issues desperate plea to Strictly fans ‘I wasn’t even supposed to be on the show’

Amber Davies has hit back at critics after received four 10s on Strictly Come Dancing last night, pleading with viewers to “be kind” following criticism of her dance experience

Strictly Come Dancing star Amber Davies has pleaded with fans to “be kind” after receiving criticism over her dance experience, saying: “I wasn’t even supposed to be in the competition.” The West End star received four 10s from the judges after her Charleston to Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat from Guys and Dolls.

She topped the leaderboard alongside her professional dance partner Nikita Kuzmin and received glowing comments from the judges. However, after receiving criticism from trolls following her performance, the star took to Instagram with a request to her fans.

“Guys, please…it’s really is just a television show,” she wrote on her Instagram story. “I wasn’t even supposed to be in the comp.

“You have no idea what we put our mind and body through for this experience.. I’m really just trying my best with the opportunity that came to me. To anyone who has left a NICE comment thank you. Xx.”

Alongside the text, she also wrote: “The meanies are out to play. Please be kind.”

The 29-year-old filled in for Love Island’s Dani Dyer after she was forced to pull out of the competition. The reality star injured herself shortly after the launch show, but was quickly replaced by Amber ahead of the first week.

Since joining the show, some viewers have criticised Amber being on the line-up due to her performance background – having starred in West End shows of 9 to 5: The Musical, Back to the Future: The Musical and The Great Gatsby.

Commenting on a clip of last night’s performance with Nikita, some viewers accused her of having an advantage in the competition. “An amazing dance but she’s had an advantage as already performed in a few musicals. Strictly to me is about taking a complete novice like George & Karen and turning them into dancers. George & Karen pulled it out the bag tonight,” one person wrote.

Another commented: “Well she waa jn the Great Gatsby this year..of course she can dance,” alongside eye roll emoji.

Other fans have rallied around the star, writing: “Amber, you are amazing! Incredibly talented and completely deserved of all your success. You and Nikita are my winners, no matter what happens x.”
