Maresca, Salah & Motherwell – story of Maswanhise’s rise

Tawanda Maswanhise needed a two-week trial period to convince then manager Stuart Kettlewell that he was worthy of a contract at Motherwell.

The Zimbabwe forward was in search of first-team football having just been released by Leicester City, where he had spent 13 years in the youth set-up.

“There’s lots of potential with Tawanda and hopefully we can get the best out of him,” former boss Kettlewell said after his arrival.

It is safe to say that potential is now being fulfilled.

Little over a year later, he is delivering a talismanic season for high-flying Motherwell and relishing an encounter with Egypt’s Mohamed Salah at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

Developed by Rodgers & moulded by Maresca

Despite a lack of first-team opportunities at Leicester, Maswanhise benefitted from being moulded by top-level coaching during his long spell at the club.

He played just once, an opportunity afforded to him by now Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca when he came on as a substitute in an FA Cup win over Millwall.

Pre-Maresca, Maswanhise credits part of his development to former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who worked at Leicester between 2019 and 2023.

“Having the experience to work under them was really good,” the Motherwell man tells BBC Scotland. “I’d like to say I’ve learned quite a lot, adapting to two high-level managers.

“When I was with Brendan, it was more about getting used to the environment. Enzo needed a platform – he was really good tactically.”

But how do those two compare with his current boss?

Jens Berthel Askou has received plenty of plaudits for implementing a fearless and vibrant approach to a Motherwell side well worth their current standing of third.

“I’d say he is similar,” Maswanhise says when comparing Askou to Rodgers and Maresca. “The tactics and the system are really helping. It’s clearly paying off right now.

What do the numbers say?

Maswanhise has been integral to Motherwell’s push for Europe.

He has 12 goals in all competitions this term, eight of those coming in the league – nobody has more.

On the day his Motherwell signing was confirmed, he came off the bench to register the first of his 23 goal contributions for the club with an assist in a League Cup victory over Kilmarnock.

“It was time for a bit of a new environment, a new lifestyle for me up here in Scotland, and I feel like I’ve settled in really well,” Maswanhise says when recalling his move north.

“And I think it was time to go and get some minutes and first-team football. I got it here and I’m still doing really well. It’s been a good experience.”

His debut set the tone for an explosive start to his Fir Park career, but he has since hit new heights this season.

Playing in a more central role, Askou’s attack is being spearheaded by the speedy forward, who has become a far more clinical finisher this campaign.

His goal conversion rate of 27% from 30 shots makes for good reading, as does his minutes-per-goal average of 160.

‘I won’t be starstruck by Salah’

However, the Fir Park side will have to do without their top forward for a spell after his expected inclusion this week in Mario Marinica’s squad for Afcon in Morocco.

Following Saturday’s trip to Dundee United, Maswanhise would then be guaranteed to miss Motherwell’s next three games – against Dundee, Rangers and Celtic – and that tally would increase if Zimbabwe progress.

While his absence may be sorely felt, his Motherwell team-mates will be willing him on to succeed in a section with Egypt, Angola and South Africa.

An opening group game with Egypt sets up the likelihood of lining up against Liverpool’s disgruntled star, Salah, a match-up that reinforces Maswanhise’s rapid rise.

“I’ll really miss the team, honestly,” he adds. “Hopefully they can continue this form. I’ll be watching from Morocco.

”This is my first big tournament for my nation. Even though I’m one of the small fishes, hopefully I can make a name for myself.

US top court weighs rollback of limits on party campaign spending

The conservative-majority United States Supreme Court is considering arguments in a case that could roll back existing limits on political party spending, potentially opening the door to further loosening campaign finance rules.

Conservative justices, including Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, appeared receptive on Tuesday to a Republican-led push to overturn a 2001 court decision that upheld a federal election law more than 50 years old.

The highest US court has consistently ruled to weaken limits on political spending, meant to prevent well-financed interests from playing an outsized role in the political process. The court’s conservative members have argued that political spending is a constitutionally protected form of free speech.

In 2010, the court reshaped the country’s campaign finance landscape with the landmark ruling Citizens United v Federal Election Commission that struck down previous limits on individual expenditures. Corporations and donors rushed to take advantage, leading to a considerable increase in campaign spending.

According to the transparency watchdog Open Secrets, spending by super PACS, or a kind of political action committee that can raise unlimited funds from donors, corporations, and other groups, rose from $62.6m in 2010, the year of the ruling, to $622.7m two years later. By 2024, the figure had exploded to $4.1bn.

The court has continued to chip away at limits in a series of additional rulings since Citizens United.

“The coordinated party spending limits are at war with this court’s recent First Amendment cases,” Noel Francisco, a lawyer for the Republican challengers, told the justices.

Some of the court’s liberal justices noted the surge in political spending that has accompanied previous decisions on campaign finance.

“Once we take off coordinated expenditure limits, then what’s left?” asked Justice Sonya Sotomayor. “What’s left is nothing. No control whatsoever.”

The case before the court was brought by two Republican committees for House and Senate candidates, and was first filed in Ohio in 2022 when a pair of Ohio Republicans, Steve Chabot and current Vice President JD Vance, were running for Senate.

The Trump administration has joined the request to strike down a prior federal election law intended to prevent arrangements in which wealthy donors circumvent limits on individual spending by directing those sums to a party, with the understanding that it will be spent in support of a particular candidate.

Everything to know about Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet’s relationship

  • Kylie Jenner is the youngest and one of the most successful of the Kardashian siblings. The Kylie Cosmetics founder has previously been in a relationship with rapper Travis Scott and the two share a daughter, Stormi, and son, Aire, but in April 2023, she was linked to actor Timothee Chalamet. The rapper is thought to have dissed the actor in his track Meltdown.
  • The relationship between Kylie and Timothee was confirmed in September of that year when they were spotted kissing at a Beyonce concert. While they kept their relationship mostly private, they were seen at several high profile events together, including the Golden Globes in both 2024 and 2025.
  • Rumours of their split started to circulate after Timothee did not attend the 70th birthday party of Kylie’s mother, Kris Jenner. At the same time, a source told the Daily Mail that the pair had broken up multiple times: “This has happened before – but she talked him into getting back together. She is crazy about him so that could well happen again.”
  • Split rumours intensified after Kylie was seen in a picture from Paris Fashion Week with a Timothee Chalamet lookalike. Kylie wore a bra and skirt and stuck her middle finger up for the racy pic, as she sat next to the mystery man.
  • But, at the premiere for Timothee’s new film, Marty Supreme, the pair posed together in matching outfits, silencing the rumours. They posed with Timothee’s hand firmly on Kylie’s hip. They continued to pack on the PDA throughout the night.

David Walliams makes sad Christmas confession in rare family insight

David Walliams has a new Christmas book out this year which is inspired by his son

David Walliams is gutted to not be spending Christmas this year with his son

Little Britain star David Walliams has opened up about the pain of not spending Christmas Day with his son.

The comedian and his ex-wife Lara Stone co-parent their 12 year old boy Alfred and this year it’s her turn to have their lad with her during the festive holidays. Walliams, who rarely speaks about his private life, says he understands what single parents go through at this time of year when child care is shared.

He said: “I don’t have him for Christmas. I was thinking a bit about sometimes the pain you feel as a parent when you don’t have your child at Christmas.”

The former Britain’s Got Talent judge, 54, explores this theme in his new children’s book Santa & Son. It is about a young boy called Elvis who is being brought up by his single mum. His estranged dad is a retired grumpy Santa and he and Elvis don’t get to see each other that often but they get caught up in an adventure that brings them back closer together.

Speaking about how the story resonates, Walliams said: “The book is about the bond between a father and a son. This dad in the book is a sort of deadbeat dad but there’s definitely a theme running through about parents…separated parents.. and the boy basically hasn’t seen his dad for many years and he sort of gets to spend Christmas with his dad.

“And so I was thinking a bit about sometimes the pain you feel as a parent when you don’t have your child at Christmas. I was thinking about that because I think at Christmas there’s a sort of thing that we’ve all got to be happy but there’s often sort of melancholy creeps in.

“So I wanted a little bit of it. I mean it is a comedy action adventure but I like to have a theme. I like to make a point. It makes it interesting for me. And it means there is something for the reader to take away and to discuss with their parents. I think that’s important.

“If I’m going to go to the effort of writing a book I want there to be some point. Sometimes they’re just funny. Sometimes they’re silly. Sometimes they’re just adventures. But I feel like if I’m going to write a Christmas story, it’s got to have some resonance.”

The Come Fly With Me comic revealed that he would not be having Alfred with him this year and so he was having an early Christmas by flying off to The Maldives with him as a treat.

He told The Mike Hosking Radio Breakfast Show: “I am taking my son away before Christmas to The Maldives. He’s really into scuba diving. So we’re gonna go diving together and I’m very excited. I don’t have him for Christmas, which is probably what I was talking about just now.

“But I have my mum, my sister, my nephew, so that’s all good. But yeah, I don’t mind. London’s quite exciting in the run up to Christmas with the Christmas menus and the restaurants, the lights are up and the pantomimes are on. And so it does become quite exciting. I rather like being in London at Christmas.”

Walliams also revealed how he went through a very sad time at Christmas back in 2008 when his father died. He added: “I remember my dad died some 17 years ago now but it was in November and I remember sort of dreading the first Christmas without him and it was just horrendous missing him.

“And so it’s one of these things, isn’t it? It’s a time where it’s almost like you’re forced to be happy, but it’s not always the happiest, especially if something has gone on like you’re grieving or something.”

MAFS UK bride Rebecca confirms ‘new love’ after heartbreaking Bailey split

Married At First Sight UK star Rebecca has confirmed she has a “new love” in her life weeks after confirming her split from her on-screen husband Bailey

A Married At First Sight UK favourite has hinted at a “new love” just weeks after revealing the true circumstances behind her televised romance falling apart.

Throughout their stint on the programme, Rebecca and Bailey captured viewers’ hearts as their bond seemed to strengthen with each passing day, successfully making it through final vows and transitioning into real-world life.

Although Rebecca initially harboured doubts about Bailey not being an “alpha male” during their wedding ceremony, their chemistry flourished during their honeymoon getaway.

Viewers watched the pair adjusting to life in the Married At First Sight UK flats before introducing each other to friends and relatives, which sparked worries about the geographical distance separating them beyond the experiment.

Nevertheless, both chose to pursue their romance and work through the challenges in the real world. Yet they later revealed their split occurred approximately one month following the show’s conclusion.

The pair announced their separation via social media in November, with bride Rebecca previously explaining the reasons behind their breakup, reports OK!.

Speaking to Cosmopolitan, she revealed that “things changed” after cameras stopped rolling, stating: “As Bailey stated in his recent statement, events that happened as soon as he broke up with me meant there was never any chance of us rekindling things.”

But now, the reality star has disclosed a “new love” after revealing to followers she was no longer single. When quizzed on her Instagram stories about whether there was a “new love” in her life, Rebecca responded: “Yes, there’s a new love in my life and I’m a very happy girly.”

During her online Q&A session, she was subsequently asked whether her new romance was with “someone you knew before doing the show” to which she replied: “No. I met my ‘new love’ after the show x.”

Rebecca later clarified her relationship status when responding to another enquiry, stating: “I’m not single but I do know what you mean. I found it so weird when I turned 30, I felt so much pressure to be in a relationship, like I was missing out and everyone else was moving on.

“Just remember that the best relationship you’ll ever have is with yourself. Be happy in your own company and fill your own cup. When it’s meant to happen for you, it will. Trust in the universe.”

The MAFS UK personality was also questioned whether supporters would be “getting a hard launch of your new love any time soon”, referring to a public announcement, prompting the star to respond via video. She captioned the clip “hehe x” before delivering a straightforward “yes.”

Previously, when confirming their separation, groom Bailey acknowledged that he “didn’t handle the breakup well” but refrained from elaborating on post-split events. Dismissing speculation he had been unfaithful to his former partner, he stated: “I’m still heartbroken, but I wish Bec all the best and I always will.”

In contrast to Bailey, the Liverpool bride chose not to share a heartfelt statement about their split.

Instead, she took to Instagram with a solo picture of herself, captioning it: “To answer all the questions…. Yes, he fumbled.”

Fifa accused of breaching own rules with Trump award

Fifa’s ethics committee has been asked to investigate president Gianni Infantino, claiming he broke the governing body’s rules on political neutrality in relation to United States president Donald Trump.

Infantino awarded Trump with the inaugural Fifa peace prize at the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington DC last week, and has also done social media posts and interviews in support of the 79-year-old.

Human rights campaign group FairSquare has written a letter of complaint, which BBC Sport has seen, alleging Infantino has “committed four clear breaches” of Fifa’s neutrality rules.

“The Fifa president does not have the authority to unilaterally dictate the organisation’s mission, strategic direction, policies and values.”

BBC Sport has contacted football’s world governing body for comment.

Infantino and Trump stood side by side during the glittering ceremony at the Kennedy Center for next year’s tournament, which takes place in the US, Canada and Mexico from 11 June-19 July.

As well as a large golden trophy, Trump received a medal and certificate from Infantino, who said “this is what we want from a leader” and “you can always count, Mr President, on my support” during a speech that followed a video before the presentation.

In October, the 55-year-old posted on Instagram saying Trump “definitely deserves” the Nobel Peace Prize.

During an interview in November at the American Business Forum in Miami, Infantino also added: “We should all support what [Trump] is doing [in the US] because I think it’s looking pretty good.”

FairSquare also alleged a video post by Infantino on Instagram in January – following his invite to Trump’s inauguration – “indicates support for President Trump’s political agenda”.

Nicholas McGeehan, FairSquare’s programme director, added: “This complaint is about a lot more than Infantino’s support for President Donald Trump’s political agenda.
