Defence Minister Hails Military’s Rapid Response To Benin Coup Attempt

The Minister of Defence, Retired General Christopher Musa, has applauded the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their rapid intervention during last Sunday’s attempted coup in the Republic of Benin.

Speaking in Abuja at the investiture of twenty-eight newly promoted senior Army officers, General Musa said the professional response of the Nigerian Armed Forces played a key role in thwarting the plot.

He explained that the incident serves as a reminder that the military must remain vigilant at all times, prepared to protect Nigeria and its allies from emerging threats.

General Musa, however, stressed that no arm of the military can operate successfully in isolation, emphasizing that national security requires seamless joint operations across the Army, Navy, Air Force, and other security agencies.

Acting on two separate requests from the Government of Benin, President Tinubu first ordered Nigerian Air Force fighter jets to enter the country and take over the airspace to help dislodge the coup plotters from the National TV and a military camp where they had regrouped.

The decoration ceremony took place at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess 1, Asokoro, Abuja, where 28 Brigadier Generals were elevated to the rank of Major General, including a posthumous promotion.

General Musa, who was the Special Guest of Honour, praised the officers for their courage, professionalism and years of selfless sacrifice.

He noted that their elevation underscores their consistent commitment to national security and the collective effort to strengthen the Nigerian Army.

He urged them to confront emerging security threats with fresh resolve, stating that their new roles place them in pivotal positions to shape the strategic trajectory of the Army.

“These officers are among the finest leaders in our Armed Forces,” he said, expressing personal pride in their achievements.

The Minister further emphasized the need for deeper inter-service cooperation, enhanced intelligence sharing and unity of effort across all security agencies.

‘I swapped my £400 North Face puffer coat for one half the price and it’s even warmer’

On the lookout for a new winter coat? Beauty editor Laura Mulley thinks she’s found it with this duvet-style puffer coat that keeps you so warm even when temperatures plummet

Living in the north of England, a warm and practical winter coat is an essential item in my wardrobe, having to practically live in it throughout the autumn and winter months. Thick, duvet-like puffer coats are hugely popular at the moment, and if you’re looking for a recommendation for an excellent one, I’ve found it – and it’s better than my old one that was double the price.

I recently swapped my old The North Face puffer coat – which cost at least £400 when bought new a few years ago, and which still retails for around this price – for a similar style coat but which costs around half the price: Columbia’s Amaze Puff Hooded Down Puffer – and I’m super impressed by how warm and snuggly it is.

The long one that I’ve got costs £270, and while the exact long black style I’ve got is now only available in limited sizes online, you can find various other colours and sizes both on the Columbia website and on ASOS. And if you’re willing to sacrifice a little length, the midi version of the black is still available in all sizes on the brand’s website for £235.

There are a number of reasons why I think it outperforms my previous coat in terms of warmth, comfort and fit. Firstly – and perhaps my old coat had gone a little flat over time – but it just feels softer, puffier and more cloud-like, really cocooning the body.

Unlike my North Face one, is also has adjustable elastic ties around the waist on the inside, which not only adds a little shape but also pulls the coat closer to your body. Additionally there are also cuffs with thumbholes on the sleeves, stopping gusts of wind from creeping up your coat sleeves.

Other practical features include a removable hood, fleece-lined pockets and straps for carrying the coat on your back if you get too hot – something that I didn’t realise was a thing until I saw my friend make use of those in her coat on an unexpectedly warm day.

One minor downside is that I do find that the zip occasionally gets stuck and needs some wiggling to get free, and it is a little bit closer fitting to the body than my old one; if you’re between sizes and planning on wearing it over lots of thick layers, you may want to go up a size.

If £270 (or £235) is out of your budget, I’ve also found some cheaper options: this French Connection coat in this season’s must-have shade, chocolate brown, is now reduced from £159.99 to an impressive £39.99 here, while for something a little trendier, this shiny berry-coloured Feather & Down Stormwear Diamond Quilted Padded Coat from M&S is £115.

Nine Russians and Belarusians cleared for Winter Olympics

Nine Russian and Belarusian athletes have been granted permission to compete in qualifying events for next year’s Winter Olympics as neutral athletes.

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) had initially banned them from taking part but the ban was overturned by a sports court last week.

The select athletes have now received Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) status after meeting the International Olympic Committee’s (ICC) eligibility criteria, but will not be able to compete under the flag of their country.

In October, the FIS council had voted against Russians and Belarusians competing in its qualification events for the Games in Milan and Cortina, which starts on 6 February.

The Russian Ski Association (RSF), the Belarusian Ski Union (BSU) and 17 athletes from the countries made appeals against the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) which partially upheld them, clearing the way for previously banned athletes to take part in the Games.

Belarusian freestyle skiing aerialist Hanna Huskova, who won gold at Pyeongchang 2018 and silver at Beijing 2022, headlines the initial list alongside Russia’s Anastasia Tatalina, who took gold in the women’s ski big air at the 2021 World Championships.

More athletes could also now be granted permission to compete.

“Over the course of the upcoming days and weeks, as more eligibility reviews are conducted and more decisions are made, FIS will publish updated versions of the AIN list,” the sport’s governing body said in a statement.

Athletes with Russian or Belarusian passports have been banned from many sports since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

In September the IOC said it would allow neutral athletes to compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics under the same conditions they did at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but that the final decision would rest with individual sports federations.
