Davina McCall’s ‘angry’ response to devastating diagnosis as she says ‘it’s been a lot’

The Big Brother and Masked Singer presenter has reflected on the triumphs and tragedies of the past twelve months – and spoken honestly of her ‘difficult conversations’ with new husband Michael Douglas

The past twelve months of so have been a turbulent time for Davina McCall. Diagnosed with a colloid cyst, a rare type of benign brain tumour, in November last year she was then – almost exactly a year later – given the bombshell news that she was suffering from breast cancer.

While she was given immediate treatment for both conditions, and her overall prognosis is very positive, the TV presenter admitted to feeling a degree of anger about her health woes.

“It’s been a lot,” she told Woman’s Way magazine. “I was very angry when I found out. But I let go of that and I feel in a much more positive place now. I think my message is get checked if you’re worried. Check yourself regularly. If you are due a mammogram, then get it done.”

Davina added that, for her “life was never going to be the same again” but was choosing to see her harrowing year as a learning experience.

There was also a bright spot for Davina in 2025, as she married long-term partner Michael Douglas in a quiet ceremony earlier this month.

Davina revealed that she’d been forced to have some difficult conversations with Michael ahead of her brain surgery. She continued: “I said ‘Look, I’ve got to plan for if it doesn’t go according to plan’.

“There were a lot of things that could be a risk,” she added. “We had that talk quite soon and I did go and address my will and make sure that was airtight. I talked to Michael about my wishes – I wrote letters of wishes to the children and put those in my will.”

Davina shares three children with her ex-husband, Pet Rescue’s Matthew Robertson: Holly, 23, Tilly, 21, and Chester, 18.

Stressing that she had complete faith in neurosurgeon Kevin O’Neill, who led the team that removed the cyst on he brain, Davina acknowledged that the outcome of the procedure could have been very different.

She explained: ”I was saying ‘I love you’ a lot and I was saying `I’ve had an amazing life’ to all of the kids.

“It was because I wanted them to know that if anything bad ever happened to me because look, we could get run over by a bus tomorrow, don’t feel sad. “I have had an amazing life, a life that you would want someone you love to have. It’s had its ups and downs; it’s been carnage, it’s been amazing, but it’s been mega.

O’Neill ‘would happily have stayed on’ at Celtic

Martin O’Neill would “happily have stayed on” as Celtic manager after his interim spell ended with seven wins out of eight games.

The former Northern Ireland player stepped in to replace Brendan Rodgers, who resigned in late October. Wilfried Nancy subsequently took on the job permanently and has lost all three of his opening games in charge.

O’Neill described his near six-week spell back at the club he managed from 2000 to 2005 as “holding the fort for while”.

However, he said remaining in charge for Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup final, which Celtic lost to St Mirren, was not a motivating factor.

“That was not a driving force. I’d happily have stayed on.

O’Neill, 73, said he had only had a “10 or 15-minute conversation” with the “affable” Nancy as the changeover took place earlier this month.

The Frenchman endured home losses to Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts and Europa League opponents Roma before Sunday’s 3-1 cup final defeat.

“I stepped into the job, [major shareholder] Dermot [Desmond] had said to me, he said, ‘you could be in it two weeks or two months, we’re looking for someone’,” O’Neill explained.

“When you get into it, you really enjoy it. You enjoy winning, that’s the point – this is what it’s about.

“You’ve got to give managers chances. I think back to my own time at Leicester City, where I eventually enjoyed nice success. Can’t win a game to save my life, crowd baying for blood and after 10 games. How lucky I was to win a couple of matches of real importance at a stage.

“You’ve just got to win, you’ve got to win. You’ve got to steady it again. There’s some excellent players at the football club. There’s some boys who have won big time as well. Lean on some of the senior players. Lean on them and get them on your side.

“It is recoverable, of course. You’re in the football club 10 or 12 days.

‘Disunited Celtic need harmony again’

Former Aston Villa boss O’Neill, who oversaw five Scottish Premiership wins, a semi-final defeat of Rangers and a memorable Europa League victory at Feyenoord, felt “reinvigorated” from his “whirlwind time” back in Glasgow.

“I was very, very worried about it,” he said.

“If you fail, you are considered too old for the job and that this is a young man’s game.

“Thankfully, I don’t think I messed it up.”

O’Neill feels Celtic “need harmony again” amid unrest between fans and the board.

“Celtic disunited are not the Celtic that people should be aware of,” he said.

And, when asked if his brief return to management had whetted his appetite for another job, his answer was clear: “I would have to say absolutely.
