Romanians mount mass protests over judicial corruption

Mass protests have filled the streets of several Romanian cities for a fifth day in a row against alleged judicial corruption.

Thousands took to the streets of capital Bucharest and other cities on Sunday to show support for judges and prosecutors that denounced systemic abuse in the judicial system in an investigative documentary.

Aired by media outlet Recorder on Tuesday, the documentary alleged that politically backed senior judges use legal loopholes for unethical practices – including questionable acquittals. Judges and prosecutors who complain assert that they often face disciplinary action.

Roughly 10,000 people marched in Bucharest on Sunday evening, chanting “Justice not corruption” and “Independence not obedience”, according to the Reuters news agency.

Thousands of protesters also gathered in other cities across Romania, as they have each day since the protests erupted on Wednesday.

The same day, several hundred judges and prosecutors signed an open letter on social media denouncing “profound and systemic dysfunction” in the justice system.

“Truth and integrity must not be penalised but protected. Silence is not an option when the values of the profession are threatened,” said the letter, which attracted support from politicians and business leaders.

President Nicusor Dan announced he would hold consultations with members of the judiciary on December 22, saying the number of complaints regarding “an integrity problem in the justice system” indicated “things are very serious.”

Judicial corruption has been a long-running issue in Romania. The southeastern European state’s judicial system was kept under special monitoring by Brussels even after it had met the requirements to join the European Union in 2007.

That observation was lifted in 2023. The pace of anticorruption investigations has since slowed, and the judiciary has delivered some high-level acquittals that have raised concerns that the fight against corruption has waned.

Romania, which ranks poorly in Transparency International’s corruption perception index, included corruption among the main vulnerabilities in its new defence strategy adopted by parliament in November.

Several judges and prosecutors who have spoken out against systemic abuses over the years have been transferred, demoted, investigated or sacked outright.

One of the courts mentioned in the documentary, the Bucharest Court of Appeal, defended itself in a news conference last week, but one of its judges broke ranks and publicly denounced pressure behind closed doors.

Angry Ginge and Lisa Riley update on I’m A Celeb weight loss update in live BMI test

Angry Ginge, 24, managed to shift 7kg whilst taking part in I’m A Celebrity but his BMI was higher than expected after he did the test alongside campmate Lisa Riley

Furious Angry Ginge lived up to his name after discovering the results of his BMI test – finding out he’s still classed as overweight despite weeks of eating next to nothing in camp.

The King of the Jungle shifted 7kg on the show as the stars suffered from a serious lack of food in the Outback. But despite the impressive weight-loss, it was still not enough for the streaming star to be considered officially healthy.

Campmate Lisa Riley joined the social media star, real name Morgan Burtwistle, as they pumped their details into the website which calculate your body mass index. Your BMI is a value derived from the mass and height of a person and is defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body height, taking into account age and gender.

But Ginge was not happy when he read his data after living off rice, beans and animal’s unmentionables for almost a month. As they waited, he told Lisa: “I lost 7kg. I was in the overweight category. So now, am I going to be in healthy or am I still overweight?”

Then the big reveal came and he found out he had a BMI of 26 – keeping him in the overweight range. “For f**k’s sake, man,” he fumed to his co-star, who dropped from a size 28 to a size 12 in just 18 months. Lisa didn’t let fans in on her result.

The NHS website states: “An overweight result suggests you could benefit from making some healthy changed. If you want to lose some weight, working towards a healthier weight range could reduce the risk of long-term conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.”

Speaking on This Morning, presenters Cat Deeley and Ben Shepard asked Ginge how he dealt with the food deprivation in camp. He responded: “To be honest, I was actually looking forward to that because I went on there as a bit of a weight loss journey and I lost 7kg. So I can’t say it wasn’t successful.”

Going forward, he aims ro maintain his weight loss and confirmed he is going to “cut down on fizzy drinks”. Ginge was crowned the winner last Sunday with Tom Read Wilson finishing in second place. Former EastEnders actress, Shona McGarty, finished in third place and musician Aitch was voted out on Saturday night.

When asked about the lack of food, he said: “I was looking forward to that, I went on there as a bit of a weight loss journey, and I lost seven kg, so I can’t say it wasn’t successful.” While laughing, Ginge added: “I’m probably not recognisable.”

After arriving back at his hotel, Ginge was met with snacks including Pringles and a can of Red Bull to boost his energy levels. But there was one thing he had his mind on – a full English breakfast, which he devoured, but he laughed when revealing that he left the tomatoes on the side so he could focus on hash browns.

One memorable moment of Ginge’s experience was winning milk bottle sweets with Kelly Brook and his close pal Aitch. But unbeknownst to their campmates, the trio secretly ate some of the sweet treats before returning to camp. This, however, became public knowledge when Kelly dropped the bombshell that they’d eaten some when she was evicted.

Ginge said: “I’ll be honest, Kelly, she bottled that one if you pardon the pun, she just said there was more than 10, so we could play it off as 13, if she said there were 20, we were going to struggle. I didn’t enjoy stealing them, but I’m not going to lie, they were bloody delicious.”

Having found fame on social media thanks to streaming, Ginge spends a significant proportion of his day on his phone and laptop, something which he now admits will change. He said: “I think it’s matured me into more of a family man, I take for granted going for meals with my family, always on my phone.”

Mysterious note found next to body of tragic Mask star Peter Greene

Actor Peter Greene, who established himself as an onscreen villain during the 1990s, was found unresponsive inside his New York City apartment on Friday afternoon

A hand-written discovered was found next to the body of a tragic actor Peter Greene, investigators have revealed. The star died after being found unresponsive in his home in New York City on Friday. The 60-year-old, who played Zed in Pulp Fiction and starred in a whole host of films, including The Mask and Training Day, was found motionless in his apartment and pronounced dead at the scene.

While the cause of his death has not been announced, a mysterious message referencing a 1970s New York City gang was found next to him. The note is reported to have read “I’m still a Westie” – which is understood to be a reference to the Irish-American gang, the Westies. No other details have been revealed.

No foul play is suspected and the cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner, police said. Paul’s longtime manager Gregg Edwards spoke hours after the tragic discovery, saying: “He was a terrific guy. Truly one of the great actors of our generation. His heart was as big as there was. I’m going to miss him. He was a great friend.”

He was due to undergo surgery to remove a benign tumour near his lung on the day he died. “He was a little nervous about the operation going in, but he said it wasn’t super serious,” his manager said.

“He sounded OK. It was just a totally normal conversation.” Greene is survived by his 16-year-old son Ryder.

The actor built a reputation in the 1990s as one of Hollywood’s most memorable screen villains. He played sadistic security guard Zed in Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 hit Pulp Fiction, and ruthless mobster Dorian Tyrell opposite Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz in The Mask.

The father, who hailed from Montclair, New Jersey, ran away from home at 15 and lived on the streets of the Big Apple, where he turned to drug use and eventually dealing, he told Premier magazine in 1996. After attempting suicide in March that year, he sought treatment for his addictions, he said at the time.

He had around 95 film credits to his name and starred in “Laws of Gravity,” “Clean, Shaven,” “Blue Streak,” and “Training Day.” Mr Edwards said he was “a perfectionist who gave every job his all and wanted his performance to be just right”.

He added: “He worked with so many amazing actors and directors. He fought his demons but overcame them.”

A neighbour spoke about the tragic day to the New York Daily News, saying “Peter was lying on the floor, facedown, [with a] facial injury, blood everywhere”.

Fans of the actor flocked to social media to pay their tribute to the star from New Jersey, who was slated to begin filming with Mickey Rourke in January on an independent production called Mascots. One wrote: “This is heartbreaking news.”

Jeff Brazier posts statement after split from wife and on-air outburst at Ruth Langsford

TV star, Jeff Brazier, confirmed that his marriage to PR guru, Kate Dwyer, was over in the summer, after admitting the couple could ‘no longer make each other happy’

Jeff Brazier has posted a cryptic statement after calling it quits with his wife of seven years, Kate, in the summer. The TV star, who is dad to EastEnders actor, Bobby, 22, and his brother, Freddie, 20, admitted the couple “could no longer make each other happy” as he announced they had broken up in November for the second time after also separating briefly in 2023.

Fans flocked to social media to share their commiserations following the news, but now Jeff has revealed he has been ‘reflecting on life’ in his latest post on Instagram – in which he can be seen soaking up the sun in the Caribbean.

Sharing a snap of himself looking out to sea on the stunning island of St Kitts, where he had been filming for ITV before posting another shot of himself larking about in his swimming trunks, Jeff wrote: “Just had the perfect week in St Kitts thanks to @stkittstourism Celebrating the sunshine and time to reflect on life & work while spending time with the team filming for one of our big @itvwin January competitions.”

He also shared a slew of beaming selfies amid his return to normality and told fans he was rocking a ‘healthy glow’ before hitting the gym. It comes after the Shipwrecked star shocked Loose Women viewers when he appeared to take a swipe at show host, Ruth Langsford.

In a very awkward exchange, the Postcode Lottery star warned the seasoned star about ‘eating into his screen time’ as he presented the competition segment on the ITV show.

Just moments after telling Ruth she looked gorgeous in her outfit, Jeff told the mum-of-one she was ‘taking up his time’ on air after she replied, briefly, to his compliment. Ruth looked stunned after Jeff’s retort, but simply said: “Whatever” before adding: “Your wish is my command.”

Insiders have since claimed while Ruth did not want to make a complaint about the comment, Jeff was given a talking to about the on-screen incident.

A Loose Women insider told The Sun: “Jeff’s cross words came out of nowhere and really took Ruth aback. He was spoken to by bosses who understand he’s dealing with a lot of stress at the moment, but warned there’s no excuse for taking it out on Ruth.”

The source added that Jeff was suggested to take some time away from the show, according to the publication, given that he’s only recently announced the breakdown of his marriage.

Announcing his split from Kate in November, Jeff wrote: “‘I’m so full of love and gratitude for Kate. For all we achieved, for how much we grew, for everything we endured. We separated in the summer and kept it private for as long as we could to give us some time to adjust.

“We both deserve complete happiness and we’re upset that we ultimately couldn’t be that for one another and It felt time to let it go.”

Vernon Kay reveals how Tess Daly really felt about ‘bonkers’ Strictly tribute

Strictly Come Dancing presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman were honoured with a highlights reel and golden trophy on Saturday ahead of their exit from the show

Vernon Kay has shared Tess Daly’s true thoughts on Strictly Come Dancing’s “bonkers” tribute to her. Tess, 56, announced last month that she would be leaving the hit BBC show along with co-host Claudia Winkleman.

The mother-of-two has presented Strictly since its inception in 2004, initially lining up alongside the late Sir Bruce Forsyth. Claudia joined the hit show in 2014, having previously hosted the Sunday night results programme.

Fans of the show were left “sobbing” on Saturday when Tess and Claudia were surprised with a special video tribute. It featured new interviews from the judges and footage from their early years alongside Sir Bruce.

The pair were then surprised with a special golden edition of the competition’s famous Glitterball Trophy. Speaking on BBC Radio 2 on Monday (December 15), presenter Scott Mills described the moment as “emotional”.

In a conversation with Tess’ husband, fellow Radio 2 star Vernon Kay, Scott said: “[It was] Really emotional I thought with Tess and Claudia on Saturday, the montage. It just makes you realise, God they looked so different.”

Vernon recalled the “bonkers” moment he sat down to watch the show with Tess, as well as daughters Phoebe and Amber. While the family were initially set to watch the show separately, Tess and Vernon decided they wanted to settle down together.

Vernon said: “They looked like babies. Twenty one years ago though, isn’t it? It was nice because we stopped, rewound it, because we didn’t watch it initially…when it started we weren’t all in the same room.

“When we got to the montage bit, we called the girls down, and the bit where someone mentioned that Tess was pregnant during the first series and Phoebe was watching it, that was bonkers.”

Scott went on to say everyone will be “in bits” when Tess and Claudia present their final show. It prompted Vernon to add: “It’s going to be emotional because it’s just one of those… it’s been 21 years.”

During Saturday’s live show, Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood paid tribute to Tess and Claudia while presenting them with the golden trophy. He said: “We as judges, because this is our last time in the Clauditorium with the gorgeous Claudia and Tess, and we just want to tell you both how much we’re going to miss you.

“How much we totally and utterly love you to bits… We really, really love you both, we really do.”

It prompted Claudia to get emotional as she added: “Thank you so much. I can’t believe it, we’re so lucky. You four and everybody who makes the team, it’s been an honour.”
