Honduras election official says ‘disturbances’ preventing vote recount

The head of Honduras’s National Electoral Council (CNE) has decried acts preventing the ongoing recount of the Central American country’s presidential election, as a regional body said there was no reason to suspect fraud in the November 30 vote.

Ana Paola Hall’s statement on Monday came amid ongoing protests and unrest over the unresolved election. Nasry Asfura, a right-wing businessman publicly supported by US President Donald Trump, has held a razor-thin lead over his top opponent, Salvador Nasralla.

At least 99 percent of votes have already been counted, but CNE has said that nearly 2,800 ballots will need to be re-examined through a special recount.

In a post on X, Hall said disturbances seen in the country’s capital, Tegucigalpa, have “prevented the necessary conditions for the special recount to begin”.

Observers have said infighting at the CNE, which is run by three officials each representing one of the major political parties, has delayed reaching the final results.

Both Nasralla, a conservative, and outgoing left-wing President Xiomara Castro have alleged vote tampering, although several international missions have dismissed the claims.

On Monday, the Organization of American States (OAS), a regional body, said that despite a lack of expertise in overseeing the election, there was not “any evidence that would cast doubt on the results”.

The OAS mission “urgently calls on the electoral authorities to immediately begin the special recount and to explore all possible ways to obtain the official results as quickly as possible,” OAS official Eladio Loizaga said in a report he read to the group’s members.

“The current delay in processing and publishing the results is not justifiable,” he said in the report.

The OAS statement added that its mission of 101 observers from 19 countries “did not observe any malice or obvious manipulation of the electoral materials or computer systems”. The finding was in line with that of a parallel European Union mission.

The election in Honduras had been in turmoil even before polls opened, with several major parties, political figures, and foreign interference for months casting doubt on the election’s integrity.

The most prominent scandal involved an investigation by the attorney general into a member of Asfura’s National Party for allegedly discussing plans with a military officer to influence the vote.

The candidate for outgoing President Castro’s LIBRE party, Rixi Moncada, later told Reuters news agency that the alleged conspiracy proved the election was “the most rigged in history”.

Several candidates have also criticised the influence of Trump, who endorsed Asfura in the final stretch of the race and vowed to withhold US funding if his candidate did not win.

The US president also pardoned former Honduran President and National Party member Juan Orlando Hernandez, who had been convicted in the US of drug trafficking, two days before the vote.

Donald Trump blasted by former ally after sickening Rob Reiner post

Donald Trump has been criticised by one of his former allies after sharing a sickening post about Rob Reiner’s death.

The film director and his wife Michele were found dead at their home in Los Angeles on Sunday. Today, police confirmed their son Nick Reiner, 32, has been arrested and remains in custody.

After several high-profile celebrities paid tribute to Reiner, who created some of the most well-known movies of the 1980s and 1990s, the US president took to social media to criticise the late director, claiming he had “a mind crippling disease known as Trump derangement syndrome” and had “driven people crazy by his raging obsession” with the Republican politician. Reiner, a vocal critic of Trump, was one of the most active Democrats in the film industry, regularly campaigning on behalf of liberal causes and hosting fundraisers.

The US president wrote on Truth Social: “A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.

“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican whom Trump branded a “traitor” for disagreeing with him, responded to Trump’s message by saying: “Rob Reiner and his wife were tragically killed at the hands of their own son, who reportedly had drug addiction and other issues, and their remaining children are left in serious mourning and heartbreak.

“This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies. Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder.”

Trump was also criticised by Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky who tweeted on X that regardless of how one felt about Reiner, “this is inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered.” Rep. Mike Lawler of New York said of Trump’s post: “This statement is wrong. Regardless of one’s political views, no one should be subjected to violence, let alone at the hands of their own son. It’s a horrible tragedy that should engender sympathy and compassion from everyone in our country, period.”

Among those expressing their condolences to Reiner’s family were former presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama. Biden tweeted: “Jill and I send our deepest condolences to everyone whose lives were touched by Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner’s extraordinary contributions. We take solace in knowing their work will live on for generations to come.”

Obama said: “Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people – and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.

“Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”

Rob Reiner admitted ‘we love our kids – even the bad ones’ in heartbreaking admission

In a chilling admission just months before he was murdered, Rob Reiner admitted he loved his children, ‘even the bad ones’, in what is believed to be one of his final interviews

Rob Reiner said he “loved his kids – even the bad one” months before his death. The Hollywood film director and his wife, Michele, were found dead at their home in Los Angeles.

The couple allegedly had their throats slit by a relative after an argument. Documents obtained by the Mirror have shown that their son Nick, 32, is currently being held in custody. He is also being held on a $4million (£3million) bail in connection with the murder.

The agency description of his arrest was listed as “Gang Activity.” Nick was arrested on Sunday at 21:15 local time and booked on Monday morning. But in what is believed to be one of Rob’s final interviews, he admitted he loved all of his children “even the bad ones”.

Speaking to Piers Morgan, Rob said: “Well, I mean, listen, people have their favourites. [It’s] the cliché, ‘We love all our children, even the bad ones.” Reports claim that Rob and his son Nick had a “very loud argument” while attending Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on Saturday night.

TMZ reports that Rob and Michele then left the party. A source told the publication that Michele had been telling friends in her final months that she and Rob were at their “wits’ end” over Nick and his alleged substance abuse, saying: “We’ve tried everything.”

The Los Angeles Fire Department were called to the home in Brentwood to offer medical aid at 3:30pm local time on Sunday and found a man, 78, and a woman, 68. They had already died. Police confirmed that both victims had suffered from lacerations “consistent with a knife [attack].”

It’s believed that their daughter, Romy, had discovered them at the huge property. Romy has told police that a family member “should be a suspect” as they were “dangerous”.

A spokesperson for the Reiner family said: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

Meanwhile, Rob’s eldest daughter, Tracy Reiner, who was adopted by the star during his first marriage to Penny Marshall, said she was in “shock.” Speaking to NBC, she said: “I came from the greatest family ever. I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”

She told how she had seen her father the day before for a family gathering. “I came from the greatest family ever,” she said. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.” A senior officer told the Mirror that investigators intended to speak with all relevant family members and associates as part of a routine procedure in a case of this nature.

“We’re going to try to speak to every family member that we can to get to the facts of this investigation,” the officer said, adding that detectives were set to re-enter the sprawling six-bedroomed property to conduct a detailed forensic examination.

He noted that the house had been left in the same condition as when officers first arrived, after police determined there was no ongoing threat. During a press conference on Sunday, the police confirmed that they were seeking to obtain a search warrant for a home and were “not looking for anyone as a suspect or in any other manner.”

How Messi’s GOAT tour of India hit trouble

Getty Images

Lionel Messi made headlines for all the wrong reasons on Saturday when his three-day tour of India descended into violence.

The Argentina legend was visiting the city of Kolkata at the start of a whistle-stop visit taking in four cities.

Many of Messi’s fans were left feeling short-changed when they failed to get a glimpse of one of the world’s most famous players.

It was the first time Messi had been to India since 2011.

Why was Messi in India?

Fresh from helping Inter Miami win the MLS Cup for the first time, Messi was embarking on a promotional tour.

It was called the GOAT India Tour 2025 – GOAT meaning ‘greatest of all time’.

Messi was joined by Uruguay star Luis Suarez and Argentina’s Rodrigo de Paul, who also play for Inter Miami.

The tour started in Kolkata on Saturday. The trio moved on to Hyderabad later that day, then to Mumbai on Sunday before finishing in New Delhi on Monday.

How much did tickets cost?

There was a variety of ticket options to suit budgets.

For access to the stadium only, face value tickets cost 3,500 rupees (£29) for Kolkata and Hyderabad. For New Dehli, the price was 4,200 rupees (£35).

However, this is about half the average weekly wage in India. But with tickets sold out, fans were paying much more for the chance to see Messi.

Reports in Indian media said some locals had paid up to 12,000 rupees (£99) to get in.

What was supposed to happen in Kolkata?

Messi landed in Kolkata at 01:30 local time. Thousands lined the roads and congregated outside his hotel to catch a glimpse of him.

The day began with the meet-and-greet ticket holders first up from 09:00 to 10:30.

Then the day took a strange twist.

A 70ft statue of Messi lifting the World Cup was unveiled by the former Barcelona icon.

But he was not present – it was a virtual unveiling. He was on a video screen and pressed a button on a remote control. At this point a blue sheet dropped to reveal the huge iron structure.

Messi met with Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan before heading to Salt Lake Stadium for 11:30.

The plan was for him to be at the ground for an hour. He was gone after only 20 minutes and violence erupted because ticket holders did not get to see Messi among the throng of security, politicians and celebrities.

“Only leaders and actors were surrounding Messi. Why did they call us then? We have got a ticket for 12,000 rupees, but we were not even able to see his face,” a fan at the stadium told Indian news agency ANI.

One angry supporter told the Press Trust of India news agency that people had paid the equivalent of a month’s salary to see the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“I paid 5,000 rupees for the ticket and came with my son to watch Messi, not politicians,” they said.

“The police and military personnel were taking selfies, and the management is to blame.”

There was supposed to be a friendly match, more of kickabout, with some local players but this did not happen.

Messi was whisked off to Hyderabad.

What was the extent of the trouble in Kolkata?

Messi walked out at the stadium waving to fans, but after his appearance was abruptly ended some frustrated supporters stormed the pitch and vandalised banners and tents, while others hurled plastic chairs and water bottles.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said she was “deeply disturbed and shocked” by the events.

Announcing an enquiry, Banerjee apologised to Messi and “sports lovers” for the scenes at the stadium.

“The [enquiry] committee will conduct a detailed enquiry into the incident, fix responsibility, and recommend measures to prevent such occurrences in the future,” she added on X.

A spokesperson for Messi said he fulfilled the time commitment that had been agreed in advance. In terms of the organisation of the event itself, he referred the BBC to the apology issued by Banerjee on social media.

Kolkata’s Telegraph newspaper said in an editorial piece that “poor management of a hyped-up event, lack of co-ordination” and security lapses turned the stadium into a “battlefield”.

What happened on the rest of Messi’s tour?

The rest of the tour appears to have gone without a hitch, with fans getting to see Messi, Suarez and De Paul.

The Times of India reported how the event in Hyderabad went smoothly, with the stands full and Messi staying on the pitch for a full hour.

After leaving Hyderabad, on Sunday Messi met with India cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar in Mumbai.

ICC rejects Israeli bid to block Gaza war crimes investigation

The appeals chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has rejected one of Israel’s legal challenges seeking to block an investigation into its actions in the genocidal war against the Palestinian people in Gaza, dealing a blow to Israel’s efforts to derail the case.

In their decision issued on Monday, judges refused to overturn a lower court decision allowing the ICC prosecutor to investigate alleged crimes in Israel’s war on Gaza following the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

The decision clears the way for the continuation of the court’s Palestine investigation, which led to the issuance of arrest warrants in November last year for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Israel does not recognise the jurisdiction of the Hague-based court and has repeatedly denied committing war crimes in Gaza.

The ICC had also issued an arrest warrant for Hamas leader Ibrahim al-Masri, but later withdrew it after credible reports of his death.

The appeal focused on whether the ICC prosecutor was required to issue a fresh notification to Israel before investigating events that took place after October 7, 2023. Israel argued that the post-October 7 assault on Gaza constituted a new situation, triggered by additional referrals submitted to the court by seven other countries since November 2023, including South Africa, Chile and Mexico.

Judges rejected that argument, ruling that the original notification issued in 2021 – when the ICC formally opened its investigation into alleged crimes in occupied Palestine – already covered later events.

They said no new notification was required, meaning the arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant remain valid.

The ruling comes as Israel’s assault on Gaza continues to exact a devastating toll. Since a ceasefire took effect on October 11, 2025, at least 391 Palestinians have been killed and 1,063 wounded, and 632 bodies recovered, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

Biffy Clyro’s James Johnston quits UK tour amid ‘mental health and addiction issues’

Biffy Clyro’s James Johnston has announced he’s quitting their UK and European tour but despite the news, the bass player said he did feel there was “light at the end of the tunnel”

Biffy Clyro bass player James Johnston has pulled out of their UK and European tour citing “mental health and addiction issues”.

The 45-year-old posted a statement on the band’s instagram page and other social media platforms explaining his decision. The Scottish band are due to start their tour on 9 January in Belfast and will continue to perform over the summer with dates in Australia and New Zealand.

James wrote: “I am heartbroken to let you know that I will not be joining the band on the upcoming tours. For some time, I have been living with mental health problems which have led to addiction issues that I have kept concealed for a long time.

“This has caused significant problems for myself and everyone around me – the time has come to properly address my illnesses and deal with them.”

He went on to apologise to frontman Simon Neil and his twin brother Ben – the band’s drummer – and thanked them “for their continued love, patience, support and understanding throughout this time”.

He added: “I have recently started to receive the professional help I need and would like to reassure you all that there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

James went on to say their “dear friend” Naomi MacLeod, a session bassist, will step in for the band for the new tour. In response to the Instagram post, there was an outpouring of support from fans.

Biffy Clyro are due to play the biggest show of their career next year which will see them headlining London’s Finsbury Park in July.
