Bruno Fernandes’ replacement, according to Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, is “impossible” because he could lose his captain in a month.
A hamstring issue forced Fernandes to miss Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa, which Amorim claimed at the time would have prevented the Portugal midfielder from playing for Newcastle on Friday (20:00 GMT).
When Fernandes’ absence was discussed with the media on Wednesday, Amorim declined to provide a specific time frame, despite saying it was anticipated to be “not going to take a lot of time.”
It is a significant blow at a time when Fernandes’ obvious replacement, Kobbie Mainoo, is also out with a calf injury and Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo are both away at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Bruno can’t possibly be replaced, said Amorim. I told the team that this morning.
Many people need to step up in response to the statement, “We need to take the good thing, if there is a good thing on that.”
Since leaving Sporting in January 2020, Fernandes has had a remarkable fitness record.
His absence will likely be his longest while playing for the Old Trafford club, even if it is not as bad as his initial concerns about a six-week absence, as he has only missed two games through injury and one more through illness in the past six years.
Amorim remarked, “It is not just the creation.” He is the one in charge of team organization at each set-piece.

I have faith in my players.
Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw were named as Amorim’s senior players who could step up, but Diogo Dalot, Fernandes’ fellow Portugal international, took the captain’s armband at Villa Park.
Mainoo has been a victim of his own misery this season, despite Amorim’s claim that he anticipates the England international to return first.
With only Casemiro returning from a one-game suspension and the exception of Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire still out, Amorim will miss seven senior players against Newcastle.
Academy duo Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey, who both made their senior debuts against Villa, are likely to get more minutes.
After repeatedly squandering opportunities to advance to the top of the Champions League, Amorim must now produce results against a significantly weakened squad against opponents his side should face given that, after Newcastle, their next opponents are Wolves, Leeds, and Burnley, who are all battling relegation.
The former head of sport maintains optimism regarding their chances.
