‘Signing of the season’ – how Xhaka has taken Sunderland to top four

Granit Xhaka, the captain of Sunderland, was given the title of the season before making his most significant contribution so far.

The Black Cats could not have imagined how well it would turn out when they signed the now 33-year-old from Bayer Leverkusen for £13 million in the summer.

Sunderland drew 1-1 at home against Everton, which restored them to the top four of the Premier League, thanks to the midfielder’s effort from outside the box.

A quarter of the way through the season, the promoted side will be able to earn a Champions League spot.

Before the game, ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports, “He must be the signing of the season.”

“Is there anyone in the Premier League who has a significant impact anywhere?” Not surprisingly.”

How significant of an impact has Xhaka had?

In almost every way, Xhaka leads his Sunderland team-mates.

However, how consistently high-ranked he is in every category in terms of statistics is very impressive.

Only three players combined have three assists, with only three (those with four) more. Only two players have created more chances from set-plays than his nine, and he is joint-11th in the department.

Only Marcos Senesi (56) has completed more long passes than Xhaka’s (52) among outfielders.

Senesi’s 138 attempts were offset by 87 long passes by the Swiss.

He leads all other players in passes (552) and balls into the box (566), and his team won (49).

And he now has a goal, his first in the Premier League since 2022-23 when he scored twice against Wolves in his final game against Arsenal.

He’s very significant because this league has a lot of young players and new faces, manager Regis Le Bris said.

They are unaware of the condition, and one player like Granit, who has had a lot of experience, is very significant to us. He has this ability to excel.

“I’m happy to have this player,” she said. He has a passion for football, is competitive, has a strong sense of community, and sets the standard.

Jonny Evans, the former Sunderland defender, stated on Sky Sports, “He is the only player with real experience on the team.”

Better than the “Vicar of Arsenal”?

Xhaka, who has played for Arsenal from 2016 until 2023, is currently in his second year here in England.

In their unbeaten domestic campaign from 2023 to 2024, he then won the title under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.

The Leverkusen boss, Erik ten Hag, resisted selling Xhaka this summer.

Ten Hag was fired a few weeks into the season after the midfielder left for Sunderland.

You never know where you land, said Xhaka, “but I didn’t expect to come back after Germany.”

“It made me happy to be back.” I understood that the project would provide experience for the guys every day.

“I’m happy to score a goal,” I thought.

At Arsenal, Xhaka was a bit of a pantomine villain and occasionally much mocked.

He had a six-week spell as the Gunners’ captain in 2019, clashed with his own fans, and was stripped of his armband. He was also sent off five times for the Gunners.

However, things improved under Mikel Arteta, who eventually left for Germany in 2023.

After going through that at Arsenal, Carragher showed great character and bounced back from that. He will be remembered for a very long time if he can join a Sunderland team that finishes in the top 10 or even just stays up.

Marco Gabbiadini, a former Sunderland striker, described him as “a top professional.”

You sometimes thought he was a bit of a villain when he was a player for Arsenal. We have seen him grow and develop over the years.

“We saw a slightly restrained version of Xhaka,” according to the report from Arsenal, but it’s actually better than the fully committed, blowing steam out of his ears type of player.

He is “a little bit more measured, calmer, and a better professional.” Everyone believes in him, and having him in your squad is a talisman, especially when you have a young squad.

Trump says he will restrict federal funds for New York City if Mamdani wins

If Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the city’s Tuesday mayoral elections, Republican President Donald Trump says he will restrict federal funding for the city.

If Mamdani wins the election, Trump declared on his Truth Social platform on Monday that “it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, aside from the very minimum as required.”

According to polls, Mamdani is running against Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa and former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who is the party’s nominee.

Mamdani held a 45.8% lead over Cuomo, who had a 31.1 percent advantage, and a 28.5-point lead over Sliwa, who had a 17.3 percent lead.

After months of back-and-forth barbs, social media hits, and heated debates, the mayoral candidates raced across New York City’s five boroughs on Monday for the final day of campaign.

Mamdani kicked off the day with a speech at City Hall as the closely-watched election day approached. He led a sunrise walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, flanked by hundreds of supporters.

Cuomo, on the other hand, attacked socialism in the Bronx, visited senior citizens in Chinatown, and allegedly called Mamdani a “poser” off an X-post.

And while speaking at a subway station where a woman was killed last year on a train, Republican candidate Sliwa waved his signature red hat to supporters in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood.

The two candidates’ competing campaigns in New York City reflect their positions in the political landscape: the son of another former governor, deeply rooted in the liberal Democratic political establishment, and the son of a young, under-respected assemblyman who would be the city’s first Muslim, first person born in Africa, and first person of South Asian descent to lead.

The New York City Board of Elections reports that the mayoral race has received a record 735, 317 early votes cast over the past nine days, more than four times the election’s total for 2021.

“This is our time,” the statement read.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old assemblyman from New York, has energized the city’s residents with a multilingual, optimistic campaign that promised free buses, rent freezes, and universal childcare.

In a 60 Minutes interview, he once more stated that Trump had indicated his support for Cuomo. Cuomo has made an appeal to conservatives in recent weeks to raise his polling numbers.

Our city will plunge deeper into the darkness that has made it impossible for working people to lead dignified lives if Cuomo is elected mayor, Mamdani said.

Mamdani appeared to applaud the significant change in New York’s politics in his City Hall speech on Monday.

Few people in this city thought they could win, and what that would mean for a city that has long focused solely on the wealthy and powerful at the expense of those who endure sunrises and sunsets, Mamdani said.

The crowd erupted in celebrations of “Our time is now” moments later!

In his final hours of campaigning, Cuomo, who resigned as governor in 2021 after an independent state investigation revealed he had engaged in a pattern of sexually harassing women, attacked Mamdani’s democratic socialist promises, comparing them to left-wing governments in Latin America.

In Venezuela, “Socialism didn’t work.” In Cuba, socialism failed. In New York City, Cuomo asserted that socialism would not work. However, Maddani has self-described as a “democratic socialist.”

Molly-Mae Hague finally speaks out after backlash over ‘out of touch’ documentary

Molly-Mae Hague revealed she has deleted TikTok after a backlash of negative comments as the second series of her show Behind It All was released on Amazon Prime

Molly-Mae Hague has broken her silence after being slammed for being ‘out of touch’ and ‘bratty’ on her Amazon Prime show Behind It All. The 26-year-old social media influencer and former Love Island star opened up to fans in her latest YouTube vlog.

She started off by telling her two million subscribers it had ‘definitely been an interesting week’ before revealing she had made the ‘executive decision’ to delete her TikTok account.

Explaining why, she said: “To be honest with you, it’s been, quite frankly, one of the best decisions I ever made.” Though she admitted she’d ‘grown thick skin over the years’ and was used to seeing negative comments in her line of work, Molly-Mae continued: “There’s just something about that app that just feels so insanely toxic.”

Since deleting TikTok, Molly-Mae said she had been shielded by most of the backlash but was alarmed when her makeup artist scrolled through it and saw “at least three things within that short time of me looking at her phone that I didn’t want to see”.

She said: “So, I just felt like, okay, definitely, definitely in no way, shape or form rushing to get the app back anytime soon.” Thanking fans for the positive messages she had received after series two of her docu-series started in October, Molly-Mae went on to say: “I just want to say that I’ve also received so many incredibly lovely messages and people saying that they’ve also really enjoyed it. And that’s literally all I wanted for the doc.

“It’s never ever been to do anything other than just create something for people to watch and enjoy. And I think I’ve definitely. definitely learned a lot.”

She then joked: “Do you know what’s really liberating? The fact that I’m not going to see any of this clipped on to TikTok. That is a really liberating feeling. Like, I can say anything in my YouTube videos now and I’m not going to see the clipped bits on TikTok and then all the comments on it.”

Discussing how nervous she was for the documentary to come out, Molly-Mae told fans: “I think even before the premiere, there’s a bit of me in this vlog where I’m like severely anxious. And everything that everyone’s said was stuff that I anticipated. Definitely not all of it – but a lot of it was stuff that I flagged.

“I think people think I don’t know, or think, ‘Oh, she’s not thought about that. No, no. I literally said, ‘That’s going to cause this’ and ‘This is going to make them say this.'”

A social media star before she went on Love Island back in 2019, Molly-Mae said she’d been following a formula when it comes to creating her content for years that ‘avoids what is happening with the doc from happening’. But she said: “With this drop of the doc, we did the complete opposite of what we normally do.”

Explaining why, the influencer – who has a two-year-old daughter, Bambi, with partner Tommy Fury – shared: “We spoke about things we don’t speak about. We kept things in that probably I would never ever show of myself.

“Because with the last drop of the doc, everyone was like, ‘We want more. We want more.’ We want to see real everyday life. We want to see the realness behind it all.

“It’s like you give it, but then it’s too much or it’s, you know. I saw someone saying that they fell asleep halfway through one of the episodes because it was so boring yet they feel like the episodes aren’t long enough.

“So there’s not really – and I’m sure people will probably pick this apart as well – you just really, really can’t keep everyone happy. No matter how much you sit and try and just make something that you think people hopefully will enjoy.”

Going on to say how it makes her feel, Molly-Mae admitted: “I said in the doc that it doesn’t affect me – and it doesn’t affect me to a certain point – but then I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, everyone hates me!’ It’s like, if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry.

“But if you sent me a lovely message and you did enjoy it, I’m so happy. And thank you. That’s all it was ever meant to be, just something for you guys to watch and enjoy. Love you millions.”

What can you read into the Premier League table after 10 games?

Images courtesy of Getty

Each team has played ten games so far in the Premier League season, which is over a quarter of the way through.

What then can we infer about it?

The answer seems to be quite a lot, according to history.

Only two teams finished more than five places off the top of their current standings last year, for instance.

And already there would be at least one title challenger and relegation battler, who would need to do something unheard of.

How Table of the Premier League looks after 10 games

Is history at Arsenal?

On 25 points, Arsenal leads the Premier League, which is roughly the average (24.7%) for the eventual champions after 10 games.

The top team in this league season has won the title in 14 of its 33 matches so far.

However, after ten games, has a team scored the title, a team has only seven times, the tally of second-placed Manchester City, or 18 points.

Nobody has ever attempted it with fewer points, which would “exclude” any other hopefuls.

Arsenal leads City by six points, which is the most points a team has ever scored from behind at this point in a title race.

The two who did that were Manchester City in 2013 and Manchester United in 2002-2003.

This might not be a good thing for the Gunners, though, if you believe in omens.

City scored 19 points and Arsenal scored 25 in the same season. exact same totals as this season.

Are there any prospects for Wolves?

Every time there is a Premier League relegation, Wolves’ two-game winning streak after ten games has meant that.

At this point, four teams, including Wolves last year, have done it from a position of three points.

Under Gary O’Neil, Vitor Pereira assumed control and provided safety. O’Neil and Pereira have just been fired, and Molineux’ advanced discussions have ended.

What about the promoted teams?

The three promoted teams have gone straight back up without much of a fight in each of the previous two seasons.

However, they are far better this year, and they have yet to win any of their ten games.

Fourth place is Sunderland in the table. No promoted team has ever recovered from a 10-game losing streak after accruing 18 points.

Both Leeds (11 points) and Burnley (10) are already in double figures and two places above the relegation zone.

Cardiff in 2013-14 was the last promoted team to earn 11 or more points after 10 games and relegate itself.

What changed during the previous season?

Only two teams finished last season more than five positions short of their 10-game mark.

Tottenham dropped from seventh to 17th place as a result of Ange Postecoglou’s appearance of priority in the Europa League.

Wolves moved up four spots, while Nottingham Forest dropped the same amount, while Newcastle moved six places to fifth, Crystal Palace moved up five, and Wolves moved up four.
