Tottenham and Manchester United both score stoppage-time goals in 2-2 draw

Matthijs de Ligt equalised in the sixth minute of a dramatic period of stoppage time to earn Manchester United a 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

Tottenham looked like claiming all three points on Sunday when Richarlison glanced in a header in the first minute of added-on time, completing a Spurs comeback from a goal down.

There was still time for De Ligt to find space at the back post at a corner to direct a header goalwards and over the line before Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario clawed the ball away.

Trailing to Bryan Mbeumo’s 32nd-minute header, Tottenham dominated the second half and grabbed an equaliser in the 84th through substitute Mathys Tel’s shot that deflected in off De Ligt.

De Ligt said United deserved more from the game than a point.

“I’m proud of the team for how we fought back and got a point in a really difficult stadium,” he said.

“You can see that we still have the fire in our belly to get a goal, to get a point – even with 10 men,” he added, as United played the last few minutes a man down as Benjamin Sesko was forced off injured after United had made all their five substitutions.

However, Tel said he felt Spurs merited all three points.

“We are feeling 50-50, we conceded a goal, but our reaction in the second half was top,” Tel said.

“We changed the game, but we are mad because we have to win today. The subs brought energy to change the game, and we showed great mentality; we deserved to win.”

United extended their unbeaten run in the league to five games – three wins followed by two draws – while Tottenham have only won one of its six homes games so far.

However, the Red Devils have now failed to beat Spurs in their previous eight meetings, but it was the most recent of which that will live long in the memory of the Tottenham support.

Spurs ended their 17-year trophy drought thanks to a scrappy 1-0 win in the Europa League final in May, which also took them into the Champions League while United missed out on European football altogether.

Despite the huge blow to the United’s finances and prestige, Ruben Amorim is making the most of having more time on the training field to finally build some momentum after a tough first year at Old Trafford.

Unlike most of United’s big money signings in recent years, Bryan Mbeumo has proved his worth since a £65 million ($86m) move from Brentford in July.

The Cameroonian was named Premier League player of the month for October and took his tally to four goals in as many games when he headed in from Amad Diallo’s cross on 32 minutes.

Spurs were booed off after a woeful attacking display in losing a London derby 1-0 to Chelsea last weekend.

After another dreary first 45 minutes, the hosts came to life early in the second period.

Senne Lammens produced a brilliant stop to turn Cristian Romero’s flick behind.

The Belgian goalkeeper was quickly called into action again to parry Joao Palhinha’s effort.

Brennan Johnston, who scored the winner when the sides last met in Bilbao, was then denied an equaliser by the offside flag.

Tottenham’s burst of attacking threat quickly fizzled out, though, and discontent among the home fans with manager Thomas Frank showed when his decision to replace Xavi Simons was roundly booed.

However, the Spurs boss can claim his changes turned the game around.

Destiny Udogie crossed for fellow substitute Tel to turn and fire into the top corner via a deflection off De Ligt.

Wilson Odobert, introduced off the bench at half-time, then curled a shot towards the far corner that Richarlison flicked in to leave Lammens helpless.

The Brazilian tore off his shirt and was reduced to tears in his celebration.

Yet, it still was not enough to earn Tottenham a first home league win since the opening weekend of the season.

De Ligt was offered too much space at the back post from Bruno Fernandes’ corner and his header was too powerful for Vicario.

Tommy Fleetwood fired two birdies in the final three holes to move one shot behind fellow Englishman Aaron Rai, who leads the Abu Dhabi Championship going into Sunday’s final round.

Rai, a winner of the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship last year, had seven birdies in a six-under-par round of 66 at the Yas Links, his only dropped shot coming on the penultimate hole as he reached 20 under par for the tournament.

Fleetwood missed a number of birdie putts during his third round but picked up shots at 16 and 18 to go with a birdie and eagle on the front nine as he signed for a bogey-free 67.

Fleetwood has been highly impressive over the past few months, winning his maiden PGA title at the Tour Championship in August before helping Europe beat the United States in the Ryder Cup in September.

Last month, the world number five claimed a first DP World Tour title of the season in India.

“I am playing very good golf at the moment and I have found myself in this position a lot throughout the summer, but I never take it for granted,” Fleetwood told the DP World Tour website.

“This is what you practise for, these are the times of our lives and I am enjoying it very much.”

Spain’s Nacho Elvira, who posted a 65, is two shots off the lead, while Englishman Andy Sullivan and New Zealander Daniel Hillier are tied for fourth on 17 under.

Rory McIlroy finished the day six shots off the pace following his round of 66, which kept him in pole position to win a seventh Race to Dubai title as the season’s best golfer on the DP World Tour.

The Abu Dhabi Championship is the first of two DP World Tour end-of-season play-off events, with the top 70 players competing this week and the leading 50 advancing to next week’s finale in Dubai.

With a total of 9,000 points to be shared among the field this week (1,500 to the winner) and 12,000 more next week (2,000 to the winner), the Harry Vardon Trophy for the season title is up for grabs.

Northern Irishman McIlroy, who is two behind Colin Montgomerie’s record of eight years as the tour’s number one, leads the Race to Dubai standings by just under 500 points from Marco Penge, the Englishman who has won three times on tour this year.

Penge sits on 11 under for this week’s tournament after his 70 on Saturday, finishing with a damaging double bogey after finding water on the par-five 18th.

Six-try Ireland eventually power past Japan

Autumn Nations Series

Ireland (17) 41

Tries: Crowley, Timoney, Porter, G McCarthy, P McCarthy, O’Brien Cons: Crowley 2, Prendergast 2 Pens: Crowley

Japan (10) 10

Ireland outlasted a tenacious Japan side to win 41-10 in a largely underwhelming autumn Test in Dublin.

After last week’s loss to New Zealand, the victory represents a first win of the autumn for Ireland and, after his British and Irish Lions sabbatical, a first with Andy Farrell at the helm since November 2024.

It did, however, come courtesy of a far from convincing first-half performance with Ireland scoring three tries in the final 13 minutes to put a gloss on the scoreline.

While tries from Jack Crowley and Nick Timoney, as well as seven points from the boot of the former, had the hosts in a 17-0 lead after half an hour, Japan played had plenty of enterprising rugby and were rewarded by Kenji Sato’s score three minutes before the break.

Eddie Jones’ visitors could not exert the same influence on the second half, failing to score in the second period and tries from front row forwards Andrew Porter, Gus McCarthy and Paddy McCarthy, as well as wing Tommy O’Brien, saw Ireland pull away in the second half.

Returning to Aviva Stadium for the first time since a comprehensive Six Nations defeat by France in March, Ireland did not initially get the response they hoped after last weekend’s loss at the hands of the All Blacks in Chicago.

Head coach Farrell made eight changes to his starting side but, as has often been the theme for his rotated sides in past Novembers, there was a distinct lack of rhythm in attack.

The early kick-off and a rare less-than-capacity crowd certainly gave a low-key feel but, after Japan dug themselves out of a 17-0 deficit to trail just 17-10 at half-time, there was no doubt that Ireland were in a genuine battle.

The visitors – who famously beat Ireland at their own World Cup in 2019 – arrived in Dublin off the back of a 61-7 drubbing at the hands of South Africa in Wembley last week but this did not have the same one-sided feel until the closing minutes.

Against New Zealand, Ireland’s set-piece struggled which in turn denied the side attacking opportunities through a game in which they managed just one try.

That their first line-out of the day was overthrown and resulted in a turnover did not hint at much of an improvement.

Even still, after the Irish pack made a considerably more encouraging start at the scrum, it was a surprise to see the hosts opt to kick for the posts after five minutes rather than trust their work out of touch to set up a maul.

Japan saw plenty of ball in the early stages – as evidenced by the necessity for O’Brien to make a pair of breakdown turnovers in the opening quarter of an hour – but their momentum was stalled by centre Charlie Lawrence’s yellow card for a dangerous tackle in the 17th minute.

Tries through Crowley and Timoney either side of Lawrence’s return would have been expected to settle what had been a nervy beginning, but Ireland’s response to their 17-0 was a poor one.

Ireland show superiority in second half

Jack Crowley dives over for a tryGetty Images

In the final passage of the first half, Ireland’s Jacob Stockdale was shown a yellow card with his side left to face the first 10 minutes after the restart a man light.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Ireland secured the first points of the second half when, after a much more purposeful passage of play, Andrew Porter barged over from close range.

The 12-point lead, and the return of Stockdale from the sin-bin, was the call for Farrell to go to his bench for the first time with brothers Sam and Cian Prendergast, as well as Jack Conan, entering the game.

After a disappointing impact from last week’s replacements, Ireland at least had the better of the final quarter here.

Hooker Gus McCarthy, on in place of Ronan Keller, finished off a maul score to make the game safe with 13 minutes remaining, while his fellow replacement and namesake Paddy McCarthy followed him across the whitewash five minutes later.

There was still time for Tommy O’Brien to score a counter-attacking try to round out the scoring in the closing moments with the final flurry giving the impression of a much more convincing victory.

A year ago, the disappointment of defeat by New Zealand to start the autumn felt as if it bleed across the next three weekends despite Irish wins over Argentina, Fiji and Australia.

This was not an 80 minutes to dispel the notion that history could repeat itself.

Shona McGarty shares cryptic post after split as she prepares for I’m A Celeb

Former EastEnders actress Shona McGarty is heading to Australia to take part in this year’s I’m A Celeb but took time to share an emotive post before she jets off

Former EastEnders star Shona McGarty has shared a cryptic post on social media ahead of her stint in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! The actress recently split from her fiancé David Bracken and appears to be doing some reflecting on life before she jets out to Australia.

Shona, 34, posted a black and white video to her Instagram where she is seen applying her make-up while giving an emotive silent performance and removing the makeup again before the clip turns to colour. Shona shared a long caption alongside the clip, with lyrics from her new song Unapologetically Me.

She wrote, “I’m finally learning to just be me, no filters, no apologies, no shrinking to make others comfortable. It’s a new beginning, and this time I’m stepping into life with open arms and an open heart. I’ve spent too long second-guessing, dimming my light, trying to fit into spaces that were never meant for me.

“But now, it’s about freedom, being comfortable in my own skin, owning my story, singing LOUD, with all my flaws, and my fire. This is the start of really living, fully and authentically. From here on out, …I’m .. ‘unapologetically me’.”

Shona is one of the stars who is rumoured to be heading to Australia for I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here’s upcoming series.

Shona – who is best known for her portrayal of Whitney Dean on the BBC soap – reportedly split from David after a year-long engagement. The pair got engaged in the summer of 2024 but have now apparently called off their engagement.

A source told The Sun, “They are on amicable terms, but have ended their romantic relationship. There are no hard feelings, they realised they wanted different things and are better off as friends. Shona is now focusing on her music and career.”

The pair met on TikTok just over two years ago and David, who is best known as a member of Blessed, popped the question during a romantic picnic in that took place in Kensington, West London. Although, at the time, things almost went awry when the police turned up.

At the time, David said: “I went over to the police, who said, ‘Sorry we are just closing up the park’. I said, ‘Would you mind giving me five minutes as I am about to propose to my partner?’

“He looked at his watch and said, ‘Of course, and best of luck!” So, I told Shona to go stand at the waterfall in the park. I then put on our favourite song and had a dance with her before getting down on one knee.”

Shona then noted that she was none the wiser about how David’s proposal was almost scuppered at the last minute. She said: “David went over to speak to them and I had no idea what he said because I was just eating cheese and crackers.”

In an exclusive joint interview with OK! announcing their engagement, Shona and David said that the location of the proposal made it even more special.

David had picked a tranquil corner of the park called Kyoto Garden – somewhere that means a lot to Shona.

She explained: “I love Japanese culture and the spirituality of it. He brought a picnic which was really sweet. It was lovely, I was in my element but I didn’t think he was going to propose at all.”

Soludo Alleges Plot To Rig Election Results In Anambra Poll

The incumbent Governor of Anambra State and Candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has hinted at an alleged plan to rig the ongoing gubernatorial election in the state.

He alleged while casting his vote on Saturday at Polling Unit 002, Umuezeadigo Street in Isuofia, Aguata LGA.

Although the APGA candidate did not mention the name of the party involved, the APGA candidate said the plotters plan to “swap election results”.

“The only thing we hear that is actually a concern, and we hope won’t happen, is that one party (he laughs) has written results to swap during the collation process.

“We hear they have even had meetings with INEC not to upload the results so that they can have the opportunity to manipulate the results.”

He, however, said he was confident in the electoral system to deliver a free and fair election process.

“But we have confidence that the system will sort it all out.

“Our people are vigilant, organised and united. We will follow the process from the polling unit to collation at the ward, and from the ward to local governments and to the state.

“Once the system works, we do not doubt that we are gonna win the 21 local governments”, he said.

The 16 candidates contesting the election are Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA); Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC); Sir Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP); Mr John Nwosu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC); Dr George Moghalu of the Labour Party (LP); Oti Echezona of Allied People’s Movement (APM); and Chief Jeff Nweke of Action Alliance (AA).

Others are Charles Onyeze of Accord; Geoffrey Onyejegbu of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP); Jude Ezenwafor of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP; Chukwududem Nweke of Action Peoples Party (APP); Jerry Okeke of Boot Party (BP); Martin Ugwoji of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP); and Vincent Chukwurah of Social Democratic Party (SDP). The two female candidates are Ms. Chioma Ifemeludike of AAC and Ndidi Olieh of National Rescue Movement (NRM).

There are also six female deputy governorship candidates— Appolonia Ezeadili (Accord), Senator Uche Ekwunife (APC), Ebele Okeke (APP), Happiness Ugboma (BP), Veronica Okaro (LP), and Faith Obi (ZLP).

According to INEC, 2,802,790 registered voters are expected to vote across 5,718 polling units in the state’s 21 local government areas.
