The families forced to pay ransoms to free loved ones in Sudan’s el-Fasher

When Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) stormed the besieged city of el-Fasher on October 26, Mabrooka’s husband and brother ran for their lives.

The plan was for them to head to Tawila – about 60 kilometres (37 miles) away – where Mabrooka would be waiting for them with her three small children. By sundown, they had still not arrived.

News spread that the RSF, which has been fighting a bitter war against the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) since April 2023, was carrying out summary executions against the population of el-Fasher, which it accused of siding with its enemy. Mabrooka began fearing the worst.

Then, her phone rang.

A voice told Mabrooka to wire 14,000 Sudanese pounds ($23) – a hefty sum for displaced and destitute Sudanese families – to a bank account, which she suspected belonged to an RSF fighter.

“When I got the call, I was terrified and crying the whole time,” Mabrooka, 27, told Al Jazeera. “I knew they would for sure torture and kill them if I didn’t muster up the money.”

Kidnapping and ransom

Since the RSF captured the army’s last stronghold in the sprawling western region of Darfur, the group has carried out a series of atrocities, including execution, rape and mass looting, according to survivors and local monitors. The Sudan Doctors Network put the death toll from the RSF attack at 1,500 in the first few days after the city’s fall, but the true number could be far higher.

While acknowledging that some crimes have been committed by its forces, the RSF has largely denied some of the worst accusations against it, and insists that it is “liberating” territory.

But in el-Fasher, most of the victims have been from the mainly sedentary “non-Arab” population, who have lived in fear of the nomadic “Arab” fighters who comprise most of the RSF.

The targeted ethnic violence has forced tens of thousands of people to flee to neighbouring villages, but many people have been abducted for ransom by RSF fighters along the way.

According to local monitors, international non-government organisations, and victims’ families, it’s likely that thousands of people have desperately wired money straight to RSF fighters to national banks via banking applications.

Monitors told Al Jazeera that ransoms range from anywhere between $20 to $20,000.

“There is a large number among the displaced people who have been detained, and the RSF is asking for a really big amount from their families,” said Mohamed*, a local relief worker in Tawila with the Emergency Response Room (ERR), a grassroots initiative spearheading the aid response across Sudan.

Mathilde Vu, the Sudan advocacy manager for the Norwegian Refugee Council, told Al Jazeera that many civilians are reportedly being detained as they flee and asked to pay a “transportation fee” to reach Tawila.

Many children have been separated from their parents, as well as women and children from their husbands, she said.

In addition, the United Nations estimates that more than 70,000 people have been uprooted from el-Fasher since October 26 and that over 40,000 of them headed towards Tawila.

Of this number, Vu noted that only about 6,000 people have arrived in Tawila so far.

“This is a clear indicator that people are disappearing or are being held back,” she told Al Jazeera.

Ransom videos

Some families who lost touch with loved ones in el-Fasher received ransom videos from unidentified kidnappers.

Local monitors and global relief agencies, who asked to remain anonymous to protect their teams on the ground, said that RSF fighters appear to be the kidnappers in most cases.

However, criminal gangs and other “Arab” militias aligned with the RSF may also be implicated.

One video circulating over social media, which has been authenticated by Al Jazeera’s verification team, Sanad, showed a man being held for ransom.

In the video, Abbas al-Sadiq, who is a psychology professor at el-Fasher University, pleaded for one of his colleagues to pay a ransom that amounts to roughly $3,330.

“Please wire the money to the [account] number I sent you and please do it now because we don’t have a lot of time. They are just giving me 10 minutes,” said al-Sadiq in the video.

Noon Baramaki, a journalist from el-Fasher, told Al Jazeera that al-Sadiq was released on Saturday after his ransom was paid. A colleague of al-Sadiq also reported on social media that al-Sadiq has been released, but Al Jazeera has been unable to reach him.

Baramki stressed that countless other people have been abducted, yet their families are scared to speak to the press out of fear that the RSF will somehow find out and then kill their loved ones.

“People are really scared to make any statements because they don’t want to be the reason that anyone they love gets hurt or killed,” Baramki told Al Jazeera.

Reunited

A number of news reports have documented that the RSF and allied gangs are executing people who can’t pay the ransoms that have been demanded.

For most families in el-Fasher – who for 18 months were living under a brutal RSF siege that led to a famine – paying a ransom that is thousands or even hundreds of dollars is extremely difficult if not impossible.

Mabrooka, whose husband and brother were abducted, considers herself lucky. She said that she relied on donations from friends and family members in Tawila in order to promptly gather 12,000 Sudanese pounds ($20), which the kidnappers accepted.

Once the money was wired, her brother and husband were released on November 1. They managed to make it to Tawila despite limping and staggering from the exhaustion and beatings they endured in captivity, as well as from the lack of food and water they were given.

“When they finally arrived in Tawila, I cried and cried and cried tears of joy. I remember hugging them and greeting them,” Mabrooka told Al Jazeera. “Thank God they made it.”

While she is now reunited with her husband and brother, she said they are still living in fear.

The family believes that the RSF could soon attack Tawila next to continue to persecute non-Arabs and finish off what many relief agencies, monitors and experts are describing as a possible genocide.

“Honestly, we are terrified that after the RSF finishes off el-Fasher, they’ll come after us here,” Mabrooka said.

“We are scared,” she told Al Jazeera. “Thank God [my husband and brother] returned, but people here are still scared.”

Hollyoaks star pays tribute to Emmerdale actor boyfriend who changed her life

Nikki Sanderson, a former Hollyoaks star, has revealed the positive effects her life has had had on her relationship with Anthony Quinlan.

Nikki Sanderson, the star of Hollyoaks, has praised her “fabulous” boyfriend for boosting her self-assurance as she poses in a bikini for the first time in 20 years.

The actress, 41, is famed for playing Maxine Minniver on the Channel 4 show from 2012 and featured in some major storylines, including domestic violence and miscarrying a baby.

In April 2025, Maxine departed the village in a taxi after making plans to escape the country alongside her daughter, Minnie.

Away from the small screen, Nikki is dating former Emmerdale star Anthony Quinlan, who played Peter Barton on the ITV soap between 2013 and 2020.

According to reports, the pair reportedly began to straddle each other in 2021, and it seems like they are on the verge of a strong relationship.

Speaking to Closer Magazine, Nikki paid a loving tribute to Anthony, crediting him for boosting her confidence and passion for fitness as she posed in a bikini.

She cited Anthony’s positive influence as evidenced by his dedication to nutrition and health, and how he has taught her a lot about strength training.

In her words, “Keeping fit was never really a priority in my twenties or thirties; now I’m training three times a week and can’t get enough of walking.”

Physically and mentally, it is “so underappreciated.” Even if it means circling my home to get the last 10,000 steps in, I aim for 10,000. The fact that my partner is very fit, of course, helps.

Anthony and Nikki have two careers, one of which is acting, Boxed Off, and Boxed Off, which he has developed with her to help her “get in the best shape.”

She continued, “Anthony really boosts my confidence and strengthens me in every way.”

We are incredibly happy, complement each other, make a good team, and like him, marvel. He simply makes me feel happy, secure, and loved.

‘Bundle Of Integrity, Incorruptibility,’ Obasanjo Mourns Ex-CoS Adangba

When the country’s history of unity, democracy, and good governance is written, former president Olusegun Obasanjo referred to his late Major General Abdullahi (Adangba) Muhammed as a patriotic Nigerian whose name is unmissable.

Read more about Tinubu’s memorial to the late chief of staff and NSA General Adangba.

Umaru Musa Yar’adua and Muhammed Musa Yar’adua served as Obasanjo’s Chief of Staff between 2007 and 2008, respectively.

Obasanjo was cited by Kehinde Akinyemi, the Special Assistant to the former president for media, in a statement on Wednesday as saying that the passing of the late Chief of Staff had come to him unexpectedly and with great shock.

The unexpected and unfortunate passing of a close friend, brother, and coworker, he said, is a great trial for humanity’s best, he said.

The late Maj-Gen. Abdul Mohammed was a diligent and conscientious soldier who distinguished himself in both the military and the public eye and served his country with patriotic zeal, according to Obasanjo in a tribute to journalists.

One of the few people I know who could be described as having both integrity and incorruptibility.

“He made a tremendous impression as the military governor of the old Benue-Plateau State from 1975 to 1976 under General Murtala Mohammed’s military regime, showing unwavering commitment to his work, loyalty to his fatherland, and impeccable leadership.

He received a number of training, including becoming one of the first military officers to receive training in being a member of the intelligence service.

Rare Courage

After the coup that killed General Muritala Muhammed, the late CoS brought his knowledge and expertise to the formation of the National Security Organization (NSO), now known as the Department of State Services.

Obasanjo continued, “It is also noteworthy that I had to persuade General Abdulsalami Abubakar to become the head of state in his regime between 1998 and 1999.

He will undoubtedly be remembered for his extraordinary courage and leadership in the development of the Nigerian Army, a position he held for the next few years.

I couldn’t find a better person than Maj-Gen. Abdulahi Mohammed, because I made the decision to have a Chief of Staff with military background as part of the gradual transition from the military to democracy and to give the military the impression that they could have access to the highest level of government.

Great Nationalist

He also referred to Muhammad as a great nationalist who had unwavering commitment and dedication to serving Nigeria.

He fought tirelessly for the common good of this nation while remaining committed to the ideal of a prosperous Nigeria where justice and fairness will rule.

It is no exaggeration to say that he played a patriotic, selfless, visionary, and heroic role in our struggle for national unity, democracy, and good governance, and that this is not the case with him.

“On behalf of my family and on my own behalf, I express my condolences to Maj-Gen. Abdul Mohammed’s entire family for his tragic passing. May Jannatul Firdausi be granted to him and Allah (SWT) forgive him. Ameen”.

Deliverance ‘banjo kid’ unrecognisable after ‘struggling to make ends meet’ 50 years on

Billy Redden, with his distinctive haunted expression, became one of the most recognisable faces in Hollywood after starring in 1972 movie Deliverance, but his life went in a different direction

At 15, Billy Redden might have expected a career on the silver screen after appearing in Oscar-nominated movie Deliverance.

But despite being one of the most unmistakable faces in Hollywood for a brief period in the 1970s, his life went in a wholly different direction, a far cry from the bright lights of Tinsel Town.

Now 69, he’s unrecognisable after “struggling really hard to make ends meet”.

Deliverance, a disturbing thriller directed by Brit John Boorman, was a smash hit when it came out in 1972. It was nominated for three Oscars – Best Picture, Best Director and Best Editing.

Young Billy’s appearance in the film was brief, but arguably the most memorable.

He was hand-picked by Boorman, who was scouting local schoolchildren in Georgia, US, for the iconic Duelling Banjos scene. He wasn’t a trained actor nor could he play the banjo, but Boorman thought his haunted expression made him perfect for the role.

A musician hid behind him to create the illusion, but Billy’s awkward stare made him a movie star overnight. In the film, he played “backwoods mountain boy” Lonnie, who gets into a musical duel with a businessman on a canoe trip.

Deliverance raked in millions and became a timeless classic, but Billy saw little of the profits. Paid only a modest fee for his work, he returned to small-town life once the cameras stopped rolling.

Initially, he tried to capitalise on the fame and organised tourist trips down the Chattooga River, which was featured in the film. He later worked a string of jobs, including store associate at Walmart, dishwasher and cafe hand.

Billy also appeared in “banjo man” in a number of other movies, including Outrage: Born in Terror, Blue Collar TV, and Blastfighter, a 2003 motion picture.

Billy discussed his financial difficulties in the 2012 documentary, The Deliverance of Rabun County.

He stated to the producers, “I’d like to receive all the money I believed I’d make from this movie.” I wouldn’t currently be employed by Walmart. And I’m having a lot of trouble making ends meet.

He continued, “We’re not a bad people up here; we’re a loving people,” and defended the county’s reputation. A decent town is located in Rabun County. There isn’t much crime happening, and it’s actually peaceful. Basically, everyone and everyone get along.

Close friend Kip Ramey claims Billy has “mounting medical bills” and lacks social security support and has since retired for several years.

In 2023, he started a GoFundMe page to support the Hollywood legend and raised tens of thousands of dollars, the Spokesman.com reported.

Van Dijk Tells Liverpool To Keep Calm, Follow Arsenal’s Lead

After overcoming Real Madrid 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said the English champions must rebuild from the bottom.

Before a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday, Liverpool had lost six of their previous seven games and gone ten games without recording a win.

As goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois prevented an embarrassing score for the 15-time European champions, Madrid arrived in Merseyside in free-scoring form with very few opportunities.

“We won twice in a row, so it’s simple to say now.” You must remain composed and observe the world from a different angle, according to Van Dijk.

“We all understand how football works; it can change over the course of a week.”

At the top of the Premier League, Arsenal leads Liverpool by seven points, and they have also won their first four Champions League games on a run of eight straight clean sheets.

Van Dijk and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, who has scored 26 goals for club and nation this season, will face off in a huge test of their title defense on Sunday.

“As you can see, Arsenal are flying right now, and it’s down to keeping clean sheets and not conceding chances,” Van Dijk continued.

“We have the ability to hurt anyone on the break,” according to the defending. You witnessed the diligent work today.

We must continue, they say. Another challenging day is on the horizon.

Following the UEFA Champions League, league phase football match between Liverpool and Real Madrid at Anfield in Liverpool, north-west England, on November 4, 2025, Dutch manager Arne Slot (R) congratulates Liverpool’s Northern Irish defender #12 Conor Bradley (L). AFP/PAUL ELLIS photo

Arne Slot, manager of Liverpool, made an important point about a return to Anfield in light of the club’s recent upturn in fortunes.

Only two of the Reds’ six losses this season were at home, including one when Slot faced a changeless Crystal Palace side in the League Cup match last week.

In my opinion, playing in front of these fans and in front of Real Madrid is beneficial because it encourages both my players and our supporters, Slot said.

“A fantastic performance against a team that only lost once all season.” Maybe there could have been a little more. “

As a late substitute for Madrid, Trent Alexander-Arnold received a hostile reception upon his return to Anfield.

After claiming seven major awards while playing for his hometown club, the England international was once a hero among the Liverpool faithful.

In a shaky start to the season, Conor Bradley struggled to find his rightful place in Alexander-Arnold’s place.

Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate kept Kylian Mbappe quiet, but the Northern Irishman excelled in halting Vinicius Junior’s threat.

I mentioned before the game that Mbappe and Vinicius have each contributed 24 goals (goals or assists), and that Slot has also added.

You must ensure that these two are not on the scoresheet if you want to win this game.

Conor was outstanding. Not everyone wants to compete with Vinicius one against one. He excelled today.
