First Metro Bank one-day international, Headingley

England 131 (24.3 overs): Smith 54 (48); Maharaj 4-22

South Africa 137-3 (20.5 overs): Markram 86 (55); Rashid 3-26

South Africa won by seven wickets

England were bundled out for just 131 and thrashed by seven wickets in the first one-day international at Headingley as South Africa handed out a bruising reality check to the hosts’ new era of white-ball cricket under captain Harry Brook.

In an abject performance, England reached 82-2 only to be dismissed in 24.3 overs in their first white-ball matches since Brook began his tenure by sweeping aside West Indies at the start of the summer.

The collapse started when the captain was run out for 12 and opener Jamie Smith, the only batter to make more than 15, followed for a 48-ball 54.

Jacob Bethell’s tough summer continued, Will Jacks, one of five players who were playing in the Hundred final less than 48 hours ago, chipped back a catch and Jos Buttler struggled for 15 from 24 balls.

The last seven wickets fell for 29 runs in 7.1 overs as spinner Keshav Maharaj took 4-22 on a pitch that did not turn and seamer Wiaan Mulder 3-33.

Fast bowler Sonny Baker was then hit for 76 runs, including 14 boundaries, in a brutal, seven-over introduction to international cricket – the most expensive figures by an England bowler on ODI debut.

In the second over, Jofra Archer nicked off Ryan Rickelton only for the ball to be judged to have bounced before first slip and still would have had the left-hander lbw had England reviewed an lbw shout. Their failure to do so summed up their day.

Aiden Markram flogged 86 in 55 balls with England failing to make a breakthrough until he was spectacularly caught by Smith with the winning line only 11 runs away.

The crowd cheered ironically when Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs followed with the scores level but Rickelton ended 31 not out and the Proteas won with a massive 29.1 overs to spare.

Baker flogged as Brook’s England thrashed

England have been battling a downward spiral with their white-ball teams since their failed 2023 World Cup defence in India.

Brook’s winning start – wins in three ODIs and three T20s against the Windies – was supposed to be the start of an upturn.

This performance was as bad as anything that has come in the previous two years.

Because of The Hundred, the players preparation has been non-existent.

Rather than falling in a flurry of expansive strokes, they lacked any sort of batting rhythm and a meek procession against canny yet unspectacular bowling followed.

The batting left Baker, who was last man out for a golden duck, on a hiding to nothing. Three boundaries came in his first over and his opening four-over spell cost 56 as he was thrashed to all parts by Markram, who made his lively pace look gentle with effortless, classical hitting.

While Baker ran in admirably when he returned for a further three overs, he still conceded a further 20 and took his wide tally of wides to four.

Rusty England batters exposed

England’s batting struggles in 50-over cricket are not new.

Where previously they have struggled to find the tempo, most alarming here was the inability to halt their slide.

Ben Duckett nicked off in the third over, after which Joe Root flickered before being caught one-handed by wicketkeeper Rickelton low to his right.

Smith capitalised when South Africa bowled too full or offered width but was involved in the Brook run-out when he sent back his captain who was looking for two.

A chipped six over long-on was Buttler’s only boundary in a 24-ball 15 – the most obviously rusty innings.

South Africa’s fielding, meanwhile, was superb.

Markram took a sharp chance at slip off the wily Maharaj as Bethell departed for one to follow scores of six and five in the fifth Test against India in a summer in which he has barely played.

‘It’s a bad day and we must move on’ – what they said

England captain Harry Brook: “Not ideal and not a great start to the series but it’s just one of those bad days and we have to move on as quickly as possible.

“Everybody will hold their hands up and say they’ve had a bad day, apart from Jamie Smith – he batted really nicely. But it’s just one those days, we couldn’t get a partnership together.

“The ball held in the pitch a bit more than usual but I don’t want to go into too much detail, it’s a bad day and we’ve got to move on.”

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma: “We were clinical with the ball. Even though they managed to put us under a bit of pressure in the powerplay, we still managed to take wickets. Then in the middle, the guys came in, Kesh [Maharaj] showing his class.

“With the ball, I don’t think you can fault much. With the bat, we could have been more clinical at the end but I don’t think it takes anything away from how we went about the chase, led by Aiden Markram at the top really taking the attack to them.”

Ex-England captain Michael Vaughan, speaking to Test Match Special: “Brendon McCullum is a quality manager and he will manage this situation well. He will give some strong words and some things that the players do not want to hear but we are not in the era where teacups are thrown.

Kevin Costner’s new girlfriend revealed as billionaire’s ex 24 years younger than him

Kevin Costner, an actor from Yellowstone, is reportedly seeing a new woman after going through a difficult divorce with Christine Beumgarter last year.

Kevin Costner, 70, has found love again with a stunning sporty woman, 24 years younger than him. The Yellowstone actor believes the beauty is “just his type” following his divorce last year.

He finalised the divorce from wife Christine Baumgarter, 51, in February 2024 following a bitter legal battle. They married back in 2004 and welcomed three children together.

However, Christine filed for divorce in 2023 citing irreconcilable differences. Now, Kevin is reportedly loved up with Kelly Noonan Gores, 46. She has a keen interest in watersports, having taken up paddle boarding, surfing and wakeboarding. The 5ft7in blonde bombshell regularly shares snaps in bikinis as she soaps up Lake Michigan and Malibu.

Kelly frequently exercises at sea or in lakes, and she once said, “Water is my medicine.” She is said to have sparked romance rumors with Kevin last week and has two young children of her own.

They both headed to the JAS Labor Day Experience festival in Snowmass Village near Aspen. “Kevin is dating and happy again after a very dark time in his life,” a source told the Daily Mail.

He has seen Kelly, he claims. In Aspen in late July, they were together. Because he doesn’t want this to go off the rails, he has made an effort to keep it very hush hush.

They added: “She is exactly his type and they have a lot in common: the outdoors, sports — she likes to surf — long walks with dogs.” Kelly has also gone through the pains of divorce as she was previously married to billionaire Alec Gores, 72, from 2016 to 2024.

On her January podcast, Heal With Kelly, she openly discussed the breakup. It pained me,” she said. Both of us wanted this, and she said it was heartbreaking, even though I had the conversation in the beginning.

Kelly continued, “This is not for lack of love,” and added that it was her “hardest year.” I have a lot of respect for this man and he is deeply, deeply, and incredibly loved.

I’m so appreciative of everything I’ve learned, everything he’s taught me, and everything we’ve accomplished together. He was undoubtedly my best friend.

Kevin expressed his desire to meet someone new after his own divorce. Love helps and doesn’t hinder it for someone who wants to be loved and feels like they are at their very best, he told Fox News.

According to multiple sources speaking to Us Weekly, Kevin and Kelly are “hanging out casually and were connected by friends.” They say the relationship is “not serious yet,” and that Kevin and Kelly have recently “spent time” together in Colorado.

They both have mutual friend groups and frequent Aspen frequently. According to one source, they have been interacting casually and getting to know one another.

Kevin agreed to share joint custody of his children with ex Christine following their divorce, and he was ordered to pay over $63,000 a month in child support. Christine is now engaged to their former neighbor, Josh Connor.

Kraft Heinz to split into two companies as financial struggles mount

Kraft Heinz is set to split into two different companies, one focused on groceries and the other on sauces and spreads.

The food manufacturing giant announced the breakup on Tuesday after it never achieved the growth expected when it was formed a decade ago.

The spinoff, which is expected to close in the second half of 2026, is the latest in a series of rearrangements among major global consumer brands that once embraced the conglomerate model, but are now rethinking their business structure amid sluggish sales, depressed valuations, and tariffs.

One of the companies, currently called Global Taste Elevation Co, will include brands such as Heinz, Philadelphia cream cheese and Kraft Mac &amp, Cheese, the Kraft Heinz Company said.

The other, currently called North American Grocery Co, will include legacy brands like Maxwell House, Oscar Mayer, Kraft Singles and Lunchables. The official names of the two companies have not been released yet.

Wall Street had anticipated the breakup after the company said in May that it would look for opportunities to boost shareholder value. As of 11am in New York (15: 00 GMT), the stock is down more than 5 percent.

The 2015 merger that Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway helped engineer alongside Brazilian private equity firm 3G Capital created a $45bn company, with a goal of cutting costs and boosting growth in iconic brands such as Heinz Beanz, Jell-O and Philadelphia cream cheese. Instead, shares have lost about 60 percent of their value in that time as consumers reined in spending, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, Kraft Heinz sold both its Planters nut business and its natural cheese business, vowing to reinvest the money into higher-growth brands like P3 protein snacks and Lunchables. But the company continued to struggle, and Kraft Heinz’s net sales fell 3 percent in 2024.

“For investors, the move could unlock value in the near-term, but the execution risks are clear: unless both entities invest in innovation and defend against private-label encroachment, the breakup may not achieve more than a temporary financial lift”, eMarketer analyst Suzy Davidkhanian said.

The grocery unit will be headed by Kraft Heinz’s current top boss Carlos Abrams-Rivera, while the company seeks potential CEO candidates for the sauces unit.

The company expects the split to cost up to $300m, but anticipates reducing much of that expense quickly.

Ted Lasso icons Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham were spotted back in Richmond as they filmed the new series of the iconic Apple TV+ programme. The scenes in England comes several weeks after the cast and crew kicked off filming for the fan-favourite series in the USA.

Brendan Hunt and Brett Goldstein were seen spotting Jason, who plays loveable Ted, and Hannah, who plays Rebecca Welton, in Scott’s, a hotspot in south-west London. In the restaurant where she was filming, Hannah looked sensational in a form-fitting blue dress.

She had a massive dry robe hidden between her robes in online photos. While Jason, a co-star, was filming in Kingston while sporting the legendary Ted Lasso moustache.

Ted will lead a second division women’s team in the fourth season of the series, which will debut in the summer of next year. Faye Marsay from Adolescence and Tanya Reynolds from Sex Education make up the new cast. The series also includes Aisling Sharkey, Grant Feely, Rex Hayes, Jude Mack, and Abbie Hern.

The last series aired in 2023, but rumours of the streaming success returning for series four hit the headlines last year – with Deadline reporting that Warner Bros Television had picked up options on cast members Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Jeremy Swift.

The series didn’t pick up Phil Dunster, who plays Jamie Tartt, according to the publication.

Keeley Hazell
Keeley Hazell recently claimed she was meant to have a bigger role on the show(Image: Getty Images)

Meanwhile, Keeley Hazell recently claimed she almost starred as Keeley Jones before the role went to Juno Temple. In her new memoir, Everyone’s Seen My Tits: Stories and Reflections From an Unlikely Feminist, she discussed meeting up with Jason to “discuss the part he had written for me”.

He informed me of the TV show. A football match took place in England. She wrote, “It would shoot in London.” Ted, an upbeat and optimistic American football coach who had come to coach a British football (soccer) team, was the person who would take the lead, as J has already discovered, a completely different sport.

More details about the role of Keeley were reportedly provided to her by Jason. She continued, “The idea of me serving as the lead in a TV show was enough to make me wet my pants in excitement, even though the show hadn’t been picked up at this point, meaning, it was just a script waiting to be sold.”

I took an audition. I once more auditioned. J said I was at the top of the list, but casting requested a different scene. J and I read together in the third and final round.

The former model claimed that Jason had allegedly punched Keeley feelig in the chest in a text message that she was receiving “a further part” of the show.

She accepted that her acting was “just awful” even though she played the part of Bex in the show. I sabotaged myself on-screen by disengaged, “she said, rather than using this as an opportunity to show how good I was.”

Putin says Trump admin ‘listening’ to Russia’s stance on Ukraine war

Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, claimed that Moscow and Washington had come to terms with the three-and-a-half-year conflict and that the United States was listening to its arguments for the invasion of Ukraine.

After speaking with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Tuesday, Putin said, “Now we see this mutual understanding, it’s noticeable.”

We’re delighted to hear this, and we’re optimistic that the constructive dialogue will continue, Putin continued.

The only European leader scheduled to attend China’s Victory Day parade on Wednesday is the Slovak prime minister, who has opposed Western sanctions against Russia and has spoken out against Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Putin’s remarks come as Moscow is still being pressured by US President Donald Trump’s administration to end Ukraine’s war. In an effort to put pressure on the Kremlin, Washington has increased tariffs on India for purchases of Russian oil.

No agreement has been reached to bring an end to Europe’s most bloody war since World War II, despite Trump’s claim that he had made “great progress” after meeting Putin last month in Alaska.

A membership in the European Union

Russia’s leaders in Ukraine and the rest of Europe have argued that the country isn’t serious about ending the conflict, and they claim that Putin could take further action against Russia if it wins.

Putin, however, refuted these claims, calling them “horror stories” and “hysteria” propagated by “incompetent people” who wanted to portray Russia as an enemy.

During the discussions in Beijing, Putin told Fico, “We have never objected to this.”

This is another issue for NATO, he said, adding that “we consider this unacceptable for ourselves.”

The Russian leader added that there were “options” for what he had said to Trump during the Alaska summit regarding the security of Ukraine.

He said, “It seems to me that this is a chance to reach consensus.”

According to Al Jazeera’s Dorsa Jabbari, who is based in Moscow, Putin reiterated that Russia should “look out for its own security” during discussions with Fico.

She pointed out that Russia must be involved in discussions regarding any kind of security guarantees for Ukraine, as Putin stated.

talks on a ceasefire

Other Western European leaders have remained in favor of Ukraine despite Fico telling Putin that Slovakia was “extremely interested” in standardizing relations with Russia.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Tuesday that he would recommend Geneva as a potential location for Thursday ceasefire talks. In an effort to put an end to the war, Trump had suggested Zelenskyy and Putin meet.

Difficulty of European countries will also come out for a meeting of the “coalition of the willing” to discuss the post-war security situation in Ukraine on Tuesday.
