Denmark vs. Scotland: World Cup qualifying

Date: Friday, September 5th, 2019 Kick-off: 19:45 BST

Josh Doig was called up as cover for the opening World Cup qualifiers in Denmark and Belarus, and Kieran Tierney and Anthony Ralston have both been called out of the Scotland squad.

Both Celtic defenders appeared to have been injured in the Champions League play-off defeat suffered by Kairat Almaty four days prior to Sunday’s goalless draw against Rangers.

Head coach Steve Clarke has only two left-back options left, with Max Johnston and Aaron Hickey serving as the other right-back options. Sassuolo’s Doig is the other option.

While Doig only holds a senior cap, left-back for Liverpool and Scotland, Andy Robertson, who has alternated between playing left-back for the national team and left-wing, has recently flitted between his natural position and left-wing for the national team.

Hickey, 23, returned from a nearly two-year absence due to serious hamstring issues.

Clarke described Hickey as “good to go” when he announced the squad last week. It’s a different conversation whether he’s good enough to spend 90 minutes playing two games. He will be managed by us.

Sabalenka has machine-like consistency – but she’s no ‘robot’

Semi-finals of the US Open 2025 for women

Flushing Meadows, New York, on September 5th, 2000 BST.

Aryna Sabalenka has won numerous Grand Slam titles while competing against other women’s players.

The world no. 1 has made 12 semi-final appearances in her past 13 major tournaments, with the most recent one being against Jessica Pegula at the US Open on Thursday, with a powerful style that can be translated across court surfaces.

Only three of those have resulted in titles, which is the kicker, though Sabalenka’s propensity to burn at a critical time.

The 27-year-old Belarusian hasn’t won a trophy in any of his attempts at the majors this year.

A erratic level has caused devastating defeats in the Australian Open final, French Open final, and Wimbledon semi-finals.

In a bid to cross the finish line, Sabalenka has signed 10-time doubles Grand Slam champion Max Mirnyi in her team in a bid to win his last significant trophy, which came when she defeated Pegula in the New York final a year ago.

After Sabalenka’s practice at Flushing Meadows on Wednesday, Mirnyi said, “Everything fluctuates in life.”

“We’re not robots, we’re not machines, right?” They’re still human, even though some of the professionals are good at their fields.

Being good is not always enough, as it is. Making perfect a tennis match is a challenge.

Sabalenka acknowledges that she has lost control when she struggles to find a winning way, especially in the most difficult situations.

It was frustration in Melbourne that the destructive power of the Madison Keys could not be overcome.

It was furious as Coco Gauff fought back at Roland Garros, making 70 unforced errors.

It was fear that Amanda Anisimova’s bravery did not match her at Wimbledon.

She is emotional, I believe. However, having control over those ups and downs is important, Mirnyi said.

She will gain more and more experience as she gets older, which is normal for younger people with more emotional outbursts.

blessing or curse? Sabolenka staying on top after a day off.

A tie-break situation is one area where Sabalenka has remained consistently composed recently.

The three-time major champion has reached the last four without losing a set in her past 17 tie-breaks, including two in New York.

In Thursday’s first semi-final, Pegula, the fourth seed from the United States, will face her in another factor, both mentally and physically.

After suffering a broken leg less than two hours prior to Tuesday’s game, Sabalenka has missed a game since Sunday.

Can a walkover give you a boost and a boost? Or a curse because it disrupts rhythm?

Marion Bartoli, the former Wimbledon champion, commented on Sky Sports, “It can be challenging.”

Every member of her team must take the responsibility of making sure her body functions properly and that her mind is present. “

They practiced for about an hour on Tuesday evening after learning about Vondrousova’s misfortune.

“I was just trying to move and throw up my energy,” Sabalenka said.

I wanted to sweat and act like it was some sort of activity or game.

On Wednesday lunchtime, Sabalenka resumed playing the warm-up courts after what she would consider to be a “normal” session in the days leading up to the games.

There was plenty of movement and work in all of her game’s defense, attacking, and serve returns during the 45-minute practice, but there was also time for fun.

Sabalenka slammed the areas between Mirnyi’s legs and Jason Stacy during serving exercises.

You are taught to wait around and deal with these circumstances, said Mirnyi, a tennis player.

As she gets ready for Osaka, Anisimova has “believe.”

Amanada Anisimova will have the chance to host the first all-American women’s US Open singles final since 2017 if Sabalenka loses to Pegula.

However, in Thursday’s second semi-final, Naomi Osaka, a two-time champion, will be in her sights.

Iga Swiatek, a Polish national, defeated Anisimova 6-0 6-0 in only 57 minutes to reach her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon last month.

However, the 24-year-old American made amends for that agonizing experience by defeating Swiatek on Wednesday in the New York quarter-finals.

Anisimova, who had only won three of her eight matches at Flushing Meadows, said, “It’s the farthest I’ve gone by far at the US Open and it’s extremely special.”

After seven years at Arsenal, Switzerland’s Lia Walti has left and has a two-year contract with Juventus.

The 32-year-old described it as “one of the hardest decisions she has ever had to make” because she had one more year left on her North London contract.

Walti made 183 appearances for the Gunners, winning the Women’s Super League title, two League Cup victories, and the Champions League when he left Turbine Potsdam in the summer of 2018.

She expressed her excitement on Juventus’ official website. After a lot of time spent there, this is a significant step for me.

I’ve followed Juventus Women for a long time and am familiar with many of the players. I’m thrilled to be here because it’s a new challenge.

Although the midfielder didn’t play in the final victory over Barcelona, she was a part of the Champions League squad that last year.

Walti captained Switzerland at their home European Championship this summer and has won more than 100 international caps.

London City to make ‘powerful statement’ with shirt

Images courtesy of Getty

The Women’s Super League opener against Arsenal will be played on Saturday, when the London City Lionesses will wear the slogan “Everyone Watches Women’s Sports” on the front of their shirts.

This will be the first time a company led by female athletes will sponsor a professional women’s sports team, according to club owner Michele Kang, who calls it a “powerful statement.”

London City and Togethxr, a sportswomen’s media company, have partnered with them, including American Alex Morgan, a two-time World Cup winner.

Aryna Sabalenka and Qinwen Zheng, both tennis players, have partnered with the Togethxr “Everyone Watches” brand at the US Open.

Following their promotion from the Championship last year, London City are the first WSL team to play completely independent.

The founders of London City Lionesses were “born to reimagine women’s football: to be bold, independent, and to advance women’s football,” said Kang.

We look forward to starting important discussions that advance women’s sport by putting “Everyone Watches Women’s Sports” on our kit.

Since taking control of London City in December 2023, Kang’s Kynisca Sports International group also owns Washington Spirit and OL Lyonnes.

Israel threatens to unleash biblical plagues on Yemen’s Houthis

Yemen’s Houthi rebels will receive the 10 biblical plagues from Egypt, according to Israel’s defense minister.

Israel Katz threatened Israel on Thursday in response to rumor-fueled reports that the Houthis, supported by Iran, have increased their missile attacks on Israel. In retaliation for the killing of Prime Minister Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahawi and several senior officials last week, the Yemeni rebel force has resumed attacks.

“Israel is being re-ran by the Houthis.” We will end all ten plagues, Katz wrote in Hebrew on X as tensions between his country and the Yemeni group continue to grow. “We will end a plague of darkness, a plague of the firstborn,” Katz said.

A missile fired from Yemen had earlier struck Israeli territory, according to the Israeli army earlier on Thursday. The military had reported that it had intercepted two Houthi missiles the day before.

The Yemeni group claimed responsibility for the Israeli-owned Scarlet Ray missile attack in the Red Sea on Monday.

Katz’s threat makes reference to the ten disasters that the Hebrew God, according to the Book of Exodus, claimed persuaded the pharaoh to expel from Egypt.

Since the Gaza War erupted in October 2023, the Houthis have launched numerous drone and missile attacks against Israel, claiming that they are supporting the Palestinians.

The organization, which has control over sizable portions of Yemen, also ran a campaign to restrict international shipping in the Red Sea, which is crucial for global trade. In response, the US launched a coordinated series of attacks earlier this year against Yemen’s Houthi-occupied areas.

Washington put an end to its daily bombing campaign in May when Oman brokered an a&nbsp ceasefire between the US and Houthis.

The group continued to launch attacks despite the fact that the agreement does not cover operations against Israel.

Israel has also launched several rounds of airstrikes against Yemen, focusing on Sanaa, the rebel-held capital, and Houthi-held ports.

Funding For Nigeria’s Foreign Missions Should Reflect Exchange — Ex-Acting Perm Sec

Chuka Udedibia, a former naira and dollar exchange rate acting permanent secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has demanded better funding for Nigerian missions abroad.

He cited the main difficulties that Nigeria’s foreign missions face as being financially and structurally constrained.

Without lasting reforms, he contends, the same issues will persist.

Udedibia stated on Thursday’s Sunrise Daily, Channels Television’s breakfast program, that the challenges facing foreign missions were stemmed from persistent underfunding, volatile exchange rates, and significant dependence on rental properties abroad.

“I would prefer to discuss the causes rather than the symptoms. The current official rate of 1 to $1 was roughly 150 a long time ago. Today, it’s about ₦1, 500, at one point, it was even about ₦1, 800.

Remittances to missions must reflect the shortfall they suffer as a result of the naira’s devaluation of major international currencies, but this is not the case. The issue began there.

You have noticed a cumulative decline in missions remittances and increased debt throughout this time. He continued, “The ministry itself is a victim.”

Although intervention had previously been taken, the relief, according to the former envoy, was frequently temporary.

Although they have made some special interventions, he said, “Don’t be surprised if we are battling the same issue again in the next six to a year.”

Udedibia also criticised Nigeria’s slow progress making permanent housing arrangements for missions abroad as a major cost-cutting factor.

“We don’t spend a lot of money in missions where we own the chancery and quarters.” However, he claimed that in some places, rent is paid for both officers’ homes and offices, and that’s very expensive.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently acknowledged the financial difficulties of missions abroad, citing allocation issues and currency issues.
