Djokovic ‘not giving up on Slams’ – but can body keep up?

US Open 2025

Dates: August 24 through September 7 in Flushing Meadows, New York

Novak Djokovic is starting to become the type of person who only appears on big events.

The 38-year-old isn’t interested in filling up his tennis diary because the process is getting older.

Over the past three months, there haven’t been many engagements. Only three Grand Slam galas, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, merited attendance.

Djokovic is unsure of his future plans now that his most recent attempt to win a 25th major title is over after losing in the semi-finals in New York.

The Serb stated, “I still want to play Grand Slams and have a full Grand Slam season next year.”

Let’s see if that will occur or not. Slams are just like other tournaments; they are not, however.

In recent years, Djokovic has significantly reduced his playing time, adjusting his schedule to emphasize the majors.

The biggest goal he has is still having is to avoid Australia’s Margaret Court when it comes to Grand Slam titles.

However, his body isn’t adhering.

Djokovic may have defied logic this year to reach the semi-finals of all four majors, but Carlos Alcaraz, 22, lost in a straight sets match at Flushing Meadows, a sign of his waning physical prowess.

Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, both 24, have won seven major titles in a row on the ATP Tour, far exceeding their opponents’.

According to Djokovic, “I can only do what I can do.”

“It will be very challenging for me to do it in the future when I compete against Sinner and Alcaraz in best-of-fives at Grand Slams.

“Best-of-three, but best-of-five, it’s tough,” I think.

Even Djokovic is running out of “gas.”

Djokovic must be a part of any discussion about tennis’ greatest players.

He developed physical problems early in his career, but he quickly overcame them and rose to the top of the game with his speed, strength, stamina, and flexibility.

Many people have called Djokovic’s on-court contortions “super-human.” He is not, though. It is obvious that Father Time is catching up with him like everyone else is.

The effort put forth by Alcaraz to earn points was too much, especially in a tight second set that you believed he needed to win to have any chance of turning things around.

I had no fuel. Carlos wasn’t able to handle the level of fitness, Djokovic admitted.

At 4-4, Djokovic had a 27-shot lead before bending over his towel box. He winced and gasped for air before bending.

He was able to hold the serve and end the second set in a tie-break with a second wind. But he was unable to recover once he lost that.

Despite suffering from injury, Djokovic bravely defeated Alcaraz in the Australian Open quarter-finals in January.

However, due to the pressure, he was unable to advance to the semi-final against Alexander Zverev.

At the French Open and Wimbledon, he advanced to the last four, but Sinner failed to break down.

Alcaraz remarked, “It’s impressive what he’s done this year in the Slams and challenging us the way he’s doing.”

What will Djokovic do next?

Djokovic is still the third-best men’s player in the world despite his advancing years and shorter schedule.

His skill against Alcaraz was reflected in the first set’s vintage backhand winner, as well as the ball-striking as he fought off the longest rally of the match in the second.

In the French Open and US Open quarter-finals, Zverev, the world’s third seed, and Taylor Fritz, the fourth seed from Germany, were defeated by this level.

In the end, Djokovic struggles to maintain his best form against Alcaraz and Sinner. Despite playing 11 tournaments this year, his Grand Slam performances have led to his elimination spots in the ATP Tour race, trailing only Alcaraz and Sinner.

He claims there is a “question mark” regarding the events he will participate in for the rest of the season in addition to an ATP 250 event in Athens, a tournament that his family and his relocation from Belgrade own.

In the wake of his defeat at Flushing Meadows, Djokovic did not want to think about the future, and he did not want to think about it as far as the Australian Open would go in less than four months.

Djokovic frequently refers to Rod Laver Arena as his second home, where he has won a total of 10 men’s titles there.

US Navy SEALs killed North Korean civilians during botched mission: Report

A prominent US news outlet reports that US Navy SEALs shot and killed several North Korean civilians in a blundered mission to install a listening device in the nuclear-armed nation in 2019.

The US Navy’s SEAL Team 6 conducted the classified mission, according to The New York Times on Friday during high-stakes diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang in the first half of 2019.

The elite special forces unit, which also killed former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2011, was assigned to station a listening device in North Korea to spy on its leaders.

However, a number of errors caused civilians to accidentally come across the US special forces while they splashed ashore while working in the dead of night with blackout communications.

The SEALs opened fire, killing everyone aboard a small fishing boat, according to the Times report, without giving a number of casualties.

According to officials familiar with the mission, US soldiers “pulled the bodies into the water to conceal them from the North Korean authorities.” According to one source, SEAL members “punctured the boat crew’s lungs with knives to ensure their bodies would sink.”

The Times claimed to have been able to learn about the flawed mission from dozens of interviews, including with members of the first Trump administration, current and former military personnel, and former and current military personnel.

Due to the mission’s classified status, none of them spoke on condition of anonymity, according to the news outlet. Many people claimed their decision to provide details was motivated by concern that the US military’s special operations failures are “often hidden by government secrecy.”

According to sources, President Trump gave the mission its final approval during his first year in office.

When reporters on Friday questioned Trump about the report, he denied having any knowledge of the operations.

Trump said, “I could look, but I don’t know anything about [it].”

He claimed that this is the first time he has heard it.

Whether Pyongyang ever pieced together what transpired in 2019 was “uncertain,” according to US officials.

US weighs strikes on cartels in Venezuela, F-35 warplanes deploy: Reports

According to news reports, US President Donald Trump is considering options for strikes against drug cartels operating in Venezuela. He had previously ordered the deployment of F-35 stealth fighter jets to Puerto Rico.

As part of its operations against Latin American drug cartels that Washington has labeled “narco-terrorist,” sources in the US reported to news agencies on Friday that 10 of the most advanced fighter jets are being flown to a Puerto Rican airfield.

According to a report from American broadcaster CNN on Friday, the Trump administration is considering attacking drug trafficking organizations in Venezuela, which would mark a dramatic escalation of Washington and Caracas’ already-increasing tensions.

Nicolas Maduro, president of Venezuela, demanded on Friday that the US abandon its “violent regime change plan in Venezuela and throughout Latin America.”

According to Maduro, the US should respect “sovereignty, the right to peace, and independence.”

Trump deserves my respect. He claimed that no military conflict can be caused by any of the differences we have experienced.

Venezuela has always been open to dialogue and converse.

In the wake of weeks of US threats, Maduro has mobilized Venezuela’s military, which has 340 000 soldiers, as well as reservists and militia members, who he claimed had more than 8 million.

Maduro warned reporters earlier this week that “if Venezuela were attacked, it would immediately start an armed struggle.”

Trump claimed on Friday that Venezuela’s regime change was not being discussed by the US.

Trump referred to Maduro’s return to office in January after allegations of irregularities in the country’s presidential election as “we are talking about the fact that you had an election that was very strange, to put it mildly.”

Trump: “They’ll be shot down.”

In addition to the reported US naval expansion in the southern Caribbean, where American warships, a number of Marines, and a large number of fast-attack submarines powered by nuclear power, have been stationed just outside Venezuelan territorial waters, comes the reported deployment of F-35 warplanes.

The US Department of Defense charged Venezuela on Thursday that it was “highly provocative” by flying two F-16 fighter planes close to the USS Jason Dunham, a guided-missile destroyer.

More than 4,500 sailors and marines are on board the Dunham, one of at least seven US warships stationed in the Caribbean.

Trump later said to Venezuela that if ship commanders believe they pose a threat to their vessels, “they’ll be shot down if they put us in a dangerous position.”

A request for comment on Venezuela’s communication ministry’s response to claims that Venezuelan fighter jets flew over a US warship was not received.

Trump claimed Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan criminal organization that he had tied to Maduro, belonged to, and that US forces blew up a speedboat in the Caribbean on Tuesday.

Law experts have questioned the legality of Trump’s claim that 11 people were killed in the US attack, which Caracas characterized as an “extrajudicial killing” of civilians.

Trump’s military strategy toward what Washington calls “narco-terrorist” groups was defended by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this week.

Rubio spoke about drug cartels while in Mexico on Wednesday, saying that “what will stop them is when you blow them up and when you get rid of them.”

Queen’s 10-word olive branch to Meghan Markle in attempt ‘to bend the rules’

According to current research, Queen Elizabeth II did not want Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to leave the royal family to start a new life in California, but the monarch was unable to stop the so-called “Megxit.”

Queen Elizabeth II tried desperately to stop “Megxit” – even saying to Meghan Markle: “You can go back to acting if you want to”.

But the 10-word offer was not enough to prevent Prince Harry and Meghan quitting royal duties for their new life in California in 2020. Harry, 40, is now American resident and has severed links with the royal family, the crown and the country.

His grandmother, with whom he shared a close bond, didn’t want Harry and Meghan to leave, according to Paul Burrell, a former servant of the royal family. He said: “There is no doubt in my mind that she didn’t want Harry and Meghan to leave. She did not want ‘Megxit’ as it was dubbed, as she knew they would be estranged from her world.

Meghan even received a message from The Queen saying, “You can go back to acting if you want to.” She offered to talk to Meghan whenever she encountered problems, and she agreed to bend the rules.

Meghan, 44, has appeared in numerous dramas over the years, including Castle, Fringe, and Suits. Prior to joining The Firm, she also appeared in roles in movies like Horrible Bosses.

Meghan and Harry decided to leave after the Queen took her on her first engagement to teach her the ropes and ensured she settled into royal life. However, things didn’t go as planned.

She (the Queen) wanted them to stay, according to Mr. Burrell, who was nearly 60 years his senior. Her Majesty and her grandson had lived in different parts of the world. How was Harry’s problems understood by the Queen? She wasn’t able to.

They did, however, have a special relationship, particularly because Harry was a bit of a joker. He didn’t always follow the rules. She disliked the Queen, but everyone around him was very stiff and starchy, despite how relaxed and funny he was.

Harry is set to visit the UK for the first time in nearly six months this week, as he has an awards’ ceremony in his diary. Speculation of a reunion with dad King Charles – and therefore a flirt with royal life again – is growing.

But in a piece for the Daily Mail today, Mr Burrell claims the picture looks bleak. He wrote: “Harry is now in an exile of his own making… It is such a shame because William and Harry with their wives were the ‘Fab Four’ and certainly for a time Harry and Meghan were ‘the golden couple’. They had everything.”

Asia Cup 2025: Teams, schedule, venues, tickets and how to follow

When the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) Asia Cup 2025 begins in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on September 9, seven nations will compete to defeat India as continental champions.

The tournament is traditionally held every two years, with Sri Lanka hosting the previous edition in 2023, when India beat the hosts to lift the crown in Colombo.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to the Asia Cup 2025:

The Asia Cup will take place when and where?

The tournament will kick off on September 9 at the Abu Dhabi Zayed Cricket Stadium with a match between Afghanistan and Hong Kong, and it will wrap up with the final match on September 28 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The two venues will host the entire tournament – comprising 19 matches – with Sharjah missing out.

What is the Asia Cup’s full match schedule?

Here is a list of all the 2025 tournament matches.

Why isn’t the Asia Cup being held in India?

According to the hosting rights schedule, India was supposed to host the tournament. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains the official host of the tournament, it is being played in the UAE due to the recent conflict between India and Pakistan.

The two neighbors agreed to only play each other in neutral locations before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be held in Pakistan. The ACC decided to hold the entire tournament in the UAE due to logistical difficulties and the competition’s compact size.

Which teams are participating in the Asia Cup 2025, and what’s the format?

There are two groups of the eight participating countries:

  • Group A: Pakistan, Oman, UAE, India, Pakistan.
  • Group B: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong

The final will be played in the following two groups.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Four stage, where all teams will compete against one another in a round-robin format following the initial group stage.

The top two teams at the end of the Super Four will qualify for the final.

Here is a list of the eight teams’ full squads.

What justifies the T20 format being used to play the Asia Cup?

The Asia Cup was played in the 50-over one-day international (ODI) format up until the 12th edition of the competition. However, the ACC decided to switch the format to Twenty20 for the 2016 edition to help teams prepare for the 2016 T20 World Cup, as the Asia Cup preceded the ICC event by a few weeks.

To match the ICC World Cup that follows, the Asia Cup has alternated between the two white-ball cricket formats, T20 and ODI.

The 50-over World Cup a month later followed India’s victory in Sri Lanka, and the T20 World Cup will follow in February 2026.

Why is Nepal not playing in the Asia Cup?

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the ACC’s permanent members were the only ones who were given five of the eight seats for the Asia Cup 2025. At the ACC Premier Cup 2024, Nepal placed fourth overall, with the other three going to the top three teams.

When is India vs Pakistan, and will they really face each other three times?

India and Pakistan have never forgotten how much attention they receive at international sporting events, particularly cricket tournaments.

Although organisers of the Asia Cup have done better by trying to eke out one more match by introducing a round-robin Super Four stage, it is no longer surprising when both teams are grouped together at mega events to ensure at least one India vs. Pakistan sellout game. This has resulted in both teams meeting twice in the past three Asia Cups.

Due to the teams’ never-meeting in the final, fate and results have not been as expected in the 16 previous tournaments.

In the Asia Cup, India and Pakistan could face off three times. Their first and most definite meeting is in Group A on September 14 in Dubai. They will meet again on September 21 at the same location if they both want to advance to the Super Four stage.

If both teams are selected, there is a chance for a third India vs. Pakistan match in two weeks at the September 28 final.

Who should watch the most action during the Asia Cup in 2025?

Abhishek Sharma (India): It is enough to establish him as a top-order player for the Asia Cup because of the young top-order batsman’s ability to secure a spot in a fierce T20 Indian starting lineup. The 24-year-old boasts the highest career strike rate of 193 among all batters in T20s and backs it up with two centuries and half-centuries in the format.

  • Rashid Khan (Afghanistan): The Afghanistan captain consistently appears at the top of the list at the conclusion of any T20 competition he plays. He is frequently regarded as one of the best T20 bowlers. Hassid, who turns 27 when the Asia Cup begins, is unfazed to use his nearly ten years of T20 international experience as both an all-rounder and a leader.
  • Hasan Nawaz (Pakistan): Pakistan have often been criticised for their batters ‘ inability to match modern-day T20 batting strike rates, but in Nawaz, they seem to have found a solution to this problem. The 23-year-old has a T20 hundred and two fifties in his 16 matches, while also recording a strike rate of 174.
  • Top-order batters in Sri Lanka will need to consistently score if they want to compete with India for the seventh Asia Cup title and claim the record-equalling title. Nissanka could prove to be just the player to do it as he enters the tournament in excellent run-scoring form as an opener. In eight of his last ten T20 innings, including three fifty, he has allowed 30 or more runs.
  • Taskin Ahmed (Bangladesh): Due to his consistency in cross-formats, the right-arm pacer is a staple of the Bangladesh team. He is a standout performer in T20s, though, with a bowling strike rate of 17.5 and an average of 22. Taskin enters the tournament after a few successful home games against Pakistan and the Netherlands.

Which leading players are unable to compete in Asia?

Some of the biggest names in Asian cricket will be absent from the tournament. These are:

    • Pakistan’s Babar Azam
    • Muhammad Rizwan (Pakistan)
    • Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz
    • Indian Rishabh Pant
    • Mohammed Siraj (India)
    • Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews
cricket
Mohammad Rizwan from Pakistan scored the most runs during the UAE’s Asia Cup in 2022.

What’s the history, and who are the past winners of the Asia Cup?

The ACC was established in 1983 to expand cricket across the continent and unite the regional teams through competitions like the Asia Cup. In the ODI competition, India won the first edition, which took place in the UAE in 1984, beating Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

The tournament remained biennial until 1990, when Pakistan pulled out over the fractious nature of its relationship with India over the conflict in Kashmir. The South Asian giants’ Asia Cup, which had begun in 1993, were canceled because politics continued to be a part of sport. The UAE has hosted the tournament twice as a neutral host in the past three editions, including the 2008 edition, while India made the 2008 trip to Pakistan.

Holders India are the most successful team, having won the title on eight occasions. With six titles to their name, Sri Lanka are not far behind.

Although Afghanistan and Bangladesh have never won the Asia Cup, this event may give them their best chance to do so in 2025 as Sri Lanka and Pakistan, who have two-time champions, struggled to do so in 2025.

Here’s the complete list of past champions:

  • India, 1984
  • Sri Lanka in 1986
  • 1988: India
  • India, 1990-1991
  • India, 1995
  • 1997: Sri Lanka
  • Pakistan, 2000
  • Sri Lanka, 2004
  • 2008: Sri Lanka
  • India, 2010
  • Pakistan, 2012
  • 2014: Sri Lanka
  • India, 2016
  • India, 2018
  • 2022: Sri Lanka

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,290

On Saturday, September 6, 2018, this is how things are going.

Fighting

  • According to the Ministry of Defense, Russian forces seized control of the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine’s Markove settlement, according to the Russian state news agency TASS.
  • According to Robert Brovdi, the commander of Kyiv’s drone forces, Ukraine attacked Russia’s Ryazan oil refinery as well as an oil depot in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region.
  • According to Pavel Malkov, the regional governor of Ryazan, debris fell on the grounds of an industrial complex after the Ukrainian attack, and eight drones were shot down by air defense and electronic warfare systems in the area, causing no injuries.
  • Under post-war security guarantees reached this week with the so-called “coalition of the willing,” led by French President Emmanuel Macron, led by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, “thousands” of foreign troops could be deployed to his country.
  • Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, declared that Ukraine’s foreign troops would be legitimate targets. Putin stated at an economic forum in Vladivostok, Russia’s far eastern city, that “we proceed from the fact that these will be legitimate targets for destruction” when some troops showed up there, especially now, during military operations.
  • Putin added that he “does not see any sense” in the presence of foreign troops “on the territory of Ukraine, full stop,” if an agreement is reached on “long-term peace” with Ukraine.
  • Russian-based forces are only being deployed on Russian territory, according to Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, according to RIA Novosti news agency in Russia.

Ceasefire

  • According to President Donald Trump, the United States is still pursuing security guarantees for Ukraine that will put an end to the nation’s conflict with Russia.
  • Trump’s “quite cynical” but “good sense” approach to diplomacy is sounded, according to Kremlin spokesman Peskov. Poskov compared Trump’s position to that of Europe, which, he claimed, was putting all efforts into preventing a peaceful settlement.
  • Trump, in contrast, is much more approachable. In a good way, he is incredibly cynical. In the context of “why fight when you can trade?” And he does everything to stop wars, Peskov said, citing these American interests.
  • Putin and Trump could meet again “very quickly,” Peskov added, adding that it was “necessary” for the Russian leader to do so.

Sanctions

  • According to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, the allies of Ukraine are working to impose new sanctions on Russia as part of a campaign to pressure President Putin into a ceasefire.

International affairs

After their leaders met with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, Trump claimed that Russia and India appear to have been “lost” to China. “Looks like we’ve lost China’s deepest, darkest, and India’s economies. May they together have a prosperous and fulfilling future together”! Trump accompanied a photo of the three leaders at Xi’s summit in China in a post that Trump posted on social media.

Russian gas and oil

  • Chris Wright, the US energy secretary, stated that he is not concerned about the impact of Russian gas exports to China. This week, Russia and China granted the construction of a gas pipeline known as Power of Siberia 2, underscoring Xi’s disregard for Western demands that he step down from a more strategic partnership with Moscow.
  • Despite criticism from Slovakia and Hungary, which have experienced Russian oil supply disruptions as a result of Kyiv’s strikes, President Zelenskyy declared that Ukraine would continue to reciprocately respond to Russian attacks on its energy facilities. After speaking with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, with whom he had previously had issues over Russian energy supplies, at his first high level meeting.
  • Even as other European Union nations cut ties with Russia as a result of Moscow’s war on Ukraine, Slovakia and Hungary have continued to purchase Russian gas and oil via the Druzhba pipeline.
  • According to Dan Jorgensen, the bloc’s energy chief, the EU will continue to pursue its plans to phase out Russian oil by 2028. He added that he had not been under pressure from Washington to push this forward.
  • The EU’s phase-out plan, according to Hungary and Slovakia, would raise energy prices and cause shortages.
  • Jorgensen claimed he was speaking with Hungary and Slovakia about their concerns, but that the EU countries could not agree on the phase-out plans. If there are nations that don’t feel they can support it because of domestic reasons, he said, “this is not something that calls for unanimous consent.”
