Israeli strikes pound Yemen’s capital as Houthi leader decries Gaza war

The Israeli military has launched air strikes on the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, Al Masirah TV reported, adding that plumes of smoke were seen rising over the city following the attacks.

Thursday’s strikes were confirmed by an Israeli army spokesperson, who said forces used dozens of warplanes and air support units to target the alleged “command headquarters of the Houthi General Staff” and “compounds” of the group’s security and intelligence apparatus.

Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz claimed the “powerful” strikes killed “dozens of Houthi terror operatives”, in a statement posted on X. But, according to the Houthi-affiliated media, two were killed and 48 were wounded in the attack.

The strikes notably come as Houthi leader Abdel-Malik al-Houthi was giving a televised speech.

The headquarters of the “military propaganda department” and manned military camps storing weapons were among the Sanaa-based targets cited by the Israeli army, which said the strikes were in response to Houthi drone and missile attacks on Israel.

On Wednesday, the Houthis claimed a drone attack on a hotel in Israel’s Red Sea port city of Eilat, which followed a series of 12 strikes carried out by Israel against Yemen’s key port of Hodeidah.

In his speech on Thursday, al-Houthi accused Israel of “brutal aggression and genocide” against Palestinians in Gaza as the war there nears its second anniversary. “This week the US used its veto at the Security Council to block a resolution calling for a ceasefire and the lifting of Israeli restrictions”, he said, adding that the US position “only emboldens Israel to continue its crimes”.

Al-Houthi also praised Palestinian factions for what he described as “heroic operations” against Israeli forces, “despite their very limited means”.

Citing residents in Sanaa, the Reuters news agency reported that Israel’s latest strikes were directed at areas in the south and west of the capital.

Israeli strikes on the war-torn country happen regularly and are usually devastating, targeting civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings and the main international airport, while killing dozens at a time.

Earlier this month, Israeli strikes on Sanaa and the northern province of al-Jawf killed more than 40 people, including journalists and children.

Since Israel launched its genocidal war on&nbsp, Gaza in October 2023, the Houthis have carried out drone and missile attacks against Israel, saying that they have been conducted in solidarity with Palestinians under fire and that their attacks will stop only when there is a permanent ceasefire in the enclave. They have also targeted vessels in the Red Sea.

Celebrity chef Rick Stein’s restaurant set to close five years after it was saved from going under

Five years after the restaurant was saved from bankruptcy, a huge celebrity chef and BBC icon will have to close the doors.

Marlborough residents are saying goodbye to a swanky restaurant belonging to a celebrity chef and BBC icon. This comes only five years after the restaurant celebrated being saved from closure by a rent reduction.

Rick Stein has multiple restaurants in the UK and Australia. One such eatery, located in a Grade II listed building in Marlborough, Wiltshire, is set to go under. The restaurant chain have said they hope a closure can be avoided but are considering shutting the site down for good following poor performance.

We are recommending the closing of our Marlborough restaurant, and we are consulting with the team to see if this can be avoided, according to a restaurant spokesperson. Our other restaurants and rooms continue to sell well, but this particular website hasn’t provided the same level of revenue.

This might be a familiar tale for many Rick Stein Marlborough employees. 39 of the same restaurant’s employees were given notice five years ago, but the same restaurant only agreed to give them their jobs back after a 25% rent reduction.

I had given in to losing the restaurant and our wonderful staff, and Rick said, “I’m delighted that our landlord in Marlborough made such a generous offer,” and I’m so happy that the restaurant can reopen.

With his ex-wife Jill, his children Jack, Charlie, and Ed, Rick co-owns the restaurant chain. Jill stated: “I think it is such a wonderful site in a beautiful market town.” She continued to claim that she felt “relieved” to reopen.

The restaurant remained struggling despite the rent reduction. Stein’s Trading Limited and his restaurant in Padstow both reported losses in accounts filed with Companies House on September 23.

Rick’s restaurants are not the only ones to be suffering. Last month, Channel 4 chef Dom Taylor announced he is closing his Caribbean restaurant, Marvee’s Food Shop, due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

There are a lot of TV credits for the chef. In Keith Floyd’s 1985 television series Floyd on Fish, he first made his first guest appearance on screen, and he later received the opportunity to present his own series, which included Rick Stein’s Taste of the Sea and Food Heroes.

He was also the author of several cookbooks and received an OBE in 2003. 2018 saw the release of a CBE for services to the economy.

Rio Ngumoha, a teenager from Liverpool, has signed with the Premier League champions for the first time.

On his Premier League debut last month, Ngumoha, 17, scored the winner against Newcastle in the 100th minute.

The length of Ngumoha’s new deal has not been confirmed by Liverpool.

In September 2024, the forward made five senior appearances for Chelsea before joining the Reds.

In a 4-0 FA Cup win over Accrington, Ngumoha became the youngest player to start a game for Liverpool at the age of 16 years and 135 days old.

When Atletico Madrid defeated him at Anfield this month, he also received a Champions League debut.

At Chelsea, he was regarded as the best player in his generation, but he left to join Liverpool because he thought first-team football was a better path.

Despite the Blues’ attempts to provide assurances and the award of several significant future contracts, this was denied.

In his pre-season debut against Athletic Club in August, Liverpool manager Arne Slot named Ngumoha in his first-team debut.

Ngumoha, who played on the left, scored just two minutes into the second half to receive a standing ovation on the right.

At the World Parasitic Championships in Singapore, Great Britain added six more medals to their tally with the women’s SB5 100m breaststroke victory.

In a minute 42.88 seconds, Harvey, 27, won in a title she last won in 2022, almost four seconds ahead of Ukraine’s Anna Hontar.

It was Great Britain’s 11th Championship gold.

“Anna going out fast for the SB5 class, which is great competition, but to win,” Harvey said. “I’m beyond happy.

“I’ve been training breaststroke all season, and this was the one, my child, my baby, so I gave it everything today,” she said. For me, that was the ideal race.

In the mixed 4x100m medley, Alice Tai, who won four golds in the competition’s first four days, won a silver medal alongside Bruce Dee, Roan Brennan, and Faye Rogers.

With a time of 4:31.65, they came in ahead of Spain.

Rogers finished just three hundredths of a second ahead of Turkish swimmer Defne Kurt in the women’s S10 100m butterfly competition earlier that day.

Rhys Darbey also broke the previous world record by placing second behind Gabriel Bandeira in the men’s SM14 200m individual medley. His time of 2:05.84 is the best in Europe.

“It’s nice to go under that old world record, and it’s unbelievable for two of us to do it,” Darbey said.
