Siraj strikes after Jaiswal helps India set England daunting target

Yashasvi Jaiswal enjoys playing against England’s cricketers.

On Day Three of India’s fifth and final Test at the Oval on Saturday, the 23-year-old opening batter recorded his sixth test century against England and his fourth overall.

However, Jaiswal had more than a chance of bringing the series to a tie of two.

On his second century of the series, he was dropped three times as India compiled 396 runs in its second innings, giving England a daunting victory target of 374.

Since Brendon McCullum took over as head coach in 2022, England has a knack for putting together impressive fourth-innings totals, which helped to start the so-called “Bazball” era.

Ben Duckett scored 34 at the other end after Mohammed Siraj’s searing yorker from the final ball of the day set up a 14-run clean bowl for Zak Crawley.

Before he ran the one, Jaiswal leapt, ran, and shaped his fingers into hearts, celebrating his century when he had earlier turned his 127th ball of the innings.

In my practice session, Jaiswal said, “I had to work really hard.” One last push, I was thinking. Wherever you play, in England, in my opinion, is challenging. This wicket is not simple to handle. We have a lot of confidence. We’ll make every effort to see what happens.

Akash Deep, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar also made significant contributions to India.

In a 107-run partnership with Jaiswal for the third wicket, Nightwatchman Akash Deep and Jaiswal made their career-best 66. At the end of the fourth and final inning, Jadeja put in a strong 53 against Sundar, who finished with a swashbuckling 53 off 46 balls.

Shubman Gill, the only Indian captain in an India-England series, only made 11 starts, but he added 754 runs, surpassing Graham Gooch’s 752 in 1990, which is the most runs by any batter.

India did its best to outlast England in a field match, dropping six catches overall, the team’s most in a home match since 2006 when it spilled six against Pakistan, which was also at the Oval.

Without the experienced Chris Woakes, who suffered a bad shoulder injury on Day One, the home side’s exhausted pace attack struggled all day.

With 5-125, England’s opener, Josh Tongue, who had already surpassed his 5-wicket mark from the opening innings, took 3-127.

“If we get the runs, it will be a great day of cricket tomorrow,” he declared. a tongue-spread The starting lineup is unbelievable, he said. Who knows where we might be if we can form partnerships? Fingers crossed, I’m not required, but if it does come down to me in the end, I’ll give it a good crack.

Transgender pool player loses discrimination case

Other

A transgender pool player has lost a lawsuit against one of the sport’s organizers.

In August 2023, the English Blackball Pool Federation (EBPF) forbade players who weren’t biologically female from its women’s competitions and teams.

Harriet Haynes, a professional player, claimed that the organization’s gender reassignment constituted “direct discrimination” against her.

However, a judge in the court dismissed her claim and said he thought exclusion was the only “reasonable” way to ensure “fair competition.”

Representatives for Haynes said they were unhappy with the decision and are considering whether to file an appeal.

The UK Supreme Court made the landmark decision in April, confirming the country’s legal definition of a woman under equalities law.

The Equality Act protects people from discrimination based on a variety of characteristics, including “sex” and “gender reassignment.”

The EBPF expressed satisfaction with the decision and expressed its openness to transgender players.

It was claimed that male cue athletes who were born and went through male puberty exhibit specific physical advantages, such as greater hand span, quicker break speeds, quicker break-through times, and longer reach.

The court determined that only those who were born as women can compete in our women’s competitions and that fair competition is necessary.

Haynes claimed that she had been subjected to hurtful remarks on social media and that her exclusion from the Kent Women’s A pool team had caused her distress and upset.

She claimed that the policy was in violation of the European Human Rights, which includes the right to respect a person’s privacy and family life.

However, the EBPF claimed that because she was “born male,” the rule did not apply to her.

We are considering the decision and our next steps, including whether or not we file an appeal, according to Matt Champ, senior associate at Colman Coyle, who represented Haynes.

After Lynn Pinches, Haynes’ opponent, refused to play her, and she conceded the Women’s Champion of Champions final in Prestatyn, Haynes claimed in January 2024, that she had been subjected to “vile” and “horrific” abuse online.

Katie Price and Kerry Katona hint at huge show return as they call Strictly ‘too snobby’

Katie Price and Kerry Katona, the reality TV duo, have called Strictly Come Dancing “too snobby” and made hints that they may return to a sizable show.

Katie Price and Kerry Katona have dismissed the idea of joining Strictly Come Dancing, claiming the BBC ballroom series is “too snobby” for them.

The close friendship began when they first met in the late 1990s and soon became close after appearing together on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! are currently gearing up for a national tour this fall.

While promoting the show, they reflected on their years in reality television and whether they might return to the jungle. It comes after Katie confessed that she has to use google maps to remind herself of her children’s birthdays.

Oh no, they’d never ask me, Katie said. I lost it or anything. Because I’ve done it twice, I doubt I would have accepted the jungle if I had the opportunity. However, I believe it would be the best show to watch.

Kerry, 43, who won I’m A Celebrity in 2004, said she was willing to return. “I’d do it. It’s a new adventure once more. She said, “I adore the jungle.” It’s a good show, Katie said, “That’s what I mean.”

The pair joked that almost every major reality series has been completed by them. Kerry remarked, “I have done every reality show, both of us.” We are the reality queens, we say. We are a part of television history. The ratings for I’m a Celebrity were the highest they’d ever had, and we were a part of it.

However, Strictly Come Dancing on BBC is one they haven’t attempted. The only thing we haven’t done is Strictly, according to Kelly.

Katie responded, “They would never have us.” They are “too snobby – Strictly for us,” the statement goes.

Despite that, both agreed to take the chance. Katie said, “I’m not going to lie, but I would love to do Strictly.” Kerry said, “I would love to do Strictly,” to which he agreed. Then Katie teased her friend, “But you can dance, so you’d be good at it.”

Kerry recalled her time on Dancing on Ice, calling it “a great adventure” and “a great memory”, but Strictly remains an unfulfilled ambition.

The pair’s upcoming tour, An Evening with Katie Price and Kerry Katona, will take them to 33 dates across the UK this autumn. The idea came after the success of their double act as Cinderella’s stepsisters in an adult pantomime.

The two will answer audience questions, share their professional lives, and offer fans a direct look at their lives that have been a source of anonymity for decades.

‘England chasing history after backing themselves into a corner’

Ollie Pope cheekily asked Ben Stokes if he could have the captain’s suite in the team hotel when he learned that he would take over as England’s head coach this week. Stokes resisted.

Pope was probably aware of his hiding place. Pope would have been aware of the biggest challenge that anyone who replaces Stokes as England captain will face, not having Stokes as the all-rounder, since this is his fifth time taking the lead in the final test against India at The Oval.

The condensed nature of the schedule has not helped this series, which has been a grueling one. Both sides have been damaged.

In the series, England paid for the loss of Stokes with almost 315 more overs than India. Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy both experienced personal injury issues, while Jasprit Bumrah was only allowed to play three Test matches.

The act is now complete. Although England has recent success in run chases, it would be truly remarkable to knock off 374 on this oval pitch.

Day four with a 50-0 record would have been a promising start, but day three’s loss of Zak Crawley’s penultimate delivery had the potential to see India draw level at 2.

The home side can point to the team’s exhausted fast bowling roster. Young back-ups like Josh Hull and Sonny Baker have had a rocky start, just like Mark Wood and Olly Stone, who have missed the entire summer of Tests.

In the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer had to endure the bowlers’ graveyard. It seems a week later that one of them would have been wiser to save for The Oval, but hindsight is wonderful. Although England were hoping for the win, it was a loss for the series. It might have been a different story if Ravindra Jadeja had been captured on the final day. Drops have become a constant theme.

Chris Woakes, the squad’s oldest member, was chosen to lead the charge against India in five of the five Tests that England could have requested. A weary 36-year-old fast bowler’s constitutional right to pursue every lost cause to the boundary should be a question, but it would have been impossible to pass a law to apply to him.

The burden was transferred to Josh Tongue, Jamie Overton, and Gus Atkinson. The trio delivered a heartfelt effort on Saturday in particular, without skipping a beat.

Overton’s 38 is his most for three years, while Atkinson’s 48.4 overs and Tongue’s 46 are both man’s most in first-class cricket.

Atkinson recalled the bowler who oversaw last year’s Test match record. His performance defied any doubts he had had the previous two months without playing cricket and suggested he might have played at Old Trafford. For Perth’s first Ashes Test, he should take the new ball.

In the fifth Test, Tongue and Atkinson each took 16 wickets. Overton had no luck to have three catches dropped, but he did little to disprove the notion that he had been an odd pick in the pre-match.

England did not require his hit-the-deck style in circumstances that necessitated a full length, despite Surrey’s man’s inability to give more. His recent history, which included two first-class wickets in four matches over the course of almost two years, did not suggest that he had a strong pedigree.

Overton has surpassed Matthew Potts and Sam Cook in the pecking order over the course of the summer, despite the slight awkwardness of the comparison between the two. How Potts and Cook might have arrived here, one wonders. The pitch was not seen until the day before the game because England was dealing with Stokes’ injury’s fallout.

Potts has a central contract. He vanished during the winter, playing Tests in Hamilton and Multan against Pakistan and New Zealand. The rumor is that England has decided he lacks the skills to handle the new ball and is neither quicky enough to be a battering ram.

Cook, who has a lot of county cricket experience, took one wicket in his 31 overs against Zimbabwe on his Test debut in May. If winning that was his only chance to impress, he chose a bad game at a bad time. If England had decided against him solely based on that, that would be harsh.

An Ashes series from November that will be just as relentless as this one will teach about resource management.

England must transport their bowlers to Perth before moving them somewhere else in Australia. Stokes is in a serious doubt, Stokes is attempting to recover from knee surgery, and Wood has experienced a setback. England will continue to keep its eyes on Archer, Carse, Atkinson, and Tongue unharmed for the next three months of white ball cricket, both in this and New Zealand, in October.

England will need to strike a balance between wanting to get off to a good start and wanting to keep on course once they are in Australia. The final three tests are consecutive.

This week there have been more Ashes pointers. England’s batters, bar Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, struggled with the movement they could expect to face down under.

Joe Root will surely have to deal with even worse from the Australians, even though Prasidh Krishna’s words shook him. Following Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon’s chirp, David Warner fired shots at his former team-mates on Saturday.

The six drops in the second inning of the fifth Test are a major issue because England cannot win in Australia if they don’t catch any balls. One of them, by sub-fielder Liam Dawson, will affect his ability to become the second spinner. After his first five-test series as a keeper, Jamie Smith appeared worn out behind the stumps. Another Australian heat wave awaits.

England’s elite run-chasers must now face the difficult task of completing their greatest goal.

West Ham sign former Newcastle striker Wilson

Callum Wilson has been signed to a one-year contract with West Ham from former clubs Newcastle and Bournemouth.

The 33-year-old free agent left Newcastle last year after not agreeing a new deal.

The striker was sat behind Alexander Isak in the pecking order for only 18 Premier League appearances last term.

However, Wilson completed his medical on Saturday with the Hammers and accepted a season-long contract.

“I’m excited to be joining a sizable football team like West Ham,” Wilson said.

I’m happy to be a part of a club that has a passion for hard work, dedication, and success like mine.

“The squad has such talent,” he said. And of course, Graham Potter has arrived as the new manager, who is making everyone a team and working together to achieve the goal of finishing as high as possible in the league.

Wilson, who signed for Newcastle in a £20m deal from Bournemouth in 2020, scored 49 goals in 130 appearances between the 2018 and 2023 caps.

Before joining West Ham, he attracted the attention of other Premier League clubs and had options in Major League Soccer (MLS).
