Thai court removes Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from office

Developing a Story
Thailand’s Constitutional Court has removed Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from office after finding her guilty of ethical misconduct after a contentious phone call with Hun Sen, the country’s ex-leader, in Bangkok.

With the ruling on Friday, Thai judges have removed Paetongtarn as their fifth prime minister since 2008.

The 39-year-old politician’s complaint to the nine-judge court stemmed from her conversation with Hun Sen in June regarding efforts to stop a deadly border conflict from escalating. She also failed to uphold the ethical standards or demonstrate the integrity required of a prime minister.

The court alleged that Paetongtarn had prioritized the country over her own, and that her actions had harmed Thailand’s reputation.

In the conversation that was leaked, Paetongtarn was allegedly pandering to Hun Sen and calling him an “uncle” while also criticizing a senior Thai army officer and labeling him an “oppositor.”

In a matter of days, the trial’s outcome had halted Paetongtarn’s suspension until July 1.

The second high-stakes court case against Paetongtarn and her father, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, came on Friday.

The 76-year-old billionaire served a reduced sentence for corruption charges after being cleared of a charge of insulting the country’s powerful monarchy last week. He now faces another court case related to his stay in a hospital wing in 2023.

Protests resume in Indonesia’s Jakarta after ride-share driver killed

Following the tragic death of a motorcycle taxi driver hit by a police car during a demonstration over a range of cost-of-living issues, protests have resumed in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta.

As riot police dispersed crowds of people calling for higher wages, lower taxes, and the elimination of political allowances, Affan Kurniawan was killed on Thursday when an armoured police vehicle struck him outside Indonesia’s House of Representatives.

Students urged protesters to rally after the death of Kurniawan on Friday outside the capital city’s police headquarters, and motorcycle taxi drivers gathered outside Jakarta Mobile Brigade Corps headquarters.

President Prabowo Subianto demanded calm, expressed condolences for Kurniawan’s passing, and set up a thorough investigation of the incident.

In a video message, Prabowo stated, “I am shocked and depressed by the officers’ excessive behavior, and I must hold the officers responsible.”

Police use tear gas

Local media reported that riot police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse demonstrators as the protest continued into the night.

Asep Edi Suheri, the police chief in the capital, claimed Kurniawan, who worked for Gojek and Grab, was hit and killed by an armored police vehicle during the clashes.

Kurniawan was not involved in the protests, according to the driver’s family and a motorcycle drivers’ association.

In a late on Thursday news conference, he said, “As police chief and on behalf of the entire unit, I would like to express my deepest apologies and condolences.”

This week, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Jakarta and other cities to protest a new monthly housing allowance for politicians that is 20 times the national minimum wage.

The demonstrators are also protesting the textile industry’s low wages, cuts to government funding, and other issues.

The protests are a “culmination of months of not only economic but also political frustration all over the country,” according to co-founder Abigail Limura of What Is Up, Indonesia?

“We are in the midst of a deteriorating economy, a collapsed job market, and thousands of layoffs. And instead of being compassionate, these people are constantly met with insults, tone-deaf, and indifference, she said.

Protesters were also upset about the ongoing issue of police brutality and the police’s overt response to demonstrations this week, according to Usman Hamid, executive director of Amnesty International Indonesia.

The motorbike taxi driver’s case is just one of many instances of excessive police force. He told Al Jazeera that there are too many cases in Indonesia, including West Papua. “We are constantly getting credible reports about arbitrary arrest and detention, torture, and extrajudicial killing,” the statement continues.

Mourinho leaves Fenerbahce after Champions League exit

After just over a year, Jose Mourinho left his position as Fenerbahce boss.

Two days after Benfica knocked the Turkish side out of the Champions League play-offs, the Portuguese depart.

Fenerbahce thanked Mourinho for his efforts in a statement, saying that the 62-year-old had “parted ways” with the club.

The statement continued, “We wish him success in his future career.”

Mourinho, who has oversaw 10 clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham, led Fenerbahce to second place in the league in his first season in charge, but controversy surrounded his reign.

Following a 0-0 draw in February, Galatasaray, the champions, announced they would “initiate criminal proceedings” against Mourinho.

Mourinho filed a lawsuit against the club asking for 1, 907, 000 Turkish Lira (£41, 000) in exchange for the falsehoods, claiming he is the “opposite” of racism.

After being sent off in a 1-1 Europa League draw with Manchester United in October, Mourinho stated that he wanted to lead a team “at the bottom of the table in England” so that he won’t have to compete against Uefa.

Following a three-year stint at Roma, Mourinho won the only European title of the club, the Conference League, at Fenerbahce.

He won three Premier League titles during his two seasons at Chelsea, as well as the Champions League victories at Inter Milan and Porto.

He helped Manchester United win the Europa League for the first time in 2017 and their most recent European title.

‘Scotland don’t want to be World Cup one-hit wonders’

Scotland vs. Fiji in the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup

Salford Community Stadium Date: Saturday, August 30 Kick-off: 14:45 BST

Scotland’s task as they prepare to face Fiji is to return to the high standards they have set themselves in the wake of a flawless start to their Women’s Rugby World Cup campaign, which saw them effectively destroy Wales.

A second straight victory, according to the Scots, is likely to earn them a spot in the quarter-finals.

They have put themselves in a fantastic position, and they must last to see their performance against Wales be the most disappointing, making this team known as World Cup one-hit wonders.

“You can’t just put out a performance like that and not back it up,” said Scotland lock Emma Wassell, “I think it’s easy for other people to look and be like, oh, a wee bit of pressure off.”

You can’t just go from one cloud to the other, says the statement.

Captain Rachel Malcolm has spoken this week about how the squad needed to experience an “emotional decompress” in place of simply riding the momentum from Wales to Fiji in response to the incredible six-try defeat of Wales.

You can’t just “go from cloud nine to cloud 10,” she said.

No one expected a 30-point win in matchday one, but Scotland are now a clear favorite for this one.

Fiji are 14th in the world, eight places below Scotland, who improved to sixth after defeating Wales.

The Fijians look for the taking after being defeated by Canada 65-7 in their Pool B opener, but the Scots are not going to let complacency creep into their hearts and risk wasting a tournament debut that has been promising.

There is no other choice; Malcolm remarked, “We must go and finish the job.”

“We have examined the game from the weekend, taken into account some of the opportunities that were missed, and evaluated the things that we did well.”

When you lose, it’s relatively easy to completely tear a game apart and evaluate every detail that can be improved, but it’s also very simple to think that the entire performance was made up.

“Recognize those things that we can still change and we can still get more from,” the first thing we did was to look at it.

There are numerous small adjustments in the game that, in my opinion, have missed opportunities.

“We’ve made an effort to treat it the same way we would have handled it if we had left that outcome,” said the company, “to make sure that we’re not missing anything.”

How ‘elite’ win would cement Raducanu’s progress

Yet another step away. The world’s top player has been threatened twice by Emma Raducanu in recent months.

Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, will face Raducanu for a spot in the US Open fourth round on Friday, giving her another chance to compete against one of the best.

The 36th-ranked Raducanu’s performances were a sign of her encouraging progress, even though the British number one ultimately fell behind to Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open.

Former world number one Lindsay Davenport told BBC Sport, “When Raducanu has faced top-10 players in previous years, it seemed like she was a little lightweight going up against the power players.”

“That feeling has left my mind over the past few months.”

“Against Sabalenka, Raducanu was able to absorb the power and maneuver her.”

“It will be a huge battle for Raducanu, but I give him a chance.”

Despite her impressive displays against Sabalenka, 22-year-old Raducanu has still only managed to defeat top-10 players in three of her 17 matches.

The 2021 US Open champion has never defeated a rival Grand Slam champion.

Although Rybakina might be ninth in New York this year, Sabalenka’s recent blitz in Cincinnati, which ended 6-1, 6-4, served as a reminder of her threat.

Three-time major champion Davenport, whose serving served as the foundation of her success, commented, “It’s great to see her looking healthy and looking better on court.”

How might Raducanu enrage Rybakina?

Before running out of steam, home favorite Raducanu put Sabalenka to the test before seriously undermining the remainder of the gripping match.

In a three-set match that had the potential to go either way, she dragged the world number one into a much tougher fight at the Cincinnati Open.

Raducanu’s performance provided a strong foundation for her service career, supported by calmness and clarity from the beginning, further supporting her ability to put the world’s best to the test.

The rangy Rybakina, like Sabalenka, relys on her baseline power to outlast her fierce opponents.

Although the match-up is different, Davenport noted that Rybakina still has a power player.

You have a little bit more time with Rybakina, I assure you. Sabalenka’s shot is slightly more offensive and dominant in the beginning, depending on how quickly both players take their shots.

Although Raducanu’s A-game isn’t as high as Sabalenka’s, I believe Raducanu will have a little more time to get started.

Will the key to success be in serving?

However, it’s very difficult for the opponents to score points against Rybakina.

She has a metronomic serve, which is second only to the WTA Tour’s ace count and first-serve percentage this season, at 6 feet (1.83m).

While Rybakina had a strong opening win over American qualifier Julieta Pareja, her level fell to a tiebreaker in the second round and gave Czech opponent Tereza Valentova three breaks.

She is the kind of opponent who can knock anyone’s racquet out of their hand if they are returning and performing well, Raducanu said.

Rybakina is not among New York’s top-ranked in terms of serving rates. Raducanu is, in contrast,.

She is the only player to have won 100% of her service games, which is helped by a 78% first-serve percentage, which is the second-highest of the tournament.

She has made a special effort to make the opening shot a weapon in recent months.

When I’m serving well, it always helps. It just kind of seeps into the rest of my game, Raducanu said.

There is a restriction. Ena Shibahara from Japan and Janice Tjen from Indonesia have both been lowly ranked qualifiers so far.

Raducanu is likely to face even more intense scrutiny because of Rybakina’s fluid groundstrokes off both wings, which back up her serve.

Raducanu questioned her’s prediction regarding her chances of winning.

It depends on the player’s mood on the day to determine how well they are feeling.
