Shirley Ballas reveals how she turned to alcohol and thought she’d ‘be better off dead’

With the release of her powerful new memoir Best Foot Forward, Shirley Ballas bravely opens up about the dark times she went through while going through the menopause.

TV star Shirley Ballas has bravely opened up for the first time about having suicidal thoughts while battling depression. The 64-year-old admitted that she found herself “heading down the same route” as her brother David, who tragically took his own life in 2003, aged 44.

She states in her new book, Best Foot Forward, that she was depressed, anxious, and desolate. I believed the plot was going to end. While I detest using the word suicidal, I had these terrible thoughts in my head when I was at my darkest.

“I could never have gone through with it because I wouldn’t want my mother to suffer the agony of losing a second child to suicide, but there were certainly times when I thought I’d be better off dead because the way I was living felt so hideous.” Shirley said that her mental health suffered while going through the menopause in her 50s and likened it to “plummeting into a black hole you can’t climb up from.”

You’re trying and fighting to scramble your way up, but never quite succeeding before falling back down again, she continued.

The Strictly Come Dancing judge used booze to try and numb the pain. She writes: “I’d been trying to manage the ‘situation’ myself with antidepressants, sleeping tablets, more medication to wake myself up and, I have to say this, alcohol.

I’d always preferred to sip wine with friends, but that was as far as it had gone. I’ve never been a boozer or someone who had a mild tip. My mother was a party girl in her day, and she still enjoys dry ginger and whisky.

“I was drinking, though. At the end of a busy day, I assumed it would give me a break from anxiety, so I turned to it. However, it actually made things worse.

I was aware that it was posing a problem. I was secretly avoiding my family and those who were close to me because I had grown dependent on that evening bottle of red. Her family initially didn’t understand what she was going through. No one was aware of what was happening, despite the fact that they had no idea how challenging I was finding life.

“It was my son who realised first. ‘OK, Mum,’ he said, ‘let’s talk about where we can get you some help.” Shirley went to see a doctor in California and says how she cried as she relayed her symptoms to him.

She writes, “I told him about the unbearable physical symptoms, the drinking, the mood swings, and how some days were so horrendous that I didn’t want to live.” He patiently waited for me while my cheeks began to cry before gently explaining to me that this was all about my hormones. That was the first time I had that as a possible cause in mind. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, which her doctor suggested, involves injecting a rice-sized pellet containing oestrogen and testosterone into the bloodstream over a three to six-month period.

“The change took a few weeks, but over time I noticed a shift and started to feel like my old self again,” she says. Shirley was at the mercy of her brother David at this time. She writes, “It dawned on me that I’d experienced similar feelings intermittently since I was a young girl as I investigated the matter and spoke with my mother about the issues that my brother had faced throughout his life until he passed away.

“The difference between me and David was that I’d been able to cope a bit better with various situations. I had to appear strong, keep going, get to work, travel the world and raise a family. I never had the chance to sit down and reflect on what was going on inside my head because in my industry you keep moving until you pop your clogs.”

Shirley describes how, even now, she occasionally struggles, particularly with anxiety. But she is aware of the unpleasant circumstances that lie ahead thanks to counseling and coping techniques like meditation.

She states, “Even now, when I have days where there is emptiness behind the eyes, I struggle to share that with anyone. I’m just getting through the day, hoping to feel more upbeat when I wake up.

Because history demonstrates this, I always believe that the darkness will pass and things will improve.

Nothing will change, despite what I’ve learned over the past 20 years of counseling, aside from the fact that you can talk about it until you’re blue in the face and don’t want to unclip the baggage. My chest tightens, my heart beats, and my body turns from cold to warm to raging hot, and I know I’ll have anxiety until the end of my days.

Shirley says in the book, “I would advise every woman, please don’t suffer in silence. ” She discusses her decision to go public with her struggles. I wish I had asked for assistance sooner and stressed how crucial it is to check your hormones.

Szoboszlai Gem Seals Liverpool Win Over Arsenal

Liverpool defeated title rivals Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai’s brilliant free-kick.

With seven minutes left, Szoboszlai curled a sublime set-piece past David Raya at Arsenal’s Anfield to tussle with the two premier league leaders competing for the title.

As Arsenal lost for the first time this season following consecutive victories, the Hungary midfielder’s gem was enough to earn them a third successive league win.

Since the end of the season, the two teams have been fighting for expensive weapons since Arsenal finished second overall behind Liverpool last year.

At both Anfield and the Emirates Stadium, a number of well-known signings have been made in an effort to shift the balance of power.

On Sunday, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Martin Zubimendi, and Viktor Gyokeres from Liverpool and Arsenal, respectively, had a chance to shine in public.

None of the newcomers surprised. The moment was crucial for Szoboszlai, who was deployed out of position at right-back.

25 yards from goal, Zubimendi fouled Curtis Jones, and Szoboszlai delivered a masterful finish.

As they aspire to their record-breaking 21st English title, Liverpool, who have the only 100% record remaining, will enter the international break in a familiar position at the top of the table.

After a result that suggested their effort to end a run of three successive second-place finishes is still a work in progress, Arsenal must lick their wounds.

Erling Haaland scored his 88th goal for the City in the Premier League earlier that day at the Amex Stadium, marking his 100th appearance there since joining Borussia Dortmund in 2022.

Worcestershire see off Somerset in One-Day Cup semis

Worcester, Metro Bank One-Day Cup semi-final

Worcestershire 275-9 (50 overs): Lategan 78 (82), D’Oliveira 45 (52), Green 4-52

Somerset 141 (29.2 overs): J Rew 47 (55), Shahzad 4-36, Brookes 3-16

Somerset was defeated by Worcestershire using the DLS method.

With a 131-run victory over Somerset at New Road, Worcestershire won the One-Day Cup final.

With Jack Leach’s excellent 2-28 from 10 overs at its core and Ben Green also claiming 4-52, the home side posted a respectable 275-9 with Daniel Lategan scoring a List A-best 78 off 82 balls against a disciplined Somerset attack.

On a strong pitch, Somerset’s top order imploded against Khurram Shahzad (4-36). The target looked around par.

Before the rain, the visitors were more than 100 runs adrift of the DLS score, falling to 108-7 from 23.4 overs.

As openers Lategan and Brett D’Oliveira (45) added 85 in 15 overs, Somerset chose to bowl but were waited for their first breakthrough.

However, the bowlers were unfavorable, and wickets started to fall as risks were taken in search of speed.

Jake Libby skied Aldridge to mid-off, while D’Oliveira skied Kasey Aldridge to mid-off and Kashif Ali was spotted by Finley Hill with the greatest nonchalance off Green.

Lategan, 19, bowled Rob Jones and posted a polished maiden fifty before falling lbw, reverse-sweeping Leach.

Worcestershire needed some late-order contributions after Ethan Brookes was lbw and swept Tom Lammonby, and they received them from Matthew Waite (24 off 26), Tom Taylor, and Henry Cullen (32 off 30), respectively, before he hit three sixes in an unbeaten 22 off 10 balls.

In his final three balls, Pakistan international Shahzad made two wide plays, one of which went for four.

However, Thomas Rew edged over to slip and Archie Vaughan was brilliantly caught by Ben Allison at midwicket and Lammonby and Lewis Goldsworthy were beaten for pace when attempting to pull catches.

Somerset’s plight was made worse by Worcestershire’s other seamers. Joshua Thomas was quickly caught by Lategan on the long leg boundary, and Ben Allison dissipated Green and Hill at mid-off.

Before heavy rain hit Somerset in dire straits, Green fell to the last ball.

Aldridge, caught behind, and Leach, slammed off Brookes, quickly lost them and needed another 165 from 14.2 overs to reach a revised target.

James Rew and Jake Ball’s final duo, James Rew and Jake Ball, needed 137 runs from 10 overs, but they only managed five before Rew lifted Brookes (3-16) to long off, causing long, loud cheers from the home fans.

Worcestershire “deserved to be in the final decision,” Worcestershire said.

Dan Lategan, a Worcestershire batter:

I couldn’t be happier because that was amazing. We had some movement at the beginning, which is what we know New Road always does, but we made it work really well.

I put my best foot forward and was disappointed to be out, but the guys in the order eventually put us up to a high score.

It was an incredible spell just before the rain started, when we kept taking wickets, and we would have liked closer to 300, but we were very confident, and that showed in the powerplay.

“Sorry, we bat deep, but after every wicket, we said, “We know there is more talent coming in, so let’s keep our energy and take wickets.”

Coach of the Somerset One Day Cup, Paul Tweddle:

“We have been outplayed,” the player said. “We started out fairly well with the ball, but fair play to them, they came at us hard and made some really good shots in those first ten overs.”

When Jack Leach did a great job and the other guys dragged us back into the game, “Then we well back into the game in the period from 10n to 40 overs,” we found ourselves halfway there with the feeling that we could hit the target or something similar.

“But then we never really managed to hold onto the game when we batted; instead, we struggled to adapt to the conditions and found it challenging on that wicket. Occasionally, you lose wickets, making things harder and harder.”

Lucy Beaumont fuels engagement rumours as she sports ring after Jon Richardson split

Just 16 months after the comedian split with her fellow comic ex-husband, Lucy Beaumont was caught at the Big Feastival in the Cotswolds wearing what appeared to be an engagement ring.

Lucy Beaumont seems to be embracing a fresh start following the end of her marriage to fellow comedian Jon Richardson.

The 42-year-old comic has recently been seen sporting a sparkling diamond ring on her engagement ring after enjoying a hugely successful stand-up tour.

The sighting took place last Sunday at the Big Feastival in the Cotswolds, where Lucy attended the family-friendly event held on Blur bassist Alex James’s Oxfordshire farm.

The comedian was seen mingling with festivalgoers and standing in line for tacos while wearing a sleeveless blue-and-white top, ripped jeans, and wedge sandals. The glittering three-diamond gold band on her hand, however, really caught people’s attention.

It marks the first time Lucy has been publicly photographed wearing the ring, in pictures obtained by the Mail, and fans have been quick to connect the dots between the comedian’s new piece of jewellery and her personal life.

Since she first saw sound engineer Martin Wallace, 44, with him in October of last year, the mother-of-one has been in contact with him. The pair were photographed leaving the Manchester Lowry Theatre together, and they were later spotted leaving the Royal Hall in Harrogate that month.

Wallace, who lives in Stockport and has collaborated with Lucy’s ex-husband on his 2014 Nidiot tour, is based there and has done so with famous people like Dara Briain and Rob Beckett.

Lucy hasn’t yet revealed the identity of her new partner, but in her new sketches, she has been open to making changes.

She joked to fans during a recent performance that she had been seeking medical attention because she had been wondering if menopause had begun because of her growing anger.

She recalled how the doctor assured her that she was alright while adding that there was still time to go.

Lucy and Jon announced their nine-year union’s conclusion in a joint statement released in April 2024. We would like to let you know that we have separated after nine years of marriage, they said. We have decided to divorce and separate ourselves after making the difficult decision to do so informally and amicably.

The couple, who have an eight-year-old daughter, requested anonymity and said that they were only concerned with her well-being.

Fans were shocked to learn that the pair had been working together since they tied the knot, beginning their careers as comedians.

The Richardsons’ hit television series, Meet the Richardsons, ran for five seasons and made them known as a comedy double act. It featured the pair as exaggerated versions of themselves.

Although Lucy has frequently acknowledged that many viewers mistake their on-screen squabbles for reality, Lucy has frequently acknowledged that they were exaggerated for laughs.

Despite her personal upheaval, Lucy has resurrected her sense of self-assurance in her career. Her most recent stand-up performance has sold out venues nationwide, extending its run until the year’s end.

She is also set to appear in the highly anticipated first BBC series of The Celebrity Traitors. If the ring is anything to go by, it seems she’s now come out the other end of her divorce romantically too.

Two million impacted as Pakistan’s Punjab faces worst floods in its history

According to a senior official, Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province is experiencing the biggest flood in its history as river water levels reach record highs.

According to a recent study, Pakistan, one of the nations most vulnerable to climate change, has seen increased monsoon rains this year due to global warming. In recent months, flash floods and landslides have erupted in the mountainous north and northwest due to downpours and cloudbursts.

After India released water from swollen rivers and its overflowing dams into Pakistan’s low-lying regions, residents in eastern Punjab also experienced unusual amounts of rain and cross-border flooding.

The largest flood in Punjabi history occurred during this. Two million people have been affected by the flood. The senior provincial minister for the province, Marriyum Aurangzeb, stated at a press conference on Sunday that this is the first time the Sutlej, Chenab, and Ravi have carried such high levels of water.

According to her, local authorities have been evacuating residents and using security and educational facilities as rescue camps.

People were also seen clambering into rescue boats and sailing across completely submerged farmland on Pakistani TV channels. What remained from damaged homes that are now abandoned was loaded onto boats by other people.

Pregnant women have begun to seek refuge from the floods in a former classroom in the area, which is now a makeshift relief camp.

Shumaila Riaz, 19, endured cramps during her first pregnancy while spending the past four days at the relief camp. She is now seven months along.

She told the AFP news agency, “I wanted to think about the child I am going to have, but I am not even certain about my own future.”

Women huddled in the overcrowded school, which has hosted more than 2, 000 people, surrounded by mud and stagnant rainwater, clad in dirty clothes and had unbrushed hair.

While the region’s seasonal monsoon brings in farmers’ rely on rainfall, climate change is making the phenomenon more unpredictable and deadly.

Prior to a significant wave erupting from the Chenab River in Multan, authorities have also installed explosives on five important embankments to divert water away from the city, if necessary.

Amir Kareem Khan, the commissioner of Multan, claimed that teams tried to persuade residents who had not yet evacuated to do so while using drones to monitor low-lying areas.

Deputy Commissioner Wasim Hamad Sindhu appealed to people seeking shelter in government-run camps and declared, “We cannot fight it, we cannot stop it.

The Foreign Ministry is also “collecting data regarding India’s deliberate release of water into Pakistan,” Aurangzeb continued on Sunday. India did not respond right away.

The first official diplomatic exchange between the rival countries since a crisis in May brought them close to war with India last week, alerting Pakistan to the possibility of cross-border flooding.

Punjab, the nation’s top wheat producer, accounts for around 150 million people in Pakistan.
