Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has hosted South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in Tokyo for a visit aimed at reaffirming security cooperation and showcasing friendly ties between the two East Asian neighbours facing common challenges from their mutual ally, the United States.
On his first official visit to Japan since taking office in June, Lee met Ishiba on Saturday at the premier’s residence to discuss bilateral ties, including closer security cooperation with the US under a trilateral pact signed by their predecessors.
“As the strategic environment surrounding both our countries grows increasingly severe, the importance of our relations, as well as trilateral cooperation with the United States, continues to grow”, Ishiba said in a joint announcement with Lee after their meeting.
The leaders agreed to resume shuttle diplomacy, expand exchanges such as working holiday programmes, and step up cooperation in defence, economic security, artificial intelligence and other areas. They also pledged closer coordination against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.
The snap election victory of the liberal Lee – following the impeachment of conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol for declaring martial law – raised concerns in Tokyo that relations with Seoul could sour.
Lee has criticised past efforts to improve ties strained by lingering resentment over Japan’s colonial rule. The South Korean government last week expressed “deep disappointment and regret” after Japanese officials visited a shrine in Tokyo to Japan’s war dead that many Koreans see as a symbol of Japan’s wartime aggression.
In Tokyo, however, Lee reaffirmed support for closer relations with Japan as he did when he met Ishiba for the first time in June on the sidelines of a Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada.
Lee’s decision to visit Tokyo before Washington has been well received by Japanese officials, who see it as a sign Lee is placing great importance on relations between the two neighbours.
For Ishiba, who faces pressure from right-wing rivals within his governing party to resign over its July election loss, Lee’s visit and a successful summit could shore up his support.
Despite their differences, the two US allies rely heavily on Washington to counter China’s growing regional influence. Together, they host about 80, 000 US soldiers, dozens of US warships and hundreds of military aircraft.
Japan and South Korea also share common ground on trade, with both agreeing to 15 percent tariffs on US imports of their goods after Trump had threatened steeper duties.
We “agreed that unwavering cooperation between South Korea, the US and Japan is paramount in the rapidly changing international situation, and decided to create a virtuous cycle in which the development of South Korea-Japan relations leads to stronger cooperation”, Lee said alongside Ishiba.

South Africa have recalled David Miller, Keshav Maharaj and Donovan Ferreira to their T20 squad for the white-ball tour of England next month.
Middle-order batter Miller, 36, and 35-year-old spin bowler Maharaj missed the recent T20 tour of Australia, which the hosts won 2-1.
Big-hitting Ferreira last played for his country in the shortest format in December but has been in good form in franchise cricket, including in this summer’s Hundred competition.
The Proteas will play three one-day internationals and three T20s on their tour of the UK, which begins on 2 September.
All-rounder Marco Jansen, 25, and fast bowler Lizaad Williams, 31, are also included after recent injuries.
Teenage fast bowler Kwena Maphaka has been retained in the ODI squad as cover for Kagiso Rabada, who is continuing his recovery from an ankle injury.
Paceman Rabada, who has almost 250 white-ball wickets, will travel with the ODI squad and is expected to be available for all three T20s.
“We’ll reassess Kagiso in England”, said head coach Shukri Conrad. “We are hopeful that he will be available for part of the ODI series, but we’re prioritising T20 cricket and will take a conservative approach. We won’t rush him back”.
Both teams are building towards the 2026 T20 World Cup, which is being held in India and Sri Lanka in February and March.
The opening game of the tour is the first ODI at Headingley on 2 September (13: 00 BST).

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) notified the Ibadan and Lagos Zonal Directorates of their requests for further investigation on Friday.
The EFCC is currently prosecuting three suspects, Adefowora Olanipekun, Otorudo Avwerosuo, and Ehirim Chukwuebuka, according to a statement from Oyo State’s head of media and publicity, Dele Oyewale, in Ibadan.
The commission explained that CBEX allegedly defrauded unsuspecting Nigerians into making investments that would result in significant financial losses for many.
The EFCC is requesting victims who invested their funds through individuals connected to the CBEX offices in Ibadan and Idimu, Lagos, to report to the Ibadan Zonal Directorate and Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 in light of the above and the need to assist the commission in its ongoing investigation, the statement continued.
Thousands of Nigerians were drawn to CBEX because it promised high returns on cryptocurrency investments when it first launched in July 2024. Users started reporting misplaced and lost funds by April 2025, causing outrage on social media.
Four Nigerians and four foreigners were among the eight people the EFCC had in custody in connection with the scheme in April.
Investors were instructed to deposit USDT, a stablecoin, into wallets owned by the suspects, according to investigations led by the EFCC’s cybercrime section.
In a pending outcome of the investigation, Judge Emeka Nwite approved the EFCC’s request to detain and arrest six suspected Ponzi schemers, Adefowora Abiodun, Adefowora Oluwanisola, Emmanuel Uko, Seyi Oloyede, Awerosuo Otorudo, and Chukwuebuka Ehirim.
The Federal High Court in Abuja’s Judge Mohammed Umar arraigned Messrs Otorudo and Ehirim on July 7th. According to an online report, they were later given bail worth $10,000 each, with two similar-sized sureties.
On July 18, Olanipekun and his business, ST Technologies International Limited, appeared in court in the same court.

The defendants allegedly invited members of the public to deposit money for a fixed term or payable on call through CBEX without getting the Securities and Exchange Commission’s written consent in one of the allegations.
They are alleged to be in violation of Section 96(5) of the Investment and Securities Act of 2025. The suspects have entered a not-guilty plea.
In a statement, the EFCC urged victims to offer their assistance to the Commission in its investigation by investing money in individuals connected to the CBEX offices mentioned in this report.

Leeds and Reading Festival is underway as music fans dance their way into Bank Holiday weekend, however boos were heard last night following one shocking thing during Travis Scott’s performance up north.
On Friday, Hozier and Chappell Roan played in Reading and today they perform in Leeds, meanwhile Travis Scott played at Leeds and will headline at Reading on Sunday. However, fans have all had the same reaction following the Houston-born rapper’s first performance of the festival weekend. Boos were heard repeatedly as his set appeared to abruptly end at Bramham Park.
The 34-year-old, who has two children with ex partner Kylie Jenner, put on a lively show with a bold set and fireworks. But after all the fanfare, the American rapper suddenly left the stage, telling the crowd: “I love you so much. Goodbye.”
The crowd was left gobsmacked and everyone has been saying the same thing since. A number of videos of the incident were shared online. On TikTok, fan Alfie said: “Travis Scott cuts his Leeds Fest set short by 35 minutes.”

In the clip, people can be heard booing as a sign on the big screen read: “Respect our neighbours and leave quietly”.
Alfie added: “What! Insane. He was on for less than an hour, what a colossal failure. Oh my god, all that production, all those fireworks, just for him to go off way before he was meant to finish”. “I am actually in shock at that”, he added.
Alfie also said “the crowd was a bit dead”. He told people heading to Reading Festival to see Travis Scott to “prepare themselves”.
A number of people shared their theories on the swift exit in the comments. One individual claimed: “Someone said it was both tech issues and people were getting hurt in the crowd”.
“It’s because the crowd was dead”, joked another. One other wrote: “There’s no way people think it’s acceptable to leave just because of a bad crowd. Festivals need to stop booking rappers”.
“It’s a shame artists don’t care about Leeds Fest as much as Reading as it’s not televised”, commented another.

In another video, a festival-goer shared what they believe happened: “Reason behind why Travis Scott left early – he wasn’t happy with the tech crew as they didn’t fix the rising platform, so he stormed off and left”.
“It wasn’t just tech issues, apparently there were loads of people getting hurt and being pulled from the barriers”, shared another. “
In another video shared from the evening, people rushed to support the rapper. One individual said:” Looked amazing, wish I could have taken my son to see him. “
While another wrote it looked” so lit”. Another said they” feel bad for Travis”.
