Who are Premier League title favourites: Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City, Utd?

The new Premier League season kicks off on Friday, August 15, when champions Liverpool entertain Bournemouth.

Arne Slot’s Reds will be favourites to lift the trophy once more, but can Arsenal improve on three consecutive second-placed finishes? Manchester City are expected to bounce back from an uncharacteristically quiet season under Pep Guardiola, while Chelsea are the FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) champions.

Al Jazeera Sport takes a look at the likely candidates.

Liverpool

Slot’s side stormed to a record-equalling 20th Premier League title last season. The Reds finished 10 points clear of Arsenal – and that after taking their foot off the gas in a winless four-game run to finish.

Florian Wirtz is the big name summer arrival from Bayer Leverkusen and comes with a hefty price tag of $156m. The German midfielder follows French forward Hugo Ekitike and Dutch wide man Jeremie Frimpong through the Anfield gates.

The latter will be utilised both in covering for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has joined Real Madrid, and Mohamed Salah, who will depart midseason to represent Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Securing the ongoing services of both Salah and Virgil van Dijk, however, was undoubtedly the biggest piece of business the Reds needed.

Egyptian forward Salah was heavily linked with the Saudi Pro League and, having topped the goalscoring charts against last season with 29 goals, would have been a huge loss.

Dutch defender and Liverpool captain van Dijk has been the rock upon which the Reds’ fortunes have been built since his arrival from Southampton in 2018.

The pursuit of Aleksander Isak from Newcastle United has been ongoing for some time. Slot has teased the Reds may return with a second bid, and if one position has been in question, it is an out-and-out striker – Isak’s 23 goals last season proved he is one of the hottest talents in that role.

“Every team in the Premier League is spending money,” Slot said in the run-up to the new campaign. “So if we are only favourites because we’ve spent a bit, I would see that as weird because we’ve lost a lot as well. But that we are favourites because we won it last season and we played so well, that’s clear.”

The tragic death of Diogo Jota, in a car crash in Spain in July, supersedes all concerns of success. Coming to terms with his loss will be painful in training and in matches, with his absence felt in ways far beyond the gap the Portuguese forward leaves in the starting XI each week.

Arsenal

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have been the form team of the last three seasons in the Premier League, but three second-place finishes in a row are starting to burn deeply in north London.

Substantial reinforcements have been sought to help the Gunners end their 22-season wait to lift the Premier League title once again.

Viktor Gyokeres is the headline news, given Arteta made little secret of his frustration with the club’s lack of striking options last season.

The signing of the Swedish striker from Sporting Lisbon for 63 million pounds ($85m) will be seen as the best chance to close the gap on Liverpool.

Noni Madueke’s capture from Chelsea, meantime, divided Arsenal fans. The England international does, however, bring further depth and additional quality to a forward line, whose top scorer last season was Kai Havertz with a paltry nine goals.

The arrival in midfield from Real Sociedad of Martin Zubimendi, a Euro 2024 winner with Spain, can only solidify the already meticulously manufactured system Arteta has arranged.

Chelsea

Chelsea will surely hit the ground running following their stunning FIFA Club World Cup success against European champions Paris Saint-Germain last month.

Enzo Maresca’s side stormed to a 3-0 win against the Parisians, who swept through the UEFA Champions League – culminating in their own 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan – to complete the treble.

Joao Pedro’s three goals across the semifinal and final at the CWC have already gone a long way towards validating his 60-million-pound ($80.7m) signing from Brighton before the tournament. That move came on top of the capture of fellow strikers, Liam Delap from Ipswich and Estevao from Palmeiras.

Estevao scored against the west London club in his last game with his Brazilian outfit during the quarterfinals of the CWC.

Disjointed has long been a word associated with Chelsea on and off the pitch, certainly since their last Premier League title win in 2017.

Whether Maresca can continue to tie the team together following the CWC triumph, and whether that tournament will test the legs of the Blues players later in the season, could well be deciding factors in Chelsea’s title challenge.

Manchester City

Will Pep Guardiola’s team bounce back to the form that saw them claim a record fourth consecutive Premier League title only a season ago? Or will the light blues of Manchester continue to feel the heavy burden of a side that conquered all before them, only to seemingly lose control of their own success last season?

The injury to Ballon d’Or holder Rodri undoubtedly hit City hard last term, and the news that he will miss the start of the new campaign will also come as a huge concern to Guardiola.

For a team that won an unprecedented five trophies in 2023, and the record-setting Premier League title the following year, to fall so far last season came as a huge shock to all, not least their manager.

Indeed, many believed last season may well have been Guardiola’s final term. Even with a two-year contract extension signed midway through the last campaign, a slow start to this season will once again cast doubt where once it seemed unthinkable.

The departure of Kevin De Bruyne marks a passing of the guard, and that absence will now be doubly felt in the early stages with the unavailability of Rodri.

Their nine league losses last season were more than their two previous seasons combined and resulted in a first finish outside the top two since 2016-2017. The Blues also crashed out of the Champions League and League Cup early, and their FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace meant no silverware for the first time in eight years.

Midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, winger Rayan Cherki and goalkeeper James Trafford have all been recruited in the close season.

The summer spree pushed City’s spending for 2025 past the 300-million-pounds ($403.5m) mark, following the arrivals of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Nico Gonzalez and Vitor Reis in the January window.

“I’m pretty sure it’ll be good, but it won’t be a red carpet season,” Guardiola said.

“The expectation at the beginning of the season is always, let’s go and try to do our best, win the first games, get confidence and move forward. We want to try and do better than last season, especially with consistency.”

A cloud that continues to hang over the club, however, is that they still face 115 charges of breaking Premier League financial regulations.

City, who have always denied any wrongdoing, were charged with the alleged breaches in February 2023. A verdict during the October international break.

Manchester United and the rest

United have defied their financial woes to reinvent their front three with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo signed earlier in the window, and the big-money move for Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

The Red Devils’ captain Bruno Fernandes hit out at a “lazy” preseason performance following the 2-2 preseason draw with Everton, and also called for more reinforcements.

One of the longest serving players at the club, England international Luke Shaw, also criticised a “toxic” dressing room culture that manager Ruben Amorim was trying to change.

Just like Guardiola, his opposite number across the Manchester divide, how long the reversal in fortunes takes is likely to take will define how much longer Amorim has at the helm.

A slow start may mean his tenure barely lasts a year having replaced Eric ten Hag as manager last November.

Newcastle United narrowly missed out on a top-four spot, and with it Champions League qualification, last season, having been seen as early-season title contenders.

The doubts surrounding their star name, Isak, cast huge doubts heading into the new season for Eddie Howe’s side. Should the Swede depart, and with their own top target, Sesko, moving to Old Trafford, the Geordies look the most under threat of falling short of last season’s progress.

Aston Villa were another side that have threatened to break into the Premier League’s elite, having secured Champions League football two years ago, which resulted in a run to the quarterfinals last year.

Ivory Coast forward Evann Guessand has been signed from French club Nice for a reported fee of at least 30 million euros ($35m). The 24-year-old winger scored 13 goals last season.

If the transfer merry-go-round continues, however, then Villa striker Ollie Watkins could be the next on the move, with all of last season’s top four having been linked with a move for the England international at some stage.

Five miles from 2019 nadir, Wrexham enjoy proud day despite loss

In December 2019, Wrexham reached their nadir, bottom of the National League and having to apologise to their fans for the worst league position in their 155-year existence, before a midweek trip to Eastleigh.

On Saturday, they were back in the same part of the world – but what felt like a different universe.

St Mary’s is only five miles down the road from Eastleigh but, whereas 56 Wrexham supporters made the long trip south six years ago, more than 3,000 were at Southampton.

If ever there was a yardstick for Wrexham’s extraordinary rise, it was this curtain-raiser for their first season in the second tier of English football for 43 years.

As recently as 2023, Southampton were four divisions higher than Wrexham.

Now, after Saints’ relegation from the Premier League last season and the Welsh club’s historic three successive promotions, they are Championship rivals.

This was a moment to savour for Wrexham’s fans, even in defeat, basking in the south coast sunshine and making a racket all afternoon in a carnivalesque away end.

“It was a very proud moment for everyone connected with the club today,” said manager Phil Parkinson.

It was those supporters who saved Wrexham from extinction back in 2011, raising the funds to buy the club and nurse it through the draining non-league years before Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney arrived.

The Hollywood takeover has been well documented, the cameras following Wrexham’s every move.

Four years in and three promotions later, they are just one step away from the ultimate goal that their celebrity owners boldly laid out on their first day in north Wales: the Premier League.

The notion of a fourth straight promotion might be fanciful but Southampton – who were in the top flight last season – offered a useful starting point for Wrexham, a barometer for the challenges to come.

Although Wrexham’s net spend so far this summer is the highest in the Championship, they have had to radically upgrade a League One squad.

Southampton are operating from a different position, still boasting several Premier League players despite a raft of off-season sales.

“Southampton brought subs on today who were worth £30m or £40m – that was the difference,” said Parkinson.

Having been the main attraction in lower leagues, Wrexham will have to get used to playing against teams with greater resources.

They are certainly looking to mix it with their new rivals, though. Their eight signings – many of them for club-record fees – are evidence of their ambition.

One of the most encouraging aspects of Wrexham’s performance at Southampton was the impact of their new recruits, six of whom started at St Mary’s.

“I think when we reflect, it’s a very proud day for the club playing at this level and there was a lot of positives for us,” said Parkinson.

“The new lads came in and have done really well but the existing players as well, I thought they were really good. That gives us great heart for the season ahead.”

It is not that he is unmoved by the club’s dizzying ascent through the divisions but rather that he is able put the celebrity attention and global interest to one side and simply get on with his work.

“The message was quite simple today in the dressing room,” he said.

“It’s important that we play in a manner throughout this season which we have done over the last four years and we keep representing the club in the way we’ve done. The honesty and endeavour out there I thought was different class.”

Having endured their fair share of lows, Wrexham have enjoyed the highs that the past four years have provided.

Huddersfield comfortably sweep aside Catalans

Betfred Super League

Huddersfield (12) 18

Tries: Flanagan 2 Gagai Goals: Flanagan 3

Catalans (0) 6

Huddersfield Giants finally registered their first home win of the 2025 Super League season with a 18-6 victory against Catalans Dragons.

Full-back George Flanagan racked up 14 points for Giants in a player of the match display as the hosts outplayed the club from Perpignan.

Giants wing Jacob Gagai raced clear to score a breakaway try in the first half for his ninth in Super League this season.

After a drab 18 minutes, Flanagan lit up the game when he broke away down the right hand side following a Huddersfield set piece to dive over under the sticks and break the deadlock.

Flanagan then blotted his copybook when he missed a very presentable opportunity to kick another two points after Catalans’ Matthieu Laguerre was caught offside.

From the restart, Catalans’ Australian second-row Bayley Sironen was sent to the sin bin for a needlessly high tackle on Matty English.

With the sun out in the second period, Catalans thought they were on the scoresheet when Oliver Partington dived over next to the sticks but the try was chalked off after Laguerre was penalised for a knock-on on the floor.

Just after the hour mark, a good kick from Keary found Tommy Makinson who unselfishly found Sironen, now back on the field, to dot down and put the visitors on the board with Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet cooly slotting the extras from the left touchline.

That was as good as it got for the visitors who drastically lacked imagination in the final third, being forced into kicking on the final tackle by a Giants defence who kept their concentration despite a dismal 2025 campaign.

After Catalans were caught offside once more in front of their own goal, Flanagan called for the tee and easily kicked his third goal of the match to extend the hosts lead to eight.

Katie Price shared a cryptic post about motherhood amid reports of a rift between her and daughter, Princess Andre. The former glamour model recently revealed she was “upset” about not being featured in her daughter’s new show, The Princess Diaries, about the teen’s childhood and life in the spotlight.

Amid rumours of a family rift, which Princess denied, Katie took to her social media to share a post about “only having one mum”. In a big font, the post read: “You only get one mum,” before it went on to list the many stage’s of a person’s life and how mothers are treated throughout the stages.

It read: “5 years old – Mum, I love you. 12 years old – Mum, you’re so annoying. 16 years old – I can’t wait to move out. 25 years old – Mum, you were right about everything.” It comes as Katie Price reached out to Harvey’s lookalike half-brother but fears ‘he’s too scared’.

The post continued: “30 years old – I just want to be at mum’s house. 50 years old – I’m not ready to lose my mum. 70 years old – I’d give anything for one more day with her.”

Princess’ new reality-series The Princess Diaries will air on ITV2 tomorrow night (Sunday, 10 August) but Katie, 47, recently said she’s upset as she wasn’t asked to take part.

Days before the show’s release, Katie took to her podcast to share her upset. In this week’s episode of The Katie Price podcast, Katie said there is no rift between herself and her daughter.

She fumed: “But what hurts my feelings – and it does upset me – is when your kids grow up, you go to their assemblies, you go to their Christmas things, you go to their awards, you know, you go to their football matches or their gymnastics, you’re involved in everything they do.

“And knowing that what my career has been, Princess is taking that same path – trying to do the same as what I’ve done – which I absolutely love and adore of Princess but I had not been allowed to go on any photoshoot, no signings or Superdrug openings or anything like that. Why? Because I’m not allowed and I’m not welcome.”

Following Katie’s rant on her podcast, Princess broke her silence and shared her side of the story. Denying any fallout, she told Daily Mail: “’It’s my show, it’s not based on my parents, it’s focused on me.

“To be honest there’s no rift between me and either of my parents.” Elsewhere Katie has recently fumed about not being invited to her daughter’s 18th birthday celebrations and claimed she jetted off to Ibiza to get away from it all.

Katie said in her podcast: “The reason is because Pete doesn’t want to be in the same room as me because I’m his ex.

“Well, we need to have some home truths here; when the kids get older and they get married is he still going to have the same attitude that only one parent can be there, because I disagree.”

Myleene Klass’ ex hits back after cheating claim saying he hasn’t seen kids in years

Friends of Mylenne Klass’ ex husband Graham Quinn have spoken out and refuted claims made by the former pop star that he cheated on her with a well known celebrity

Friends of Graham Quinn have hit back at claims he cheated on his then-partner Myleene Klass. The pair split in 2013 but now 12 years later, talk about Myleene’s former relationship with the security manager has resurfaced.

The singer turned TV personality has alleged that she caught him cheating on her with a well known celebrity, with the alleged affair reportedly occuring just before the couple tied the knot in 2011.

Myleene, 47, shot to fame after appearing on reality TV show Popstars and went on to become a member of Hear’Say. Speaking on a podcast, the Loose Women panellist claimed that she walked in on Graham and the unknown female “unzipping each other” on the balcony at her birthday party.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, a friend close to the father of two said: “Gray is a private person and is happy leading a quiet life. Despite being fed up to the back teeth with Myleene, he’s not going to dignify these fantasies with a response. He thinks she’s a bully.”

The friend told the publication that they felt the timing of exposing her allegation was “vindictive and calculated”, as it was made during the week of his 51st birthday.

The friend continued: “She knew what she was doing. That woman will do anything for attention and once again she has dragged Gray’s name through the mud to get it.”

Myleene and Graham share two daughters together Ava, 17, and Hero, 13. Despite Graham’s silence over his alleged betrayal, he has recently spoken out about the fact he hasn’t seen his kids in years. Graham, who now works in Ibiza, shared with Fathers4Justice in a recent article: “I haven’t seen my kids in years.”

He continued: “I’ve thrown so much more money at it [trying to see his daughters] and I can’t afford much more. I’ve spent £20,000 and am probably further away from them now than I’ve ever been. It’s like banging my head against a brick wall. I’ve missed so many birthdays and Christmas days. I’ll never get that back.”

He went on to claim that his parents and other members of his family haven’t seen the children too.

At the time of the couple’s split, Graham said that Myleene tried to perpetuate a narrative that her financial stability was rocked while proceeding with their divorce. But now Graham insists that he did not receive a financial settlement.

Article continues below

He alleged: “I got no financial settlement at all. All I got from the sale of the house was the money I’d put in. In fact, we sold it at a loss. My eldest used to say to me, ‘daddy, did you take all of Mummy’s pennies?’ and I’d have to explain no. She got the easiest divorce ever. My lawyer at the time said I could’ve demanded a lot more, but I didn’t want to. It would be taking away from my daughters.”‘

The Mirror has reached out to Myleene for comment.
