Syrian gov’t soldier killed in clashes with Kurd-led SDF in Aleppo province

A government soldier has been killed in clashes with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Aleppo province, Syria’s state news agency, SANA, reports, citing the Ministry of Defence.

The latest eruption of violence between the two sides came on Tuesday in northwestern Syria and cast further doubt over an integration deal signed in March by the armed group and Syria’s interim government as part of efforts to reunite the country, devastated and divided by a 14-year war, after the ouster of longtime leader Bashar al-Assad in December.

The Defence Ministry said on Tuesday that the SDF must abide by that accord and stop targeting government forces, warning that “the continuation of these actions will lead to new consequences”, SANA reported.

However, the March agreement does not specify how the SDF would be merged into Syria’s armed forces. The group has previously said its forces must join as a bloc while the government wants its fighters to join as individuals.

Syria’s fledgling government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, said last week that it would not take part in planned meetings with the SDF in Paris amid mounting tensions.

In the meantime, Syria’s foreign minister and a senior official in the country’s Kurdish administration reportedly met on Tuesday in Damascus, sources from both sides told the AFP news agency.

The SDF was the main force allied with the United States in Syria during fighting that defeated ISIL (ISIS) in 2019.

On Saturday, the group accused government-backed factions of attacking areas in northeastern Syria more than 22 times. It said it had exercised restraint during such “aggressions” but the continuation of attacks “threatens mutual trust and undermines understandings”.

Finding affordable – and high quality – perfumes isn’t always an easy task, but beauty fans have something of an industry secret that ticks both of these boxes: M&S’s own-brand fragrances.

Marks & Spencer’s Discover range of scents has been quietly impressing fragrance snobs for a few years now, going viral on social media and often selling out due to their excellent price (100ml bottles are £10) and lust-worthy scents that are regularly compared to pricier designer offerings.

Now the high street hero has just dropped two new Discover eau de toilettes that are perfect for summer – and you’re going to want to snap them up before they’re gone.

M&S Garden Party Eau de Toilette
One of two new summer fragrances from M&S(Image: M&S)

New to M&S stores and online are Garden Party Eau de Toilette and Summer Blooms Eau de Toilette, both priced at £10 for generous 100ml bottles. Inspired by sun-soaked evenings outside with loved ones, Garden Party describes how ‘a shimmering blend of melon, red berry and marine notes opens the fragrance with a refreshing burst, gently settling into a heart of ylang ylang, lily, and intoxicating gardenia’.

Garden Party’s base notes are vanilla, meringue, patchouli and soft musk, evoking ‘the golden glow of twilight and the sweetness of summer air’.

Summer Blooms, meanwhile, is a warmer, more tropical concoction of dewberry, coconut and orange with heart notes of magnolia and jasmine. The base is one of creamy coconut, musk and patchouli, which M&S says, creates a ‘lingering, sun-kissed finish’ that’s ‘summer, bottled’.

There’s something for all fragrance tastes to be found in the M&S beauty aisles though, from Discover’s trending Sweet Pistachio to cosy Spiced Wood – and all £10.

After another fragrance bargain? Sol de Janeiro has launched what’s being touted as its ‘best yet’ perfume, which perfume lovers are saying is the ideal scent for this week’s heatwave – and there’s a savvy way to snap it up for less. The latest fragrance, Sundays in Rio, usually priced at £24, is a fresh addition to the popular brand’s range.

The fragrance opens with notes of pink pepper, pear and ambrette absolute, then unfolds into a heart of cosy vanilla, orris concrete (which imparts violet-like notes) and ‘Champaca pure jungle essence’ – a powdery white floral with rich honeyed undertones. Its base is built on amber musk and woody upcycled orcanox.

Love Is Blind star Patrick Justus’ life from bizarre job title to $147 fitness course

Love Is Blind UK is welcoming in a new batch of singles to the pods this year, and London-based Patrick Justus is joining the lineup.

Netflix fans will be thrilled to know that Love Is Blind UK season 2 is arriving tomorrow, with a bunch of singletons all hoping to find love on a deeper level. It comes after the success of season 1, which was nominated for a BAFTA.

Married couple Matt and Emma Willis have returned to host the popular dating series, which sees singles who are ready to make the ultimate commitment sent on dates in order to meet their life partner. The twist, however, is that none of these singletons are allowed to know what their future spouse will look like, only getting to see them once they have become engaged.

This year’s line-up on Netflix includes a member of Mensa, a professional musician and even a member of the armed forces. One cast member with a particularly intriguing profession is London-based coach Patrick Justus.

PSG Sign Ukrainian Defender Illia Zabarnyi From Bournemouth

European champions Paris Saint-Germain said on Tuesday they have signed Ukrainian centre-back Illia Zabarnyi from Premier League club Bournemouth.

British media reports said the deal was worth around £57 million ($76.7 million, 66 million euros).

“Paris Saint-Germain are excited to welcome Illia Zabarnyi,” PSG said in a statement, adding he would be the first Ukrainian ever to play for the club.

The arrival of Zabarnyi, 22, could jeopardise the place of Brazilian stalwart Marquinhos in the starting lineup.

Zabarnyi had an impressive 2024-2025 season in England when Bournemouth finished ninth and the club’s supporters voted him their player of the season in the previous campaign.

Bournemouth have now sold three of their first-choice defensive lineup from last season after Milos Kerkez moved to Premier League champions Liverpool and Dean Huijsen was transferred to Real Madrid.

Qatar-owned PSG, who thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 to win the Champions League for the first time in May, also signed highly-rated Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier last Saturday, a move that appears to herald the possible departure of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Italian international ‘keeper has not been included in the squad for Wednesday’s European Super Cup final against Europa League winners Tottenham in Italy.

The absence of the 26-year-old, who was outstanding in PSG’s march to European glory, could ignite interest from the Premier League heavyweights.

Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly both interested.

How a student’s death in Mexico raises questions about police violence

A tradition of protest

Mactumatza, the school Vasquez attended, is located on the outskirts of the city, not far from the highway where he died.

It is part of a nationwide network of government-funded normal schools, also known as teacher training colleges, where low-income students can enjoy free tuition and board.

Mexico’s history of normal schools stretches all the way back to the 1910s and 1920s, when the country was emerging from its revolutionary period. Many of the schools’ curriculums emphasise social justice, and students are encouraged to take jobs in underserved communities.

But that revolutionary spirit has also made the normal schools hotbeds for activism. “Normalistas”, as the students are called, have a long tradition of protest.

Sometimes they block highways. Other times, they occupy toll booths. One of their most famous activities is the nonviolent commandeering of local buses: The practice is so common that many bus drivers know to simply step aside when their vehicle is boarded.

Professor Tanalis Padilla, a historian at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said the public reaction to such protests has been mixed. Some people support the students wholeheartedly. Others, she said, express annoyance at “the radical kids out there again on the streets”.

According to Padilla, negative news coverage has contributed to that scepticism. “It’s safe to say the media has always been against them, calling them vandals and things like that.”

Padilla explained that this perception stems from the educational programme at the normal schools, which is rooted in socialist and collectivist politics.

“With the Cold War in the ’70s and ’80s, the media would portray the schools as hotbeds of radicalism and social disturbance,” she said.

Over the years, numerous normalista protests have culminated in violent clashes with police — and even death.

The most infamous incident took place in September 2014, when 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ College, another normal school, took over a bus in the state of Guerrero. They planned to use it to join a protest in Mexico City.

What happened next remains unclear. But it is believed that the students were kidnapped and killed with the knowledge of local law enforcement.

Not a single one of the students was ever seen alive again. Charred remains belonging to three of the Ayotzinapa students were later identified using DNA testing.

The Ayotzinapa case garnered widespread outrage and support for normalistas in Mexico and abroad.

Mills cannot have OnlyFans logo on bat in Hundred

England fast bowler Tymal Mills will not be allowed to display a logo promoting his OnlyFans account on his bat during The Hundred.

The subscription website is known for hosting adult content but Mills – the leading all-time men’s wicket taker in The Hundred – says the material on his channel is “completely safe”.

When announcing he had joined the platform last week, the left-arm fast bowler said his content would give subscribers “a closer, more personal look into life as a professional cricketer”, adding it is “all about sharing my passion with you in a new way”.

Mills, who was part of the England squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2022, has not displayed the logo in his two appearances in The Hundred so far this season.

He would require approval from the England and Wales Cricket Board to do so, which will not be forthcoming.

BBC Sport has been told OnlyFans does not align with the family-friendly nature of The Hundred and Mills is said to understand the decision.

The 33-year-old starred in Southern Brave’s opening Hundred match last week, taking 3-22 and then scoring a vital six runs as they sealed a one-wicket victory over Manchester Originals.

In May, a British canoeist was banned from competing and says he is being forced to choose between his Olympic dream and his OnlyFans account.

What is OnlyFans?

By BBC Sport’s Ask Me Anything team

OnlyFans is an online platform where people create content (photos, videos and live streams), which can be monetised.

Users can pay for monthly subscriptions, tips and pay-per-view for the service, which is known for hosting sexually explicit material, although it is not exclusively a platform for adult content.
