FG To Improve Land Titling To Increase Collateral Value

As part of efforts to unlock the economic power of land in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has announced plans to improve land title to 50 percent in the next ten years.

The minister in charge, Ahmed Dangiwa, made this known during a workshop exercise on land titling registration and documentation programme in Lagos on Tuesday.

The minister said the initiative was aimed at modernising land administration, and making land a viable asset for wealth creation, house delivery and inclusive growth. He added that states would retain full control over land administration amid the initiative.

Dangiwa said over 97 percent of lands in Nigeria are not formally titled, limiting their use as collateral for loans and their value in property transactions.

He added that with this initiative, states can now commence digitisation of land registries, integrate geographic information systems and adopt global best practices, which have already been implemented in Lagos State.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was also at the event, commended the Federal Government for the initiative to unlock the economic power of lands.

Sanwo-Olu said electronic land documentation is the only way forward to reduce physical interference and build a future where land rights are secured.

Trump threatens ‘major lawsuit’ against Federal Reserve Chief Jerome Powell

United States President Donald Trump has suggested that Federal Reserve Chief Jerome Powell could face a lawsuit over renovation costs for the central bank’s nearly century-old headquarters.

The threat, issued on Tuesday in a post on Truth Social, is the latest salvo in Trump’s ongoing pressure campaign against the central bank leader.

The two have clashed over interest rates: Trump has pushed for aggressive cuts, while Powell has maintained the bank will make a decision based on financial indicators, not political pressure.

“Jerome ‘Too Late’ Powell must NOW lower the rate,” Trump wrote in Tuesday’s message. “I am, though, considering allowing a major lawsuit against Powell to proceed because of the horrible, and grossly incompetent, job he has done in managing the construction of the Fed Buildings.”

The president’s attacks on Powell have become a source of concern for economic observers, who worry that Trump is attempting to undermine the independence of the central bank and bring it into closer alignment with his political priorities.

Trump has latched onto cost overruns stemming from construction work at the bank’s headquarters in Washington, DC, which he said points to Powell’s “incompetence”.

The Federal Reserve is currently undergoing renovations on two of its historic buildings, both built in the 1930s, including asbestos removal, major structural work to meet modern safety standards, and the replacement of antiquated systems for ventilation, plumbing, electricity and fire detection.

“While periodic work has been done to keep these buildings occupiable, neither building has seen a comprehensive renovation since they were first constructed,” Powell wrote in a letter to the Trump administration on July 17.

“Both buildings were in need of significant structural repairs and other updates to make the buildings safe, healthy, and effective places to work.”

But while the renovation project was initially estimated to cost $1.9bn, that number has increased to around $2.5bn as construction proceeds. Some Republican lawmakers have said they may open an investigation into the increased projected cost, and Trump has used the renovation to push for Powell to step down.

Trump has also pushed strongly for a decrease in rates, dubbing Powell by the nickname “Too Late” for his supposed delays in cutting rates.

Powell’s term as Federal Reserve chair ends in May 2026. Trump, who nominated Powell to the role during his first term, has already suggested he is considering replacing the outgoing chair with a more compliant figure.

“The damage he has done by always being Too Late is incalculable,” Trump said on Tuesday. “Fortunately, the economy is sooo good that we’ve blown through Powell and the complacent Board.”

Powell and economic policymakers at the Federal Reserve, meanwhile, have expressed concern over Trump’s aggressive tariff policy, which they maintain could increase inflation in the coming months.

Data released by the US Labor Department on Tuesday said that consumer inflation had risen 2.7 percent for the 12-month period ending in July. That number was an increase of 0.2 percent over June.

China slaps temporary duties on Canadian canola in ‘gut punch’ move

China has announced preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola imports, a new escalation in the yearlong trade dispute that began with Ottawa’s imposition of tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports last August.

The provisional rate will be set at 75.8 percent, effective from Thursday, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on Tuesday.

Intercontinetal Exchange (ICE) November canola futures RSX5, the global benchmark for canola trading, fell 6.5 percent to a four-month low after the announcement.

“This really came as a surprise and a shock,” said trader Tony Tryhuk of RBC Dominion Securities.

China, the world’s largest importer of canola – also known as rapeseed – sources nearly all of its supplies of the product from Canada. The steep duties would likely all but end imports if they are maintained.

“This is huge. Who will pay a 75 percent deposit to bring Canadian canola to China? It is like telling Canada that we don’t need your canola, thank you very much,” said one Singapore-based oilseed trader.

China’s Ministry of Commerce said on Tuesday that an anti-dumping probe launched in September 2024 had found that Canada’s agricultural sector – particularly the canola industry – had benefitted from “substantial” government subsidies and preferential policies.

China has until September, when the investigation formally ends, to make a final decision on the duties, though it has the option of extending that deadline by six months. A final ruling could result in a different rate, or overturn Tuesday’s decision.

The decision marks a shift from the conciliatory tone struck in June when China Premier Li Qiang said there were no deep-seated conflicts of interest between the countries during a phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

“This move … will put additional pressure on Canada’s government to sort through trade frictions with China,” said Trivium China agriculture analyst Even Rogers Pay.

Canada’s trade, agriculture and the prime minister’s office did not immediately respond to request for comment. The Canadian embassy in Beijing did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

China had already imposed tariffs on canola oil and meal in March. Canada is now in a trade conflict with the world’s two largest economies, as it also faces tariffs on some goods from the United States.

Separately, China also launched an anti-dumping investigation into Canadian pea starch and imposed provisional duties on imports of halogenated butyl rubber, according to ministry statements.

‘Extend the losses’

Replacing millions of tonnes of Canadian canola is likely to be difficult at short notice, say analysts.

China primarily uses imported canola to make animal feed for its aquaculture sector. A separate duty on Canadian canola meal imports in March has already put these supplies at risk.

The move provides an opportunity for Australia, which looks set to regain access to the Chinese market with a few test cargoes this year after a years-long freeze in the trade, Pay said.

Australia, the second-largest canola exporter, has been shut out of the Chinese market since 2020 due mainly to Chinese rules to stop the spread of fungal plant disease called “blackleg”.

However, even if Australian imports increase, “fully replacing Canadian canola will be very difficult unless import demand drops sharply,” said Donatas Jankauskas, an analyst with commodity data firm CM Navigator.

Commodity funds have a substantial long position in ICE canola futures, traders said, which should add fuel to the selloff fire.

“This will help accelerate their exit of that long and could really extend the losses,” said Tryhuk.

Another trader said there was already downward pressure coming into canola prices as Canada’s crop is widely believed to be bigger than many previously forecast due to good weather.

“We’re just realising we’ve got a better crop that’s about to come off,” said the trader. “This is a gut punch no one was expecting.”

Ventum Financial broker David Derwin said some traders do not know how to take the Chinese move yet, since it is not a final rule.

Man City’s Grealish Joins Everton On Season-Long Loan

Manchester City winger Jack Grealish joined Everton on loan for the 2025-26 season on Tuesday in a bid to salvage his troubled career.

Grealish fell out of favour with City boss Pep Guardiola last season and made just seven starts in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old was left out of City’s squad for the Club World Cup in the United States in a clear indication that he was no longer wanted by Guardiola.

Everton’s deal for Grealish, who earns a reported £300,000 ($402,000) per week, comes just before the new Premier League campaign starts for the Toffees at Leeds on August 18.

“I’m over the moon to have signed for Everton – it’s massive for me, honestly. This is a great club, with great fans,” Grealish said.

Grealish has chosen the number 18 shirt at Everton in tribute to Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne, who wore it during their time with the club.

“My two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore number 18 here,” he said.

“I spoke to Wayne before I came here and I mentioned that to him – about the number 18 – so I hope he’s happy as well.”

Grealish joined City from Aston Villa in 2021 for a then British record fee of £100 million.

The England international has won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup with City, but his form had dipped significantly since he played a key role in the 2022-23 treble-winning campaign.

‘Only one place I wanted to go’

He was left out of England’s Euro 2024 squad, an omission that left him “heartbroken”.

Guardiola rarely picked Grealish last season despite City’s struggles and he was left on the bench for the shock FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace.

Amid concerns about his personal life after repeated reports of alcohol-fuelled late nights, Grealish will have a chance to revive his spluttering career at Everton and potentially earn a recall to the England squad ahead of next year’s World Cup.

“As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go,” Grealish said.

“On social media, I’ve been flooded with messages from Everton supporters, so there’s that side of it as well and that’s another reason why I chose Everton.

“I want to say thank you to the fans for all of the messages I’ve had already. Thank you for all of the love and support. I hope I can repay you now and I’m sure I will.”

Everton recently left Goodison Park to move into their new Hill Dickinson stadium ahead of the season, with Grealish set to take centre stage in the plush arena.

He ranks as Everton’s biggest signing since the end of last season after a quiet summer in the transfer market for boss David Moyes.

“We welcome Jack to Everton and we’re very pleased to have him on board,” Moyes said.

“I think we’re getting him at a good time because he’s experienced, he understands the Premier League and we’re all fully aware of the levels he’s capable of performing to.

“I know Jack’s ambition is to get back into the England squad, so hopefully we can help him achieve that over the course of the season.”

Everton complete loan deal for Man City’s Grealish

Jack Grealish says “there is only one place he wanted to go” after signing for Everton on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

The 29-year-old becomes Everton’s sixth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Charly Alcaraz, Thierno Barry, Mark Travers and Adam Aznou.

He says talks with Toffees manager David Moyes were decisive in him choosing to move to Hill Dickinson Stadium.

“I’m over the moon to have signed for Everton – it’s massive for me, honestly. This is a great club, with great fans,” said the England winger.

“As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go. On social media, I’ve been flooded with messages from Everton supporters, so there’s that side of it as well and that’s another reason why I chose Everton.

“I want to say thank you to the fans for all of the messages I’ve had already. Thank you for all of the love and support. I hope I can repay you now and I’m sure I will.”

The England playmaker joined City from Aston Villa for what was a British record fee of £100m in August 2021 and has made more than 150 appearances for the club – winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup.

But he fell out of favour last season, making only seven league starts before being left out of their squad for the Club World Cup in the United States.

A move to Everton gives him the chance to rejuvenate his career and take centre stage at their new stadium.

Grealish will also be aiming to win his place back in the England squad – something Moyes hopes Everton can help him achieve – after saying last summer he was “heartbroken” by being left out of the squad for the 2024 European Championship.

Everton boss Moyes said: “I think we’re getting him at a good time because he’s experienced, he understands the Premier League and we’re all fully aware of the levels he’s capable of performing to.

Grealish to follow Rooney and Gascoigne

Grealish will wear the number 18 shirt and says he chose that number so he could emulate two of his favourite players.

“There is a reason [for choosing number 18],” said Grealish. “There were other numbers but my two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore number 18 here.

“So, as soon as I knew this deal was close, I had a look and number 18 was free, so that was perfect for me and it was the only number I was going to take from that point.

Where will Grealish play at Everton?

Matthew Hobbs, BBC Sport:

Jack Grealish’s signature is a real coup for David Moyes, but will the 29-year-old be more effective on the left or in a central role for the Toffees?

According to Opta, Moyes commonly employed a 4-2-3-1 formation in the Premier League after returning to Goodison Park last season, doing so 11 times in 19 matches and only really deviating when a back three was used instead.

Grealish has predominantly had a left-sided role during his top-flight career, spending 80% of his 5,698 Premier League playing minutes on the left wing at Manchester City.

In the top flight at Aston Villa, he played on the left 64% of the time, and 20% at number 10.

While Grealish is a statement signing sure to excite supporters, it does create an imbalance in Everton’s squad, with the search for a right-winger so far unsuccessful.

Iliman Ndiaye played 2,350 minutes on the left wing last term and finished as the club’s top scorer, while Dwight McNeil has also been a key performer in that role.

Should Grealish start on the left it may mean Ndiaye, McNeil and summer signing Carlos Alcaraz competing for the number 10 berth – or one playing out of position until a natural right-winger is recruited.
