Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,251

On Tuesday, July 29, 2018, this is how things are going.

Fighting

  • Eight people were hurt when a four-year-old girl was reportedly killed by a Russian drone attack on a 25-story residential building in Kyiv, according to Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the city’s military administration.
  • According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the overnight attack was one of “324 drones, four cruise missiles, and three ballistic missiles” that the country was sending across. According to the Air Force, the attack focused on Starokostiantyniv, a significant air base.
  • The Air Force of Ukraine reported that it had shot down 309 drones and two missiles, and that 15 of those drones and two missiles had struck targets in three different locations, without naming a specific location. Local authorities in Kropyvnytskyi, central Ukraine, reported that no injuries had been reported despite the attack starting a fire.
  • A Ukrainian air base and a depot with missile and component stockpiles were hit, according to the Russian government’s ministry of defense.
  • As Russian missiles reportedly entered western Ukraine, close to the Polish border, Polish and allies’ aircraft were activated on Monday, according to the Polish military’s Operational Command.
  • According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian troops have taken control of the eastern Ukrainian settlements of Boikivka and Belhiika.
  • After two pro-Ukraine hacking groups alleged to have carried out a massive cyberattack on the Russian national airline, Aeroflot was forced to cancel more than 50 round-trip flights on Monday, causing delays in travel across the nation.

diplomacy and politics

Russia must reach a peace agreement in its conflict with Ukraine by the end of “10 or 12 days,” according to US President Donald Trump, or it will be subject to severe new sanctions.

  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, praised Trump for “taking a clear stance” and thanked him for “striving lives and ending this horrible war.”
  • Dmitry Medvedev, the ex-President of Russia, claimed on Monday that the US-EU framework trade agreement was “anti-Russian,” referring to it as a de facto ban on buying Russian oil and gas.

Weapons and military assistance

  • Andrius Kubilius, the EU’s commissioner for space and defense, informed European news website Euractiv that non-EU nations, including Ukraine, could join the EU’s secure communication satellite network IRIS2. The Ukrainian military relied on Starlink, which Elon Musk had used for telecommunications services during the war, to provide an alternative to the EU system.
  • According to the Kyiv Independent media outlet, the Defense Procurement Agency of Ukraine increased its share of domestically produced weapons to more than 71% in the first half of 2025.

Did the EU capitulate to Donald Trump’s tariff threats?

In Europe, the announcement of a trade agreement in Scotland has received mixed reviews.

According to the US and EU, a trade agreement has been reached.

There are promises for significant US energy and weapons contracts, and it will impose 15% tariffs on the EU, but not on the US.

Supporters of the EU claim it prevents a trade war. It is described as a capitulation by critics.

Who then wins?

Sharon Osbourne’s family, along with Ozzy Osbourne’s wife, announced last week that the musician had passed away at the age of 76, just weeks after his farewell concert, including his wife.

The late Ozzy Osbourne has been the subject of yet more tributes following the news of his death almost a week ago. Fans have shared that they continue to mourn the Black Sabbath member this week ahead of his funeral.

Ozzy’s family announced last Tuesday that the singer-songwriter had died, aged 76, that morning, with his wife Sharon Osbourne, 72, and four of his children issuing a joint statement at the time. There was then an outpouring of tributes to him, including from his former bandmates.

The verified account for Ozzy on Instagram has continued to post about him since the news broke, including in a tribute uploaded earlier today. It shared a photo that showed a logo of Ozzy’s name above a black candle with a flame on top. The caption simply included an emoji depicting a candle.

The song Holy For Tonight, which was included in the post, was accompanied by the photo and its caption. Ozzy co-wrote the song, which was included on his second most recent album, Ordinary Man, which came out in 2020.

Since posting this afternoon’s post, more than 220 000 people have viewed it. Some fans addressed the loss in the comments section after almost a week since “The Prince of Darkness” passed away.

We will forever miss you, a person wrote. Another person expressed surprise that it had been almost a week. While another person said, “It still hasn’t sunk in.” Another fan wrote this evening, “Still doesn’t seem real,” while sharing their thoughts.

Someone wrote, “Thank you for everything, Ozzy, I still can’t believe you’re gone.” You’ll forever be in our hearts, Ozzy, according to a person who responded to the post. Another wrote earlier today, “Love you Ozzy, I’m still in shock that you’re gone.” I appreciate your music.

One fan expressed his shock at how drastically Sharon, his children, and his grandchildren have been left. They are my thoughts and prayers. “Light and love be with everyone in the family,” another person wrote in response.

Ozzy’s death was announced last week by relatives including his wife Sharon. She issued a statement alongside their three children Aimee Osbourne, Jack Osbourne and Kelly Osbourne, as well as Ozzy’s eldest son Louis Osbourne.

Our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning, according to them, with more sadness than words can express. He was surrounded by love and his family. At this time, we ask that everyone respects our family’s privacy. Jack, Kelly, Aimee, and Louis, among others.

Just weeks before his death, Ozzy had performed at a farewell concert in Birmingham as part of Black Sabbath’s original line-up. He took to the stage at Villa Park stadium on July 5 in the star-studded Back to the Beginning concert and the gig is set to be turned into a film to be released next year.

The 1975’s Matty Healy warns of ‘cultural erasure’ as he backs support for small venues

Matty Healy, the 1975 star, supported a new event Seed Sounds Weekender that aims to support small music venues in the UK. He has spoken out against “a class war by omission.”

The 1975 frontman Matty Healy has thrown his support behind a small venue event as he warns of “cultural erasure”. The singer has backed a new festival which aims to support small music venues as they struggle to survive.

The Seed Sounds Weekender will take place on 26 to 28 September will see more than 2,000 gigs take place in more than 1,000 venues in an attempt to unite small venues. In response to the event, Glastonbury headliner Matty said: “The political neglect behind this crisis, steadily hollowing out arts funding and cultural infrastructure is a class war by omission.

Over the past ten years, councils across England have reduced arts budgets by 20% to 30%. This ecosystem collapses without government-led reforms like a stipulated stadium and arena ticket levy, a new stadium-and-arena ticket levy, a new business rate reform, and real investment in venue survival.

The UK music industry contributes £5.2 billion to the economy, supports 228, 000 jobs, and exports its soft power globally, he continued, adding that the 150-room above-barkroom rooms are where the entire pipeline of revenue originates.

Lose them, and you are losing the conditions that made everything possible, not just venues. That is cultural erasure, and it will not persist.

This festival isn’t just a celebration; it’s about uniting and supporting this network, making sure that Britain’s distinctive, musical heartbeat keeps beating, and that’s why movements like the Seed Sounds Weekender are so important.

In its annual report, The Music Venue Trust warned that 42.1% of its members reported “financial issues,” while 22.4% of venues shut down as a result of “operational issues” in 2023.

Last month, the music scene was rocked by the closure of the Leadmill in Sheffield, which was a well-known and loved venue in the city. It lost a long-running eviction battle with its landlord, the Electric Group.

Events taking place in 20 UK towns and cities will be mostly free at Seed Sounds Weekender’s gigs. Local venues are the foundation of our culture, according to Matty, not just where bands eat their teeth.

You get silence if you don’t get The Smiths, Idles, Little Simz, or Wet Leg without them. Over 1,200 of the UK’s grassroots music venues have been closed, and 38% of those venues have since been shut down, and this is frightening. 125 venues shut down alone in 2023, and two are closing each month right now.

These rooms “just barely manage to survive,” with nearly 44% operating at a loss and a profit margin of just 0.5% (under £3, 000 annually). Live music is essentially subventioned by the industry by £162 million annually.

That results in communities losing their only obtainable creative spaces, including those in working-class towns, inner cities, and regional centers. The only art that succeeds when that occurs is one that has been financially supported, safe, sanitized, and profitable. The privileged no longer have access to art.

Raducanu wins Montreal opener but Boulter exits

Emma Raducanu, the British no. 1, won the Canadian Open 6-3, continuing her excellent form there.

The 22-year-old continued that momentum into her match with Romania’s Ruse, who won 6-2, 6-4, after making it to the semi-finals of the Washington Open last week.

In the second round, she will face American Peyton Stearns, who is 32nd seed.

However, fellow Briton Renata Zarazua, who is from Mexico, lost 6-1 7-5 to Katie Boulter at the first hurdle.

As Raducanu prepares for the US Open, her final grand prix, and the event she won in 2021, in New York between August 24 and September 7, she has found her rhythm on the hard courts.

On Sky Sports, Raducanu said, “It’s difficult to play someone you know, but I’m happy with how I put that to one side.”

In her opening service game, the Briton showed resilience by surviving five set pieces.

She then won five games in a row to finish off the opening set in style.

Raducanu, who also defeated Ruse in Auckland in 2024, found the crucial break to take the match 5-4 after a few break breaks in the second set.

Raducanu has won four hard-court matches in five appearances, including a defeat to Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon earlier in July.

Fifth-round waiting for Amanda Anisimova, the 2025 Wimbledon finalist, in Montreal if she defeats Stearns.

Boulter managed to save two set points to make it 5-1 before quickly wrapping up the opener when the Mexican was back on serve.

Brooklyn Beckham issues ‘financial flex’ over dad David as he cosies up to father-in-law

Brooklyn Beckham, the husband of hot sauce founder, has been taking vacations with his wife Nicola Peltz’s family as he keeps from seeing his famous parents, David and Victoria Beckham, who are both famous.

Brooklyn Beckham’s fallout with his famous mum and dad shows no signs of slowing down as he appears to reap the benefits of his billionaire father-in-law. The hot sauce founder, 26, has been locked in a family fallout with David and Victoria Beckham as he continued to stand with his wife Nicola Peltz.

Since Brooklyn and Nicola skipped David’s 50th birthday celebrations in May, things haven’t been so rosy between the Beckhams. Father’s Day and David’s long-awaited knighthood accomplishments continued with a string of snubs from Brooke.

The fallout seems to have spilled down the family as both Brooklyn’s younger brothers Romeo and Cruz have unfollowed him on social media. Brooklyn appears to be surrounding himself with his in-laws amid the drama and has even headed on holiday with them.

Nicola’s father has given her a huge vessel for the past two years, making it possible for them to travel.

He sailed into Saint-Tropez on a £85million, 80 metre yacht called Project X as he lapped up the luxury getaway. It had been rented by Nicola’s parents, Nelson and Claudia Peltz, and set them back a staggering £1.2million a week.

Brooklyn avoided a run in with his parents as they arrived in the same French dock just two days later – which he reportedly was unaware of. They turned up on a £16million, 40 metre vessel named Seven.

“Brooklyn’s yacht dwarfs the one owned by David and Victoria. It’s a financial flex,” a source told the Sun. “Their relationship is beyond soured now but Brooklyn has really landed on his feet.

“Nicola and her parents, Nelson and Claudia, are his family now. And he’s clearly enjoying the spoils.” David and Victoria, who own their yacht that’s half the size of Brooklyn’s in-laws rented boat, are in Saint-Tropez with their sons Romeo and Cruz as well as daughter Harper.

Brooklyn was unaware that David and Victoria were arriving in Saint-Tropez two days later, according to a source who informed the Mirror. They continued, “The couple had a wonderful time and appreciated Nelson’s hospitality.”

Brooklyn, meanwhile, has been keen to share snaps of his own trip as he drank a bottle of beer next to Nelson. One moment showed Brooklyn leaning towards Nelson, who had his arm around his son-in-law, whilst another showed the in-laws embraced in a hug by a table.

Brooklyn has attracted attention over spending time with his in-laws lately amid claims he “doesn’t really feel like he fits into” his own family. A source told the Mirror that he’s also grown “so close” to Nicola’s family.

They claimed that “he just doesn’t feel like he fits into the Beckham family right now because his family has treated Nicola well.”

Amid rumours of tension between Brooklyn and his parents, he is said to have met up with godfather Sir Elton John, who tried to act as “peacemaker”. He is said to have caught up with Brooklyn and Nicola over lunch in Cannes.

Elton is said to “adore” Brooklyn and have a “laugh” with Nicola, who he believes has a “great” sense of humour. A source told the Sun: “[Elton’s] utterly neutral in this row. Elton and David think the situation is terribly sad, and has gently suggested to all involved that life is short – and to patch things up.” The source said that the group had a “really fun long lunch” despite the tough conversation.

The Mirror has contacted Brooklyn’s representatives for comment.
