UK’s Palestine Action loses bid to pause ban as ‘terrorist’ group

Pro-Palestinian campaign group Palestine Action‘s cofounder has lost a bid to pause the British government’s decision to ban the organisation under “anti-terrorism” laws pending their legal challenge.

Huda Ammori, who helped found Palestine Action in 2020, had asked London’s High Court to stop the proscription of Palestine Action as a “terrorist” organisation.

On Friday, the court heard a challenge to the order, and Judge Martin Chamberlain ruled against Ammori, meaning the proscription of Palestine Action is upheld and will come into force at midnight.

The proscription came after British lawmakers this week decided to ban Palestine Action after its activists broke into a military base last month and sprayed red paint on two planes in protest at the UK’s support for Israel’s war on Gaza.

Proscription would make it a crime to be a member of Palestine Action that carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Proscribed groups under British law include ISIL (ISIS) and al-Qaeda.

Ammori’s lawyer Raza Husain said the proscription marked the first time the UK had sought to ban a group carrying out such direct action, describing it as “an ill-considered, discriminatory, authoritarian abuse of statutory power”.

Protesters gathered outside the UK’s Royal Court of Justice during Friday’s ruling. Police swarmed the crowd, but Palestine Action said that its protests will not stop.

After the parliamentary vote against the group on Wednesday, critics decried the chilling effect of the ban, which puts Palestine Action on a par with armed groups like ISIL and al-Qaeda.

“Let us be clear: to equate a spray can of paint with a suicide bomb isn’t just absurd, it is grotesque. It is a deliberate distortion of the law to chill dissent, criminalise solidarity, and suppress the truth,” said independent British lawmaker Zarah Sultana.

‘Draconian, silly move’

Brendon Ciaran Browne, associate professor at Trinity College Dublin, told Al Jazeera the UK government’s decision is “absolutely absurd”.

“Essentially, what we’re witnessing here, is an attempt to enforce a chill effect on everyone who is absolutely abhorred by the UK government’s complicity [in Israel’s war on Gaza] and their flagrant breaches of international law that we have seen now for the best part of 21 months,” he said on Friday.

Referring to Palestine Action’s stunt at a British military base, Browne noted that the UK government has existing legislation to deal with this.

“Those who are allegedly involved can be charged with criminal damage. There are other ways to do this. But what you’re seeing here is the UK government again using the terrorism act to target those who are engaged in direct action … This is a draconian, silly move by the UK government,” he added.

Palestine Action describes itself as “a pro-Palestinian organisation which disrupts the arms industry in the United Kingdom with direct action”. It says it is “committed to ending global participation in Israel’s genocidal and apartheid regime”.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, the UK’s interior minister, has said that violence and criminal damage have no place in legitimate protest, and her lawyers say the case should be brought at the Proscribed Organisations Appeal Commission instead.

Rashford, Garnacho, Sancho, Two Others Inform Man Utd Of Exit

Marcus Rashford, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia, and Jadon Sancho have informed Manchester United that they want no part in the clubside in the coming season.

The players had fallen down the pecking order with the arrival of Ruben Amorim in November last year.

The news of their planned departure was announced by sports journalist Fabrizio Romano on his official X platform on Friday.

”BREAKING: Marcus Rashford, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia, and Jadon Sancho have all informed Manchester United they wish to leave. ”

”Man Utd have delayed their return date until later in July to allow them time to explore solutions further,” the message read

United has revealed that the quintet would still have access to the training facilities should they find it difficult to find a new club within the coming weeks

Rashford, who spent the second half of last season on loan at  Aston Villa, has had his No. 10 jersey handed over to the new £62. 5million signing Matheus Cunha, further deepening the rift between both parties

On the other hand, Sancho failed to secure a permanent deal with the London side, Chelsea, after conversations over his wages stalled. The Blues opted to pay a £5m penalty rather than secure him for   £25m.

Garnacho was advised by the Portuguese to find a new club after he was visibly upset about being benched in the European Cup final against Tottenham.

Antony, who enjoyed a new zest for his career at Real Betis in the second half of last season, has seen the Spanish side considering another loan spell with an obligation to buy for a fee of £30m.

Oasis support act Cast halt performance for touching Diogo Jota tribute

Cast have halted their performance on the Oasis tour to share a moving tribute to the late Diogo Jota.

While on stage, Liverpudlian singer John Power dedicated their track Walkaway to the late Liverpool FC footballer, Diogo, who died on Thursday. He said “This is Walkaway. This one is for Diogo Jota. Take it easy brother. “

The footballer and his brother tragically died after a fatal car crash in Spain, just ten days after he married his wife, Rute Cardoso.

Diogo and his brother Andre spun off the road before their car caught fire. One of the tyres had blown out while overtaking another car on the A-52, around 70 miles west of Valladolid, causing it to veer off the road. The incident occurred at around 12. 40am. The blaze had spread to nearby vegetation which was eventually put out by firefighters, with the assistance from the Civil Guard.

Medical officials later confirmed the death of the two occupants of the car shortly after arriving on the scene.

Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho are among five players to have informed Manchester United they want to leave the club.

Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia are also looking for a move away, with United allowing all five more time to explore their future options by delaying their pre-season return until later this month.

BBC Sport has been told the club will welcome the players back to Carrington if their futures are not resolved, allowing them access to medical and training support.

Rashford had previously indicated a willingness to return for the start of United’s pre-season preparations on Monday.

The 27-year-old England forward was exiled by manager Ruben Amorim in December and spent the second half of the season on loan at Aston Villa.

Amorim had also told Garnacho, 21, he will be allowed to join a new club in the summer after the Argentine was left out of the squad for their final game of the Premier League season.

Sancho, meanwhile, returned to Old Trafford after Chelsea paid a £5m penalty not to sign him on a permanent basis following a season on loan at Stamford Bridge.

Brazil winger Antony was on loan at La Liga side Real Betis last season, while defender Malacia spent the second half of the previous campaign at PSV Eindhoven.

Cunha given Rashford’s number 10 shirt

Brazil forward Matheus Cunha will wear the number 10 shirt at Old Trafford next season, having completed a £62. 5m move from Wolves last month.

Rashford had worn the number since 2018 after inheriting it from former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But with the English forward’s future uncertain, the club have handed it to Cunha, who has signed a five-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months.

It is understood United made Rashford aware of the decision in advance. The club value him at £40m but are yet to receive any bids for the forward.

In February Amorim said he “couldn’t get Marcus to see the way you’re supposed to play football and to train the way I see it”.

Rashford, who has scored 138 goals in 426 senior games during 20 years with United, said last month he would like to play alongside forward Lamine Yamal at Barcelona.

Defending doubles champions Patten and Heliovaara beat Harris and Willis

Wimbledon 2025

Venue: All England Club Dates: 30 June-13 July

Defending champions Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara continued their pursuit of back-to-back Wimbledon men’s doubles titles with victory over British pair Billy Harris and Marcus Willis.

Briton Patten and his Finnish partner Heliovaara came out on top 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 on another hot day at SW19 to progress to the third round.

They have now knocked out two British pairings in as many matches, with victory over Dan Evans and Henry Searle in round one.

Hunting a third Grand Slam title at their fifth major, the partnership is already proving to be effective, having only joined up in April last year.

They took one hour and 20 minutes to move past Willis and Harris, whose best run in the singles draw ended in the second round on Thursday, with Patten’s accurate overhead smashes and strong serving proving useful.

Patten and Heliovaara took the first set after a tightly contested tie-break before a break to love on the Harris serve was enough for the second seeds to see out victory.

Patten then partnered compatriot Olivia Nicholls to beat Argentina’s Andres Molteni and American Asia Muhammad 6-3 6-4 as the mixed doubles got under way at the All England Club.

The opening round featured plenty of British interest with success for Joshua Paris and Eden Silva as they ran out 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-5) winners against Dutch pair Sander Arends and Demi Schuurs.

Oasis are officially back together and will be performing their first show of the highly anticipated reunion tonight. Noel and Liam Gallagher put their differences aside for the sake of their fans as they are due to perform in Cardiff tonight.

The reunion tour was announced last year which was met with thousands of fans trying to get their hands on a ticket. But the wait it now over as those who were lucky enough to get a ticket will see the brothers get back together for the first time since the band split in 2009.

However, many have been left wondering as to what they can really expect during the tour. Here’s everything you need to know about Oasis getting back together.
