Calls for US to sanction Israeli settlers after Palestinian activist killed

A spokesperson for the State Department in Washington, DC, has been questioned regarding the alleged murder of Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen by an Israeli settler that the US government had previously approved.

State Department spokesman Tammy Bruce slammed when asked if Yinon Levi, the suspect in the death of Hathaleen, would be held accountable at a news briefing on Tuesday.

According to Bruce, “Israel has investigations that it’s implementing regarding situations of this kind.” I won’t comment or speculate on what will happen, nor do I know what the outcome will be.

One day after video that showed Levi firing on Hathaleen in the occupied West Bank surfaced, Bruce had a heated exchange with reporters in the village of Umm al-Kheir.

Later, the Palestinian activist, 31, died from a gunshot wound to his chest.

Levi is one of several Israeli settlers in the West Bank who was previously imprisoned for attacking Palestinians under the former US President Joe Biden.

However, shortly after taking office for a second term in January, President Donald Trump reversed those restrictions in an executive order. However, Levi is still subject to sanctions from the UK and the European Union.

Hathaleen, a resident of Masafer Yatta, was the director of the Academy Award-winning documentary No Other Land, which explored the effects of Israeli settlements, which are against international law, and Palestinian attacks in the West Bank.

Bruce made an appearance that Hathaleen’s shooting took place in the “war zone” of Gaza in Tuesday’s news briefing before being corroborated.

She continued, saying that wherever violence took place, the Trump administration made an effort to stop it.

“It’s the same argument,” the statement read. In the West Bank, we can see this. We are generally aware of when there is violence. We also witnessed a shooting in New York City yesterday, she said, making no mention of an unrelated shooting in a Manhattan skyscraper.

According to an Al Jazeera request, the State Department did not respond to the State Department’s request to know whether the Trump administration would change its sanctions strategy in light of the killing.

Levi was put on house arrest after being charged with manslaughter and using an illegal firearm, according to Israeli media on Tuesday.

Trump and illegal settlements

Hathaleen was a father of three who worked closely with a number of powerful advocacy and lobbying organizations in the US before passing, raising questions about Trump’s policies toward illegal Israeli settlements in occupied West Bank.

Trump overturned a long-standing rule that declared settlements to be unlawful during his first term. These settlements are prohibited by international law and are frequently used as a means of evicting Palestinians and seizing their land.

However, Israeli settlement growth has remained rapid in recent years, posing a major obstacle to upcoming peace agreements with Palestinian leaders.

Trump removed numerous executive orders from the administration, including those imposing sanctions on Israeli settlers, earlier this year. Apparently, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government was under pressure to make the move.

Despite being criticized for continuing to aid Israel in the wake of its conflict in Gaza during his term, Biden’s administration showed a willingness to take a tougher stance when it came to settling in the occupied West Bank.

According to Biden’s executive order, which was dated February 2024, “the situation in the West Bank has reached intolerable levels,” in particular, high levels of extremist settler violence, forced displacement of people and villages, and property destruction.

Israel’s actions in the West Bank “present a serious threat to the stability, security, and stability of the West Bank, Gaza, Israel, and the Middle East as a whole,” the statement continued.

Since Israel’s war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, with at least 1, 000 Palestinians killed in the West Bank, violence has risen among Israeli settlers and military forces.

According to rights advocates, the military frequently protects armed settlers who attack Palestinians.

US citizens have been killed, most recently Sayfollah Musallet, a 20-year-old Florida resident who was shot to death while visiting his family’s property in the Sinjil village.

US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, a vocal supporter of Israeli settlements, called on Israel to “aggressively investigate” what he termed an “criminal and terrorist act” in a rare statement condemning Musallet’s killing.

No one has been detained or charged with the murder to date.

Following Monday’s attack, a left-leaning pro-Israel lobbying group called on US lawmakers to support legislation that would codify the Biden-era sanctions against settlers like Levi in a statement following the attack.

The group described Hathaleen as having “deep, personal ties” and that its members were “heartbroken and horrified” by his death.

Delia Ramirez, a member of Congress, wrote in a post on the social media platform X on Tuesday that Hathaleen’s killing “a painful reminder that our government and Israel continue to support and condone violence in the West Bank.”

Gov Sani Sacks Information Commissioner, Appoints Ahmed Maiyaki As Replacement

Professor Muhammad Sani-Bello, the state’s commissioner of information, has been immediately fired by Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State.

Ibraheem Musa, his chief press secretary, made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday.

Ahmed Maiyaki, the managing director of Kaduna State Media Corporation, was appointed as the new commissioner of information by the governor.

He praised the former Commissioner’s contributions to the field of education’s pioneering role and wished Professor Sani Bello the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Governor Sani claims that during the 2023 election, President Bola Ahmed has faithfully kept the campaign promises he made to the north.

READ MORE: Gov Sani’s campaign promises are persistently kept in mind by Tinubu.

Governor Sani stated that Tinubu has supported his administration in addressing the security issues that have plagued the state for a number of years during the opening of a two-day interactive session on government-citizen engagement held by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Kaduna.

He noted that the administration’s pledges, which included those in the areas of security, education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, and inclusion, are being honored by bold, tangible outcomes, adding that despite the additional work that must be done and the distances that must be crossed, the end is in sight.

I was confronted by a defended Kaduna State when I took office as governor in 2023. Our communities are cast a long, shadowy shadow by insecurity. Banditry, kidnapping, violent crime, and terrorism had become daily occurrences from Chikun to Igabi, from the Kaduna-Abuja expressway to Birnin Gwari, and from the troubled southern regions of our beloved state. Fear persisted all over. He claimed that chaos was slowly destroying Kaduna, a country that has long been praised for its resilience and cultural vitality.

The Kaduna-Abuja highway, which was once a bustling center for commerce and movement, had turned into a painful omen of disobedience and a painful representation of governmental failure. As a depressing illustration of the scale of the security crisis, the 2022 Abuja-Kaduna train attack has persisted in our collective consciousness. Kaduna’s very spirit trembled as a result of the weight of fear that was evicted from entire communities, markets shut down, and fear-trunk communities. The hall would have been empty or worse, rendered inaccessible by persistent insecurity, had we attempted to organize this conference in those circumstances in May 2023.

Trump says Israel will ‘preside over’ US aid distribution in Gaza

Israel’s establishment in Gaza has been suggested by US President Donald Trump, which critics claim would further enshrine the Israeli occupation and put a risk on the safety of those seeking aid.

Trump made the claim that Hamas steals food from Gaza, which aid organizations and UN officials have refuted, while speaking to reporters on his presidential jet on Tuesday.

Even Israeli officials have allegedly told The New York Times that there is no evidence Hamas is receiving any food. Trump did, however, make a different suggestion.

“Many things have been taken,” he said. Money is sent by them. Food is delivered. And Hamas steals it, Trump told Air Force One reporters. It’s therefore a challenging little game.

Despite erratic operations that have resulted in Israeli troops firing on hungry Palestinians, he added that he lacked confidence in Israel to handle the distribution of US aid.

“We’re going to have a conversation with Israel,” he declared. And we believe they can do it well, according to Trump. They want to ensure proper distribution at the food centers, according to the president.

The locations and dates for the sites’ establishment are unknown, and Israel has no idea whether to run them through the GHF, a contentious US-backed aid organization that has been accused of unsafe practices.

Trump’s remarks suggest that the US isn’t willing to support the UN and its partners on the ground in resuming aid distribution in Gaza.

Since May, Israel has tightened its blockade of Gaza, allowing food into the area almost exclusively through GHF, which has four locations set up in the area’s south.

Israeli fire, which Israel used to enter or leave GHF centers, has claimed the lives of hundreds of Palestinians.

Numerous people have died from malnutrition as a result of the siege, which has led to an Israeli-imposed hunger crisis in the area.

Witnesses from the Israeli military and GHF have testified to the abuses that have occurred at the foundation’s sites recently.

A US army veteran who worked with GHF, Anthony Aguilar, claimed that the organization had been delivering food in Gaza insufficiently.

He claimed that it has also been used to force Palestinians to flee the southern region because of displacement.

In a video that was posted on social media, Aguilar told Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen, “I’ve seen the Israeli military firing into the crowds of Palestinians, firing over their heads, firing at their feet,” Aguilar said. “Not just with rifles or machine guns, but tanks, tank rounds, artillery, mortars, missiles,” Aguilar said.

He argued that the aid workers were merely used as a means of crowd control because they were “not combatants, because they were hostile, or because they were Hamas.”

Critics claim that setting Israeli troops in charge of distribution centers for food could lead to even more atrocities against aid seekers.

Israel has disputed Hamas propaganda by saying that there isn’t actual hunger in Gaza and that there isn’t.

Trump acknowledged on Monday that the territory is “real starvation,” but he made no remarks about Israel.

Instead, he argued on Tuesday that Israel should play a role in the aid delivery.

Trump told reporters, “I believe Israel wants to do it, and they’ll do it well.”

“They’ll do a good job if they do it, and I think they do it as well if they do it.” The food will be distributed as intended.

He compared any resistance to Israel to a “reward” for Hamas.

He responded to a reporter who inquired about the possibility of the US pushing Israel toward a long-term resolution to end the conflict by saying, “You really are rewarding Hamas, and I’m not about to do that.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant were detained last year by the International Criminal Court for allegedly using starvation as a means of war.

Wynne Evans says Strictly told him ‘don’t trust anyone’ in shock statement

Opera singer Wynne Evans of Wales has criticized Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One, claiming it is “fundamentally flawed in its duty of care.” The 53-year-old tenor, who is well known for his Go. appearances In addition to professional dancer Katya Jones, Katya Jones and other similar insurance ads appeared in the 20th anniversary season of the well-known dance show.

After apologizing for using “inappropriate language” during the Strictly tour, Evans revealed he had been fired by the BBC and would no longer host on BBC Radio Wales.

His apology came after he allegedly made a sexual joke toward Janette Manrara, one of the other professional dancers, according to a report from the Mail On Sunday in January.

What it feels like to see pictures of Strictly, Evans wrote in an Instagram post featuring a photo of the Strictly professionals. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve made mistakes. Despite being imperfect in every way, the Daily Mail still makes mistakes.

Wynne Evans shared this photo via his social media accounts (wynneevans/Instagram).

Evans claimed that the BBC had “lied and lied to a degree to absolve itself of any wrongdoing,” and that this was his “hardest part.”

One thing they truly care about is protecting themselves and their jobs and Ratings, he continued, “people come second from my dealings right at the very top with (BBC director-general) Tim Davie, through BBC Wales and the HR department.

I anticipated a magical experience when I first entered the Strictly rehearsal room. And it was right away. But the first thing I was told was, “Don’t trust anyone in this room, not even me.” ‘”.

That really hit me. Although I occasionally sail close to the line, I’ve always had my heart on my sleeve, so I never feel bad about what I do. I had no idea how people would go about protecting their personal and BBC brands at all costs.

Evans claimed in his statement that the HR department “fabricated facts, invented files and dates, and produced an account of events that was illogical.”

I didn’t even see or consent to the statements made in my name. He said, “My voice was taken away. Evans had previously stated that he had never authorized the apology he offered for the BBC’s January statement.

A BBC spokesperson said at the time that Wynne had fully accepted the apology made on his behalf by the Strictly Come Dancing Tour PR representative on Saturday January 25.

wynne on this morning
In his emotional post, the opera singer made reference to suicidal ideas.

Evans also revealed in his Tuesday post that “Tim Davie publicly promised that the BBC would safeguard those who participated in Strictly.” As I battled to save my own life while sat in a psychiatrist’s office close to the BBC, staring out the window at the building, I thought about that promise. I was so close to the edge that.

“I’m not blaming myself for my mistakes, as I did when I wrote this,” I said. The system is malfunctioning, so I’m writing it. Strictly’s duty of care is now fundamentally flawed. While people’s well-being is in jeopardy, it can continue because of ratings.

Giovanni Pernice, a former Strictly dancer, was accused of bullying and harassment by his ex-dance partner Amanda Abbington in a report released in 2024 by the BBC.

The broadcaster took a number of fresh measures to improve welfare, including upholding some, but not all, of the complaints. This included having a chaperone with you “at all times” during rehearsals in the training room.

Evans has participated in The Phantom of the Opera’s 25th anniversary and won Celebrity MasterChef in 2023.

He claimed in May that a comment he made on the Strictly Come Dancing tour was slang for fellow contestant Jamie Borthwick, an EastEnders actor, and wasn’t sexual or directed at one of the female cast members. The Wynne Evans Show, a live weekday internet broadcast, made the singer’s return to radio in June.

This story’s commentators from the BBC declined.
