‘The risk is too high’ – Stokes to miss fifth Test

England captain Ben Stokes says his latest injury will not impact his participation in this winter’s Ashes after he was ruled out of the fifth and final Test against India, which starts on Thursday.

Stokes misses out at The Oval with a shoulder problem, sustained during the draw at Old Trafford, with a tight turnaround of just four days between Tests.

But the all-rounder says he is only expecting to be sidelined for around six or seven weeks.

“It is one of those of weighing up the risk-reward, and the risk was way too high for damaging this any further than it currently is,” said Stokes.

“I wouldn’t expect to put any of my players at risk with an injury like this. Once this series is done I was feet up anyway – it doesn’t really make too much difference to what I’ve got from the end of the series up until the winter.”

Ollie Pope will lead the side in Stokes’ absence while Jacob Bethell will bat at number six.

There are also three changes to the bowling line-up with quicks Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse, who has played all four Tests so far, also missing out alongside spinner Liam Dawson.

All-rounder Stokes struggled across the final three days of the drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford, as he bowled 24 overs in India’s first innings but only 11 in their second.

He was seen struggling with his right shoulder in the warm-up on day five and was continually prodding at it during his bowling spell.

But he insists he would not have done anything differently regarding his workloads across the first four Tests.

“When I’m out on the field I play to win and give everything I possibly can. If I feel there’s a moment in a game where I need to put everything I’m feeling aside, I’ll do that because it’s how much this team means to me, how much playing for England means to me, how much winning means to me.

“There’s absolutely nothing I could have done before. Being a professional sportsman, injuries are part of this game and I can’t do anything about that.”

It is a significant blow to England considering his superb form that has seen him earn back-to-back player of the match awards.

He took 5-72 with the ball in India’s first innings in Manchester, then followed up with 141 with the bat, becoming only the fourth England man to take a five-wicket haul and score a century in the same Test.

It leaves England’s seam bowling attack looking light. Tongue took 11 wickets across the first two Tests, Woakes has taken 10 while Overton has only played one Test, which came against New Zealand in 2022.

Atkinson also makes his return from injury for his first appearance of the series, having hurt his hamstring during England’s one-off Test v Zimbabwe in May. He has played just one second XI game since.

Without a specialist spinner, Bethell and Root are the part-time options.

There was some hope that Mark Wood could be fit in time for this Test after his knee surgery but he is instead targeting the white-ball matches against South Africa at the end of the summer.

Archer’s omission comes after he has played back-to-back Tests, having made his red-ball comeback after four years in the third game at Lord’s, with England hoping both he and Wood will be fit for the winter’s Ashes in Australia.

Stokes hinted at the need for “fresh legs” after England spent 143 overs in the field across the final two days in Manchester but his own injury leaves plenty of unknowns.

Overton has played one first-class match for Surrey since May after he suffered a finger injury playing for England in a one-day international against West Indies in the same month.

Atkinson shone during his debut international summer in 2024, but his only cricket since the Zimbabwe Test has been a club match three weeks ago and a Surrey second XI game last week where he bowled 30 overs.

Stokes’ century at Old Trafford was his first in more than two years but his absence from the batting line-up will be less of a concern for England.

Bethell, 21, made a stunning start to Test cricket at the end of last year with three half-centuries in three matches against New Zealand and there have been calls for him to be included in the XI throughout the summer.

Trump deserves Open at Turnberry, says son

To play this video you need to enable JavaScript in your browser.

The son of US President Donald Trump says his father “deserves” to have his Turnberry course host The Open again – but will probably have left the White House by the time it does.

The Ayrshire venue, regarded as one of the best in golf, last hosted the world’s oldest major championship in 2009, five years before Trump bought the resort.

However, in an exclusive interview, Eric Trump told BBC Sport: “It deserves it, and I truly think that my father’s been a guy who also deserves it.”

He added: “There’s no-one that’s been better for the game of golf. He’s been a cheerleader his entire life, because he loves it and he believes in it.

But the 41-year-old, who runs the golf courses in his father’s property business, said: “I think chances are by the time an Open comes back around, his time in government will be gone and we’ll be back to being a strictly commercial company.”

President Trump’s second term in office will end in early 2029. Host venues for the Open from 2028 have not yet been confirmed.

‘Turnberry is ready’

Earlier this month, the R&A said “big logistical issues” around local infrastructure had to be overcome before Turnberry could be awarded The Open.

The body’s chief executive Mark Darbon said the course remained in its pool of venues – but claimed there was “some work to do on the road, rail and accommodation infrastructure around Turnberry”.

But Eric Trump disagrees, insisting “the actual infrastructure, the actual plant, the physical location is really second to none, anywhere”.

“You could host the Open Championship on that course tomorrow,” he added. “It’s impeccable, and Turnberry is ready for it.”

He added: “I think any challenge can be worked through and solved with smart people.”

In 2021, the then head of the R&A implied the course would not be restored to the Open rota while President Trump was associated with the venue, expressing concerns that the focus would be off the course.

Earlier this year, Eric Trump met R&A officials at St Andrews to discuss the event returning to Turnberry – but does he think his father’s divisive political position remains a concern for the R&A?

“No, honestly, I think it’s changed a lot to tell you the truth,” he said.

Darbon has acknowledged that UK government officials have also spoken with the R&A about the possibility of Turnberry hosting The Open.

President Trump hosted the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at the course during a visit to Scotland – the country where his mother was born – earlier this week, and called for the championship to return, calling it “the best resort in the world”.

Asked about the issue at Monday’s joint press conference, Starmer said: “The decision on The Open is not a decision for me.”

Eric Trump insisted he did not know whether his father had spoken directly to the Prime Minister about it, but claimed: “Turnberry will win the Open Championship at the right time, based on the merits of it being the greatest golf course on earth, that’s what’s going to win the day.”

“I didn’t specifically talk about the championship, but I think he too realises the importance of that asset to the west coast of Scotland and, to frankly, the nation’s economy.”

Trump was speaking after he accompanied his father to the opening of a new 18-hole course at the Aberdeenshire resort the family also owns near Balmedie.

The Scottish government has announced that £180,000 of public money is being spent to help bring the DP World Tour’s Nexo Championship to the venue next month.

“It’s probably the last links course that will ever be built in the UK, and I truly think we have the best 36 holes anywhere in the world,” Eric Trump said.

The resort is yet to make a profit, but he added: “Here’s the good news. We don’t give a damn, right. This is our Mona Lisa. If we spent $100m and never got a penny back, it doesn’t make any difference. We wanted to do something incredible.”

The Trumps’ development of the course has also faced criticism from some local residents concerned about the impact on the environment.

In response, Eric Trump said: “We’ve done a hell of a job and for anybody to say that the Trump Organisation hasn’t brought economic development to Scotland. I mean, it’s freaking laughable, and it wasn’t always easy to tell you the truth.

Sir Michael Palin says he is preparing for the end of his life in sad update

According to Sir Michael Palin, he has made preparations for his passing. The TV star discussed his will in a recent interview and how his children “know where to find what they need to find” if I pass away.

The TV personality revealed details of his wife’s tragic death in 2023. He described their romance and relationship as “Helen and I met on holiday in 1959.” At the time, I was about 16 years old. A lengthy marriage was the outcome of a holiday romance. We always had the impression that we were a unit, which I didn’t realize until after she passed away.

There was a difficult situation because you had lost half of your life. Despite her presence, I still say, “We have in our garden,” “We have two grandchildren,” and “We have two grandchildren.” The word “we” is still in use. I can’t possibly say, “I’m here,” but it’s as Lulu did in a desperate plea to Sharon Osbourne ahead of her funeral today.

Michael explained in an interview for the On the Marie Curie Couch podcast that his wife had endured years of pain since having a knee replacement, before “a number of different things were identified.”

She “had some heart issues.” She was a gregarious person and incredibly happy, and I think she had a very, very difficult time adjusting to her gradual withdrawal from life. She ultimately received a kidney failure diagnosis. She then developed pneumonia, and we were taken to the hospital. He explained that we had a fairly negative experience there.

He claimed that she was happier during her final few days of life than she had been in her previous six years of life because of the care she had received at a Marie Curie hospice.

With his late wife Helen, Michael and their three children, William, Rachel, and Thomas. He stated, “I do think about death, and the family is rather wonderful about it: “Have you made a will? Can you grant me a will?”

“I’ve made my will,” the statement read. If I pass away, my family and my children are aware of where to go. He resisted insisting that he lives each day and doesn’t dwell on mortality, but he did admit that he occasionally feels “slightly unsteady” on his feet.

He declared, “I’m 82 now, which is longer than any Palin man has lived for 200 years.” I stay in shape, and fortunately, I’m working on some really challenging projects, including filming.

I make up my mind that I’ll be fine, but I’m aware that I won’t because you’re going to be tired at times. As you exit the bed, you feel a little shaky and wonder what’s going on. The old car is getting a little rusty, I suppose.

Michael says the death of his wife Helen, who he was discouraged from doing as a child, had an open heart operation in 2019 and that it had opened the door for the entire family to view death more directly.

Myanmar military government sets long prison terms for election protests

The military government of Myanmar has harsh new penalties for protesting its planned election, with some critics facing years in prison for dissention.

The new law became effective on Tuesday, months before the end of the year, according to the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar.

The bill, which opposition groups and international observers have criticized as a plot to uphold military rule, prohibits “any speech, organizing, inciting, protesting, or distributing leaflets in order to destroy a part of the electoral process.”

The sentences for breaking the law are three to seven years in prison, while group offenses are five to ten years in prison.

Additionally, the law criminalizes causing damage to voters’ or polling stations, as well as intimidating or abusing voters, candidates, or election workers, with sentences as high as 20 years. The law mandates that “everyone involved in the crime faces the death penalty” if anyone is killed in an election-related incident.

In a 2021 coup that sparked a multipolar civil war, Myanmar’s military-led government seized power, leaving the military’s majority in place. Before the poll, some state census workers went on a deployment last year to gather data before there was opposition and security risk.

According to preliminary results, “significant security constraints” prevented the collection of data from an estimated 19 million of the nation’s 51 million people.

Analysts predicted that the military’s numerous anti-coup fighter and ethnic armed groups, which are at odds with each other, might launch offensives in the run-up to the election as a show of support for their positions.

Last month, a UN expert called on the international community to reject the election plan as “a fraud.”

Birmingham will honour hometown legend Ozzy Osbourne with a special cortege procession through Broad Street, celebrating his legacy in the city where Black Sabbath was born

The city of Birmingham is set to pay a heartfelt tribute to one of its most famous sons, legendary rocker Ozzy Osbourne, with a special cortege procession through the heart of the city.

The procession, which will travel along the iconic Broad Street, reflects the deep-rooted connection between the Black Sabbath frontman and the city where his story began.

Born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948, at a maternity hospital in Marston Green, Ozzy was raised in the working-class district of Aston, where he developed the distinctive Brummie accent that remains one of his trademarks. It comes as Ozzy’s wife Sharon made an incredible gesture to Birmingham ahead of the star being laid to rest.

It was in the streets of Birmingham that Ozzy’s love for heavy metal grew, with the rocker and fellow Brummie musicians Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward forming Black Sabbath in 1968.

The band’s distinctive sound would go on to define an entire genre and put Birmingham on the global music map.

The upcoming procession will pass through key landmarks that honour Ozzy’s musical legacy, including the Black Sabbath Bridge and the commemorative bench on nearby Broad Street. These spots have become imperative sites for fans from around the world who have always been eager to connect with the birthplace of heavy metal.

“Ozzy was more than a music legend, he was a son of Birmingham,” said Councillor Zafar Iqbal, Lord Mayor of Birmingham. “His impact on global music is undeniable, but it’s his humble beginnings and enduring connection to this city that make him truly special to us.”

The tribute comes after Ozzy’s emotional return to Aston earlier this month, where he and the rest of Black Sabbath performed at the sold-out Back to the Beginning concert at Villa Park. The show was a symbolic homecoming that proved his deep bond with the city and its people.

Despite decades in the global spotlight, Ozzy has never lost his affection for his hometown. His thick Birmingham accent, often referenced in media, remains a badge of honour and as a reminder of his roots in the city’s blue-collar heart.

Local fans have long embraced Ozzy as a “local lad who done good”. Hundreds of fans are already gathering to pay their final respects to Ozzy at Black Sabbath bridge in Birmingham ahead of the procession.

The cortege, along with the Osbourne family, is expected to stop at the Black Sabbath bench, where thousands of tributes, balloons and flowers have been left since the heavy metal icon died last week.

The Osbourne family is expected to look at the sea of tributes when the cortege reaches Broad Street at around 1pm.

Crowds of people, many wearing Ozzy Osbourne T-shirts and holding posters and other tributes, are already waiting behind metal barriers all along Broad Street.

Black Sabbath music is playing loudly and there are chants of “Ozzy Ozzy Ozzy” from the crowds. Security personnel are also taking bunches of flowers from those in the crowd to add to those already laying in front of the bench.

The city’s mayor even referred to the late singer as a ‘son of Birmingham’ ahead of this funeral today with thousands of fans expected to pay their respects.

After decades in the music industry, the later funeral is set to be attended with some of Ozzy’s long-term friends and collaborators.

Elton John is among those expected to be in attendance for the Prince of Darkness’s farewell, along with Ozzy’s Black Sabbath bandmates including Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Geezer Butler.

James Hetfield from Metallica has also been invited along with singer Yungblud, who has formed a close relationship with the star in the last few years.

The mourners will be led by Ozzy’s wife Sharon and Ozzy’s children Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.

Roman Kemp banned from interviewing Hollywood star Jennifer Lawrence as prank backfires

Presenter, Roman Kemp, has claimed he was escorted out of an interview by Jennifer Lawrence’s team and banned from ever interviewing the Hollywood A-lister

Roman Kemp has sensationally claimed he was kicked out of an interview with Jennifer Lawrence and banned from speaking to the Hollywood actress again after a toe-curling prank.

The presenter, 32, admitted he thought it would be a good idea to get a huge fake tattoo of the Oscar winner’s face on his chest before the interview – which did not go down well with Jen, 34.

Taking to Instagram, sharing a throwback snap of himself, sporting the enormous black and white tattoo above his heart, Roman wrote: “Found this old picture of when I interviewed Jennifer Lawrence and for fun pretended to be a mega fan complete with a tattoo…She did NOT find it funny. I was escorted out by security and told I could never interview her again.” It comes as Jennifer appeared to reveal the name of her second child as she was papped in L.A.

In another post on Roman’s Instagram Stories, The One Show presenter said he has not spoken to the Die My Love actress since. He quipped: “Tbf still haven’t had the chance to redeem myself or explain the situation to her… (sic)”

Roman said in a 2017 interview with The Standard that Jennifer, who won an Oscar for film, Silver Linings Playbook, did not “get” the joke.

He said at the time: “I went to a film junket of one of Jennifer Lawrence’s films and you know, like every other man on the planet, I have the biggest crush ever on her, right?

“In my head, I’m thinking, ‘OK, how do I embarrass myself as much as possible?’

“So I got a huge transferrable tattoo of Jennifer Lawrence’s face on my chest that looked really good, but she just didn’t get it.

“She just looked at it like, ‘Oh my God, where’s my security? Please get this kid out the room.'” Roman also said in the interview that he hates making people feel uncomfortable.

The former Capital Breakfast radio show host explained: “I don’t like people feeling uncomfortable ever, that’s not my thing.

“I think I have a nice connection with the artist, because I don’t ask those questions that they don’t want to be asked.

“I’d rather have fun because I think you get more out of someone if they’re happy anyway.

“But don’t get me wrong, you come up against it a lot.”

It comes as Jennifer teased the name of her second child when she was papped in L.A recently. The actress was spotted running earrands in Tinseltown wearing multiple gold necklaces, notably one featuring pendants with the letters ‘C’ after her son Cy, and ‘L,’ hinting that her second baby’s name might begin with an L.
