Olympic Biathlon Champion Dies After Pakistan Mountaineering Accident

After being hit by falling rocks on a Pakistani mountain, German Olympia biathlon gold medalist Laura Dahlmeier was declared dead on Wednesday at the age of 31.

Her agency said in a statement released on Wednesday that confirmed her death that rescue efforts were “impossible due to the dangerous nature of the site.”

The statement continued, “The operation was suspended because rescue efforts to recover her failed.”

According to a statement from her team on her official social media pages, the accident occurred on Monday at around noon at a height of 5,700 metres (18,700 feet), in the Karakoram range, at around 700 meters.

After reaching safety, Dahlmeier’s climbing partner triggered the alarm.

A senior local official in the Ghanche district, where the more than 6, 000-meter mountain is located, informed AFP earlier on Wednesday that it was determined that a helicopter rescue was not feasible.

He continued, “She was injured in extremely challenging circumstances at this altitude.”

A team of four, including three Americans and a German mountaineer, confirmed the ground rescue by Shipton Trek &amp, Tours Pakistan, the expedition’s organizer.

No one was able to reach Dahlmeier because of the possibility of further rockfalls and the site’s “remoteness,” according to her team’s statement on Tuesday.

Local disaster management official Muhammad Ali told AFP that the region’s weather has been “extremely harsh” for the past week, with heavy rain, strong winds, and thick clouds.

The Great Trango Tower was already visible thanks to Dahlmeier, an experienced mountaineer who had visited the area since the end of June.

In a statement released on Wednesday, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called Dahlmeier “a role model for peaceful, joyful, and fair coexistence across borders” and that he was “an ambassador for our country around the world (and) a role model for our country’s international cooperation.

She won seven gold medals at the world championships, and she became the first woman biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit at the same Games.

At the age of 25, Dahlmeier stopped competing professionally in 2019.

She then began a career as a biathlon broadcaster for ZDF and climbed mountains.

According to her team, she was a certified mountain guide and ski guide.

Sandoval dethrones flyweight world champion Teraji

Kenshiro Teraji lost his WBC and WBA flyweight titles to Ricardo Rafael Sandoval in Yokohama, Japan, in an upset.

In the fifth round, Sandoval, 26, climbed off the canvas to face the two-weight world champion.

The scorecards for California native Sandoval, 115-112, 115-112, and 113-114, did not quite reflect a brilliant, closely contested fight.

“I feel incredible. I had no idea that we would be at this stage since I started at the age of ten, Sandoval said.

Teraji, 33, who suffered his first defeat of his career since 2021, received no complaints despite the scorecards.

Teraji may now consider his future after winning the lightweight and flyweight divisions.

His defeat put an unhappy night in store for the assembled Japanese fans, who also witnessed Daigo Higa once more come dangerously close to becoming a bantamweight world champion.

Another American was the one who broke people’s hearts, as Texan Antonio Vargas won the WBA bantamweight title by unanimous decision in a last-gasp knockdown.

Higa beat the traveling champion in the fourth round, but the traveling champion won in the final round.

Higa has lost its third world championship fight in a row against a Japanese team at home.

Following Yoshiki Takei’s pointless defeat in September, Seiya Tsutsumi’s draw with him in February came with a subsequent draw.

When Tsutsumi, the previous champion, was forced to resign due to a long-term injury, Vargas was made the WBA world champion.

“I didn’t want the outcome I wanted.” It’s a title defense, I suppose. I’d prefer to receive my rematch. Vargas responded, “I look forward to being back.”

Tsutsumi, who carried his own WBA belt, walked into the ring to call out Vargas after the match.

Higa might win the match-up despite Vargas’ openness to the match-up after a thrilling contest.

‘I’ve seen Sugababes live – you’d be a fool to miss out on their set at Brighton Pride’

This weekend, August 3 is the first day of the amazing Brighton Pride, and I can’t recommend seeing them more. In addition, most of Sugababes’ bangers feature themes like empowerment, self-expression, and resilience, which are uplifting and empowering for the LGBTQ+ community.

Brighton Pride, an annual LGBTQ+ festival and parade, takes place in Brighton, England. Thousands of people visit each year at one of the UK’s largest and most well-liked Pride events. A lively parade through the city, live music performances, community gatherings, and Preston Park festival are typical highlights of the occasion.

They were fantastic to see them perform at Co-Op Live in Manchester, and they were absolutely fantastic. They may not have as much choreography as they do, but their vocal prowess more than compensate for their lack of soaring around the stage.

I was hardly able to walk and speak when Sugababes arrived. However, as we progressed through primary school, my friends and I adored their music because it became a symbol of the crop tops, baseball caps, and dresses with jeans era.

I can recall when “About You Now” was first released, and I recently downloaded it to my pink flip Nokia. The Sugababes, who are pure nostalgia, good vibes, and no negativity, are what they represent to me.

If Sugababes’ Brighton Pride performance is anything like this, you’re in for a treat: thankfully I was able to see them live at their Manchester show last April.

They gave a fantastic performance (Redferns via Getty Images).

Sugababes took to the stage at Manchester’s Co-op Live concert, where Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan, and Siobhán Donaghy, the original three-piece band, performed their first song.

They’ve always had a reputation for their vocal prowess, but they never lost any of it on stage. Their singing was flawless throughout the entire performance.

People were able to recall lyrics from areas of their brains that they believed had been closed off years ago, like “Hole in the Head” and “Red Dress.”

You’re going to be treated to an even bigger treat thanks to the audience’s enthusiasm, and Keisha even made up the joke that they were singing live because Mutya needed a drink to make the most of her performance.

Sugababes
They will impart a lot of redfern nostalgia (Redferns).

Sugababes fans will be in force this weekend in Brighton in awe of the privilege of being surrounded by people who are master of every song.

However, the woman next to me yelled “Play push the button and right round” impatiently when I saw them in Manchester, indicating that some people were just there for the big bangers.

The artist will, like with every good gig, save the best until the last minute, which I assume they will do again in Brighton. The evening ended with their best singles, “About You Now” and “Push the Button,” which everyone will be aware of and scream at the top of their lungs.

Let’s face it, most Brighton Pride attendees will be OG fans after downloading the MP3s of early Sugababes songs and frantically learning the lyrics.

If you’re going to Brighton Pride this weekend, live out your best girl band dreams, because we all pretend to be in a girl band at playtime.

Ireland’s Wafer ‘definitely not’ out of World Cup

Images courtesy of Getty

According to scrum coach Denis Fogarty, Ireland are “quite confident” that Aoife Wafer, who is in the back row, will “play some part” in the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

After having knee surgery, the 2025 Women’s Six Nations Player of the Championship, who will join Harlequins from Leinster after the World Cup, emerged as a doubt for the tournament earlier this month.

The 22-year-old flanker will miss Ireland’s Saturday warm-up games against Scotland on Saturday and Canada on August, and it is uncertain if she will recover in time for the Pool C opener against Japan on August 24.

She has undergone a procedure, according to Fogarty on Wafer, and is not currently ruled out of the World Cup.

When asked if Wafer was competing against time to win the World Cup in England, Fogarty responded, “No, we’re quite confident that she will play some part in the World Cup, which is really, really pleasing.

She is currently doing very well. Simply put, it’s just making sure when she returns to it that it’s appropriate.

In the run-up to the World Cup, Ireland had two injury setbacks, with Dorothy Wall and Erin King both missing.

There is no denying that losing three key players in a similar way has been challenging, Fogarty continued.

That’s the nature of the game, though. Sam [Monaghan] has returned, which is a big plus, and other girls have also impressed us throughout the camp.

Trump hits India with 25% tariff, extra ‘penalty’ for Russian oil purchases

As the White House is obstructed by the unending conflict in Ukraine, President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods as well as an unspecified fine for purchasing Russian oil and military equipment.

Trump claimed on his Truth Social account on Wednesday that the trade actions are necessary to correct a long-standing trade imbalance, which he claimed will take effect on Friday.

Trump wrote, “While India is our friend, we have done comparatively little business with them because their tariffs are too high,” Trump continued.

The president also attributed India’s purchase of Russian military equipment and oil, which he claimed helped to fuel the conflict in Ukraine. As a result of the launch of his administration’s revised tariffs on various nations, he intends to impose an additional “penalty” starting on Friday.

The Indian government said in a statement on Wednesday that it was considering Trump’s tariff decision.

Trump’s ties with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who were friendly during the US president’s first term but have since encountered difficulties with trade and immigration, are further complicated by the aggressive trade policy. Modi has also refuted Trump’s claims that he intervened in a four-day conflict with Pakistan in May, saying that India will never “accept mediation” and that he will never do so.

Prior to and following the conflict with India, Pakistan, in contrast, saw its stock increase under the Trump administration. For the first time in a US president’s visit to a military chief from Pakistan who is not also the country’s head of state, Trump hosted Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir for lunch at the White House in June.

Trump claimed that the US announcement would open markets for US goods while allowing the US to raise import tax rates would be the result of a string of negotiated trade agreements with the European Union, Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Trump sees tariff revenues as a way to offset the increase in the budget due to his most recent income tax cuts and increase the number of domestic factory jobs.

The economic impact of Trump’s effective use of tariffs as a cudgel to reset the terms of trade is uncertain because most economists anticipate a slowerdown in US growth and higher inflationary pressures as domestic businesses and consumers are burdened by the costs of the taxes.

According to the Census Bureau, the US imported more goods from India last year than it exported, accounting for a $35.8 billion trade imbalance.

India is the largest nation in the world and a potential geopolitical counterbalance to China with a population of 1.4 billion people. Russia and India have close ties, and New Delhi has not opposed Western sanctions against Moscow for its conflict in Ukraine.

The US president announced that India would begin purchasing US oil and natural gas when Trump and Modi met in February.

Trump and reporters who were on his way home from a five-day visit to Scotland on Tuesday discussed his trade and tariff policies. When questioned about reports that India was anticipating a US tariff rate of at least 25%, he said, “We’re going to see.”
