Jeremy Vine reveals what will happen if Joey Barton fails to pay staggering legal bill

Former football player Joey Barton must pay out a sizable sum of money following their High Court libel lawsuit last year, according to BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine.

TV presenter Jeremy Vine has released a lengthy statement regarding his recent legal action again Joey Barton – claiming that the former footballer has paid out more than half a million pounds after their High Court libel battle.

Vine sued Barton for libel and harassment over several online posts, including one in which he falsely called the BBC Radio 2 presenter a “big bike nonce” and a “pedo defender” on Twitter (X).

After Barton posted two apology messages on the same social media platform last year, the pair settled the dispute. They also paid Vine £110, 000 in damages in addition to his legal expenses.

However, there had been some confusion regarding the exact amount Barton would pay out – something Vine has now attempted to clear up. In a series of tweets on Twitter (X), the The Jeremy Vine Show host told his followers he has “no further beef with Mr Barton” and “it is a relief just to be vindicated and to have the case settled so decisively”.

He wrote, “STATEMENT I’m grateful for your kind messages regarding my libel against Joey Barton.” I can confirm that the investigation is now complete and that I’m happy with the outcome. In my case alone, Mr. Barton has already given out more than half a million pounds.

The stages of the case appear to be in dispute. To explain the numbers, the following is provided. There is no further uproar against Mr. Barton, who has a number of ongoing legal issues. He also pleaded guilty to wife beating while also supporting my libel claim.

“My damages in the case were £110, 000. These were paid last year, and Mr. Barton publicly apologised in accordance with the rules. However, my legal fees ranged from 180 to 190k. Mr. Barton made a promise in court to pay the costs before deciding to contest the figure’s excessiveness.

Frustratingly, this caused me to file a separate lawsuit to recover my costs. Additionally, the separate action cost money. Two days before the costs recovery action, Mr. Barton paid the principal costs, but it was too late to avoid being held responsible for the costs recovery action.

Vine then went on to detail the enormous bill that the former footballer has to pay in detail and what might happen if Barton didn’t pay the money owed.

“Barton paid for the libel,” Barton claimed. The costs were paid for by him. He incurred costs with interest. He incurred the costs of losing a challenge. And because he had more expensive attorneys, he also paid his own costs, which will be higher than mine. Vine informed his followers that he had lost at least half a million pounds.

” BARTON’S BILL 110k — the libel. 160k — my costs. Interest on costs is $3,600. My costs-recovery action is $43,000. 200k — his costs. MINIMUM £516, 600. What if Barton refuses to pay or is unable to do so? was a question that was raised. I had to conduct legal searches on his home to make sure he had the funds. It is entirely his own. I was given the warning that his house could be seized if he didn’t pay.

“This would effectively make Mr. Barton my landlord and pay my rent there,” he said. I would have the right to force the sale of his home if he incurred a debt that would not pay my rent.

Vine concluded, “I had no wish to be in that position, and I am grateful to my lawyers for making sure we received the final payments today.” Gervase de Wilde, my attorney, is my lawyer, who has a background in online defamation. She is available at @devonsolicitors if you need her.

It’s a relief to be vindicated and to have the case resolved so decisively that I may return to this subject in due course. I appreciate you reading this, especially if you sent support messages. JV. “

Barrister Gervase de Wilde, for Vine, stated in a mutual statement read out at the High Court in October last year that Barton’s actions, which included a “constant and highly damaging campaign of defamation, harassment, and misuse of private information,” had deeply alarmed, distressed, and upset the broadcaster.

A specialist costs court heard earlier this month that Barton had agreed to pay the main legal action’s costs of £160, 000. Barton will now be responsible for paying the total of £203, 172.30 of Vine’s costs following the legal action, as ordered by Judge Colum Leonard to pay an additional £43, 172.30 due to the negotiation of the £160, 000 figure.

In May of last year, Vine’s attorneys claimed that Barton’s posts amounted to a “calculated and sustained attack.” During his career, Barton started using the hashtag “#bikenonce” on X, which caused it to become popular on the platform. He also played for teams like Manchester City, Newcastle United, Rangers, and French side Marseille.

After Mrs. Justice Steyn declared that some posts could defame Vine, Barton apologized to the journalist in June of last year, saying that the allegations he made were “untrue.”

He promised to pay Vine £75, 000 in damages, but Vine’s attorneys later claimed Barton would pay an additional £35, 000 as part of a “separate settlement” for claims that were published after the legal action was started.

Barton made four promises as part of the settlement, including one that did not harass Vine or encourage others to do so, according to Mr. De Wilde’s testimony at the hearing in October. Vine remarked after the hearing that Barton “needs to find a different hobby.”

King Charles’ surprise royal residence that has double the visitors of Buckingham Palace

The Royal Collection Trust has released their annual report, with one significant royal quarter welcoming more than twice as many people as the famous Palace could.

While Buckingham Palace has long been synonymous with the royal family, it seems the impressive London quarters is not the favourite royal residence among dedicated royal fans.

Windsor Castle welcomed a record-breaking number of guests in the previous year, as the Royal Collection Trust’s annual review revealed, but Buckingham Palace did not receive as many royal-loving visitors as it did.

According to the yearly review, Windsor Castle saw 1,367,000 visitors in the year 2024-2025, while Buckingham Palace, situated in the centre of London, only saw 683,000 royal fans visit in the same space of time. The impressive numbers come after King Charles axed a major tradition at the Palace .

Windsor Castle, located 25 miles outside of London, is close to where the Prince and Princess of Wales reside with their three children, making it a major attraction for anyone dedicated to the Firm.

Buckingham Palace is closed for a while, but Windsor Castle is open year-round to the public, which didn’t stop a large crowd of royal fans from visiting the stunning Palace in London.

With the opening of the East Wing, which included a special tour, becoming a major attraction, Buckingham Palace attracted a record-breaking number of visitors during its summer of 2024, with almost 6, 000 people visiting the State Room in addition to the State Room.

646 389 people showed up at the Palace’s summer opening this year, which is the highest number since it first opened its doors to the public in 1993, making it the highest number since.

In contrast to the impressive visitor numbers at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, Edinburgh’s Palace of Holyroodhouse attracted 440, 000 visitors annually, while the royal mews attracted 165, 000.

After largely dividing his time between the royal residences before he became King, Charles now spends more time at the Windsor residence. Windsor Castle was also a favourite of the late Queen Elizabeth.

Windsor Castle was also a popular residence for Prince William and Prince Harry during their childhoods, as well as their royal cousins such as Zara Tindall.

According to a member of staff who has worked for both the late Queen and King Charles, the castle is “coming to life again”.

‘I went to Ozzy Osbourne’s funeral and won’t forget what fans did to ease Sharon’s pain’

Ozzy Osbourne today had a send-off appropriate for a prince in Birmingham.

His beloved hometown of Birmingham was filled with people who flocked to bid the Prince of Darkness his final farewell.

As fans gathered along Broad Street in the city to pay tribute to the Black Sabbath icon, I had the honor of being one of the people who witnessed his final performance.

What stood out was the sheer love and adoration Ozzy had both in life and death. It was clear to see exactly what he meant to so many different types of people, which spanned far more than music. He was a reality TV master, becoming the very first to let cameras into his home and follow his life with wife Sharon and their kids. Ozzy became known for his personality just as much as his music, which certainly stands the test of time thanks to both Black Sabbath and his solo material.

One of the most heartfelt retirement shows ever, Ozzy made a fantastic return to Villa Park just over three weeks ago, joining other rock legends for one of the most heartfelt reunion shows ever.

After spending years in the States, he had wished for years to return to his beloved England. Thankfully, Sharon made sure to bring him and his wife back into their Buckinghamshire mansion.

Fans spotted a poignant detail that offered comfort when he announced the sad news of his passing on social media. Birmingham, United Kingdom, which depicts how Ozzy died where he loved, was the subject of the statement.

Ozzy made one last trip through his city today, passing by the Black Sabbath Bridge, which had been flooded with tributes for the previous week. As they began in Villa Park before entering the city, his adoring family, Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee, and Louis, were there with him at every turn.

Ozzy, the family patriarch and pillar of strength throughout many difficult times, was so clear to them.

As it was obvious that Sharon understood what it would mean for Ozzy and his supporters, she had even paid for today’s procession.

Her sincere donation demonstrates how deeply she cares about her late husband and how she wishes to express that to everyone.

And the fans, who made every effort to ease the family’s suffering, were very accepting of that gift.

John Layland (39) pays his respects. Fans are given a chance to pay their respects to heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne as his cortege travels through his home city of Birmingham. The Black Sabbath singer's body will be brought back for a procession that will travel along Broad Street in the city centre from 13:00 BST today (30/7). The hearse will make its way to the Black Sabbath Bridge and bench where thousands of fans have left messages and floral tributes. Osbourne died aged 76 on July 22, less than three weeks after Black Sabbath's farewell gig at Villa Park, Birmingham.

They vowed to show them they were with them in their grief by chanting “Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy,” “we love you Sharon,” and “we love you Osbournes,” and they tried everything to make a point of playing Ozzy’s poignant song Changes in bars.

Although I had anticipated a subdued and quiet moment, there was also joy and celebration.

Strictly Come Dancing alumni Seann Walsh and Michelle Tsiakkas have both spoken out about separate frightening incidents they recently experienced in London.

Comedian Seann Walsh, who appeared on Strictly in 2018, described a disturbing moment when a stranger attempted to get into his car while he was stopped at a red light.

Sharing the experience on Instagram, he wrote: “New in the adventures of living in London: today whilst waiting at the lights in my car, a guy walked up to my car, opened the passenger side door and went to get in.” It comes after Seann, 39, had his phone stolen in london before it travelled across the globe.

Seann remarked about the most recent terrifying ordeal, “Thankfully, the traffic lights had changed and I could leave.” I’m starting to feel like I’m a part of Grand Theft Auto.

Just after Walsh was mugged, something happened. He at the time posted a screenshot of his phone’s new location along with the statement, “My phone was stolen (yes, I live in London) a week ago and it is now in China.”

Michelle Tsiakkas, a professional dancer who joined the Strictly cast in 2022, also had a troubling experience of being mugged in the capital.

She stated in a video that was uploaded to Instagram: “Hi guys, I just wanted to let you know something happened to me the other day in London.”

“I’ve almost mentally recovered from that, but this happened a few days ago.” On the day, it was quite traumatizing. I squandered my entire day, felt terrible, afraid, and helpless, and I don’t want this to happen to you.

Tsiakkas explained that she was traveling nearby to see a dentist when the incident occurred.

She continued, “I whipped out my phone to check the directions because it was early in the morning.” A man riding an electric bike approached me from behind, passed me, and grabbed my phone.

My heart just fell. I tried to reach for it, but it grazed my knee and made me fall. I pleaded with him to return my phone, but he just flew away. He was moving too quickly or following, and he was wearing a mask.

Tsiakkas remarked that two nearby women had thanked her for their kindness in the difficult situation.

In addition, Seann and Katya Jones, a professional dancer, teamed up for a Strictly Come Dancing contest in 2018.

After being photographed kissing Katya, who was married at the time, during a night out, the comedian’s time on the show was overshadowed by controversy.

Walsh and Jones apologized in response to the incident, which created a media frenzy. Seann later revealed that Seann’s career and mental health suffered as a result of the fallout.

The pair fought their way through the drama before being eliminated. They stayed in the match for several more weeks.

One of the show’s most talked-about moments continues to be the scandal.

Woad the focus as Women’s Open heads to Wales

R&amp, A/Getty Images

Lottie Woad is the main subject of the AIG Women’s Open’s pre-tournament focus, which will begin at Royal Porthcawl on Thursday.

Lydia Ko, who is currently the reigning champion in her final major of the year, is the reigning champion.

However, Woad, who has emerged as the most exciting prospect in British golf, has been the focus of the build-up.

Despite having only won one major event of her professional career, the 21-year-old is unsurprisingly the bookmakers’ favorite to claim her first major victory.

However, England’s Woad must face off against the best women’s players if she wants to win.

The first men’s or women’s major to be staged in Wales is the 49th Women’s Open, which runs until Sunday, August 3, 2018.

Due to the combination of the tournament’s status, its reach, and the field’s quality, it has been hailed as the biggest women’s sporting event ever held in the nation.

On the BBC Sport website and mobile app, there will be live BBC radio commentary and text coverage of the entire four tournament days.

The R&amp, A and BBC Sport have a new multi-year agreement that will grant the Women’s Open broadcast rights from 2025 until 2027.

Woad to lead the “home challenge”?

Lottie Woad takes a shot at Royal PorthcawlGetty Images

Woad’s remarkable run of form, which began with a resounding victory at the Irish Open when she was still an amateur, in early July, earned her the title of favorite.

She then moved on to the professional side and won the Scottish Open debut last week, finishing just one shot outside the play-off at the Evian Championship, missing out on £400, 000 in prize money at the fourth women’s major of the year due to her amateur status.

If Woad, from Surrey, wins a major once more this weekend, she would become the first British woman to do so since Catriona Matthew 16 years ago, and the first time she did so was at Georgia Hall in 2018.

Another home contender, Charley Hull, calls Woad’s recent progress “absolutely unbelievable.”

“I played with her in Ireland’s practice rounds last week, and I played with her in the first two rounds last week,” Hull said. “I feel like she’s playing with such confidence that she can’t miss a shot.”

It’s wonderful to see, I think. She brings the game a breath of fresh air.

Charley Hull lines up a putt at Royal Porthcawl this weekGetty Images
The 29-year-old was forced to withdraw from the Evian Championship after collapsing on the course, which meant Hull’s preparations for the 60th major of her career were not ideal.

According to Hull, she said she has been hampered by a back injury and that she has lost four kilograms in the last three weeks as a result of illness.

Hull claims that her ailments have had an impact on her swing even though she is now feeling better.

She said, “I’m not hitting it the best this week, which is very frustrating because I’ve been looking forward to playing this event all year.”

“I just need to go out there with what I have,” I said. I won’t allow it to beat me up too much.

Two Welsh players are present on the field after a promising start to life on the Ladies European Tour this year, with Porthcawl member Darcey Harry playing in her first Women’s Open with her boyfriend and professional golfer Jacob Skov Olesen serving as her caddie.

Who are the main rivals?

Nelly Korda takes a shot at Royal Porthcawl this weekGetty Images

World No. 1 Nelly Korda, who hasn’t won in 2025, is one of the most admired players despite the fact that she is yet to achieve that status.

The two-time major champion finished in second place last year at St Andrews, but she has since dismissed the idea that a Women’s Open victory would be important to her.

The American, who is 27 years old, said, “I feel like I don’t really have anything to prove to anyone ever.”

Simply put, I’m passionate about the game. I enjoy playing against the best players in the world and testing my skills in these kinds of circumstances.

Jeeno Thitikul, the world’s number two, is another favorite this week along with Minjee Lee, the winner of last month’s Women’s PGA Championship, her third major success of her career.

Chance for Royal Porthcawl to shine

A general view of the second hold during the 2023 Senior Open Getty Images

The Ryder Cup was held at Celtic Manor in 2010, but this will be the largest individual golf competition ever to take place in Wales.

The Curtis Cup was won in 1964, and the Walker Cup in 1995, when Tiger Woods’ United States team was defeated by Great Britain and Northern Ireland, were held at Royal Porthcawl.

The Senior Open took place at the Welsh Links in 2014, 2017, and most recently in 2023 when Alex Cejka defeated Padraig Harrington in a play-off after both players had finished five over par in a tournament that sometimes featured icy weather.

Even though there should be enough wind to make it a factor on Wales’ only course with a sea view from every hole, the forecast for this week looks much better.

Korda remarked, “The views from the golf course are absolutely breathtaking.”

Ko has spent the first half of the week attempting to get familiar with a course that few people are familiar with, like many others in the field.

Due to the logistics and infrastructure involved in hosting a major, the regular 18th hole is being played as the first, with the customary first becoming the second, and so on.

Nobody really has an advantage because not many players have played here before, according to Ko, who said the field is “like a clean slate.”
