NMA Jigawa Decries Brain Drain, Proposes Salary Review

The Jigawa State Branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) is concerned about the state’s ongoing exodus of medical professionals, citing poor welfare conditions and the delay in implementing salary adjustments as major factors in the trend.

This was stated in a communiqué that was released on July 25 through July 26 at the conclusion of the association’s 2025 Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference at the Manpower Development Institute in Dutse.

The event brought together academics, policymakers, academics, and other stakeholders in the health sector under the theme “A Doctor and the Jigawa Health Sector: Reversing Brain Drain, Advanceing Careers, and Building a Doctor-Friendly Health System.”

The state’s doctor-patient ratio has increased as a result of the NMA’s observation that more than 30 doctors have left Jigawa in the last five months alone due to poor welfare and low competition for pay.

The association claimed that Jigawa’s current doctor-patient ratio is 1:100, which is a remarkable improvement from the WHO’s recommendation of 1:100.

REVISION YOUR STEP AND LOCAL PROCESS TO DISCUSS MEDICAL QUESTIONS

The association criticized the minimum wage implementation committee’s protracted delay in submitting its report to the governor despite having been given a two-week mandate.

“This deliberate bureaucratic delay smells like sabotage,” the author writes. The newly elected NMA chairman in the state, Usman Haruna, claimed that the committee had refused to follow a clear executive directive, undermining Governor Umar Namadi’s efforts to retain doctors and modernize the health system.

He continued, “We are requesting that His Excellency immediately compels the committee to submit its report and begin the full implementation of salary reviews and allowances.”

The association emphasized the urgent need to review doctors’ entry scale, hazard allowance, and call duty allowance to bring them in line with federal standards.

NMA Jigawa praised the state government’s recent hiring of new doctors as a “step in the right direction,” stressing that welfare issues must be addressed to ensure long-term retention.

Panelists and guest speakers provided practical policy and structural recommendations, as well as the role of the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) in improving state-wide primary healthcare delivery.

The establishment of a doctor-friendly hospital initiative and hospital-based Continuous Professional Development (CPD) support, as suggested by the guest speaker during the scientific sessions, was a key resolution at the AGM.

In addition, Hussaini Abubakar was appointed financial secretary for the 2025–2026 term after the NMA conducted a bye-election to fill leadership vacancies.

The association thanked Governor Umar Namadi for continuing to invest in the health sector, particularly the Medical Village project and the proposed minimum wage changes.

Additionally, it praised the support of Jigawa State IMPACT Project’s founder, Muhammad Kainuwa, as well as the Commissioner for Health, Muhammad Kainuwa.

We are partners in the development of health, not just about agitation. The association’s Publicity Secretary, Shamsu Sa’idu, stated that his organization is unwavering in its support of policy reforms, advancement of primary healthcare, and maintaining a doctor-friendly work environment.

World Athletics gene test introduced for female category

Track and field’s governing body has set a deadline of September 1 for athletes to pass a gene test before competing in the world championships in addition to the previously announced rules regarding female eligibility.

For female athletes to qualify for elite-level events, World Athletics announced in March that chromosome testing by cheek swabs or dry blood-spot tests would be required.

World Athletics stated in a statement on Wednesday that the next worlds will begin on September 13 in Tokyo, and that September 1 is “the closing date for entries and the date the regulations come into effect.”

Since Caster Semenya won her first 800-meter world title as a teenager in 2009, the most recent rules update gives certainty for the 2025 championships.

Semenya’s years-long challenge to a previous version of track and field’s eligibility guidelines, which affect athletes with medical conditions known as “differences in sex development,” was resolved three weeks ago in Strasbourg, France. The court’s decision did not overturn the rules of track because she did not receive a fair hearing at the Swiss supreme court.

In order to compete in international women’s events, World Athletics imposed new rules on Semenya and other athletes who have DSD and have suppressed their elevated natural testosterone levels. Menya refused to give medication.

The track body, which is based in Monaco, now requires a “once-in-a-lifetime test” to determine whether a person’s Y chromosome matches criteria for biological male athletes.

For you to compete in the female category, you must be biologically female, according to World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, at the highest level.

With the national-level protocol being followed by its member federations, the governing body will cover up to $100 of the costs for each test. Within two weeks, test results should be available.

World Athletics claimed that the SRY test is incredibly accurate and that false positive or false is improbable.

Transitional rules allow “a very small number of known DSD athletes” to continue competing if they take medication to stop the production of natural testosterone, as World Athletics has combined their eligibility criteria for DSD and transgender athletes.

According to World Athletics, “the transitional provisions do not apply to transgender women because there are no transgender athletes competing at the highest international level under the current regulations.”

Jason Manford sparks concern as he cancels performance hours before taking to stage

Jason Manford, a comedian, apologized on social media by posting a heartbreaking statement with his fans.

Jason Manford fans were devastated after the comedian made a last-minute announcement on Wednesday. The comedian-turned-actor took to social media to share an update on his upcoming performances.

The statement read: “We regret to inform you that tonight’s performance of A Manford All Seasons @albanarena has been unexpectedly cancelled due to Jason Manford being unwell and will now be rescheduled to Mon 20th Oct 2025. Thank you for understanding, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Unlike his usual posts on Twitter /X, it appeared as though someone had shared the update for him. It comes after Jason hit out at a hotel’s “ridiculous policy” earlier in the month following one of his shows.

Fans quickly emailed well wishes following his most recent update. One user reportedly said, “Get well soon, Jase, take it easy, fella.”

Another person echoed the sentiment, saying, “Get well soon, but perhaps stop burning the candle at both ends.” A third line was added: “I hope you recover quickly, Jason; I know it’s only a matter of course when you cancel shows.” Take good care of yourself.

Others, however, blasted the situation by saying, “Are you certain your hotel didn’t just cancel your room?” The tongue-in-cheek comment was accompanied by a winking face emoji.

The comedian, 44, had to share a hotel room with a friend because it was overbooked despite having a reservation, according to the comment’s fiasco. Before his A Manford All Seasons performance, he was in Bournemouth when staff at the hotel informed him that the hotel was overbooked.

Jason was informed by Village Hotel staff that his room had been sold to someone else because of his tardiness. Jason and his friend Steve had to share a room due to the problem.

But he didn’t want to abandon the situation. He shared his dissatisfaction on social media. So we arrived at our hotel in Bournemouth tonight, and it is already full. We were like, “Fine, that’s good-well done you,” he said.

They departed with the statement, “No, no, as in like without you.” We’re in separate rooms, so it’s obvious that Steve and I are in different rooms. And then we just discovered that, essentially, you must share if it is fully booked.

“Okay, don’t worry; these things happen, and that’s all b******t!” We spent the entire day together, I mean! Oh well, at least we have a nice view of the parking lot. Oh well, all of this happens. At sea, things turn out to be worse. However, if you’re booking and it’s a busy day in a busy city, please beware.

He continued, “We’re fortunate that we booked two rooms because there was a doctor waiting for us, and there was no room for him.” He simply had to leave, and he seemed to be out of room in Bournemouth tonight. That’s awful, really bad. I’ve heard that airplanes fly it, but I’ve never seen a hotel do it after 25 years of travel. That is not appropriate, and that is not appropriate.

Katsina LG Promises Quality Education, Awards Scholarships To 96 Students

Isah Miqdad, the leader of the Katsina Local Government Council, has pledged to provide the electorates with quality, affordable education while also ensuring that the area’s primary education sector can address about 70% of the area’s lingering issues.

His administration, he said, was already working to support and encourage the primary school children to attend school and concentrate on their studies, and he claimed that there are already big plans in place to address the issues that are affecting the primary school education sector.

Miqdad made note of the fact that the issue has been around for a while and needs to be resolved.

The Chairman reiterated his administration’s commitment to empowering youth through education by awarding full scholarships to 96 students for study at the Katsina State Institute of Technology and Management (KSITM) on Tuesday.

He urged the scholarship recipients to take advantage of the opportunity with vigor and determination, stressing that their parents’ and guardians’ assistance is still important throughout their academic journey.

We felt it was necessary to support parents who are unable to sponsor their children’s education in order to realize their aspirations to be meaningful citizens of their respective societies. We think that will change how they live.

96 students are receiving financial aid from this first batch. They will enroll in 15 of the institution’s courses. Because we have invested millions of naira in the project, the students should be diligent and on time.

Because we believe that education is the most important asset a person can ever have, we are appealing to our constituents to be patient with the government because we truly mean well to them. Katsina LG is not left behind, Miqdad remarked.

Isah Miqdad, the council’s chairman, is the one.

Alhaji Muhammad Isah, the governor of Katsina State, and Dikko Bala, the ministry’s director of finance and administration, praised the initiative as a model for effective governance.

US Democrats use obscure law to pressure Trump on Epstein case

Democrats in the United States have used an obscure law to stifle President Donald Trump’s administration and base in an effort to maintain the pressure on the president.

The disgraced financier, who passed away in federal prison in 2019 while awaiting a sex-trafficking trial, has been receiving increasingly strong demands from the White House.

The president reportedly “stole” employees from the spa at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, prompting questions to be raised about his previous relationships with Epstein on Tuesday when he claimed to have fallen for his ex-friend.

The Department of Justice rebuffed conspiracy theories about the alleged complicity of prominent Democrats that prominent members of Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement had been pushing for years when it claimed Epstein had died by suicide and had no “client list.”

The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Democrats from the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee wrote to the Justice Department asking for the documents contained in a “rule of five” provision of federal law.

Government departments are required to provide relevant information if requested by any five members of the Senate’s chief watchdog panel. The measure was introduced one century ago but is rarely used.

Even if the effort fails, it maintains the focus on an issue that has divided Trump’s party and caused the House of Representatives to be closed early.

In an effort to lessen the outcry, Trump’s administration demanded that two judges give grand jury indictments of Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell on sex trafficking charges.

Federal prosecutors said in late-night court filings on Tuesday that it would be appropriate to release the documents given the “abundant public interest” in the case of Epstein and Maxwell, a now-imprisoned British socialite.

Trump supporters were enraged

If Trump were to win, Trump threatened to release information about Epstein-related files, accusing Democrats of lying. Trump’s supporters are now angry that the Justice Department has now stated that the previously touted Epstein client list did not actually exist.

The department first requested on July 18 to release the grand jury testimony that witnesses gave years prior to the two cases, but Manhattan-based US District Judges Richard Berman and Paul Engelmayer requested that the government provide additional legal justifications.

Even if one or both of the judges made the transcripts public, it is unclear whether Epstein’s or his girlfriend Maxwell, who was convicted of sex trafficking in 2021, would learn anything new or noteworthy about them.

Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence in a Florida prison, has also been asked to testify.

If given immunity for her testimony, Maxwell’s attorney has stated that she would testify before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

According to a spokesman for the panel, “Ms. Maxwell’s attorney will respond to the Oversight Committee soon, but it won’t consider granting congressional immunity for her testimony.”

Democrats have also repeatedly attempted to use the votes on the Epstein files to support unrelated bills, prompting House Speaker Mike Johnson to send lawmakers home for the summer from his office last week to avoid having them succeed.

While campaigning, Donald Trump said he would release the Epstein documents. In a speech on Tuesday on the Senate floor, Schumer said, “He made that promise, but he hasn’t fulfilled it.”

According to the filings, an FBI agent was the only witness present at Epstein’s grand jury, according to the prosecution. According to the prosecution, the only witnesses before Maxwell’s grand jury were that same agent and a detective from the New York City Police Department.

In addition to the public testimony of sex trafficking victims, Epstein and Maxwell’s associates, and law enforcement officials, Maxwell’s four-week trial in 2021 drew.

US Q2 GDP growth masks broader economic downturn

The second quarter’s recovery was more than anticipated, but the data overstates the country’s overall health because domestic demand increased at a slower pace than expected and imports fell for the majority of the improvement.

According to Commerce Department data released on Wednesday, the US economy increased by 3 percent at an annualized rate in the second quarter, beating expectations from economists.

After almost stopping in the first quarter, the US President Donald Trump’s tariffs caused uncertainty, but the consumer spending growth increased moderately by 1.4 percent across both goods and services.

Imports dramatically decreased following the rush to stockpile in the first quarter in an effort to avoid tariffs, which contributed 5% to growth.

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt praised the report, saying that “President Trump has delivered on his promise to make America wealthy again. He has reduced America’s reliance on foreign products, boosted investment in the US, and created thousands of jobs.” There are no more valid reasons for Powell to cut the rates until the data is clear.

Trump has been pressing the US Federal Reserve to cut interest rates for months, but Jerome Powell has repeatedly said the Fed will wait to see how the economy develops as a result before deciding to cut its key interest rate.

Policy-initiated slowdown

Despite claims that US investment has increased, the data indicates otherwise as private sector investment decreased by 15.6% in the second quarter.

The GDP release from today only adds to the policy-initiated slowdown that is already underway. In a statement released to Al Jazeera, Skanda Amarnath, executive director of Employ America and former Federal Reserve economist, said that the top-line number appears superficially better but only as a result of some backlash from the tariff-driven irks to trade and inventories, which temporarily impacted output in Q1.

This is in addition to a 3.2% decrease in non-durable goods manufacturing, which increased at a slower pace of 1.3 percent, compared to 2.3 percent in the previous quarter.

“This second quarter estimate reflects the chaotic trade environment caused by this administration, which saw a decrease in imports and nondurable goods.” According to Gbenga Ajilore, chief economist at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, there has also been a decline in exports, particularly for cars, engines, and parts, as a result of the current tariffs on steel, aluminum, and cars.

Job growth also slowed, contrary to what the White House claims. The US Labor Department’s employment report from last month revealed that some industries, including wholesale trade, are impacted by tariffs. Friday is the day before the Labor Department’s July report is scheduled to be released. ADP’s private sector payroll report, which was released on Wednesday, showed 104, 000 new jobs added in the previous month and revised numbers from the previous month, which represents a 23 000 job decline.

Final sales to private domestic customers, also known as business and consumers, increased by 1.2 percent for the quarter, a slowdown from the 1.9 percent seen in the first quarter of the year, according to the gross domestic product (GDP) report.

In a statement released to Al Jazeera, Daniel Hornung, senior fellow at MIT and former deputy director of the National Economic Council, it is clear that tariffs and uncertainty were slowing the economy even during the first half of the year.
