Laura Dahlmeier: German biathlete dies in a climbing accident in Pakistan

A local government spokesman reported that German biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier, who had collapsed while climbing at a remote site reportedly had to be saved due to bad weather, had died on a mountain in northern Pakistan.

When Dahlmeier, a medal-winning Olympic climber, collided with a survivor while climbing Laila Peak in the Karakoram Mountains on Monday, she was struck by falling rocks.

According to Faizullah Faraq, a spokesman for the regional Gilgit-Baltistan government, rescuers were able to confirm Dahlmeier’s death on Wednesday, but because of unfavorable weather, they were unable to retrieve the body.

According to Faraq, any final decision regarding the body’s retrieval would be made in accordance with Dahlmeier’s family’s wishes. It was her wish that no one would risk their lives when they recovered her body after an accident, according to a statement on Dalhmeier’s Instagram page.

Dahlmeier’s parents were expressly condoled by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who wrote that she “was an exceptional sportswoman.” He brought up the moment he gave her the Silver Laurel Leaf, the highest award in German sport, shortly after she won her first gold medal at the 2018 Olympics.

According to him, Laura Dahlmeier served as our nation’s ambassador for the world and served as a model for peaceful, content, and fair coexistence across borders.

Authorities launched the rescue mission on Monday after Dahlmeier’s climbing partner, Marina Eva, received a distress signal on Tuesday and managed to reach base camp with assistance from rescuers.

According to the statement on Dahlmeier’s Instagram page, the partner of hers had attempted to save her for several hours, but it was in vain due to the challenging terrain and persistent rockfall. According to the statement, “Her partner, who could no longer discern any signs of life, ultimately decided to leave the danger zone and resume her descent.”

No one should risk their lives in a situation like this, according to Dahlmeier’s express wish, which was later reiterated in the statement, pleading for that wish to be honored. The rescue team and climbers, who made her rescue possible, were praised by Dahlmeier’s family members.

Foreign climbers who died while attempting to summit mountains in Pakistan are typically rescued at the families’ request, but if the family declines to rescue them, the remains are left where they were.

According to her management team in Germany, Dahlmeier, age 31, was injured at a height of about 5,700 meters (18,700 feet) on Monday at noon.

Since the end of June, Dahlmeier and friends have been visiting the area. The 6, 069-metre (20, 000-foot) Laila Peak was the second peak on her tour after she climbed the 6, 287-metre (20, 626-foot) Great Trango Tower on July 8.

According to Faraq, military helicopters were on standby for any rescue, but due to bad weather, they were unable to deploy. According to him, two Americans and two climbers have been attempting the same ascent that Dahlmeier did in an effort to join the rescue operation.

According to her website, Dahlmeier won 20 World Cup competitions, seven gold medals, three silver, and five bronze medals at the 2016-17 World Championships.

In 2018, she won gold in the individual competition and gold medals in the sprint and pursuit events at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

At the age of 25, Dahlmeier ended her biathlon career. After deciding to end her biathlon career, she returned to the German Alps’ Garmisch-Partenkirchen and began mountaineering expeditions. She volunteered for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen mountain rescue team and earned a state-certified mountain and ski guide designation since 2023.

In northern Pakistan, avalanches and sudden weather changes cause accidents frequently among climbers who attempt to scale mountains each year.

We’ve wanted a child for so long – Joyce-Butchers

The timing of their pregnancy, according to Jasmine Joyce-Butchers, is irrelevant because she and her husband Alisha have “wanted a baby for so long.”

After Alisha missed the Six Nations, the Wales duo made the announcement that they were “keeping a little secret” in May.

The 28-year-old flanker will undoubtedly miss the Rugby World Cup, which begins in England in less than three weeks.

“Everyone was asking Alisha, “Why now, why now?” “,” Jasmine, who will cap her 50th game against Australia on Friday, said.

After a challenging first trimester, the couple who got married in December 2023 decided to wait and are now anticipating having their son in November.

She obviously has a bravery, and it’s very selfless of her to carry what she has lost both to the World Cup and to her professional career, Jasmine said.

“But we’ve been looking for a child for a long time, and I believe we would have had one child long ago if one of us hadn’t played rugby.”

We’re over the moon that we’ve had such a wonderful opportunity to raise a child and introduce him to the world.

Further on, Jasmine claims that Donna Rose and her daughter Donna Rose would have a dream to welcome their son onto the field during the Six Nations.

She said, “It would be pretty cool if Alishia and I could still be playing; I’m hoping Alisha recovers quickly and gets back in shape.”

That would be pretty special because we’ll have Joyce-Butchers on our jerseys.

The Welsh Rugby Union’s new performance maternity program has been introduced to Alisha for the first time in a professional capacity.

I believe they have largely adhered to England’s maternity policy, Jasmine said.

Abbie Ward, an England lock and Bristol Bears team-mate, trialed that out, and I can tell you she was very impressed.

Alisha can’t fault it because it has been outstanding so far. Jamie, our S&amp, C [strength and conditioning coach], has been leading her program, and she wants to do more and more every day, but Jamie says, “You’re carrying a child, chill out.”

Wales will play their final warm-up test on Friday before their World Cup opener against Scotland on August 23 while three-time Olympian Jasmine is currently in Sydney.

Alisha is currently decorating the nursery while returning from Wales.

I hope she does well with “She won’t show me, it’s a surprise,” as Jasmine said, which is typically my strong suit.

However, Jasmine, who has started a new hobby while touring, wants to add her own personal touches.

I’ve been making tiny crochet things. She joked that she had done a dinosaur that didn’t look like a dinosaur and a little bee that looked like a bee.

Although I don’t normally crochet, I enjoy spending a lot of time here and on the plane.

Ghana Cuts Benchmark Interest Rates By 3% As Inflation Eases

As the West African nation recovers from a severe economic crisis, Ghana’s central bank cut its benchmark interest rate by 3% on Wednesday as a result of easeling inflationary pressures.

The Bank of Ghana announced a benchmark rate reduction of 28% to 25%, the first rate reduction in more than a year, as the cedi currency’s value recovered against the dollar.

Johnson Pandit Asiama, the bank’s governor, said, “We continue to support our price stability commitment while establishing the conditions for sustainable growth.”

UPDATED: MPC Retains Interest Rate At 27.5%

In Ghana, the country’s main producer of cocoa and gold, inflation eased in June to 13.7 percent, the sixth monthly decline in a row.

Since the beginning of 2025, the cedi has increased by more than 40% against the US dollar, thanks to stronger external buffers, waning exports, and growing investor confidence.

The government has made progress in its economic reforms and debt restructuring since January when President John Mahama took the oath of office amid economic unrest, according to the International Monetary Fund earlier this month.

Food inflation decreased as well, but overall inflation remained above average in July, at 16.3%.

Despite the advancement, many regular Ghanaians are still in need of assistance as living expenses continue to rise.

The cost of making a pot of jollof rice, a West African staple of rice, vegetables, and meat, has increased from 278 cedis in January 2023 to 420 cedis ($26 to $40), according to a “Jollof Index” from SBM Intelligence, a Lagos-based consultancy.

Cat Deeley ‘terrified’ over shooter scare that prompted UK return before marriage split

When Patrick Kielty and one of their sons were involved in a shooter scare in a US shopping mall, Cat Deeley has mentioned on occasion that they lived in the US.

Presenter Cat Deeley said that her husband Patrick Kielty and one of their sons getting caught up in a shooter scare was a “catalyst” for them deciding to leave the US. They later moved back to the UK after the “terrifying” incident.

Cat, 48, and Patrick, 54, who announced their separation this week, returned to London with their two children back in 2020. The former couple, who have been married since 2012, had previously lived in Los Angeles for years.

The family’s relocation is said to have been prompted by Patrick and their eldest son Milo, who was three at the time, ending up in a “really scary” situation, with Cat’s comments about the experience resurfacing recently. It comes amid the news that Cat found moving back to London “really hard” despite her having concerns about her life in LA.

Cat spoke about the mall incident in an interview published in 2019. Speaking to the Telegraph just “a month or so” after it happened, she said: “They had been in a Shake Shack in Century City Mall and there was a shooter scare.”

She claimed that the mall’s residents were urged to urinate behind the counter or be “pushed” into the restrooms. She also claimed that there were screams and crying. The FBI showed up with guns as they were all hiding, Cat continued.

In the end, she’s said, “Paddy kept Milo calm because he didn’t really know what was going on,” and she later claimed that her three-year-old had experienced that.

She’s since spoken on the incident on other occasions too, including in an interview with You magazine in 2020. She recalled: “They shut down the centre. I got a call from Paddy, saying, ‘They’re taking us out through the fire exits but nobody can get to their car. If we walk to a junction, can you come and get us?'”

Cat said that she hadn’t understood the “enormity” of the situation as her husband was trying to keep their son calm, adding that he distracted him with Peppa Pig on his phone. She said: “As I was driving I began to see helicopters, news vans, firemen and SWAT squads.” She described the situation as “terrifying” but said her son “didn’t properly understand”.

Cat claimed that the incident led to their return to the UK later that year while speaking on ITV’s Lorraine. She remarked, “It was a bit of the catalyst.” She said, “[Paddy] and Milo were stranded in a shopping center, and] I had to go pick them up.”

Cat continued, “I wasn’t sure where they were entirely.” There were news crews, police vans, and helicopters. For me, it was terrifying. Everyone was okay and safe, I suppose, but it was terrifying for me.

She did, however, claim that the couple “always” intended to relocate their children to the UK so they could be closer to grandparents and other relatives. You don’t get those special moments back again, Cat said. We therefore had always believed that we would bring them back to make sure everyone in the family and friends knew us.

And speaking to the Sunday Times last year, Cat said that she found the experience to be “really scary”. The outlet reported that there had been rumours of a shooter in the area but that it turned out to be over a suspect package.

Cat responded, “I found that incredibly frightening.” She continued in the interview, “Then we’d go to schools and they’d say, “This is the safe room and this is the drill if we have a live shooter on the premises.” Very, very challenging.

Jess Glynne slams the White House as they use her song for ‘sick’ social media post

One of the most contentious tweets in recent memory, singer Jess Glynne, who used her voiceover in a travel advertisement, has criticized the White House.

British singer Jess Glynne has taken aim at the White House following the American admiration using one of her most iconic songs in a recent controversial social media post.

On Tuesday, the official Twitter /X account for the White House used the voiceover used in an advert for travel company Jet 2 to seemingly mock a group of migrants being deported. The audio, which is currently trending online and generating many memes, features Jess’ song Hold My Hand.

The viral TikTok sound begins with Jess singing her 2015 before voice actress, Zoe Lister delivers the soundbite “nothing beats a Jet2 holiday.”

The White House joined the many content creators and businesses that used the voiceover from a British airline ad in a contentious move to go viral earlier this week.

A GlobalX aircraft, a carrier frequently used by ICE, was shown in the post showing handcuffed undocumented people being led by obscured Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

When ICE books you a one-way Jet2 holiday to deportation, the provocative tweet was followed by the following statement. Nothing can compare to “it”!”

Amid the backlash to the poor taste tweet from the official account for the residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States Donald Trump, Hold My Hand singer Jess has revealed her disgust at the post.

Sharing a screenshot of the offending tweet, Jess told her Instagram followers: “This post honestly makes me sick. My music is about love, unity, and spreading positivity – never about division or hate.”

In response to Jess’ post, a Twitter user wrote online that “I need her AND Jet2 to sue him separately for the maximum amount of money.” Her music is intended to bring healing, not hatred. Another poem was written, “Love wins every time.”

“Good,” a third wrote. Artists must guard their work from being propaganda. White house probably thought they were cute, but it only revealed how out-of-touch they are, lol.

President Trump departed Scotland on Tuesday as his five-day visit came to an end, with Air Force One taking off from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray.

The president concluded his trip by opening a new golf course at his resort in Menie, Aberdeenshire, on Tuesday morning. After playing on the new course, he flew by helicopter to the RAF base.

During his visit, he had earlier stayed at his other Scottish resort at Turnberry in South Ayrshire, where he enjoyed several rounds of golf. Despite the mostly private nature of the trip, he hosted Sir Keir Starmer at both resorts on Monday.

EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen also took part in a meeting with him at Turnberry on Sunday. As Trump cut the ribbon on the new course in Aberdeenshire, he said he would play a quick round before returning to Washington to “put out fires all over the world”.

In front of a crowd that included golfers, football players, Scottish First Minister John Swinney, and Labour leader Anas Sarwar, the US president teed off.

The US president said, “We started with a beautiful piece of land, but we made it much more beautiful,” just before the New Course’s first ball. Today, I’m eager to play it.

We’ll play it very quickly, and then I return to DC where we spread out fires all over the world. You know we put an end to the war when we did one yesterday. We’ve had enough wars to end them. That is much more crucial than golfing. It’s much more significant than I would like, to be honest.

Prior to the course opening, the president and First Minister Swinney had a more formal meeting on Tuesday evening. The situation in Gaza and the Scotch whisky tariffs were the topics of this meeting.
