Bayer Leverkusen have signed defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in a £35m deal.
The 22-year-old centre-back has joined the German Bundesliga club on a five-year contract.
Quansah was part of the England side that won the European Under-21 Championship by beating Germany in the final on Saturday.
Newcastle wanted to sign Quansah last summer, as part of a deal to send winger Anthony Gordon to Liverpool, but the Reds turned down the proposal.
As Quansah is a homegrown player, the fee Liverpool received from Leverkusen will be recorded as ‘pure’ profit with regards to profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
Quansah came through the Liverpool academy and made 58 appearances for the club, scoring three goals.
He helped the Reds win the League Cup in 2024 and made 13 league appearances last season as Arne Slot’s side won the Premier League.
“He has already made an impressive impact in a Liverpool defence dominated by world-class players,” said Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes.
“With Jarell, our defence gains significant dynamism, pace and toughness in tackling, and he’s another very important building block for the future.”
Liverpool are interested in Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, amid uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate’s future.
Australia has announced plans to tighten oversight of childcare facilities after a man in Melbourne was charged with dozens of sexual offences against children in his care.
The moves come after police in the southern state of Victoria announced on Tuesday that they had charged a 26-year-old childcare worker with more than 70 child sex offences, including rape.
The man, identified as Joshua Dale Brown, is accused of abusing eight victims, aged between five months and two years, at a childcare centre in Melbourne’s western suburbs.
Police have said they are also investigating evidence of abuse at a second childcare centre in the northwest of the city.
Authorities say the accused worked at 20 childcare facilities in total during an eight-year span that lasted until May.
Health authorities in Victoria have recommended that 1, 200 children linked to facilities where the man worked be tested for infectious diseases as a precautionary measure.
On Wednesday, Australian Education Minister Jason Clare said he would press ahead with legislation to strip funding from childcare facilities that do not meet adequate safety standards and examine other potential measures, including strengthening background checks for those working with minors.
“Any Australian who heard the news from Victoria yesterday would be sickened by what they heard”, Clare said during a news conference in Sydney.
“And for every parent that is directly affected by this in Victoria, they would be frightened and they’d be angry”.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said she would introduce a state register of childcare workers and ban personal devices at childcare centres from September.
Allan said her government would also commence an “urgent review” to examine options for improving safety in the sector, including potentially installing security cameras in childcare facilities.
“We will adopt every recommendation of the review and implement them as quickly as possible”, Allan said in a statement.
“Following yesterday, I know too many families are suffering unbearable pain and uncertainty. I cannot imagine what they are going through”.
The latest safety scare to engulf Australia’s childcare sector comes less than a year after a Queensland man pleaded guilty to sexually abusing dozens of girls at childcare centres in one of the worst paedophile cases in the country’s history.
United States media giant Paramount has agreed to pay $16m to settle a lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump over the editing of a 2024 interview aired by CBS, its subsidiary.
The payout announced on Wednesday will go towards Trump’s planned presidential library, with Paramount stating the funds would not be given to him “directly or indirectly”.
The case stems from a broadcast of 60 Minutes featuring then-Vice President Kamala Harris, which Trump alleged had been deceptively edited to benefit the Democratic Party before the 2024 election. Trump initially sought $10bn in damages, later raising the claim to $20bn.
While CBS had described the lawsuit as “completely without merit” and sought its dismissal, the case proceeded to mediation in April. “The settlement does not include a statement of apology or regret”, the company statement added.
As part of the settlement, 60 Minutes will begin releasing interview transcripts with future presidential candidates following their broadcast, except where legal or national security concerns apply.
Trump had alleged that the edited Harris interview – in which her comments on Israel’s war on Gaza appeared inconsistent – violated the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act, which makes it illegal to use false, misleading or deceptive acts in commerce.
Legal analysts and press freedom groups have raised concerns over Trump’s use of consumer protection laws against media outlets, warning it may be a tactic to sidestep constitutional protections afforded to journalists, who can only be held liable for defamation against public figures if they say something they knew or should have known was false.
Neither the White House nor Trump’s legal team has commented on the settlement.
The settlement follows a decision by Disney-owned ABC News in December to settle a defamation suit with a $15m donation to Trump’s library and issue a public apology over inaccurate on-air comments.

Real Madrid, a giant of Spain, defeated Juventus 1-0 on Tuesday to set up a Club World Cup quarter-final match against Borussia Dortmund, who defeated Monterrey to defeat them.

At the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami earlier, youngster Gonzalo Garcia scored his third goal of the season to give Madrid a 1-0 lead.
Real Madrid wins the Club World Cup Quarter-Finals, and Gonzalo leads them past Juventus.
Under the new coach, Xabi Alonso’s Madrid side put together an impressive display, and Kylian Mbappe’s return from illness as a substitute increased that performance.
The second half produced a lot of chances, but their goalkeeper was really good, according to Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois.
With Igor Tudor’s Juventus beginning strong but Real’s came out on top, the first half was a finely balanced contest.
After 54 minutes, Los Blancos found themselves on the end of the tunnel when Trent Alexander-Arnold crossed for Gonzalo.

Alonso made the decision to introduce Mbappe to the 62, 149 crowd, but Juve pressed for an equaliser with no clear openings.
The coach of Madrid both applauded the team’s performance, including that of Gonzalo, who had been compared to the then-great Raul, and also suggested that Mbappe might be ready for a bigger role in the upcoming game.
Alonso said, “We will keep watching him… I think he will do a lot better quarters.”
Alonso continued, “I’m happy Real produced the necessary grit to grind out the result in the second half.”
The coach remarked, “We had to be patient, we had to mature into the game.”
You are aware that you must grit your teeth and carry out your obligations, just like the players and I are. And ultimately, we had to hold on a little bit, which I’m happy about.
Tudor, the head of Juve, claimed that as the game progressed, his team felt worn out.
“Two of them asked to be substituted in the end. You can’t do that, he said, explaining his reasons, but there was an exorbitant drowsiness.
According to Tudor, “the heat and humidity are what burns energy, but there is the tension of the game as well,” adding that they were approaching the end of a long season.
Ramos and Dortmund disagree,
Dortmund defeated Monterrey in a close encounter in Atlanta thanks to Guirassy’s brace, setting them up to face a Madrid side that defeated them in the 2024 Champions League final.
Dortmund coach Niko Kovac stated to the media, “Real has a great team, they have many good individual players.”
“I believe we will have a good chance of succeeding if we put everything on the pitch and perform it today.”
The Mexican side came close to scoring when a late Ramos header was just wide, but Guirassy doubled in the first half, but German Berterame curled one back for the Mexicans.
Guirassy told broadcaster DAZN, “I think I could have at least three goals, but I’m happy to have helped the team win.”
After struggling through several games in the blazing afternoon sun in the group stage, Dortmund were relieved to be at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and set a faster pace there.
Guirassy scored both of his goals as the Guinea international reached 37 for the season in all competitions.
Jobe Bellingham will be suspended for the game against his brother Jude’s Real Madrid side due to a booking.
However, after Monterrey opened the scoring in the second half, goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made several good save saves to keep Dortmund at bay.
Ramos attempted to liven up his penchant for late, decisive moments, like in Madrid’s 2014 Champions League triumph, by sending a header agonisingly wide in stoppage time.
Ramos, a proud supporter of his side’s efforts, told DAZN, “The crowd, our fans, and the people who understand football, they saw that the team gave everything.”
