Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs trial – Why the jury on passing notes could be a good sign for rapper

The fact the jury deliberating in the Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs trial sent two notes to the judge could be a good sign for the embattled rapper, it’s been claimed. The music mogul, 55, is currently awaiting his fate at the hands of 12 jurors as his sex-trafficking trial comes to a conclusion.

Jury deliberations commenced on Monday, but things took an unexpected turn when two notes were handed over to the presiding judge from the jury.

The first note revealed concerns from a juror about their ability to comprehend the extensive 61-page instructions delivered by the judge right before deliberations got underway.

Despite this, Judge Arun Subramanian was adamant that jurors should strictly adhere to his directions, even if it meant the deliberative process would be prolonged.

Hours later, the second note sought further explanation concerning the section on drug distribution within the instructions—a key point in Combs’ racketeering conspiracy charge. This request was addressed, and deliberations proceeded, with speculation that a verdict might come down by this afternoon (UK time).

Combs finds himself facing serious allegations including two counts of sex trafficking, two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, and one count of racketeering—all charges he vehemently denies. The music industry titan could be sentenced to life imprisonment if found guilty.

But Combs may be heartened by the jury’s note-passing. Mitch Epner, a New York-based lawyer and former prosecutor, argues that the notes may turn out to be good sign for Combs.

“First, it is unusual for the jurors to send a note to the judge this early, other than asking for logistical help. Second, this note indicates that there may already be a breakdown in the deliberative process,” he tells the BBC.

A conviction requires the full agreement of the jury panel. The reasons behind the unease concerning juror number 25, and their struggle to adhere to the judge’s guidance remain unrevealed.

Epner highlighted that while a juror can be dismissed for not engaging in deliberations, they cannot be ousted solely for “having come to a fixed conclusion about the proper verdict”.

In the final arguments last week, both federal prosecutors and Combs’ defence team made their concluding attempts to sway the jury towards conviction or acquittal.

Assistant US Attorney Christy Slavik argued: “The defendant used power, violence and fear to get what he wanted. He thought that his fame, wealth and power put him above the law.”

She accused him of relying on a “close inner circle and a small army of personal staff, who made it their mission to meet the defendant’s every desire, promote his power and protect his reputation at all costs.”

However, Combs’ defence attorney Marc Agnifilo countered these claims, stating: “This isn’t about crime. It’s about money.” He pointed out that one of the accusers had also filed a civil lawsuit against Combs.

Agnifilo defended his client, saying: “He is not a racketeer. He is not a conspirator to commit racketeering. He is none of these things. He is innocent. He sits there innocent. Return him to his family, who have been waiting for him,” as he addressed the jury.

BBC boss Tim Davie was at Glastonbury during Bob Vylan’s ‘death to IDF’ chant

The BBC’s director-general was at Glastonbury Festival when Bob Vylan led chants of “Death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)” that were broadcast live. it is understood Tim Davie was on a visit to meet staff at the Somerset music event on Saturday afternoon and was informed after Bobby Vylan, one half of the British rap punk duo, led his audience in chants that also included “Free, free Palestine”.

The performance at the West Holts Stage was livestreamed by the BBC but the organisation later expressed regret for not stopping its broadcast of the “unacceptable” set.

A BBC spokesperson said: “The director-general was informed of the incident after the performance and at that point he was clear it should not feature in any other Glastonbury coverage.

The news of Mr Davie’s presence at the festival comes as the Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis berated the BBC for what he called “the airing of vile Jew-hatred” and the broadcaster’s “belated and mishandled response”.

The corporation has faced strong criticism for continuing to livestream the performance on iPlayer with on-screen warnings about discriminatory language.

Broadcasting regulator Ofcom saying it was “very concerned” by the decision and the Culture Secretary claimed the issue should have been foreseeable and constituted “a problem of leadership” for the BBC.

In a post on X, Sir Ephraim wrote: “This is a time of national shame.

“The airing of vile Jew-hatred at Glastonbury and the BBC’s belated and mishandled response, brings confidence in our national broadcaster’s ability to treat antisemitism seriously to a new low.

“It should trouble all decent people that now, one need only couch their outright incitement to violence and hatred as edgy political commentary, for ordinary people to not only fail to see it for what it is, but also to cheer it, chant it and celebrate it.

“Toxic Jew-hatred is a threat to our entire society.”

Irish rap trio Kneecap, including member Liam Og O hAnnaidh who appeared in court earlier this month charged with a terror offence, took to the stage directly after Bob Vylan and led chants of “Free Palestine”.

On Monday, Avon and Somerset Police said it had launched a probe into both performances after reviewing video footage and audio recordings, with a senior detective appointed to lead the investigation.

A police spokesman said: “This has been recorded as a public order incident at this time while our inquiries are at an early stage.

“The investigation will be evidence-led and will closely consider all appropriate legislation, including relating to hate crimes.”

In a statement on Monday, the BBC said: “Millions of people tuned in to enjoy Glastonbury this weekend across the BBC’s output but one performance within our livestreams included comments that were deeply offensive.

“The BBC respects freedom of expression but stands firmly against incitement to violence.

“The antisemitic sentiments expressed by Bob Vylan were utterly unacceptable and have no place on our airwaves.

“We welcome Glastonbury’s condemnation of the performance.

“The performance was part of a livestream of the West Holts stage on BBC iPlayer.

“The judgment on Saturday to issue a warning on screen while streaming online was in line with our editorial guidelines.

“In addition, we took the decision not to make the performance available on demand.

“The team were dealing with a live situation, but with hindsight we should have pulled the stream during the performance. We regret this did not happen.”

US deputy secretary of state Christopher Landau announced that Bob Vylan’s US visas had been revoked due to “their hateful tirade at Glastonbury”, with the duo scheduled to tour in Chicago, Brooklyn and Philadelphia in October.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy told the Commons on Monday the Government was “exasperated” with the “lack of account from the leadership” at the BBC.

Ms Nandy said the incident at Worthy Farm had raised “very, very serious questions at the highest levels of the BBC about the operational oversight and the way in which editorial standards are understood”, adding that she wanted to see “rapid action” from the broadcaster.

Glastonbury Festival organisers also condemned Bob Vylan’s chants, saying it was “appalled” by what was said on stage, adding “there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence”.

Bob Vylan formed in Ipswich in 2017 and have released four albums addressing issues such as racism, masculinity and class.

Bobby Vylan is the stage name of Pascal Robinson-Foster, 34, according to reports. His bandmate drummer uses the alias Bobbie Vylan.

In a statement posted to Instagram, he said: “Teaching our children to speak up for the change they want and need is the only way that we make this world a better place.

“As we grow older and our fire starts to possibly dim under the suffocation of adult life and all its responsibilities, it is incredibly important that we encourage and inspire future generations to pick up the torch that was passed to us.”

Troops Neutralise 10 Boko Haram Terrorists, Recover Weapons

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have neutralised 10 Boko Haram terrorists during a recent offensive on the terrorists’ enclave between Rann and Gamboru Ngala, very close to the Nigerian-Cameroon border.

This was as the military sustained its clearance operations at the Southern Lake Chad region.

Speaking to Channels Television in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, the Theatre Commander North-East Joint Task Force Operations Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, said several ammunition were recovered from the operations which took place at a border community, Manawaji.

Weapons like anti-aircraft ammunition and ordinance weapons believed to have been stolen in an earlier attack on Cameroon Defense Force were recovered during the clearance operations.

He said, “Our troops are intensifying sustained operations to clear the Southern lakes in the border communities.

“During this recent operation, the troops made contact with terrorists at a Cameroon border community, Manawaji, between Rann and Gamboru Ngala, and immediately engaged the terrorists leading to ten of them being neutralised while several weapons and ammunition including anti-aircraft ammunition were recovered.

“We suspect the anti-aircraft ammunition was stolen in an earlier attack on Cameroon Defense Force positioned in Cameroon. ”

How did Real Madrid legend Ramos end up playing in Mexico?

Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos playing in the knockout stages of a Fifa Club World Cup might not feel that noteworthy – except it is for Mexican club Monterrey.

It surprised many when the 39-year-old, considered one of football’s greatest centre-backs, rocked up at Monterrey in February.

With five goals – all headers and penalties – and a red card in his first 12 games for the club, he is already replaying all his greatest hits.

And the captain has led them to the last 16 of the Club World Cup, where they play Borussia Dortmund in Atlanta at 02:00 BST on Wednesday.

“I’d like to end my football career on a victorious note,” he told Fifa in the build-up to the tournament.

“That opportunity to easily contribute and play in these kinds of competitions is what made my competitive spirit kick in and convinced me to join the club.”

How did Monterrey sign Ramos?

Players do not come much more decorated than Ramos. His spell at Real Madrid, where he made 671 appearances, resulting in four Champions Leagues and five La Liga titles. Plus four Fifa Club World Cups.

He was a key cog in one of international football’s most dominant teams as he won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 during his 180-cap Spain career.

But by February 2025 he had not played competitive football for almost nine months, having ended his second spell at Sevilla at the end of 2024-25.

And so came the call from Monterrey, who are also known by their nickname of Rayados.

They are five-time champions of Mexico – and five-time Concacaf Champions League winners – including in 2021, which meant they would compete in this summer’s Club World Cup.

Ramos accepted the offer, a one-year deal to become Monterrey’s top earner.

Rayados president Jose Antonio Noriega spoke to the Athletic in February about how they persuaded Ramos to join.

“It’s a package deal. There is no single aspect, Sergio is not convinced by just one thing,” said Noriega, a former midfielder for Monterrey and Mexico.

“We are a team that fights for titles and that attracts Sergio. But surely that wouldn’t be enough.

“It’s a serious team with a good reputation and the city is nice. It’s an accumulation of things that Sergio found fulfilling. Also the fact that each year there are five championships and one of them this year is the Club World Cup, which is special.”

He added: “We knew there was a market for Sergio. We heard about the interest from San Diego FC, from some clubs in Brazil and some in Saudi Arabia.

“Let me tell you a metaphor – it’s like when you want to fall in love with a girl. The only way to make a girl fall in love is to be yourself. We were like that with Ramos.

How has Ramos got on in Mexico?

Ramos took the 93 shirt number for a fairly unique reason.

That was the minute of his header to force extra time in the 2013 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid – which his side went on to win to complete ‘La Decima’, their long-awaited 10th European title.

He went straight in as Rayados captain and has already ticked off all the things that defined him during his career.

In 12 games he has scored five goals – which takes his career goal tally to 145. Three headers and two penalties.

One of those goals was against Inter Milan in this tournament.

He has also managed a red card for kicking an opponent.

“It was obvious I couldn’t leave this league without a red card,” he wrote on social media with a winking emoji.

He has also been impressed by Monterrey’s fans.

“The passion of the fans has really blown me away,” he told Fifa.

“I had only ever visited the country on holiday, so I had a different perspective.

The Monterrey story

Monterrey fansGetty Images

Monterrey are not considered one of Mexico’s very biggest clubs – with nine clubs having won more titles.

But their average attendance in the Mexican league was higher than anyone else last season, 44,145.

Their owners are rich – Femsa is a multinational company based in Monterrey who are famous for their part in the drinks industry.

Before signing Ramos, fellow Spaniards Sergio Canales – who won 11 caps and played for Real Madrid – and Oliver Torres were already at the club.

Ramos, Torres, Jesus Corona and Lucas Ocampos have all played for Sevilla.

Not long before the tournament though, the focus was on the manager.

In April, midfielder Canales badly cut his leg after kicking a glass door following an argument with Martin Demichelis.

The following month Demichelis, the former Manchester City and Argentina defender, was sacked after losing in the Liga MX quarter-finals.

And in his place came Catalan Domenec Torrent, who was assistant manager to Pep Guardiola at Barcelona B, their first team, Bayern Munich and Manchester City before leaving in 2018 to become a manager.

These have been Torrent’s first three games in charge of Rayados, draws with Inter Milan and River Plate and a 4-0 win over Urawa Reds.

In that Inter game they made headlines for an unusual split wall for a free-kick – where they had two walls and a gap in between in front of the goalkeeper.

Anything else? Oh yes, Monterrey and Scottish side Dundee announced a link-up in November.
