French Open Title Is ‘One I Really Wanted’ — Gauff

After winning the French Open title against Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday, Coco Gauff claimed a maiden trophy was “one I really wanted.”

The 21-year-old defeated the world number one at Roland Garros in a battle of 6-7 (5 / 7), 6-2, and 6-4.

According to American star Gauff, “I really wanted this because I do believe this was one of the tournaments that I thought I had the best chance of winning,” he said.

So I just started to feel regrets and other emotions if I didn’t complete my career and didn’t complete at least one of them.

I just had to go for it and make my best effort to get through the match today when I was playing Aryna. ”

Gauff was devastated when she lost to Iga Swiatek in the 2022 French Open final as a teenager and; had made it to the quarter-finals in Paris at least once in the previous four years.

The world number two, who also defeated Sabalenka in the 2023 US Open final, also came back from a set down to defeat Sabalenka in the final.

I recall watching her closely as the anthem was played, and I was also quite emotional when the Polish anthem was played. I thought, “Wow, this is such a cool moment.”

I kind of had those reflections when the (USA) anthem was playing today. ”

Not a day for great tennis

Gauff is the first woman to defeat a world number one in a set-dancing final since 2005’s Venus Williams defeated Lindsay Davenport at Wimbledon.

After losing final matches to Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini in both the Madrid and Italian Opens, respectively, she won her first title since winning the WTA Finals trophy last year.

The wind swayed after the roof was opened just before the start of the match, according to Sabalenka, who described the situation as “terrible.”

Sincerely, Gauff remarked, “It wasn’t a day for great tennis.”

There are too many people out there today who could play great tennis, but it’s both a sport and an outdoor activity. ”

Spike Lee, an ardent New York Knicks fan, was present to celebrate with Gauff after her victory, as did American filmmaker Spike Lee.

In reference to the Knicks’ defeat by the Indiana Pacers last weekend in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, she said, “I wanted to tell him, I had to do it. Even though the Knicks didn’t win, I gave him something to cheer for.”

In a 77-minute first set with eight breaks, both players struggled with serve especially.

If Swiatek had not ended the Pole’s title defense in the semi-finals, Sabalenka claimed that she would have defeated Gauff, but the actual champion refrained from believing that.

I disagree with that, I think. Gauff, who defeated Swiatek 6-1, 6-1 in the Madrid semi-finals last month, looked at the trophy she was holding next to her.

Iga and Iga were not in any doubt when I played her last time, but I did so in straight sets.

Because anything can actually happen, I don’t believe that is fair. ”

Mel B and Eddie Murphy are said to be “understanding” and supportive of their child Angel who has changed pronouns to “he/him”.

The Spice Girls star and the American actor embarked on a whirlwind romance in 2006 and their bond was so strong that they went on to have each other’s autographs tattooed on their thighs. After months of dating, Eddie proposed and Mel fell pregnant – and they welcomed Angel Iris Murphy Brown in April 2007.

The pair then broke up and a bitter custody battle ensued, with Mel filing a paternity suit against Eddie to legally establish he was Angel’s father and accused him of not paying for child support. However, both parents are now said to have a close relationship with Angel, who turned 18 this year.

It has now emerged that Angel, who was born female, changed pronouns to “he/him” – and confirmed it in his Instagram biography. According to a source who spoke to Mail Online, both Mel and Eddie are supporting Angel: “It’s a decision Angel made and Mel has been understanding, likewise Eddie. There was no big event to mark it. Angel just wanted it to be known what pronouns are now suitable.”

Marking Angel’s 18th birthday in April, Scary Spice wrote: “HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY ANGEL !!! I cannot believe youre 18 You are so special and so bright and so talented!! I couldnt be prouder of watching you grow and become the person you are but youll forever be my babyyyy I hop you keep chasing yor dreams and be kind to everyone around you like you always have been my Angel Love you always.”

In the comment section of Mel’s birthday post, Angel clarified that they now use “he/him” pronouns. “That second picture is exactly how old she was when I met her!! The only baby to look like she worked out at the gym! Cutest little thing,” one commenter wrote, but another follower corrected them, saying, “*him / *he”. After someone asked the person how they knew Angel’s pronouns, Mel’s child replied, “they are on my profile!”

In addition to Angel, Mel is also mum to Phoenix and Madison, who have different fathers. Mel welcomed Phoenix with the dancer Jimmy Gulzar in 1999, Angel with Eddie in 2007 and then Madison with the singer’s then-husband Stephen Belafonte four years later. Eddie also has nine other children and is said to have a close relationship with all of them, as parenthood is his priority.

During an interview with Vanity Fair in 2020, the actor said: “My career, or what I am as an artist, that’s not at the centre of my life. At the centre of my life is my family and my kids. That’s the principal relationship, and everything comes after that. I have 10 kids, and I’m present, and I’m part of their lives.

“You got to have some kind of balance with career and personal life. I started making movies when I was 20, and I auditioned for SNL when I was 18, so that’s 40 years ago. So I had a little crossroads where it was like, it’s time to back off, and sit on the couch and just be dad.”

The Mirror has contacted representatives for Mel B and Eddie Murphy for comment.

Israel kills more than 70 in Gaza, including 16 in bombing family building

At least 75 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli-led raids across Gaza, and rescuers are frantically searching for bodies under the rubble following the bombing of a residential building in Gaza City, which the civil defense described as a “full-fledged massacre.”

Prior to Saturday’s attack on the home in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City, which left at least 16 people dead, including women and children, the military did not give a “warn, no alert,” according to a spokesman for the Palestinian Civil Defense, Mahmoud Basel, who spoke to Al Jazeera.

According to Basel, who added that about 85 people were thought to be trapped beneath the rubble, “this is truly a full-fledged massacre… a building full of civilians.”

A displaced Palestinian at the site, Hamed Keheel, recalled that the attack had occurred on the second day of the Eid al-Adha festival, and that “we woke up to the strikes, destruction, yelling, rocks hitting us.”

He claimed that this is his occupation. We wake up to carry women’s and children’s bodies from under rubble, not to cheer our children and dress them up.

Hassan Alkhor, a resident from the Abu Sharia family, informed Al Jazeera that the building is their home. He prayed, “May God hold the Israeli forces and [Prime Minister] Netanyahu accountable.”

According to a report in the Times of Israel on Saturday, the Israeli military claimed to have killed Asaad Abu Sharia, the Mujahideen Brigades leader, who it claimed had participated in the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Hamas confirmed the killing in a statement posted on Telegram, claiming Ahmed Abu Sharia’s brother had also been killed in the attack, which it claimed was “part of a series of brutal massacres against civilians.”

“A few cups of rice for our hungry kids.”

In addition to the latest deadly incident involving Israeli operations that have resulted in the deaths of 118 people and others have been missing in less than two weeks, Israeli forces also killed at least eight Palestinians waiting nearby a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)-run aid distribution facility in southern Gaza on Saturday.

Samir Abu Hadid, a resident of Gaza, reported to the AFP news agency that hundreds of people had gathered near the aid facility’s al-Alam roundabout.

The Israeli [forces] opened fire from armored vehicles stationed nearby, firing into the air and then at civilians, according to Abu Hadid.

After visiting the aid station to get “a handful of rice for our starving children,” a woman claimed her husband had been killed in the attack.

I begged him not to leave because he claimed he felt like he was on the verge of death. She said, “He insisted on finding anything to feed our children.”

In late May, the GHF, a shady United States-backed private organization that Israel has established to distribute aid under the protection of its troops and security contractors, started operating.

Critics claim that the organization uses weapons to aid in achieving its stated goals of ethnic cleansing large swathes of Gaza and gaining control over the entire enclave, in violation of humanitarian principles of neutrality.

Hamas “direct threats” against its operations, GHF claimed on Saturday, making it impossible to distribute any humanitarian aid. According to a statement, “These threats made it impossible to proceed today without risking innocent lives.” Hasso informed Reuters news agency that it had no knowledge of these “alleged threats.”

The UN, which has resisted cooperating with the GHF, has warned that the majority of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are in danger of starving after an 11-week Israeli blockade, with the rate of young children with acute malnutrition nearly tripling.

“Lost generation for the future”

In the wake of the looming famine, it became clear that health officials in the region had documented more than 300 miscarriages over the course of an 80-day period.

With the availability of basic medical supplies like iron supplements and prenatal vitamins, expecting mothers are more likely to experience miscarriage and premature births.

According to Brenda Kelly, a consultant obstetrician at Oxford University Hospital, Gaza is “losing a future generation of children,” making reference to a “staggering rise” in stillbirths, miscarriages, and pre-term births.

One of the main causes of miscarriages and stillbirths is “what we’re seeing now is the direct result of Israel’s weaponizing of hunger in Gaza,” she said.

Grave stress and psychological trauma, repeated displacement, and a lack of safe shelter all contribute to severe malnutrition in pregnant women, she said.

French Open 2025 – men’s singles final

Date: Sunday, 8 June Time: 14:00 BST Venue: Roland Garros

The latest chapter in the burgeoning rivalry between the two brightest talents in men’s tennis will play out on one of the sport’s grandest stages for the first time in Sunday’s French Open final.

World number one Jannik Sinner and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz meet in a tantalising Paris showpiece, having already captured seven major titles between them.

The first Grand Slam final to feature two players born in 2000s heralds the beginning of a new era in the men’s game – but only one can leave Paris with their perfect record in major finals intact.

“It doesn’t get any bigger now. It’s a special moment for me and for Carlos,” said Italy’s Sinner.

‘The rivalry the sport needs’

This will be the first French Open men’s final between two players aged 23 or under in more than three decades.

Spanish 22-year-old Alcaraz has already amassed four Grand Slams – including beating Alexander Zverev in five sets to win last year’s Roland Garros final.

All three Grand Slam triumphs for Sinner, 23, have come on hard courts – and he is seeking to become only the sixth man in the Open era to win three consecutive majors.

Carlos Alcaraz leads the head-to-head against Jannik Sinner 7-4

Whatever the outcome on Sunday, Alcaraz and Sinner will have carved up the past six majors between them as they assert themselves in the post ‘Big Three’ era.

Speaking after his semi-final loss to Sinner, the 38-year-old Novak Djokovic said of the pair: “They’re definitely great for tennis, both of them.

“I think their rivalry is something that our sport needs, no doubt.

“The way they are playing and approaching tennis life, I think they are going to have very successful careers in the next years.

‘It’s fun and not fun’ – Sinner’s kryptonite

Following his US Open and Australian Open triumphs, Sinner goes into the French Open final on a 20-match winning streak at the majors.

The youngest man to reach three consecutive Grand Slam singles finals since Pete Sampras in 1994, his unshakeable consistency combined with devastating precision means he is yet to drop a set in Paris this year.

Sinner v Alcaraz - a list of their past meetings

Since the start of his title-winning run at the China Open in September 2023, Sinner – who served a three-month doping suspension between February and May – has lost just nine of the 120 matches he has contested.

But four of those defeats have come in his past four meetings with Alcaraz, including in straight sets in the Italian Open final on clay last month.

Asked if he enjoys the challenge of facing Alcaraz, whom he trails 7-4 in the overall head-to-head, Sinner joked: “It’s fun and not fun.

“I think we try to push ourselves in the best possible way.

Alcaraz prepared for ‘beautiful suffering’

Following in the footsteps of Rafael Nadal as the second Spaniard to reach five major men’s singles finals, Alcaraz could emulate his childhood hero by winning his fifth major at the exact same age: 22 years, one month and three days.

The two-time Wimbledon champion has taken just 82 matches to reach 70 wins at slams – quicker than all but Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe, who took 81.

He improved his record on clay this season to 21 wins in 22 matches – including title wins in Monte Carlo and Rome – after Lorenzo Musetti retired with injury when trailing in their semi-final.

“Most of the time it is just about suffering,” Alcaraz said when asked what it would take to beat either Sinner or Djokovic after winning Friday’s first semi-final.

“But my favourite thing is that it gives me the feedback of how I can be a better player.

“I think that’s important, and that’s beautiful. Even if I win or not, it gives you a lot of stats and feedback.”
