Israeli gunfire, strikes kill 120 Palestinians in Gaza, many at aid sites

Israeli forces have killed more than 120 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip in the last 24 hours, medical sources have told Al Jazeera, including dozens of hungry aid seekers, as Israel continues to relentlessly bombard the besieged territory, with the overall war death toll now surpassing a staggering 55,000 people.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said 57 people trying to access aid were killed and more than 363 injured by Israel since Wednesday morning. The distribution points are operated by the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US- and Israeli-backed drive in tightly Israeli-controlled zones.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry has described the GHF aid system as a “dramatic success” despite mass killings and scenes of utter human desperation, triggering widespread international opprobrium.

The isolated aid sites – set up in Rafah and in the Netzarim Corridor – have been branded “human slaughterhouses” as more than 220 people have been killed while desperately trying to secure meagre food parcels for their families since GHF started operating on May 27.

The Israeli army has admitted its troops fired “warning shots” in the area of the Netzarim Corridor, where the majority of aid seekers were reported killed overnight.

Gaza’s Government Media Office said the Israeli military “is deliberately creating chaos in the Gaza Strip by perpetuating a policy of starvation and deliberately targeting and killing starving people seeking food”.

The United Nations also condemned the killings and has refused to supply aid via the foundation, which uses private contractors with Israeli military backup in what the UN says is a breach of humanitarian standards.

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) called the aid distribution model “a distraction from the ongoing atrocities and a waste of resources”.

It reiterated that the humanitarian community in Gaza, including UNRWA, is “ready and has the experience and expertise to reach people in need”.

Israel has banned UNRWA and other legacy aid agencies with decades of experience from operating in Gaza, where a famine looms, while it maintains a punishing aid blockade.

Chris Newton, a senior analyst at the International Crisis Group, said Israel’s chaotic and violence-plagued aid system is deliberately structured to keep Palestinians desperate and hungry while pushing them southward.

Newton told Al Jazeera that GHF’s stated aim of providing 1,750 calories worth of food per person per day is well short of the minimum standard for crisis situations.

That amount of food is “closer to the ration given in a starvation experiment run in the 1940s in the US than it is to Israel’s own previous 2008 red line for the minimum calories needed to avoid malnutrition in Gaza,” said Newton.

‘A war on children’

Elsewhere in Gaza on Wednesday, dozens of other people were killed by Israeli gunfire and strikes across the coastal territory.

An Israeli attack in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighbourhood killed at least seven people, according to local medical sources.

Three Palestinians, including two children, were killed when an Israeli strike hit a home in northern Gaza’s Jabalia, while in central Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp, three more Palestinians were killed in an Israeli drone strike, which wounded several others, according to the news agency Wafa.

In southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, Israeli air strikes on displacement tents in the Tiberias camp killed four Palestinians, including a child, and wounded others, Wafa said.

Children have borne much of the brunt of Israel’s ongoing assault. Gaza’s Health Ministry said the total death toll from Israel’s war has risen to 55,104 since October 7, 2023 – most of them women and children.

Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Gaza City, said al-Shifa Hospital, like many other health facilities, has been reduced in terms of its capacity to provide proper healthcare to people, let alone children.

UNICEF spokesperson James Elder, who was at al-Shifa, said, “Everywhere we go, this is the same scenario.

“Despite doctors’ most incredible efforts, we see children being brutalised, burned … because it’s a war on children.”

Arrest of Madleen crew ‘arbitrary, unlawful’

In the meantime, Israel continues to hold some of the crew members and activists who were on board the Madleen aid vessel trying to break the Israeli siege. Israeli forces intercepted the vessel and its 12 crew members in international waters off Gaza earlier this week.

While it deported four of the members, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, eight others remain in detention.

The group Adalah–The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel called on Israel to immediately release the remaining detained volunteers and return them either “to the Madleen to resume their humanitarian mission to Gaza or to their countries of origin”.

At least two of the detainees were placed in solitary confinement, according to their lawyers, though one – Rima Hassan – has since been returned to the main prison wing.

Brazilian national Thiago Avila was placed in solitary at Ayalon Prison due to an “ongoing hunger and thirst strike” that began this week. “He has also been treated aggressively by prison authorities, although this has not escalated to physical assault,” Adalah said.

Hassan, a French citizen and member of the European Parliament, was also temporarily placed in isolation in Neve Tirza Prison after writing “Free Palestine” on a wall in another prison called Givon.

The UN’s special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has decried the arrests as “arbitrary” and “unlawful” and also called for the detainees’ immediate release.

The Israeli military says it recovered the bodies of Yair Yaakov and a second captive, whose name has not yet been released, in a joint operation in Khan Younis with the Israeli intelligence agency Shin Bet.

Surrey suffer first defeat as Bears beat Durham

Rex Features

A 92-run opening stand followed by taking early wickets in the reply helped The Blaze end Surrey’s 100% start to the women’s T20 Blast at The Oval.

Marie Kelly and Georgia Elwiss got the visitors off to a lively start after being put in to bat by the leaders and they never looked back despite their innings falling away.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge threatened to lead an unlikely Surrey victory charge after the loss of three wickets in the opening 10 balls but her dismissal for 60 ended any hopes of a fifth successive win.

In the day’s other game Mady Villiers made an unbeaten 85 for struggling Durham but was powerless to prevent the impressive Bears from cantering to a seven-wicket win in the North East.

Match scorecards

With four wins under their belt, Surrey were expected to be tested by the second-placed Blaze in the capital and so it proved as the visitors raced out of the blocks with Kelly smashing 46 from 29 balls in a 92-run opening stand with Elwiss.

Kelly’s five fours and two sixes should have precipitated a run-fest for The Blaze but after Elwiss’ well-constructed 61 only Josie Groves (19 not out) reached double figures as they finished on 169-9.

Surrey may have fancied their chances of chasing down that target but were rocked back on their heels as Bryony Smith, Kira Chathli and Paige Scholfield were all dismissed without scoring.

Durham suffered a fourth defeat in five outings despite a T20 career-best 85 not out from England all-rounder Mady Villiers.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat the home side were soon in trouble when they lost former New Zealand skipper Suzie Bates to the third ball of the innings – clean bowled by England’s Issy Wong without scoring.

Leah Dobson (8) quickly became Wong’s second scalp but Villiers, who was dropped early in her innings, crashed 11 fours and one six while finding useful support from skipper Hollie Armitage (15) and Bess Heath (27) to keep the scoreboard ticking over and set a challenging total.

Wong’s return of 2-19 was well backed up by Hannah Baker’s 2-22 from her four overs with the Bears bowling attack standing up well to Villiers’ onslaught.

The visitors made light work of their victory target with openers Meg Austin and Davina Perrin sharing a stand of 62 from the opening six overs to set a platform for them to ease home with 10 balls to spare.

Perrin eventually perished for 49 from 31 deliveries only for wicketkeeper Nat Wraith to take the Bears to the brink of victory, with her 56 containing seven fours before she became Villiers’ sole victim with the ball.

“I don’t think we should go away from how well Mady [Villiers] played first half – it was a great innings and if you’re doing things like that, you shouldn’t be losing games of cricket,” said Durham head coach Dani Hazell.

Why Trump’s attempts to make peace in Ukraine will fail

Trump often promised to bring peace to Ukraine in one day, but he may be coming to terms with reality.

Despite the White House pressure to end the Ukraine war, which has resulted in face-to-face talks, it has only worsened.

Andrey Kortunov, the former director of the Russian International Affairs Council, tells host Steve Clemons that war is a high priority for Moscow, and a low priority for Washington, so Russia is not in a rush to resolve the conflict according to United States President Donald Trump’s timeline.

Love Island fans issue brutal warning to Ben after spotting major ‘red flags’

Love Island fans reacted to tension on tonight’s episode as they claimed Ben displayed signs of huge ‘red flags’ during a very awkward interaction

Viewers issued a warning over one Love Island star tonight after an awkward scene aired on the show. It came after the first dumping of the new series earlier this week.

Tonight’s episode saw the islanders in the aftermath of Sophie Lee having left the villa on the ITV2 show earlier this week. She was dumped in last night’s instalment after Harry Cooksley and co-star Shakira Khan decided to recouple.

Shakira had been tasked with getting a boy to couple up with her after being left single in a twist that aired in the launch episode on Monday. She was told by host Maya Jama that either she would be the first star dumped or the partner of anyone she recoupled with would be instead.

Following the dumping, at the start of tonight’s episode, there was tension between Toni Laites and Ben Holbrough. The pair have been coupled up since Toni ‘stole’ him from Shakira, which was the act that had left her single.

Toni and Ben were speaking as part of a group when she joked that the boys could be at risk next after all of the girls, except Toni, had been at risk of being dumped first in the twist that revolved around Shakira. Ben thought she was talking about him specifically and Toni teased that it isn’t all about him. Moments later he was seen walking off from the group.

Toni said: “Boys, it’s your turn.” Asked what she meant, she clarified: “I think you’re not gonna be safe.” Ben appeared to say: “Why are you saying that about me in particular?” Toni reacted: “I said boys!” Alima confirmed: “She didn’t mean it about you. She meant all the boys.” Toni added: “Everything’s about him.”

Ben reacted: “But no one said that.” Toni said: “You just said …” There was then mostly silence among the group as some of them appeared awkward in the aftermath. Ben ended up walking off and later said about the situation: “Is it the time and place to be joking about things like that? I’ve just got the ick.”

Fans weren’t impressed with Ben whilst watching the episode though. “BEN IS SUCH BAD VIBES,” one person wrote on X. Another said: “The red flags are really flagging with this Ben.” Someone else said: “Ben is soooooo sensitive omg.” One fan teased: “Ben is giving everyone the ick, not just Toni.”

One person wrote on Instagram: “He cannot take a joke to save his life.” Someone else said: “Bro needs humbling.” Another agreed, commenting: “Ben actually needs some humbling.”

Ben and Toni later spoke about their relationship, with the pair seemingly deciding to call time on a romance. During their conversation, after hearing that he had said she gave him “the ick” behind her back, Toni told him: “Say it to me.” Ben then said it and she replied: “You’re giving me the ick.”

Lottie Moss felt like she was dying after Ozempic overdose but would take jabs again

TV star and model Lottie Moss has opened up on her scary experience of having a seizure following an overdose of Ozempic as she admitted she’s thought about taking it again

Model Lottie Moss has discussed her “terrifying” experiences with medication Ozempic on a new ITV show. The young model has revealed she was hospitalised after taking the medication, which is used to treat diabetes.

Lottie, Kate Moss’ younger half-sister, said: “I’d lost like, six or seven kg, like, it was so dramatic. “Coming off really quickly, and you almost don’t even notice it, because you’re so sick and, like, tired all the time. That’s why they, like, rushed me to the hospital. In the ER, I started to feel something really weird happen as soon as I got on the bed, I had the seizure, and they were holding me down. I was terrified.

“I do remember it, I started to feel, I honestly felt like I was dying. And it sounds really dramatic, but I’ve never had a seizure before. And I was just like this so isn’t worth it? Like, what am I doing to my body? Like, why did I feel like I needed to do this.

“But I remember when I was just after I’d come out the hospital, I felt good because I was so slim, and I get how that feeling can be so addictive now.”

Despite all the pain and horror, Lottie says she has “thought about” going back to the injections before remembering it “didn’t work out for a reason”. Other celebrities have used the jabs or similar ones including Sharon Osbourne and Gemma Collins. While some have used the medication for weight loss purposes, the drug isn’t licensed for this. Instead, it is used to treat diabetes and side effects of the drug is weight loss.

On ITV show The Price Of Perfection, Olivia Attwood speaks to Lottie and also continues her search for how science and social media are redefining beauty as we all chase the perfect selfie.

Lottie decided to open up on her scary hospital experience last year as she wanted to warn people of the dangers. She said on her Dream On with Lottie Moss podcast that her face and hands clenching up was one of the ‘scariest’ things she has ever gone through.

Medical professionals told her that the dosage she was injecting into her leg would have been prescribed to someone who weighed at least 100 kilos despite the star being in ‘her 50s’ range. She said: “A few months ago, I was not feeling happy about my weight, I had a friend, and she could get it for me.

“It was below board, from a doctor, but it wasn’t like you go into a doctor’s office and he prescribes it for you, takes your blood pressure, and takes tests, which is what you need when you go on something like Ozempic. At the end of the day, it is a medication, it is dangerous and really meant for weight loss of people of a very large size.

“When I was taking it, the amount that I was taking was meant for people who are 100 kilos and over and I’m in the 50s range. It’s these small things I wish I’d known before taking it. But I took it, you inject it into your leg, and it was the worst decision I ever made.

She added: “I would rather die any day than take it again. It made me feel so nauseous. I took it for two weeks. It comes with a pen and different doses, you take one injection one week, one injection the next week and you take it every week, and I’ve never felt sicker in my life. I was throwing up, it was horrible. I took a lower dosage the first time I took it then I went up higher. I ended up being in bed for two days, felt so sick, my weight had dropped.”
