Ambitious Askou ‘hungry for success’ as new Motherwell manager

Motherwell FC

Former IFK Goteborg head coach Jens Berthel Askou says he is “hungry for success” after being named the new Motherwell manager.

The 42-year-old Dane was most recently assistant manager at FC Copenhagen and has had spells in charge of clubs in his homeland, Sweden and the Faroe Islands.

“Having spoken extensively with members of the club board, it was clear from the outset that our ideas, ambitions and morals align,” said Askou.

“We are all ambitious people, and we’re all hungry for success. I can’t wait to arrive in Scotland and begin planning for the season ahead. There is a lot of work to be done, but it’s highly exciting.”

With the move subject to the approval of a work permit, Motherwell say they hope Askou can start next week.

He replaces Michael Wimmer, who left Fir Park in late May to join German third-tier side Jahn Regensburg.

Who is Askou & why have Motherwell chosen him?

Askou has won promotion to the Danish top flight with both Vendsyssel and Horsens. In between those jobs he won a league and cup double in the Faroe Islands with HB Torshavn.

In June 2023, he took over at IFK Goteborg for a year before joining Sparta Prague as an assistant coach.

In January, he took up a similar post at FC Copenhagen working under manager Jacob Neestrup.

“We had a high number of impressive applicants, but we were really drawn to Jens,” said Motherwell chairman Kyrk Macmillan.

“His track record of working with big clubs, delivering success and developing young players matches up with all our philosophies.

“He has handed 26 teenagers debuts in five-and-a-half seasons, which I think is evidence of Jens implementing his ideas and morals.

“The data and numbers impressed us, but more importantly, after speaking with Jens a number of times, he is a really ambitious character and a leader who was extremely keen to get the role here at our club.”

Askou appointment predictably unpredictable – analysis

It’s becoming the Motherwell way to take an alternative approach to things.

Much like the recruitment process for Wimmer, the Fir Park club have gone down an unfamiliar route to bring in their new manager.

Arguably Askou has more of a pedigree than his predecessor. He’s won trophies and promotions, including a domestic double in the Faroe Islands. There’s also names such as IFK Goteborg and FC Copenhagen on his CV.

He talks of being hungry for success, but success in Scotland may look quite different. On the sort of a budget a fan-owned club can offer, a league and cup double parade going along Windmillhill Street seems fanciful.

However, being bold in chasing ambition is something in line with the Motherwell way of thinking right now. A young board led by chairman Kyrk MacMillan, who previously was a CEO with a Danish fashion firm, are keen to forge their own path.

But Askou has a lot to do, and quickly, when he arrives next week.

The bulky squad left for him report for pre-season training on Wednesday, along with new recruits presumably eyed up by Wimmer.

He also has to face losing star asset, Lennon Miller, whose value and profile will only have gone up since impressing for Scotland on Monday.

Air India flight crashes in Ahmedabad with more than 240 people on board

An Air India passenger plane bound for London with more than 240 people on board has crashed in India’s northwestern city of Ahmedabad, the airline says.

Firefighters doused the smoking wreckage of the plane, which would have been fully loaded with fuel shortly after takeoff on Thursday, and an adjacent multistorey building.

The airline said the Gatwick Airport-bound flight was carrying 242 passengers and crew. Of those, Air India said, there were 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese and one Canadian.

Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the director general of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, told The Associated Press news agency that Air India Flight 171 crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar five minutes after taking off at 1:38pm (08:08 GMT). He said 244 people were on board the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and it was not immediately possible to reconcile the discrepancy with Air India’s numbers.

All efforts were being made to ensure medical aid and relief support at the site, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu posted on X.

The 787 Dreamliner is a wide-body, twin-engine plane. This is the first crash ever of the aircraft, according to the Aviation Safety Network database.

Boeing said it was aware of the reports of the crash and was “working to gather more information”.

The last major passenger plane crash in India was in 2020 when an Air India Express Boeing 737 skidded off a hilltop runway in southern India, killing 21 people.

Prosecutors have revealed Waiter Braian Nahuel Paiz and ex-hotel worker Ezequiel David Pereyra will stand trial for their alleged part in the singer’s death last October.

Prosecutors also revealed Liam had taken cocaine in his CasaSur Palermo Hotel and and consumed it “up to a few minutes before his death”.

Liam Payne fell to his death at a Buenos Aires hotel

In a lengthy statement, Argentina’s public prosecution service said: “At the request of the head of the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14, Andres Esteban Madrea, the two defendants remanded in custody as part of the court investigation into the circumstances surrounding Liam James Payne’s death, will go on trial accused of the crime of selling drugs.

“They are Braian Nahuel Paiz, 25, who met Payne while working as a waiter in a restaurant in Puerto Madero, and Ezequiel David Pereyra, 24, who was an employee at the Hotel CasaSur Palermo where the former One Direction member died eight months ago after falling from the balcony of room 310, in a proven state of intoxication with cocaine, alcohol and psychotropic drugs.”

The alleged drug dealers are the only two suspects who will end up on the stand, with three other men initially charged over Liam’s death being told in February the case against them had been dropped.

No date has yet been set for the Paiz and Pereyra trial although it is expected to kick off shortly.

Liam’s death stunned the world on October 16, 2024. Liam fell from the third floor of a hotel building in the Argentinian capital.

Police, firefighters and ambulances were seen outside of a hotel building after Liam tragically fell. In a statement in the moments after his death, the local ambulance manager told TN: “At 17.04 through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of the management of a south house hotel.

“At 17.11 a SAME team arrived and verified the death of this man and later we found out that he was a singer in a musical group. Unfortunately, he had injuries that were incompatible with life, as a result of his fall, so we had to confirm his death, there was no possibility of resuscitation.”

India: Investigating sexual abuse allegations in Kerala’s film industry

From actors to makeup artists, 101 East meets the women alleging sexual abuse in India’s Kerala film industry.

In 2017, a male superstar in India’s Kerala film industry was accused of orchestrating the abduction and assault of an actress.

He denies the charges, but the assault prompted an investigation into widespread misconduct in the field.

In 2024, Kerala’s highest court released a landmark report exposing systemic sexual harassment and exploitation of women in the state’s cinema.

The findings prompted public outrage and led to more women filing lawsuits against influential figures.
