UK announces national inquiry into ‘grooming gangs’ after pressure

The British government has announced it will hold a national inquiry into organised child sexual abuse after months of resisting the call from opposition groups.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Saturday that he had read “every single word” of an independent report into the sexual assault scandal, also known as the “grooming gangs” case, by Baroness Louise Casey and would accept her recommendation for the investigation.

“That is the right thing to do on the basis of what she [Casey] has put in her audit. I asked her to do that job to double check on this; she has done that job for me and having read her report … I shall now implement her recommendations.” Starmer told reporters travelling with him during a visit to Canada.

Earlier this year, the government dismissed calls for a public inquiry, stating that it was focusing on recommendations already made in a seven-year national inquiry by Professor Alexis Jay.

In 2022, Jay found that there had been institutional failings across the country, affecting tens of thousands of victims in England and Wales.

But the opposition Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, said Starmer only backs the report because “a report told him to”.

But increased interest into the “grooming gangs” case, as the British press termed it, was pushed by far-right groups, including Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, and further stoked by tech billionaire and Tesla owner Elon Musk, after the perpetrators of one of the most high-profile cases in the country were men of Pakistani heritage.

Their push was branded by critics as a racist dog whistle. The vast majority of “grooming gang” offences, however, are carried out by white men, the UK’s National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) said earlier this year.

Musk used his X platform to criticise the British prime minister over not backing a national inquiry after the local authority in Oldham, a town in northern England, found that girls under the age of 18 were sexually exploited by groups of men in the 2000s and 2010s.

Musk also alleged that Starmer did not bring the perpetrators to justice when he was the country’s chief prosecutor between 2008 and 2013, a charge that Starmer had denied repeatedly.

Sam Thompson loving new role as he coaches ex Zara’s new boyfriend Louis Tomlinson

Sam Thompson is relishing his new role as Soccer Aid coach and bossing the team around after he was forced to pull out of playing in the charity match. The I’m A Celebrity favourite helped raise over £1million by completing a gruelling 261-mile five-day challenge for Unicef but injured his calf in the process.

It means he’ll be on the sidelines for tomorrow’s game. “I’ll putting my two pence in,” vowed Sam. “I might be shouting ‘I think we might need to change it to a 4-2-3-1.’ But we’ll have to wait and see. If Tom Grennan’s looking a little bit leggy, I might have to hook him off. Obviously that will have to go via Tyson Fury. I’m quite small, he’s quite tall, so getting into his ear is gonna be a bit tough, but I’m gonna give it a go. I might get power drunk and then just be like, ‘Tyson, take a back seat.’ And he’s gonna be like, ‘Sam, sit down.’”

Sam was told he could no longer play in the match after being assessed by a medic. He was lined up to play for England – alongside Louis Tomlinson. All eyes have been on the pair and their awkward interactions after Louis started dating Sam’s ex Zara McDermott. Sam has insisted there are “no hard feelings” between the guys.

Sam, 32, and former Love Islander Zara, 28, called time on their five-year relationship shortly before Christmas. Zara is said to have moved on with One Direction singer Louis, 33, in March.

Ahead of the charity match, Sam took part in a gruelling challenge, running and cycling 260 miles, delivering the match ball from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford. His journey was documented for ITV One’s Sam Thompson’s Match Ball Mission for Soccer Aid.

Sam said his challenge has changed his outlook on life, likening it to therapy and say it’s made him more grateful for everything he’s got. “It’s the most important thing I’ve done in my 32 years of life,” he said. “Getting to go to Guatemala, getting to see what UNICEF do on the ground, it’s just life changing. The past four months have been a whirlwind. There’s so much that’s happened in that space of time. While their lives have remained the exact same.

“I left a lot out on that road. I remember at the end of Thursday, I went silent for an hour and a half on the bike. And that’s weird for me. I was really struggling. I just cried on the bike as I was cycling. You really realise why we were all there and what we were doing. It’s the quietest I’ve ever been.”

Soccer Aid for UNICEF 2025 will take place tomorrow at Old Trafford, Manchester and will be shown live exclusively on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player. Donate to UNICEF ahead of the match at socceraid.org.uk/donate. This year, thanks to the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, every donation you make to Soccer Aid for UNICEF will be doubled – up to £5 million.

‘Sky the limit’ for treble winners Bath – Spencer

Captain Ben Spencer says the “sky is the limit” for Bath after they ended a 29-year wait for a Premiership trophy and clinched a historic treble.

Spencer lifted the trophy at Allianz Stadium Twickenham on Saturday after a tense, closely-fought 23-21 final victory against Leicester Tigers.

Bath added their first league title since 1996 to Premiership Rugby Cup and European Challenge Cup silverware won earlier this campaign.

“The future of this club is unbelievably bright, no matter who pulls on the shirt it’s next man in,” Spencer said.

Spencer joined Bath in 2020 after nine years with Saracens where he won seven major trophies – including four Premiership titles – through the London club’s era of dominance.

The 32-year-old was made captain in 2022-23 as head of rugby Johann van Graan’s tenure at Bath began, just months after the club had finished bottom of the league the season before.

“The amount of hard work this has taken to turn the ship around… we were bottom three years ago,” added Spencer.

“I can’t credit [Van Graan] enough, he’s been absolutely brilliant. If we [understand] there’s always an opportunity to get better then I’m really excited for the next couple of years.”

Bath narrowly lost to Northampton in the Twickenham showpiece last June but were overwhelming favourites this time around.

They ended the regular league campaign 11 points clear at the top of the table and wrapped up top spot and a home semi-final in the play-offs with three rounds of games still to play.

Scrum-half Spencer said he mainly felt “relief” at the final whistle because of the prolonged build-up.

“To get the mindset right when you qualify early as we did is quite tough,” he said.

“I played that semi-final in my head hundreds of times. Day in, day out it was, ‘who are we going to get?’ It’s a hard place to be mentally.

‘Champion teams win things multiple times’

Van Graan said his side had done the “unthinkable” in winning the league title three years after he took over.

The squad will now go their separate ways over the summer, with international commitments, including the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia.

They will not reconvene until a pre-season camp in September but Van Graan said the ambition to keep getting better will not diminish.

“I’ll set the vision we’ll align as a group and we’ll take whatever’s next – champion teams are teams that win things multiple times,” he added.

“The day you stand still is the day somebody catches you.

“I learned in my time at [South African club] Bulls when I was part of a team that won a lot, you must always train like number two because the other guys are coming.

“We’ll look at ourselves and we’ll go again. It’s a journey, there’s no end point.”

Curtis Pritchard has revealed all about his romantic status after his shock split from fellow Love Island star Ekin-Su Culculoglu. Reality TV fans watched Curtis, 29, and Ekin-Su, 30, fall for each other earlier this year as they starred on Love Island: All Stars together.

After falling for each other in the villa, the couple made it all the way to the final but ended in third place behind runners up Grace Jackson and Luca Bish and winners Casey O’Gorman and Gabby Allen. After leaving the villa in the middle of February and returning to the UK, Curtis and Ekin-Su seemed to be heading for a happy romance.

But the love did not last – and the couple revealed they had decided to call it a day just three months after they were crowned third in the second season of Love Island: All Stars. Now Curtis has shone light on his romantic status – and his hopes for the future.

The reality star, who is a professional on the Irish version of Dancing with the Stars and has been retraining as a boxer since February this year, has revealed he is focusing on his sport for now.

He told the Daily Mail: “I mean, as of now, I am single.” And when asked if he would be interested in a serious romance, he replied: “You know what I’ve just come out of, just come off doing Love Island, so I haven’t even thought about it.

“Boxing is my my thought process at the moment. I am not going to lie, I want kids and I do want to get married. So yeah, I am looking for that if anyone’s out there.”

Ekin-Su announced she had split from Curtis via a blunt social media post that she released at the end of May. She wrote: “I wanted to share that Curtis and I have decided to go our separate ways.

“It’s been a really tough decision, but one made with a lot of love and respect for one another. He’s an incredible person and I’ll always cherish the memories we made both in an out of the villa.”

She continued: “Thank you all so much for the love and support over the past few months. We’re both focusing on navigating this transition and would really appreciate privacy during this time. Love always, EkinSu.”

Curtis later confirmed the news with a short statement of his own. He wrote at the time: “Just a quick note to say thank you so much for all the kind messages, it really does mean the world. It’s true, Ekin and I have decided to go our separate ways. Breakups are never easy, but i’ll always be grateful for the laughs, the adventures, and the memories (especially the dance routines).”

And he concluded: “I’ll be keeping busy with work, boxing, dancing, and working with the team on FINT. Lots of love, Curtis.”

During his first stint on Love Island back in season five in 2019, Curtis fell into a romance with Irish beauty Maura Higgins – however the relationship collapsed a few months after they left the villa.

While Ekin-Su found love with Davide Sanclimenti during season eight of the show in 2022 and the pair even won the show. But the split months later amid rumours of unfaithfulness.

Smith double helps Leeds beat Wolves

Betfred Super League

Leeds (8) 36

Tries: Smith (2), Croft, Holroyd, Connor, Gannon Goals: Connor (5), Watkins

Warrington (0) 12

A rare two-try performance from forward Cameron Smith set Leeds Rhinos on their way to a fifth consecutive Super League win, piling on the misery for Challenge Cup beaten finalists Warrington Wolves.

Smith came off the interchange bench to break down some strong Warrington defence in the first half, and with the in-form Jake Connor adding the conversion and a penalty, the home side had breathing space at half-time.

The Wolves’ spirited performance fell apart in the second half as Smith added another, and tries from Brodie Croft, Tom Holroyd, Connor and Morgan Gannon ensured Leeds stayed in touch with top two Hull Kingston Rovers and Wigan Warriors.

A superb try from Jake Thewlis had given Warrington brief hope, Ben Currie added a late consolation score, and Marc Sneyd’s two conversions saw him overhaul Andy Farrell to go fourth in the all-time Super League kickers’ list with 1,027 goals.

Warrington’s morale-sapping late defeat by Hull KR at Wembley last week was compounded by the loss of full-back Matt Dufty with a fractured eye socket, but their performance in that narrow loss, and the return of George Williams for his first Super League appearance since 12 April, raised hopes for the rest of their campaign.

That optimism was underlined in a tight first half against a Leeds side whose defensive record is second only to that of Hull KR this season.

Both teams had chances thwarted by excellent defence in the opening half-hour and ironically it was a Williams fumble that set Leeds up for the opening score, Smith benefiting from Lachie Miller’s sharp break to go under the posts, with Connor extending the lead.

All of the Wolves’ fine defensive work in that opening half proved to be for nothing as Leeds stepped up a gear after the break and the visitors, who lost Arron Lindop to a knee injury, began to flag.

Within six minutes of the restart, Smith had barged over for his second try – only the second time in his nine-year career that he has scored more than once in a game – and Croft stepped outside his would-be tackler to put the game beyond Wire.

That sparked Sam Burgess’s side into attacking life and they responded with a picturebook try, Thewlis racing clear after a slick passing move, but it was a momentary pleasure for the travelling fans.

Leeds roared back onto the attack and, after Smith was inches short of a hat-trick just before, Connor sent Holroyd through a gap before darting through for a try of his own to add to five successful conversions.

Leeds: Miller, Hall, Newman, Handley, Lumb, Connor, Croft, Palasia, O’Connor, Oledski, McDonnell, Gannon, Watkins

Interchanges: Holroyd, Lisone, Bentley, Smith

Warrington: Thewlis, Lindop, Tai, King, Wrench, Williams, Sneyd, Yates, Powell, Vaughan, Fitzgibbon, Holroyd, Currie

Interchanges: Harrison, Crowther, Philbin, Wood
