Jamie Oliver’s new show is ‘viscerally painful’ as childhood trauma ‘hits a nerve’

In a new Channel 4 documentary, Jamie’s Dyslexia Revolution, the TV chef revealed that he was made to feel “stupid, worthless, and thick” as a schoolboy. He revealed how he struggled with dyslexia.

Jamie Oliver has produced countless hit TV shows, ranging from challenging travel documentaries to simple cook-alongs, throughout his distinguished career.

However, his most recent television offering strikes a profoundly personal note, unlike anything the Naked Chef has released before, delving into the topic of dyslexia. Nowadays, Jamie is known to be one of the brightest stars of the culinary world, with his numerous cookbooks on display in kitchens up and down the country.

The father-of-five, who is 50, has also made a positive use of his celebrity status by stressing the importance of giving children nutritious meals to ensure the best possible start in life. The 12-year-old Jamie, who was cruelly criticized as a “stupid dunce” by his peers, may have thought such a legacy may have seemed like an unattainable dream.

The Essex-born chef, who is a one-hour channel 4 documentary, Jamie’s Dyslexia Revolution, discusses the difficulties he himself encountered as a youngster growing up with dyslexia and advocates for improved dyslexia support in schools, with an emphasis on early screenings and better neurodiversity awareness.

Jamie described making the documentary as the “most viscerally painful” thing he’s ever done in an interview with The Sunday Times. Jamie claimed that he was “unpacking quite a lot of stuff,” adding, “I thought I’d buried it, but it’s hitting a nerve.” This documentary is the most viscerally painful of all the things I’ve ever done, in my opinion.

He continued, “I’ve seen so many high-flying, gifted, grown men cry because I just did it to you. The idea of being worthless (when you’re) young is real. It really triggers.”

According to the NHS, dyslexia is a “common learning difficulty that causes problems with reading, writing, and spelling,” and it is estimated to affect one in ten people in the UK. This lifelong learning challenge, which was previously known as word blindness, can present a variety of daily challenges, starting with reading to spelling. However, it has been discovered that those with it frequently excel in other areas, such as problem-solving and creative thinking.

Unfortunately, Jamie, who had two GCSEs before leaving school, developed insecurities that “lungered him to tears and a hatred for education,” making him feel “stupid, worthless, and thick.” He recalled that there were no strategies, just a little extra tutoring assistance for me during exams. Then, there was no robust dyslexic knowledge.

Thanks to his exceptional cooking skills, Jamie was thankfully able to carve out a rewarding path that “saved” him. He continued, “I never told my parents, teachers, or my mom.” I simply kept it a secret inside. I was saved by the kitchen. I was aware of what I could offer. I was aware that I wasn’t a pointless piece of crap.

Jamie’s Dyslexia Revolution will be available on Channel 4 starting at 9 p.m. on June 9.

“Obligation”: Reactions as Nawrocki wins Poland’s presidential election

After a competitive election, nationalist populist Karol Nawrocki will become Poland’s next leader. His victory gives the populist movement a significant boost in both Europe and the world.

The opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, which had backed Nawrocki, won 50.89 percent of the vote, according to the Electoral Commission’s results on Monday. In Sunday’s run-off, Rafal Trzaskowski, a liberal mayor of Warsaw, won 49.1% of the vote.

The close encounter is seen as a stark illustration of the deep division between liberals and conservative forces, who are primarily concentrated in major cities, and who are frequently associated with the powerful Catholic Church.

Nawrocki is expected to use his veto power to stymie the agenda of Prime Minister Donald Tusk by following in the footsteps of his predecessor Andrzej Duda from PiS, despite the country’s majority in terms of power.

The judicial system, which PiS revamped during its eight years in power, ended in 2023, has been pledged by Tusk’s centrist coalition government to reform. The European Union, which claimed the changes criticized the judiciary as politicizing and anti-democratic, is at odds with PIS’s proposals.

Due to Duda’s opposition, the government has also struggled to ease restrictions on abortion and establish LGBTQ rights.

Nawrocki has vowed to guard Poland’s sovereignty from what he perceives as excessive Brussels interference, as well as criticizing Ukraine’s plans to acquiesce in NATO and EU membership.

Nawrocki has also promised to prioritize the needs of Poles over the numerous refugees the nation has taken in, despite continuing to support Kyiv in its conflict with Russia.

Therefore, his victory might have an impact on Warsaw’s relations with the EU and its support for Ukrainian refugees.

Right-wing organizations in Europe, who were disappointed by George Simion’s defeat in last month’s presidential election, have been quick to applaud.

How did the world react to his victory, in this case:

Poland

Trzaskowski congratulated Nawrocki on his victory, warned him to represent every Pole, and conceded defeat. “This victory is a requirement, especially in these challenging circumstances.” particularly when the outcome is similar. Trzaskowski said on X, “don’t forget that.”

In the first round of the May 18 election, the far-right Confederation party’s leader Slawomir Mentzen said, “I’m really counting on you not forget those millions of voters who did not vote for you in the first round but did yesterday.” They desired change.

On X, PiS lawmaker Jacek Sasin wrote, “The referendum has been won.

European Union

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, expressed her congratulations and confidence in the continuation of “very good cooperation” with Warsaw.

In our shared values of peace, democracy, and strength, we are all stronger as a family. So let’s work together to ensure our common home’s security and prosperity,” she said on X.

Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, expressed his interest in “fruitful cooperation” with Poland.

“We strengthen one another on our continent, giving Europe more strength in the face of global competition,” Zelenskyy said.

Germany

According to President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Nawrocki and Poland should “cooperate closely based on democracy and the rule of law” and rely on one another’s cooperation to “ensure a future of security, freedom, and prosperity for Europe.”

NATO

Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that he was looking forward to working with Nawrocki to “making sure that NATO becomes even stronger than it is today.”

France

The election resulted in a “rebuff to the Brussels oligarchy, which intends to impose a standardization of legislation on member states, contrary to any democratic will,” according to far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who also praised the European Commission’s “authoritarian policies and federalist ambitions” as “a brutally repressive national sovereignty.”

Hungary

Viktor Orban, the prime minister of Hungary, thanked Nawrocki for his “fantastic victory,” calling himself a model for the nation’s populist movements in Europe. In reference to the four-nation Visegrad Group, which includes the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Orban added that he is “looking forward to working with Nawrocki] on strengthening Visegrad cooperation.

Nawrocki’s success was referred to as a “fresh victory for]European] patriots,” according to Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

Prince Harry and Meghan wedding bombshells from ‘s*** show to tears over Kate’s comment’

On the outside, it appeared to be a fairytale day when Prince Harry and Meghan tied the knot in 2018, but behind the scenes, it was reportedly “all drama” as the couple prepared for the big day.

On the surface, everything seemed picture-perfect when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in a lavish royal wedding in 2018. Millions of people tuned in to watch the nuptials across the globe, with the public’s attention totally captivated by the fairytale story unfolding before their eyes: one of the monarchy’s most popular members was finally settling down.

Whilst Meghan had a public profile before marrying into the Royal Family – thanks to her successful career as an actress – she was quickly catapulted to new heights of notoriety, and behind closed doors, the pressure of the spotlight started getting to the couple.

The pair eventually stepped back from royal life less than two years later, finding things as full-time working royals unworkable, and moved across the pond to start a new life in California – Meghan’s home state. Harry and Meghan recently celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary, with Meghan sharing a sweet photo collage board on her Instagram that was filled with sentimental nods to the big day.

Last year, a source who has worked with the couple since they moved to the US said the pair are clearly still “hot for each other” – but whilst their marriage may be as strong as ever, the tensions that first reared their heads in the preparations for the wedding with the other senior royals have only increased with time.

The Mirror looks back at some of the biggest bombshells surrounding Meghan and Harry’s wedding.

A ‘ s*** show ‘

Insiders revealed that things were pretty stressful and strained in the lead-up to Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018, with author Tina Brown claiming that it was a “s*** show” in her book Palace Papers, quoting an insider as saying things were “all drama, all the time”.

The author claimed that palace aides and staff members rapidly became “fed up” with the demands being put on them by the couple as they prepared for the big day.

Guards issue a prompt warning.

The photographer who took the official portraits of the newlywed couple and their loved ones on the big day recently opened up about a severe warning given to all guests upon their arrival at the chapel. Alexi Lubomirski revealed in a TikTok video that guards urgently warned guests as they came in: “Ladies and gentlemen, please be careful what you are saying to each other because the world can lip read.”

He explained that this was the reason why many guests were seen posing with their mouths as they sat there, “You don’t know what you’re talking about, but everyone on these cameras is watching and lip-reading.”

Meghan was ‘scolded’ by the queen’s actions.

Royal author Katie Nicholl has claimed that after Meghan spoke sharply to a member of the catering staff during the wedding prep, the late Queen wasn’t best pleased. The now-Duchess was participating in a menu tasting to ensure that all the dishes would be suitable for the big day, but when she tried one, she was reportedly persuaded to eat the egg, which meant it wasn’t made vegan as instructed.

“She got quite upset, saying that the dish was meant to be vegan and macrobiotic,” a source told the author, reported in her book The New Royals, however the Queen intervened almost immediately after hearing what she said, the source claimed. “Suddenly the Queen walked in and said: ‘Meghan, in this family we don’t speak to people like that.'”

Unexpected response to Charles’ offer

Meghan’s relationship with her father Thomas Markle Senior quickly started to unravel as the wedding preparations progressed. Thomas was caught staging a photo shoot with paparazzi ahead of the big day, and whilst he later expressed regret over his decision to take part in it, things between the once-close father and daughter began to unravel.

The Duchess has claimed that she only found out he was not attending her wedding due to health issues through media reports, and the pair are now totally estranged, with Thomas never having met Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, three.

Thomas would walk his daughter down the aisle on her Windsor wedding day, but Charles, the then Prince of Wales, offered to take his place because he was unable to attend.

However, Meghan’s reaction to the offer is claimed to have caught him off guard. Author Richard Hardman claimed in his book Queen of Our Times, “The reply, according to one friend, was not quite what he was expecting: ‘Can we meet halfway?’ Here was an indicator that this was no blushing bride, but a confident, independent woman determined to make a grand entrance on her own.”

tensions in the tiara

Ahead of the wedding day, there were some tensions behind the scenes over what tiara Meghan would wear during the wedding. Author Tom Bower claimed in his book Revenge that after Meghan met with the Queen and Angela Kelly – the late monarch’s dresser and confidant – to go over tiara options, “Meghan alighted on a tiara sparkling with emeralds. Her choice was approved by Harry. Kelly suggested that its Russian origin made it unsuitable.”

However, the tiara drama didn’t end there. The tiara that was finally landed on had other issues, including Meghan wanting to schedule a rehearsal so her hairdresser could figure out how to fit it and make sure it worked with the veil. When these requests were denied, Harry made the infamous claim that “What Meghan wants, Meghan gets”.

Bower further claimed that Harry then got cross with Angela, which led to something of a telling off from the late Queen, with reports from The Times published back in 2018 echoing these claims. “There was a very heated exchange that prompted the Queen to speak to Harry. She said, ‘Meghan cannot have whatever she wants. She gets what tiara she’s given by me.’ The Queen also questioned why Meghan needed a veil for the wedding, given it was to be her second marriage.”

The tiara and some other things got heated.

However, Harry’s version of events is pretty different than others that have been put forward. In Spare, the way he tells it there was some tension over the issue, but he notes the late Queen was “tender” with Meghan during the tiara selection process, and also personally advised that they made sure to practice with it ahead of the big day – something that Princess Kate also warned the bride was definitely a necessity. “It’s tricky and you don’t want to be doing it for the first time on the wedding day,” he quoted his grandmother as saying.

Meghan’s tiara should be in good hands, according to him, with everyone agreeing on the best outfit for her.

He claims that Angela Kelly was deliberately “obstructive” when it came to helping organise Meghan practising with her hairdresser, and that she repeatedly ignored their messages or wouldn’t facilitate access to the historic piece.

Then, according to Harry, he said, “thanked her, though I added that it would have made our lives so much easier to have had it sooner,” when Angela finally brought the tiara to Kensington Palace.

In Harry’s account of events, Angela didn’t seem to like this: “Her eyes were fire. She started having a go at me… She fixed me with a look that made me shiver. A clear warning appeared in her face, I could see. The discussion is still ongoing.

Flower girl dresses

It was widely reported that Meghan cried to Kate over the dresses the flower girls were supposed to wear at the wedding, but Meghan later claimed that the future Queen had reported this incorrectly and that she had actually caused her to cry.

She also revealed in her interview with Oprah Winfrey that Kate apologized and brought her flowers the following day, and that she thought Kate was a “good person” despite their disagreement.

It had been reported that the two women had fallen out about the length of Princess Charlotte’s dress – with Kate believing it to be too short – and the future Queen wanting to stick with protocol and have the youngsters wear tights, something that Meghan didn’t think was necessary.

Meghan told Oprah about the incident, “A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something involving flower-girl dresses, and it made me cry. Yes, the issue was correct.

“What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only I didn’t do but that happened to me.

And the guests at our wedding told our communications team, “I know this didn’t happen,” and that’s what they did. She continued, “I don’t have to explain what actually happened.”

Man City target Wolves defender Ait-Nouri

Reuters

Pep Guardiola’s men have positioned Rayan Ait-Nouri at the top of his list to solve his side’s problematic left-back spot.

Since Benjamin Mendy left, City have relied on a specialist left-back. In August 2021, he made his final appearance for the club.

Several players have had extended positions, including Oleksandr Zinchenko, Joao Cancelo, and Josko Gvardiol.

At the end of last season, Nico O’Reilly, a youngster, took over the role, including Crystal Palace’ FA Cup final defeat.

Guardiola wants to address the problem this summer, but Ait-Nouri, the Wolves defender, is his choice.

The 23-year-old Algeria international has not reached an agreement yet, but sources have faith in it.

Ait-Nouri was chosen for Algeria’s friendly matches against Sweden and Rwanda on June 5 and 6.

Rangers close in on manager for ‘new chapter’

SNS

Rangers’ manager search is “progressing well” and should be finished in “the coming days,” according to new sporting director Kevin Thelwell.

The club are looking to replace Philippe Clement, who was fired in February, with a consortium of investors led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, who set up majority ownership at Ibrox last week.

Rangers finished last season 17 points clear of Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, but Barry Ferguson assumed head coaching duties temporarily.

Russell Martin and Davide Ancelotti are regarded as the front-runners in the position.

Our goal is clear: we need to win, Thelwell told the club website. “This is a new chapter for Rangers, and we recognize success won’t come easy.”

“It’s my goal, with discipline and ambition, to deliver that.” We’ll do everything in our power to advance this organization as quickly and sustainably as possible.

Thelwell assumed overall control of all football operations, including men’s, women’s, and academy, according to Rangers’ announcement in April.

The 51-year-old previously held similar positions at the New York Red Bulls and the Wolverhampton Wanderers before moving to Glasgow after three years as Everton’s director of football.

Additionally, it was revealed on Sunday that Dan Purdy, Everton’s former head of recruitment, will take the role of technical director in the place of Nils Koppen.

Thelwell has already been a member of the league’s compensation tribunal working group for 2025-26 and has already been appointed.
