US travel ban takes effect amid LA protests against immigration crackdown

President Donald Trump’s order banning citizens from 12 countries from entering the United States has come into effect amid rising political tensions over his administration’s harsh anti-immigration policies.

The measure, announced by Trump last week as necessary to prevent the importation of “terrorists”, took effect on Monday. The clampdown comes amid chaotic scenes on the streets of Los Angeles as crowds of protesters battled with police and National Guard troops following a wave of arrests by immigration authorities.

The divisive order revives similar measures rolled out during Trump’s first term, as travellers from several, mostly Muslim, countries were blocked from entering the US. Many of the countries affected by the new order are afflicted by war and large-scale displacement.

No visible disruption was immediately discernible at Los Angeles International Airport in the hours after the new ban took effect, according to the Associated Press news agency.

The order applies to citizens of Afghanistan, Chad, Eritrea, Equatorial Guinea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, the Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

Heightened restrictions were also placed on people from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.

Trump said the countries subjected to the most severe restrictions were determined to harbour a “large-scale presence of terrorists”, fail to cooperate on visa security and have an inability to verify travellers’ identities. These countries were also inadequate in keeping records of criminal histories and had high rates of visa overstays in the US, according to Trump.

The new ban does not revoke visas previously issued to people from countries on the list, according to guidance issued on Friday to all US diplomatic missions.

But it remains unclear how those rules will be implemented at the ports of entry. During Trump’s first term, a similar travel ban resulted in confusion and disrupted travel.

In announcing the new restriction last week, Trump said the measure was spurred by a recent “terrorist attack” on Jewish people in the US state of Colorado.

The group had been protesting in solidarity with captives held in Gaza when they were assaulted by an Egyptian man that the White House said had overstayed his visa.

That attack, Trump said, “underscored the extreme dangers posed to our country by the entry of foreign nationals who are not properly vetted”.

He warned that new countries could be added “as threats emerge around the world”.

Egypt is not among the states affected by the ban or increased scrutiny.

Volker Turk, United Nations high commissioner for human rights, warned that “the broad and sweeping nature of the new travel ban raises concerns from the perspective of international law”.

‘Unlawful assembly’ zone

The ban comes amid protests in the city of Los Angeles against immigration raids, carried out as part of Trump’s hardline policy.

Over the weekend, Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 members of the National Guard to Los Angeles County to quell the protests, bypassing the authority of the governor of California and sending tensions spiking.

Thousands of protesters flooded the streets in response on Sunday, blocking a major freeway and setting fire to cars.

Law enforcement responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and flashbangs in an effort to disperse the crowds.

Early on Monday, authorities declared downtown Los Angeles an “unlawful assembly” zone and ordered the area cleared.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has formally requested that the Trump administration rescind the order deploying National Guard troops to the city.

The order is believed to be the first time in 60 years that a president has deployed a state’s National Guard without the governor’s consent.

The last instance was in 1965, when President Lyndon B Johnson used troops to protect predominantly Black demonstrators during the civil rights movement in Alabama.

ITV launches brand new channel amid daytime cuts and redundancies

ITV has announced a brand new channel – just weeks after it also announced a string of cuts to its Daytime offerings. Just a few weeks ago, staff at the broadcaster were hit with news that there would be redundancies amid huge changes for ITV.

It has been a tough time for ITV’s Daytime hosts and crew – after it was revealed there would be huge changes both behind the scenes and on the shows. Lorraine Kelly’s self-titled programme will be cut by in half next year, to just half an hour a day and will only air 30 weeks of the year. Loose Women will keep its hour show – but again, it will be cut to just 30 out of 52 weeks a year.

Good Morning Britain will benefit, extending 30 mins to 9.30am each day – and will be produced by a different team than the other shows – Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women. Insiders have warned these changes could result in huge redundancies.

Kevin Lygo, Managing Director of ITV’s Media and Entertainment Division, announced the changes last month, where he had said the changes were necessary to “generate savings”.

He said: “Daytime is a really important part of what we do, and these scheduling and production changes will enable us to continue to deliver a schedule providing viewers with the news, debate and discussion they love from the presenters they know and trust as well generating savings which will allow us to reinvest across the programme budget in other genres. These changes also allow us to consolidate our news operations and expand our national, international and regional news output and to build upon our proud history of trusted journalism at a time when our viewers need accurate, unbiased news coverage more than ever.”

Sources have told The Mirror: “It’s not a case of viewers seeing less of their shows… it’s impossible to see how the high standards will remain the same. Some staff believe Loose Women and Lorraine in particular will enter a death spiral… it’s just so sad. Just a handful of people will be working on each of those two programmes which has huge ramifications for how they are going forward.

“If that’s the case, will Loose Women really still have a live audience…will there be the capacity for that? Everyone doubts it, not least because of the manpower needed to oversee it. Also, there is a huge amount of background work which goes into securing guests… in the new climate how does that continue with barely any staff?”

Now, in what will no doubt be a kick in the teeth for those working on Daytime, ITV has announced the arrival of their brand new channel called ITV Quiz. The channel will broadcast episodes of Lingo, Tipping Point, Wheel of Fortune, Tenable, Deal or No Deal and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire from 9am to 1am every day.

In a surprise move, The Chase – one of ITV’s seemingly most popular quiz shows – is missing from the line-up of the programmes on offer on the new channel as well as its sister show Beat The Chasers and Lee Mack’s The 1% Club.

BBC bosses’ battle to save Strictly as 2025 ‘no more scandal’ line-up leaked

The BBC are demanding a ‘no more scandal’ policy on Strictly and are determined to make sure the 2025 line-up is the safest yet with a royal and Blue Peter stars being considered

Last year’s stars Wynne Evans and Jamie Borthwick created extra headaches for bosses

There is a “terrible, terrible fear” among BBC executives that Strictly Come Dancing will be struck by scandal again this year – and every effort is being made to ensure all contestants are squeaky clean.

The show has been dogged by shocking headlines in recent years, and this weekend EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick – on the show in 2024 – was suspended by the BBC after using a slur against people with disabilities on the set of Strictly while filming in Blackpool.

That came after Giovanni Pernice ws involved allegations of bullying and aggressive behaviour made by his partner Amanda Abbington, forcing the corporation to launched an internal investigation. In May, radio host Wynne Evans announced he is leaving his role after the broadcaster decided not to renew his contract.

He apologised for making what he described as an “inappropriate and unacceptable” comment during the Strictly Come Dancing live tour launch in December. The crude sexualised remark was aimed at dance pro and It Takes Two host Janette Manrara.

Now the BBC want to go risk free and are leaving no stone unturned to make sure the line-up is as safe as possible. Blue Peter presenters Joel Mawhinney and Shini Muthukrishnan are said to be under consideration – as is Tom Parker Bowles, the son of Queen Camilla.

Georgia Toffolo – the I’m a Celebrity Jungle Queen – is reportedly being lined up, as is Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts. Newly married former Love Island star Dani Dyer is being considered, it has been reported, with former Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan another name high up on bosses’ list.

“There is a terrible, terrible fear among those high up that these awful things are going to keep happening and the show will be brought into disrepute again and again,” one well-place BBC insider has told MailOnline. “With that in mind, they are taking no chances.

“There will be stringent checks, and asking around, and digging into potential stars’ backgrounds to make sure that they’re not choosing anyone who might damage the show. For years, there was the whole Strictly “curse” where the contestants and professionals kept having affairs. But that stopped.

“Changes were made to the partnerships and it worked. There have been other issues in the past couple of years, though. What’s been even more embarrassing for the BBC is that Wynne and Jamie have been from their own stable of stars. Going forward, those at the top want a wholesome image to shine through. No more scandal – just joy.”

This weekend EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick declared he is “deeply sorry” for using a derogatory term about disabled people. The shock news came six months after he was competing on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing – which is when the incident is said to have taken place.

The 30-year-old actor has appeared on EastEnders since 2006 in which he plays Jay Brown. However, it is stated he is on suspension from the soap following the revelation he used offensive language in a video that was allegedly shared with friends.

He has issued a grovelling apology which has been shared by The Sun on Sunday, stating: “I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly. “I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning. That is on me completely.

“Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong.” He went on to issue an apology to the people of Blackpool and reiterate his regret over his words. The Mirror has contacted a representative of the star for comment.

Also making its debut for the collection was a buttery yellow crocheted strapless dress, which set Michelle’s tan off a treat. Then, there was a stunning off-white, tasselled off-the-shoulder number, which looked like a dress, but was actually a top and a skirt, as Michelle explained: “This colour is a WOW! And the asymmetrical hemline is really flattering. (It’s a skirt and top so you have to buy separate ladies) Oh, and it’s currently in the SALE!”

Fans couldn’t get enough of Michelle – and her wardrobe- as many flocked to Instagram, praising the actress for how good she looked.

One gushed: “How does anyone look that amazing after just having a baby?”, while another joked: “You look absolutely stunning…I am still trying to get my post-baby figure back, and my baby is 17 this year!”

He continued: “That moment when I held her in my arms, it gets me emotional now thinking about it… I suppose everything else goes out the window, and it’s made me realise what life is all about, and my little baby Palma, I love you so much and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.”

Freddy Brazier U-turns on rehab and says he needs a ‘boys holiday’ instead after dad rift

Jeff Brazier’s youngest son Freddy has changed his mind on checking into rehab after sharing his ambition to ‘get clean’

Freddy Brazier has been opening up to fans online(Image: BBC)

Freddy Brazier has admitted he’s changed his mind on attending rehab and said he needs a ‘boys holiday’ instead. Last week, Jeff Brazier and Jade Goody’s youngest son, 20, shared that he has been addicted to “smoking” from the age of 12 and was seeking treatment to ‘get clean.’

Freddy’s relationship with dad Jeff is said to have hit an all time low to the point Freddy has left the family home and moved in with his maternal grandmother Jackiey Budden. Freddy said he wanted to be on good terms with his dad and his nan and hoped to check into a clinic in Spain to maintain ‘healthy relationships.’

Freddy shared in an Instagram post on Sunday that he has decided he ‘doesn’t need rehab’ and instead ‘needs a boys holiday or a retreat’. Posting a black and white photo of his younger self, he wrote: “You know what I don’t need rehab! I just need a holiday with a good group of boys or a retreat.”

It comes after Freddy spoke candidly about his issues and his strained relationship with dad Jeff, 46. He said: “I’ve decided that I will be cutting down and I want to go to Rehab In Marbs as I feel if I’m in England I won’t take getting clean seriously.

“I’ve been smoking from the age of 12 and it’s time to stop. It was a bad coping mechanism that turned into an addiction, something I relied on and something that made me feel sane and some what OK

“I’ve found a boxing club and a rehabilitation centre. Ive found someone I want to get to know and I’m happy. I got a good bunch of friends and I [want to] get out and enjoy myself.

“I want to be clean so I can live happily and have healthy relationships with people and be there for all of my family rather then feeling like I’m in the middle and have to choose a side.”

He continued: “I haven’t been able to feel loved properly as I have never loved myself and it starts now. I want to play football and take up boxing I want to be happy and be in a healthy relationship and have a healthy relationship with my Nana and my father

“Every day is a new story about me and my Nana and father. It’s getting boring now. Mind your business and have a good rest of the week x,” he finished.

Over the week, concern has grown for Freddy after it emerged he had left his dad’s family home to spend more time with his maternal grandmother Jackiey.

Freddy and Jeff had been known for their sweet bond, which was shown to viewers on BBC series Race Across the World last year. But it seems relations between the two have soured with Freddy getting closer to his late mum Jade’s mother.

The move is said to have devastated dad Jeff, who was reported to be taking legal action to stop the two hanging out.

Defying his dad’s orders, Freddy has been posting pictures with his gran, but worried fans with one post this week as he listed ‘all the things he hates’ about himself.

Freddy wrote that he hates his “relationship with weed”, “step parents” and said “I don’t know how to love because I’ve never felt loved” and said he had “family issues”.

The TikTok was shared on Wednesday, just one day before what would have been Jade Goody’s birthday today. The late Big Brother icon, who died at the age of 27, would have been turning 44.

“Ah man this is gonna be sad to watch,” one TikTok user wrote underneath Freddie’s post. “Go home son, this is not what mum wanted for you sweetheart,” another suggested as a third wrote: “Sending you love Fred! Watched you in Race Across the World & you’re such a decent lad with so much potential.”

It looks like Freddy has a strained relationship with his big brother too, skipping Bobby’s 22nd birthday festivities on Monday. According to The Sun, the party felt an air of “sadness” after Freddy’s absence, where Bobby is said to have spent time with Jeff and stepmum Kate instead.
