Draper’s hopes of reaching Queen’s final ended by Lehecka

Jack Draper’s hopes of winning Queen’s were ended by Jiri Lehecka when the British number one was beaten in a thrilling semi-final.

The 23-year-old had battled back from losing the first set to take the second and then went toe-to-toe with his Czech opponent in the third.

But Lehecka got a crucial break at 5-5, prompting Draper to smash his racquet into the advertising hoardings as he knew just how damaging that was to his dream of reaching the final.

And so it proved as Lehecka served to seal a 6-4 4-6 7-5 win in west London to advance to Sunday’s final, where he will face either top seed Carlos Alcaraz or Roberto Bautista Agut.

Draper had often started slowly at this tournament before getting into his groove and winning but in this instance he found Lehecka had too much for him.

He was broken in the opening game when a double fault gave Lehacka an early boost and the Czech used his big serve well to close out the first set.

Draper’s failure to take advantage of having four break points in the fourth game of the second set looked like being pivotal, but he dug deep to stay in the match before breaking Lehecka for the first time at 5-4 up to take things to a decider, where Lehecka came out on top.

While Draper will be disappointed not to have reached the final – something he had dreamed of as a child – he can be encouraged by his overall performance as Wimbledon approaches at the end of this month.

His run to the last four ensures he not only goes there in good confidence but as one of the top four seeds, ensuring he would avoid defending champion Alcaraz or world number one Jannik Sinner until at least the semi-finals.

Lehecka’s serve was a formidable weapon in the first set but the tide appeared to turn Draper’s way in the second as he started finding ways to beat his opponent with some fantastic shots.

There was a tense moment when Draper and the crowd were unsure whether a winner at set point had landed in before it was confirmed by the automated line call, prompting a roar from the British player and the Andy Murray Arena spectators.

‘He will be one of the Wimbledon favourites’

Draper now has some time off the court before he puts all his focus on going further than he has before at Wimbledon, where he will be seen as the great British hope in the men’s draw when the Grand Slam starts on 30 June.

He has never progressed beyond the second round of the tournament but his form so far this year suggests there is a strong possibility of going far this time.

“He is an amazing competitor,” multi-Grand Slam-winning doubles player and Queen’s tournament director Jamie Murray told BBC Sport.

“He is a big guy but moves incredibly well. He has that left hand that will help him in defensive situations that maybe right-handers don’t have.

“He is having an amazing year and we are hoping he will have a great Wimbledon.

Before Draper devotes all of his time to advancing beyond his previous best efforts at Wimbledon, where he will be regarded as the greatest British hope when the Grand Slam begins on June 30.

Although he has never advanced past the second round of the tournament, his current form suggests that this player has a good chance of succeeding.

Jamie Murray, a multi-Grand Slam winner and Queen’s tournament director, told BBC Sport, “He is an amazing competitor.”

He moves incredibly well despite being big. He has a left hand that, unlike right-handers, will not be able to use in defensive situations.

We are anticipating a fantastic Wimbledon for him because he is having an amazing year.

Lazzat denies Japan historic triumph at Royal Ascot

Media PA

Lazzat, a French runner, defeated Satono Reve to deny Japan’s first victory at Royal Ascot.

The 9-2 winner, trained by Jerome Reynier, won by James Doyle.

Following the earlier success of Humidity in the Chesham Stakes, the jockey and winning owners Wathnan Racing and Flora Of Bermuda were celebrating a double.

After 12 unsuccessful attempts, Satono Reve, who had previously won the meeting, was beaten by half a length.

Lazzat unshipped his jockey and ran around the Ascot track before being caught as Doyle celebrated after the line.

The Hardwicke Stakes victory by Rebel’s Romance was Charlie Appleby’s first royal ascot victory since 2022.

The horse’s halter, William Buick, won the Group One race for the eighth time.

He was the horse we needed, he claimed. In the end, I’m just happy to see one on the board, according to Appleby.

Treanmor, who won the 6-4 stakes at the end of the week, finished fifth behind Humidity, who won the Ascots.

Rebel’s Romance triumphs over “dream horse.”

Royal Ascot has been added to the impressive resume of the globetrotting Rebel’s Romance, which has resulted in significant victories in Dubai, Hong Kong, and the United States.

He is the oldest winner of the race in more than a century and has an annual income of more than £10 million.

“We had a shot, a roll of the dice left, and what a partner,” the statement read. He’s a dream horse, according to Buick, and I’m blessed.

He and I “glut together;” he calls me “my best friend.”

The 6-4 favorite finished ahead of Al Riffa, with Ghostwriter taking third place after Amo Racing’s Kia Joorabchian purchased the team for £2 million this week.

Humidity won the Chesham Stakes in a week that had reached 30C.

Owners Wathnan Racing received a fourth winner of the week from James Doyle’s 4-year effort under the guidance of trainer Andrew Balding.

Real Madrid and Pachuca, two giants in Spain, square off in a match that is a repeat of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final from December.

In a group led by Red Bull Salzburg, both teams need a victory.

A potential loser will be put under more pressure, according to Al Jazeera’s analysis of the match.

In the initial matches, how did Real Madrid and Pachuca fare?

Federico Valverde’s late penalty saw Los Blancos draw 1-1 against Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal, who had the opportunity to give them all three points.

Before halftime, Ruben Neves scored from the spot for the Saudi Pro League side before Real took the lead thanks to Gonzalo Garcia, who was stepping in for Kylian Mbappe, who had been battling with a fever.

Xabi Alonso took over Real for the first time since Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement.

In their opening Group H game, Pachuca were defeated by Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg, who won 2-1.

Just before the break, Oscar Gloukh gave Salzburg the lead. With 14 minutes left, Karim Onisiwo put the finishing touches on the points with a 56-minute equalizer from Bryan Gonzalez.

What has Kylian Mbappe recently been?

Following a severe case of gastroenteritis, Mbappe was taken out of the hospital on Thursday.

When will he be able to compete in the Club World Cup?

The French forward hasn’t been able to train since last Sunday and is still in “rough shape” according to his coach Xabi Alonso.

The symptoms of gastroenteritis include diarrhoea and vomiting, as well as the stomach flu.

What transpired between Real Madrid and Pachuca last time?

Real’s victory in the UEFA Champions League guaranteed them a spot in the December Intercontinental Cup final.

In order to set up the meeting with Madrid in Qatar, Pachuca had to be North American champions in order to advance to the final, defeating Egypt’s Al Ahly.

Real won the first Intercontinental Cup with a 3-0 victory, and Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo, and Vinicius Junior were all on target.

The tournament will be played out exclusively by the continental champions from around the world each year, replacing the previous format of the FIFA Club World Cup.

Real’s place in the UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool in 2022 confirmed their place there.

Their subsequent victory at Borussia Dortmund in the Intercontinental Cup of last year confirmed their encounter with Pachuca.

How did Pachuca become a Club World Cup member?

In the Concacaf Champions Cup, North America’s continental club competition, the Mexican side defeated the Columbus Crew 3-0 to win the match.

Salomon Rondon, a former English Premier League player, scored twice with Miguel Rodriguez also scoring for Pachuca to win a sixth continental title.

Cruz Azul improved to a win over the Vancouver Whitecaps in the CONCACAF Champions Cup final last year, increasing their chances of winning the next FIFA Club World Cup.

Real Madrid has won how many Club World Cups?

Real Madrid won the 2023 World Cup for the fifth time in its various previous competitions, beating Al Hilal.

Despite the fact that the competition resumed with the format of the Club World Cup, the first FIFA Intercontinental Cup was not won after their victory over Pachuca.

Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, Eder Militao, and Eduardo Camavinga may return to action after their own injury layoff, but Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, and Eder Militao are likely to miss out on the game.

news from the Pachuca team

Dave Myers’ widow shares his struggles with illness and heartache before sad death

After being diagnosed with cancer, Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers, who was formerly a makeup artist, passed away in 2024.

Dave died in 2024

The wife of Hairy Bikers’ Dave Myers has revealed the details of his difficult early years before becoming famous. After being diagnosed with cancer, Dave passed away in 2024 at the age of 66.

In her new memoir Dave &amp, Me, Lili discusses how he had a difficult childhood. The pair had a romantic relationship up until his death in 2011.

In the book, Lili mentions her famous husband’s struggle with alopecia and looking after his mother, who had multiple sclerosis. When Dave’s mother Margaret discovered the condition at the age of eight, his father Jim and his mother Margaret had to take care of him both full-time.

Lili wrote in her memoir that she had a wheelchair before becoming physically and mentally ill with the diagnosis of a woman. For a boy who was ten years old, Dave and his father were her full-time caregivers.

The family lived hand-to-mouth, surviving on Jim’s pension money, until social services moved them to a ground-floor apartment on a new council estate in Barrow. Although Dave had to deal with many more difficulties, he found solace in music and painting, two more lifelong passions, and food and bikes.

By the time Dave was 24 years old, both of his parents had passed away, as did Margaret, who had been placed in a care facility four years later. After being diagnosed with alopecia and losing his hair, Dave also had to deal with his own health issues.

(Image: PA)

Lili said: “Not many people know that Dave Myers, the Hairy Biker, was bald from childhood until his forties. At a very young age he began to suffer with alopecia which made things extremely difficult for him, especially in school where he was already singled out for being a ‘poor kid’ thanks to his free meal tokens.

“He was a target for the bullies, and Dave lost his confidence and spirit those days,” he said. Dave speculated that his alopecia might have been brought on by his mother’s suffering.

In his forties, Dave’s hair began to grow bath after a second health issue. When Dave collapsed while filming a scene in 1998, a hospital discovered an arachnoid cyst on his left side of his brain.

It was thought that it had been there since childhood because his brain had grown around it. Dave went for surgery which was a success and he was discharged just five days later on Christmas Eve.

According to Lili, “Davi’s hair began to grow in dark, healthy curls shortly after his op.” This is just a hunch because I’m not medically trained, but perhaps a cyst sitting undiscovered had been pressing on a specific area of the brain, and perhaps that combined with his mother’s caregiving stress had first led to the alopecia? Although I’ll never know for sure, it makes sense.
