Inside Billie Piper’s life – from early popstar fame, wild age gap marriage and huge net worth

Billie Piper, the star of Doctor Who, has had a turbulent and dramatic life off the screen, including teen pop success followed by death threats and two content marriages.

It’s fair to say that Billie Piper’s path to becoming a critically acclaimed actress has been rocky, and her relationship hasn’t been easy either. But she’s also amassed an impressive net worth and has welcomed three children.

The 42-year-old Swindon native first gained notoriety as a mid-teens pop sensation almost 30 years ago. In the 2005 Doctor Who reboot, Rose Tyler replaced her as the actor, and she quickly reinvented herself. Surprising critics and viewers with her screen talent, she continues to do so today.

And now, 20 years later, we are once more shocked by her. Billie, who is believed to be the new doctor, was revealed in this series finale. It’s a stunning return to the series that first made her acting name.

But off screen, Billie has endured some tough times. Here, the Mirror looks back at her life so far, from her difficult teenage years, popstar fame, turbulent romances and impressive net worth…

Amy Wineh’s classmates in school

Billie’s gifts were evident at a young age, and at 12 years old she made the move from Swindon to London to attend the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School. The school, which aims to develop future talent, has produced many household names, including Amy Winehouse, Billie’s childhood friend.

Billie provided some insight into what Amy really was like as a young girl in a recent episode of Jessie Ware’s Table Manners podcast. Remembering her as ‘ super clever, super bright’, Billie revealed: “She was always cheeky. You know, she was that way all her life. I adored the abstract work she would produce.

Sadly, Amy’s differences didn’t always go down well with her fellow pupils, and Billie remembers the iconic singer being badly bullied. She continued: “She got bullied quite a lot at school because she was doing her own thing, and she liked to push buttons, and do weird stuff. And I had a lot of space for that, but not many of the girls did. It wasn’t the easiest ride.”

Teenage fame struggles

With her infectiously catchy 1998 anthem “Because We Want To,” Billie soared to fame at the age of 15. She became the youngest artist to debut at number one in the UK Chart with the hit, and singles ‘ Honey to The Bee ‘ and ‘ Girlfriend ‘ followed.

Although many teens from the 1990s would have been envious, having a singles chart success at such a young age had its challenges.

She discussed the absurdity of overnight fame while recalling how strange it must have felt to relocate to her own flat before her 16th birthday in a 2021 episode of Desert Island Discs. Speaking of her regrets, Billie told Lauren Laverne: “At the time, it felt really exciting and liberating and satisfied me with this quest to be a grown-up. Sometimes it felt particularly lonely and desperate.

At a very young age, I was seeing and experiencing a lot of life. Now, when I look back at it now that I have my own children, it seems unbelievably unsafe and plays in unhealthily to my parenting. “

Death threats

In addition to her younger years as a star, Billie went through a terrible campaign of harassment. In 2001, a woman penned abuse-laden messages which she then read down the phone to Billie’s record company, Blackfriars Crown Court was told in 2001.

She warned of decapitation, dismemberment, burning, flogging, and shooting and called the teenage chart-topper a “whore.” The woman allegedly started getting hurt because she believed the performer had given her a “dirty look” while watching a TV show she was an audience member.

Boyband heartache

When Ritchie and Ritchie Neville were just teenagers thrust into the spotlight with their respective pop careers, Billie and Ritchie met as teenagers. They were love’s young dream until Ritchie broke Billie’s heart when he cheated.

Ritchie expressed regret over his country-wide betrayal of a Russian beauty while on a country-wide tour, which led to the sale of her story to a British newspaper in 2000.

Speaking on the BBC documentary Boybands Forever he said: “It massively hurt somebody that I loved. I regret any pain I caused but equally I was 19 you know? I made a mistake. It ended a relationship.”

Wild age gap marriage

When she was only 18 years old when she and Chris Evans first married, just five months after their first date, Billie was only 18 years old. Given that Chris was 16 years her senior, the age gap romance raised eyebrows at the time, but Billie looks back on their time together as a period of fun and healing.

Opening up with her former Doctor Who co-star on David Tennant Does A Podcast With…, Billie reflected: “I went and got completely hammered for three years with Chris Evans. So much fun – just living very hard. But with a lot of love and a big dose of curiosity and just, yeah – amazing time.

“It’s funny because everyone saw that time in my life as being so awfully irresponsible, making me look like a *** and putting on weight. That stage of my life was very significant to me. I needed that. The best way for me to heal was to not appear perfect every day in a tabloid.

I can tell you that I was completely unhappy, starving, and dark inside every time I saw a picture of me looking flawlessly groomed and manicured within an inch of my life. And I haven’t brushed my hair since! “

We had an absolutely fantastic time together, she continued. You’re learning a lot, but I suppose that’s how it feels during your uni years. It was an incredible time and, not to undermine our relationship because we also had a very loving relationship. We had a very loving and caring relationship, not just “oh, we’re going out and getting f*****.”

Their tumultuous marriage ended in 2004 amid rumors of “screaming rows,” but Billie and Chris are still reportedly close friends today.

Kids and splits

Billie and Lewis actor turned right-wing activist Laurence Fox tied the knot a year later when they first met in 2006 and first met in 2006. They went on to welcome two sons, Winston and Eugene before calling time on their marriage in 2016.

In a recent interview with British Vogue the mother-of-two said of her controversial ex: “I’ve had to make some choices and a divorce speaks for itself. Or at least it should.” Laurence is often in the spotlight for his much-criticised views.

She continued in the interview, “I close everything down and follow a very strict routine with the kids so that there is consistency.”

They are close to me. That’s all I can do. It’s really, really difficult for me to stop people from telling me things. Everyone wants to talk about it, but I don’t read it. Sometimes I have to say to people, ‘ Please don’t bring this to me, now or ever'”.

She’s also written a touching open letter to Tallulah’s daughter.

She and Johnny Lloyd, the former Tribes frontman, had a relationship, and they welcomed their daughter Tallulah in 2019. After eight years together, they split in 2023, citing that their ‘ relationship ran its course’.

Billie discussed the challenges of juggling motherhood and a hectic career in a candid conversation that aired on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast in 2021. According to Billie, “Striking a balance is impossible, and once you let go and accept that, there are useful changes… I cry at the end of every day and spend an hour in bed saying, ‘ I’ll be better tomorrow, I swear. Everything will improve tomorrow as I read my parenting manual tonight.

In an open letter to Tallulah that was published in Stylist, Billie reflected on how terrified of having a daughter she didn’t want to be before she realized how excited she would be by her arrival.

She wrote: “You have restored – without knowing it – all my faith in strong female energy. I want to take pleasure in your beauty and learn from you. You are a different person from a single woman. And from listing all of my anxieties above (there are many and I promise to always work on myself), I’m at my most calm and able around you. You possess strength.

a large net worth

After her time on Doctor Who in 2005, Billie picked up leading roles in Secret Diary of a Call Girl and I Hate Suzie, which she co-created alongside playwright Lucy Prebble, as well as starring in the Netflix drama, Scoop.

Not to mention her impressive stage career, which included receiving the Laurence Olivier Award and the Best Theatre Actress for Great Britain in 2014, among other honors, for her lead role in Yerma in 2017.

Following her impressive career, she has amassed an impressive net worth. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the actress is thought to have a net worth of $12 million (roughly $ 9 million).

Nigeria flash floods: Which is most affected area, what caused the deluge?

At least 150 people have been killed and thousands have been relocated since Thursday due to flash floods caused by heavy rains in central Nigeria, according to rescue workers, and the death toll is expected to rise.

As roads are reportedly flooded down the Niger River and homes destroyed, search and rescue efforts are ongoing.

What is known about the floods and how susceptible is Nigeria to them.

What areas of Nigeria are flooded?

Mokwa, a market town in the north-central of Nigeria, was a victim of flash floods. The Nigerian Red Cross Society reports that it came after a heavy downpour started at 3 a.m. (02:00 GMT) on Thursday.

The trade center in the south and the north’s food growers meet at Mokwa, which is a crucial meeting and transit point. East of Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, is about 350 kilometers (217 miles) by road. Niger, the fourth-largest state by area, has a population of 400, 000 people, compared to 400, 000 for Mowa, which has a larger area than Belgium or Switzerland.

How many people have passed away?

While search teams continue to find and find missing people and recover bodies, more than 150 people have been confirmed dead.

According to Ahmed Idris, a journalist from Mokwa, the death toll is likely higher because many victims are thought to have been swept down the Niger River.

When an official says 151 people are dead or missing, “you are likely to multiply that by two, three, or four,” he said.

According to Ibrahim Audu Husseini, a spokesman for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, at least 3, 018 people have been displaced, 265 homes have been destroyed, and two bridges have been washed away during the floods.

More than 100 people are missing, according to Gideon Adamu, the head of the Red Cross in Niger State, who was speaking to the AFP news agency on Saturday. 121 of those injured are currently in hospitals.

As long as there are families crying out, Adamu said, “We can’t give up the search.”

In the deluge, Farida Auwalu, the only child from a 16-person family, lost seven children. Four of Farida’s children’s bodies have been discovered and interred.

She told Al Jazeera, “My hope is to see the remaining bodies, give them a decent burial, and have closure.”

What led to Nigeria’s flooding?

According to experts, climate change, unregulated construction, and poor drainage infrastructure have increased Nigeria’s frequency and severity.

Residents of Mokwa also believe a dam burst, which is a bigger issue, according to Idris, who is not yet verifying that. A fourth dam, Kainji, Jebba, and Shiroro, is being constructed in the state of Nigeria.

According to Ugonna Nkwunonwo, a flood risk analyst at the University of Nigeria, there has been a lack of political will to implement the solutions for them despite the identification of flood risks. People aren’t prepared for that kind of rainfall, he told Al Jazeera, and the amount of rain you can expect could probably arrive in one or two months.

In many places, there are inadequate drainage systems, and even the most effective ones frequently have clogged waste, accumulating water on the streets after heavy rains. Additionally, building construction in flood-prone areas has been hindered by rapid urban development and poor planning, which has reduced the land’s ability to absorb water. The land’s capacity to absorb rainfall is further diminished by deforestation for agriculture and development, which causes the land to flow more water.

Local leaders and residents want state and federal authorities to step in and offer long-term assistance and infrastructure to help them rebuild their neighborhoods and protect them from flooding.

Authorities have issued warnings to those living along river banks or those who live nearby, especially at the height of the rains, but every year, we continue to see more lives and property ruined as a result, Idris said.

What is the response of authorities?

Search and rescue operations are conducted by local volunteers, the Nigerian Red Cross, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Additionally, President Bola Tinubu has mandated that emergency measures include temporary shelter and aid.

In a social media post on Saturday, Tinubu stated that “search-and-rescue operations are ongoing, and all relevant federal agencies have mobilized to support the state government’s efforts.”

Rescue and recovery efforts are hampered by the damage to roads and bridges, though.

Some flood survivors are battling to get basic medical care. No one helped the victims by bringing any money or food. Many people don’t have a place to sleep, Hassan Umar told Al Jazeera in Mokwa.

A major bridge that runs through the region’s northern and southern regions collapsed, causing stranded drivers and preventing vehicles from moving across the area.

What natural disaster has Nigeria experienced the most recently?

At least 30 people were killed and nearly half a million people were displaced by severe flooding in the northwestern city of Maiduguri in Borno State in September, causing the city’s two-thirds to submerged.

A prison that had been damaged by floods also had more than 200 prisoners escaping. The Alau dam collapse and weeks of heavy rain in northeastern Nigeria caused the disaster.

More than 1,200 people died and 1.2 million were displaced by flooding in at least 31 of the 36 states in 2024, according to NEMA.

Which Nigerian states are flood-prone?

From Wednesday through Friday, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency issued a warning about flash floods in 15 of the country’s 36 states, including Niger.

Low-lying states like Bayelsa, Rivers, and Delta in the Niger Delta region frequently experience flooding because of their coastal locations. Because they are located near major rivers, the northern states of Kogi, Benue, and Borno are also susceptible to floods.

The rainy season in the nation typically begins in April and lasts until October, when it is the wettest month. Because of inadequate drainage and the destruction of infrastructure during this time of year, problems arise every year.

Fans Set To Welcome PSG Champions League Heroes With Victory Parade

On Sunday, Paris Saint-Germain’s players and staff will stage a victory parade on the Champs-Elysees to congratulate their supporters after a long wait to claim the Champions League.

Emmanuel Macron will also attend the meeting with coach Luis Enrique and his coaching staff, including Desire Doue, the 19-year-old who scored twice in the stunning 5-0 victory over Inter Milan on Saturday.

After the team won the first-ever major club trophy in European history, more than 100 000 people are expected to attend their heroes’ parade on Paris’ showpiece avenue.

Fans poured into the capital’s streets for a long night of extravagant celebrations, releasing flares and fireworks as decades of stale air were released.

After more than 200 cars were torched and police clashed with youths, police in France made nearly 600 arrests, according to the interior ministry.

A 17-year-old boy was stabbed in the chest in Dax, southwest of the city.

A 23-year-old scooter rider in central Paris was also killed when he was struck by a car.

After being hurt by a firework, a police officer was placed in an induced coma.

Traffic will be halted and guarded during the parade on the Champs-Elysees.

After a car crashed into the crowd, leaving 79 people injured, the Liverpool Football Club’s players’ victory parade in the English city on Monday ended in horrifying scenes.

He wrote, “Bravo, we are all proud.” “Tonight, Paris is the heart of Europe.”

The Champions League or the European Cup that followed had the greatest margin of victory in a final.

After PSG’s Qatari owners turned their back on their previous policy of signing star players like Neymar and Lionel Messi, many of the team’s stars, one of the youngest in the competition, are drawn from the enormous football talent pool in Paris’s suburbs.

Jones a contender as Cardiff hope to name new boss in days

Images courtesy of Getty

With Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones still in contention, Cardiff City hope to name their new manager this week.

In order to rebuild their position in League One following their relegation from the Championship this year, the Bluebirds are searching for a ninth manager in four years.

Chairman Mehmet Dalman and chief executive Ken Choo have spoken to the candidates and presented their suggestions to owner Vincent Tan, who will have the final say.

Jones has been a hot commodity since Cardiff fired its manager Omer Riza in April, but he would have to pay Charlton a sizable compensation check.

The fact that Jones led the Addicks to promotion to the Championship last month, which means they will start next season with a division above Cardiff, complicates matters even more.

Former Bolton Wanderers bosses Des Buckingham and Ian Evatt, respectively, have been in an interview.

Additionally, Cardiff have discussions with Wales’ Aaron Ramsey, who took over the club’s final three games of the season on a temporary basis, and Leicester City assistant coach Brian Barry-Murphy.

Ruben Selles, who was put forward for the position after Cardiff fired Erol Bulut last year, has decided to stay in the Championship following his recent dismissal by Hull City.

Sources have indicated to Wales’ BBC Sport that some board members would like to see Tan appoint an experienced manager with a proven track record at this level, such as Jones or Buckingham, who led Oxford to promotion from League One last season.

With Ramsey and former Manchester City academy coaches Barry-Murphy still in the running, others would favor a different approach.

Ramsey, whose contract with Cardiff expires this summer, has not yet decided whether he will play next.

The 34-year-old former Arsenal midfielder enjoyed his brief tenure as manager of his boyhood club, where he was assisted, among others, by his ex-Cardiff and Wales team-mate Chris Gunter.

It has been suggested that Cardiff would need to change its structure if they were to choose Ramsey or Barry-Murphy, who both had only managerial experience at Rochdale between 2019 and 2021.

At least 30 killed in India’s northeast as rains trigger floods, landslides

According to Indian officials and media reports, at least 30 people have died in the northeast of India as a result of persistent monsoon rains over the weekend that caused floods and landslides.

Authorities in Assam state and neighboring Arunachal Pradesh reported at least eight fatalities on Sunday, with nine more in nearby Arunachal Pradesh and several others buried beneath the sludge and debris.

Authorities in Assam’s Guwahati reported that three members of one family were killed in a mudslide, which caused extensive flooding in many areas of the city, prolonged power outages, and the suspension of school and college classes on Saturday.

According to Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma, authorities have temporarily cut off electricity in a number of locations to reduce the risk of electrocution.

Five people died in the state of Mizoram in a landslide, and six others died in Meghalaya. Two deaths have also been confirmed by officials in the states of Nagaland and Tripura.

In a public statement, Meghalaya’s chief minister Conrad K. Sangma urged emergency teams to remain vigilant, “especially in landslide-prone and low-lying areas.”

In Manipur state, the Indian Army carried out a significant rescue operation, evacuating hundreds. The army stated that “people have been relocated to safer locations.” “We provided you with food, water, and essential medicines.”

The weather agency in India has issued a red alert for several northeastern districts as a result of the downpour that has been ongoing for three consecutive days.

Rivers in the area have bred their banks, severing access to many communities, including the Brahmaputra, which flows through India from the Himalayas into Bangladesh.

In India, which is crucial for agriculture but frequently fatal, is the June-to-September monsoon season, which is frequent and deadly. Every year, thousands of people die in the most populous nation on account of the excessive rainfall.

The earliest monsoon to arrive in Mumbai, the capital city of the western state of Maharashtra in more than 20 years, was reported by meteorologists last month when it was nearly two weeks before its usual start.
