Trump with NATO ‘all the way’ on Article 5 as leaders gather at summit

US President Donald Trump has tried to reassure NATO allies over the US committment to the alliance, after previously suggesting that the military alliance’s collective defence principle was open to interpretation.

The US president arrived in The Hague on Wednesday to meet with the 31 other NATO leaders at a summit focused on plans to boost defence spending to shore up Trump’s committment to the alliance.

Asked by reporters about his committment to NATO’s Article 5, which holds that an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all, Trump said: “We’re with them all the way.”

Sitting alongside NATO chief Mark Rutte before the summit, Trump said the expected agreement for allies to increase defence spending to 5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) would be a “great victory for everybody”.

The comments came after Trump stoked doubts over his commitment to the alliance when asked whether Washington would abide by NATO’s mutual defence guarantees.

“Depends on your definition,” Trump told reporters on his way to The Hague. “There’s numerous definitions of Article 5. You know that, right? But I’m committed to being their friends.”

NATO Secretary-General Rutte had earlier stressed that Washington was “totally committed to the alliance”.

“There is absolute clarity that the United States is totally committed to NATO, totally committed to Article 5,” he said, referring to the cornerstone collective defence principle enshrined in NATO’s founding treaty, which holds that an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all.

“And yes, there is also an expectation, which will be fulfilled today, that the Canadians and the Europeans will speed up their spending, making sure that we are able to defend ourselves against the Russians and others,” he said.

He expected the summit to be “transformational” for the alliance, he added.

Washington’s ‘problem with Spain’

Trump has repeatedly complained that Washington carries too much of the military burden, and questioned whether the alliance should defend members who failed to meet its defence spending targets.

His administration has demanded that NATO allies agree to increase their defence spending to 5 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP), up from the current target of 2 percent.

Nine NATO members currently spend less than the existing 2 percent target on defence, according to NATO estimates.

In response to the US demands to boost defence spending , some NATO countries like Germany and the United Kingdom have already announced major new investments in their militaries, acknowledging the need to respond to the threat posed by Russia, in particular.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Tuesday that Germany would increase spending to become “Europe’s strongest conventional army”, while the UK, which has already said it will meet the new spending targets, has announced the purchase of a fleet of fighter jets capable of carrying tactical nuclear missiles.

But other countries signalled their resistance to the proposed targets, which are to be met by a 2035 deadline. Spain, NATO’s lowest defence spender last year, according to NATO estimates, has said it will not be able to meet the target by 2035, calling the figure “unreasonable”.

Belgium has also indicated that it will not make the 5 percent target, while Slovakia said it reserves the right to determine its own defence expenditure, The Associated Press news agency reported.

On Tuesday, Trump singled out Spain’s stance, saying: “There’s a problem with Spain. Spain is not agreeing, which is very unfair to the rest of them, frankly.”

‘A more balanced NATO’

Other NATO leaders, however, expressed their full support for the alliance and the increased defence spending targets on Wednesday.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said “Article 5 is clear … and means collective defence and there is no discussion about this article,” as he arrived at a meeting.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told reporters that the boost to military spending was important and necessary.

“The disarmament was allowed to go on for too long,” she said.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb, whose country borders Russia, told reporters that he believed the alliance was evolving.

‘We were judged for wanting babies but I want mums on my team’

“I want to be a mum more than anything, but it’s just not on the cards for me.”

Nottingham Forest netball head coach Chelsea Pitman is telling BBC Sport about her difficult fertility journey.

She is recalling the conversations and self-questioning that followed “quite a few” miscarriages.

“The future could be bright, who knows,” she adds.

That glimmer remains, but however Pitman’s future plays out, she is determined that pregnancy and motherhood are never taboo topics in sport.

The former England wing attack wants others to feel liberated to share their unspoken stories – whether those are first thoughts about having children, or the recounting of painful experiences such as her own.

Pitman claims netball clubs have backed away in the past from players keen to become mothers and says this must stop.

Looking back only a few years, Pitman points to negative attitudes towards players with maternal ambitions.

She was reluctant to discuss her own wishes, or even the fact she had become pregnant, for fear of jeopardising her playing career.

“I like to think it’s changed,” Pitman says. “Back then, absolutely not.

“You’d be judged by it, or if it came to contracts or recruitment, that’s going to be at the forefront of coaches’ minds in a high-performance environment: ‘What, they want to have a baby?’

“Those conversations need to stop now. Hopefully they have stopped, but 100% back then I know I didn’t want it to be common knowledge.”

At Forest, her attitude is welcoming to prospective parents.

Pitman, 37, is the Diamond who became a Rose.

Born in New South Wales, she won the 2011 World Cup with the Australia Diamonds before her father’s English background enabled her to switch allegiances.

In 2018, she helped the England Red Roses win Commonwealth Games gold on the Gold Coast, getting the better of Australia in the final.

Pitman has travelled extensively in her netball career but has settled in Nottingham, where she has “absolutely fallen in love with the city”.

She guided Forest, in their debut season, to a creditable fifth place in the eight-team Netball Super League, and to a remarkable double over derby rivals and defending champions Loughborough Lightning.

Pitman loves the “muck-in mentality” at Forest and works to fuel the culture.

There are children around the club. Scotland international Iona Christian gave birth to son Lawrie in March 2024 before joining Forest.

Pitman will often care for Lawrie while the squad are working hard in the gym.

She was experiencing “a flat day” recently before Christian handed her Lawrie.

“He just brought me back down to earth and took the stress off me,” Pitman says.

‘Lean on the ones you love’

Pitman thought having a baby would “be so easy”.

She feels her body, which allowed her to achieve so much in netball, “failed” her when she needed it most.

“I was like, ‘OK, my body allowed me to achieve everything there was to achieve in the sense of netball, but it hasn’t allowed me to achieve the one thing that I really wanted’,” she says.

One miscarriage came on England duty, shortly before Covid-19 triggered lockdowns.

Pitman was close to the three-month pregnancy stage at which point many people share their news with friends and family.

“It was really tough,” she recalls.

A cruel twist of fate meant Pitman, who knew she was miscarrying, was selected by UK Anti-Doping for a post-match urine test.

“For people that don’t know, you need to pee in a cup, and when you’re miscarrying, obviously things are happening as well. I just remember looking at the team doctor, going, ‘this is the worst week of my life’,” she says.

Pitman urges anyone going through pregnancy loss to “lean on the ones that you love” rather than delay conversations.

She elected to “just put it somewhere and then deal with it later”.

Eventually she told her story on social media and also spoke to BBC Sport about the toll of the lost pregnancies.

Pitman found she was not alone. A wave of support followed.

“I was like, ‘why do we keep this quiet?'” she says.

‘Life’s too short… do what makes you happy’

Pitman remembers speaking with friends about whether she would choose another gold medal ahead of starting a family. The answer came easily.

“Like 100%, I want to be a mum more than anything, but it’s just not on the cards for me,” Pitman says.

“We don’t know the future. The future could be bright, who knows, but that was probably the bit that I had to understand a little bit.”

Pitman gets “goose bumps” when she learns how other sports are helping women.

WTA Tour tennis players wishing to freeze eggs or embryos, so they can start a family at a later date, will have their ranking protected in future. The tour has also introduced paid maternity leave.

“I truly hope we head down that path,” Pitman says.

Realistically, netball lacks the necessary financial resources though. The Super League relaunched in 2025 but remains semi-professional.

“Until we are able to full-time pay those girls or those women, we can’t have those conversations about what maternity pay looks like and what support we can give in fertility options,” Pitman says.

For now, Pitman encourages players to back their instincts about whether to try for a baby.

Darkest Glastonbury moments ever from drug-fuelled gunman to tragic suicide

As festival-goers embark on the mighty road to Glastonbury 2025, campers have already started setting up for the five-day festival – but a dark side to the world-famous event lurks beneath the surface

With the first Glastonbury-goers descending on Somerset’s Worthy Farm today, another weekend of mesmerising chaos at the fabled festival is about to ensue. But underneath the hedonism and glitter lies a darker side to the world-renowned event.

Since its inaugural days in the 70s, the capacity has stretched from a humble 1,500, with 210,000 revellers now setting up camp at Glasto each year. But accommodating the population of a large town for almost a week has seen Glastonbury experience its share of tragedies and mishaps over the years.

While campers set up their home for the next five nights, world-famous acts prepare for some of their biggest gigs, including headliners The 1975, Neil Young and Olivia Rodrigo. Worthy Farm’s rigorous security and welfare operations have ramped up in recent years.

The organisers now have thorough bag-checks, a 7.8km four metre high fence, watchtowers to prevent fence-jumpers and overcrowding, and even the ‘Glastonbury Jail’, to house anyone caught breaking the rules. But they can only do so much – from bodies in tents and drug overdoses to a harrowing self-immolation, the Mirror looks back at some of the most devastating incidents of the famous festival.

Horror shooting spree

The 1994 Glastonbury line-up saw The Levellers and Rage Against The Machine headline, but away from the stages, a terrifying incident unfolded. On the Saturday night, a gunman started firing indiscriminately into the unsuspecting crowd.

Five people with shot, and at around 10pm, police were called as the emergency situation evolved. The man was discovered to be wielding an automatic pistol, and began to shoot fans who had innocently attended the festival to enjoy the music.

Two women and three men all sustained gunshot wounds before being rushed to hospital for treatment. Thankfully, the victims, aged between 18 and 44 only suffered minor injuries and recovered fully.

Multiple deaths

Over the years, multiple bodies have been recovered at the festival, with the most recent deaths being discovered in 2023. One was a a medical incident in which a man in his 40s was found fead on the old railway line.

The body was that of radio DJ Jason Winder, 48, who died in the early hours of Sunday at the 2023 festival. Avon & Somerset Police said he’d suffered a ‘medical incident’ on the old railway line footpath shortly before 4am and died at the scene.

His death was not treated as suspicious. The same year, a security guard was found in his tent, having died from pneumonia. He had not worked in the 24 hours before his death.

With measles cases currently rising in the South West, Dr Alasdair Wood, consultant in Health Protection at UKHSA South West, told ITV News that those attending the festival should be mindful of illness.

He said: “We want festival-goers to enjoy their time at Glastonbury and other festivals this year. Being aware of the current health risks will help those attending enjoy their time, as much as possible.

“Measles is circulating across the country, and festivals are the perfect place for measles to spread. f you’re not fully vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella, please contact your GP to see if you can get an appointment before coming to the festival.”

Meanwhile, in 2014, a 67-year-old woman died of natural causes at the festival, while a 26-year-old man was suspected to have had a fatal reaction to the drug ketamine. The first drug-related death at Glastonbury was recorded in 1994, when a 23-year-old man died.

Michael Eavis, who founded the arts festival, said at the time: “In daylight we would have been more alert. We’ve had people overdose before, but we sorted them out.”

MP found dead in toilet cubicle

Christopher Shale, a senior Conservative, was discovered dead in a toilet at Glastonbury on the Sunday morning of the 2011 event. An aide and friend of David Cameron, Shale, 56, was found hours after describing the Tories as “graceless, voracious, crass, always on the take” in a leaked strategy document.

Despite the unfortunate timing, an inquest found that the MP, who had no drink or drugs in his system, died from natural causes. Pathologist Dr Basil Purdue told the inquest at Wells town hall that the asthmatic’s weight had put “an excessive workload” on his heart.

Tragic suicide

In 2016, a heartbreaking incident saw a 27-year-old Bristol juggler, who taught young children circus skills, kill himself in a devastating incident. Ashton Launcherley, who was diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder, set fire to himself on the Glastonbury site, the Monday before the festival was due to start.

The inquest heard how Launcherley, who had been detained in mental health hospitals and previously sectioned, had been plagued by voices who spoke in strange accents. He was found crouching in the lotus position in a ditch, doused himself in petrol and deliberately set himself on fire.

He had previously bought a bottle of bleach and told his family he intended to drink it, Bristol Live reported. In the months leading up to his death, he had expressed his fear of the voices he heard.

Ashton told his mother: “I have to kill myself because of the voices. I’m fed up of hearing them.”

Her statement said: “I told him the voices would get worse after he died, that he would have to follow his family around and would not be able to say sorry.” In response, Ashton is said to have replied: “We are all dead. They are killing my family. They are killing all of us.”

Ashton suffered 95 per cent burns, and was taken to the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham. He had multiple-organ failure and died a short while later.

Senior Somerset Coroner Tony Williams, sitting at Taunton, recorded a conclusion of suicide and the cause of death as burns and multiple organ failure. He said he was satisfied “beyond reasonable doubt” that Ashton had intended to end his own life.

Ticking time-bomb

A whistleblower has warned more deaths are to come, after the senior manager slammed the festival for their approach to security. Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, the ex-manager said: “Worst-case scenario, people are going to die, I think we are going to have some massive issues this year.

“How has it [Glastonbury] survived this long without a major disaster? It’s got to be a mixture of luck and a mixture of good will, the jewel in the UK’s crown is actually something of a ticking time-bomb.”

12 posts from ‘12 day war’: How Trump live-posted Israel-Iran conflict

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the rival countries had reached a ceasefire after 12 days of fierce airstrikes between Iran and Israel.

The US struck three important Iranian nuclear facilities on Saturday, prompting the ceasefire. Tehran launched a missile attack on Qatar’s largest Middle Eastern military base, Al Udeid, in retaliation, but there were no reported injuries.

Trump kept active on social media, particularly on Truth Social, which he owns, as Iran and Israel exchanged missiles.

Trump has written 12 posts that detail the Iran-Israel conflict, which he refers to as a “12-day war.”

Jun 13, 2025, 5: 04 PM

I gave Iran a 60-day ultimatum to “make a deal” two months ago. They ought to have done it. Day 61 is today. They couldn’t get there because I told them what to do. They may have a second chance in the future!

Jun 15, 2025, 10: 02 AM

Tonight’s attack on Iran was not the U.S.’s. The full force and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will descend on us at levels never before seen if we are attacked by Iran in any way, shape or form. However, it’s simple to put an end to this bloody conflict before Iran and Israel can agree to a deal! !

Jun 17, 2025, 4: 00 AM

Iran ought to have accepted my recommendation to do so. What a shame and a waste of life. Simply put, Iran is unable to have nuclear weapons. I repeated myself throughout! Tehran should be evacuated right away by everyone!

Jun 17, 2025, 10: 45 AM

I left the G7 summit in Canada to work on a “cease fire” between Israel and Iran, according to a French press release that was mistaken for President Emmanuel Macron. False ! He has no idea why I’m currently traveling to Washington, but it certainly doesn’t have to do with a ceasefire. much larger than that. Whether he intentionally goes against the law or not. Stay Tuned!

Jun 17, 2025, 9: 25 PM

The skies over Iran are now in our hands entirely and in full control. There is plenty of good defensive equipment in Iran, but it is inferior to American-made, conceived, and manufactured “stuff” no one can compare to.

The so-called “Supreme Leader” is hiding out exactly where we are. He’s a simple target, but he’s safe there: We won’t kill him! for the time being, at least not yet. However, we oppose firing missiles at American soldiers or civilians. Our patience is waning. I appreciate you paying attention to this issue!

Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan are the three nuclear sites in Iran that we have successfully attacked. The Iranian airspace currently houses all aircraft. On the main website, Fordow, a full payload of BOMBS was dropped. All aircraft are returning home safely. Our greatest American warriors are in our hearts. There isn’t another force in the world capable of this. THE TIME FOR PEACE IS NOW! I appreciate you paying attention to this issue.

Iran’s nuclear sites are alleged to be “monumental” because of the damage they cause. Both the hits and the accuracy. Our military demonstrated outstanding skill. I appreciate it!

Jun 23, 2025, 2: 25 AM

Why wouldn’t there be a Regime change if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN? MIGA!! !

Jun 24, 2025, 1: 22 AM

We expected a very weak response from Iran, which we have successfully countered. We have officially obliterated their nuclear facilities. 13 of the 14 missiles were knocked down, and one was “set free” because it was heading in a safe direction. No Americans were hurt, and hardly any harm was caused, is a good thing. Most importantly, they have completely eliminated their “system,” and it should be a Hopefully, there won’t be any more HATE. Iran has provided us with timely notice, which prevented any injuries and lost lives. I’m likely to support Iran’s efforts to achieve Peace and Harmony in the Area, and I’m sure that Israel will do the same. I appreciate you paying attention to this issue!

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE! Israel and Iran have fully agreed that a complete and total CEASEFIRE will occur (in approximately 6 hours after Israel and Iran have finished their final missions that are still in progress)! The War will be deemed to have ended after 12 hours. The World will salute an Official End to the 12 Day War upon the 24th Hour, while Iran will officially start the CEASEFIRE, and Israel will officially begin the CEASEFIRE at the 12th Hour. The other side will remain MERCYFUL and RESPECTFUL throughout each CEASEFIRE. I want to congratulate both countries, Israel and Iran, on having the stamina, courage, and intelligence to end what should be known as “THE 12 DAY WAR,” on the assumption that everything will go as planned. The Middle East could have been completely destroyed in this War, but it didn’t and never will! God blesses the world, God blesses Iran, God blesses the Middle East, God blesses America, and God bless Israel!

Make-up artist, Laura Ann Mele, has been trusted with Lauren’s look since at least November 2023, when the former newsreader first appeared on Laura’s Instagram page.

The New Yorker chose natural makeup with a seductive shimmer for the Women of the Year awards from Glamour at the time.

Laura, who arrived in Venice on June 24, has worked with Lauren several times, including for her 53rd birthday party, multiple award ceremonies, and the bride-to-be’s debut Met Gala appearance in 2024.

Most recently, she did Lauren’s makeup for her much-criticised trip to space on Jeff’s Blue Origin rocket. Joined by Katy Perry, Lauren skipped onto the rocket in a skin-tight blue jumpsuit, but was slammed by many for a ‘monumental waste of money’.

Sophie Rose, a stylist, is the hairstylist.

Hairstylist Sophie Rose is a long-time member of Lauren’s glam squad. Given how frequently she has collaborated with Lauren, the Californian’s name was reported on the wedding guest list.

Lauren frequently appears on Sophie’s Instagram account, including when the famous hairdresser posted a photo of her client’s “bridal” look at the Vanity Fair’s Oscars party with Jeff in March.

Former England midfielder Lallana retires

Former England midfielder Adam Lallana has retired from playing at the age of 37.

Lallana, who won 34 caps for his country, returned to Southampton last season after making his name in his first spell there.

He joined Liverpool from Saints for £25m in 2014 and went on to win the Premier League and Champions League.

“As I call time on my playing career, I do so with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride,” Lallana said on his social media accounts.

“Southampton… the place where it all started, and fittingly where it ends. It’s the club I ultimately owe everything to.”

Lallana came through Southampton’s academy before making his debut for the first team as an 18-year-old in 2006.

He went on to feature more than 250 times for Saints and was part of the squad that won back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League.

Lallana was captain when he left for Anfield during a summer where he also played for England at the 2014 World Cup.

After winning the Champions League with Liverpool in 2019 and the league title the following campaign, Lallana joined Brighton before returning to St Mary’s in 2024.

He only made five starts as Saints were relegated to the Championship.

“I’m proud of the playing career I’ve had and have no regrets about any of it,” Lallana added.

“I embrace all the highs and all the lows as they’ve shaped me into who I am.

“To everyone who made the journey so special, the staff at each club and organisation, the managers and coaches, my teammates, and of course the supporters — thank you.

“But most of all, to my own team… my family. My wife Emily, our amazing sons, my mum, dad and sister, thank you for putting up with me and being in my corner through it all.
