South Korea election results 2025: Who won, who lost, what’s next?

Lee Jae-myung, the candidate for the opposition Democratic Party, is poised to become South Korea’s next president after provisional results of a snap election showed him on course for a comfortable win.

The election was triggered by former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s short-lived imposition of martial law in December.

The 61-year-old Lee is expected to be sworn in on Wednesday, becoming the country’s 14th president after defeating Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party (PPP). The South Korean president serves a single five-year term without the possibility of re-election.

The PPP’s Yoon was impeached and removed from office in early April for his martial law debacle. The shock move sparked weeks of protests and investigations and made Yoon South Korea’s shortest-serving president.

Here is what you need to know about Tuesday’s election and its impact:

Who won South Korea’s presidential election?

With 85 percent of the ballots counted, the National Election Commission (NEC) said provisional results showed Lee winning more than 48 percent of the votes with Kim at 42.9 percent.

Although the NEC is yet to formally declare a winner, Kim has conceded defeat and congratulated Lee on his win.

Shortly before Kim’s concession, Lee emerged outside his house in Seoul, where throngs of supporters had gathered. Lee told them he was “highly likely to become the president”.

Nearly 80 percent of the country’s 44.4 million eligible voters cast ballots – the highest turnout since 1997, according to the NEC.

Earlier, exit polls by South Korea’s three major TV stations – KBS, MBC and SBS – projected a comfortable win for Lee. The exit polls projected more than 50 percent of the vote for the opposition candidate and 39 percent for Kim.

Trailing behind them was Lee Jun-seok of the conservative New Reform Party. Analysts said Kim underperformed, hurt by his ties to Yoon and his failure to persuade Lee Jun-seok to unify the right-wing vote. By late on Tuesday, Lee Jun-seok also had conceded defeat.

Who is Lee Jae-myung, South Korea’s new president?

Lee – who served as governor of South Korea’s most populous province, Gyeonggi, and mayor of Seongnam near the capital, Seoul – is a divisive figure. This election marked the human rights lawyer-turned-politician’s third attempt to secure the presidency.

Lee lost the last presidential election to Yoon by the slimmest margin in the country’s democratic history. He went on to lead the Democratic Party to a landslide victory in last year’s legislative elections and was the driving force behind the opposition-led campaign to remove Yoon from office.

During the six-hour martial law period, Lee scaled the National Assembly walls to bypass military blockades, livestreamed his entry and urged citizens to protest. Nearly two-thirds of the lawmakers ultimately made it past the barricades to vote unanimously to end the emergency measures.

Despite his critics calling him a dangerous populist, Lee has promised to pursue pragmatic diplomacy: calling South Korea’s alliance with the United States the foundation of its foreign policy and promising to solidify a Seoul-Washington-Tokyo partnership, a stance that is not much different from the position held by the conservatives.

He has preached patience over US President Donald Trump’s tariff policy, arguing it would be a mistake to rush negotiations in pursuit of an early agreement with Washington.

Lee has also pledged to improve relations with rival North Korea, including reopening dialogue, restoring military hotlines and reviving denuclearisation talks.

The East Asian country’s deep-seated economic inequality is another issue Lee has promised to fix. He has advocated for a four-and-a-half-day workweek in a country known for its demanding work culture.

Lee is facing five ongoing trials related to corruption and other criminal charges. Most of these cases have been delayed until after the election. He denies any wrongdoing and says the charges are politically motivated.

How did Lee win?

Lee capitalised on his role as an opposition member by standing against Yoon’s martial law bid and promising to guide the country out of its political and economic turmoil.

Experts said Yoon also left the PPP in crisis as infighting plagued the party when it tried to choose his successor.

Although Kim won the party primary, PPP leaders tried to replace him with former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo. On the eve of the party’s campaign launch, they cancelled Kim’s candidacy, only to reinstate him after party members opposed the move.

Youngshik Bong, research fellow at Yonsei University in Seoul, said the infighting as well as divisions in the conservative camp over Yoon’s decree cost it support.

“Kim Moon-soo has not set his position clearly on the martial law declaration,” Bong said. “He has not distanced himself from the legacy of Yoon, but at the same time, he has not made it clear whether he believes the declaration of martial law was a violation of the constitution. So the PPP has not really had enough energy to mobilise its support bases.”

What were the key issues in the election?

The botched martial law cast a shadow over the election. It put Lee, after his loss to Yoon in 2022, back on track for the presidency.

“This election would not have happened if not for the declaration of martial law by Yoon Suk-yeol and his impeachment,” Bong said. “These issues have sucked in all others like a vortex. Everything else is marginal.”

On the campaign trail, Lee pledged to bring to justice anyone involved in Yoon’s failed martial law bid and to introduce tighter controls on the president’s ability to declare martial law.

A slowing economy, challenges posed by Trump’s America First policies and worsening ties with North Korea were other topics that mattered to the voters.

What is the significance of Lee’s win? What’s next?

Lee is to take his oath of office on Wednesday morning. The certification process is expected to take no more than 10 minutes.

Norwich appoint Bristol City’s Manning as new head coach

Rex Features

Norwich City have appointed Bristol City boss Liam Manning as their new head coach on a four-year contract.

Manning had been in charge at Ashton Gate since November 2023 and led the Robins to this season’s play-offs, only to lose 6-0 on aggregate to Sheffield United.

He replaces Johannes Hoff Thorup, who was sacked by Norwich on 22 April with the team 14th in the Championship following a run of six defeats in eight games.

First-team coach Jack Wilshere, the former Arsenal and England midfielder, was put in interim charge for the final two games of the season, but he also left after learning he would not be considered for the permanent post.

“I’m privileged and honoured to have the opportunity to work for this fantastic football club. It’s a wonderful club with a big history and tradition,” said Manning.

“It’s clear, there has already been a lot of valuable groundwork laid in recent seasons – it’s now important we build further on that and move the club forward.”

Manning’s contract at Bristol City ran until the end of next season and the Canaries have paid an undisclosed sum to meet a release clause in order to bring him in.

The 39-year-old was born in Norwich and played for the club’s academy before joining Ipswich Town – but he never made a senior appearance for them and spent most of his career in non-league football.

His first coaching job was at West Ham and he then took charge of Belgian club Lommel in 2020 before returning to England as MK Dons head coach the following year.

He guided them to the League One play-offs in 2022 and subsequently had an eight-month spell at Oxford United, who were second in the third tier when he accepted an offer to move on to Bristol City.

Despite Bristol City having the smallest squad in the Championship this past season, Manning guided them to their first play-off finish in 17 years, largely built on a strong foundation of home form and squad togetherness.

Only promoted Burnley and Leeds, and play-off finalists Sheffield United bettered their record at home of 13 wins, seven draws and three defeats.

‘Liam’s ambitions match our own’

Last November, Mark Attanasio, whose Norfolk FB Holdings group are now the majority shareholders at Carrow Road, set a target of a return to the top flight in “three to five years” and Manning’s task now will be to try and achieve that ahead of schedule.

“This is an exciting appointment, and we are so happy to get it over the line and have him on board,” said sporting director Ben Knapper.

“It quickly became clear that Liam’s ambitions match our own and we are all committed to driving this club forward towards our targets.

“Liam knows the league, has consistently demonstrated an ability to outperform resources and his approach aligns with our footballing ideas and strategy.

“He is an exceptionally bright coach who will push himself, and everyone around him, to develop and improve. We are so excited to have him as a key part of our club.”

Former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil and ex-Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders were also spoken to and considered for the head coach role.

Analysis – ‘first Norwich-born boss’

By Chris Goreham, BBC Radio Norfolk’s Norwich City commentator

Norwich City’s extensive search for a new head coach has led to the club’s first ever Norwich-born boss.

Liam Manning’s formative years as a Carrow Road season-ticket holder are a nice extra but it’s not why he’s been appointed.

Canaries sporting director Ben Knapper has expressed frustration that they fell so far short of the play-offs last season. “When I look at the teams that did make it, it confirms that kind of belief,” he said.

Envious eyes were being cast in the direction of Ashton Gate where Liam Manning’s well coached team was outperforming the sum of its parts.

This afternoon, our Royal team reported on the security scare at Windsor Castle following an alleged break-in on the grounds of the residence. The man is believed to have climbed over the wall to get into the castle grounds on Sunday before he was quickly detained by officers from the Metropolitan Police, which is responsible for security at the address.

A man in his 30s was then handed over to the local police force, Thames Valley, before being arrested on suspicion of trespass and possession of a Class A drug. However, as the intruder is said to have entered the grounds near Town Gate, it was some distance away from the royals’ home.

The man is also said to have not entered the inner buildings of Windsor Castle. A source told The Sun: “He broke into the castle near Town Gate and was quickly detained by police. It was a crazy thing to do and caused quite a stir but at this stage it appears there was no intent to cause any serious harm.”

Meanwhile, three Brits are facing the death penalty after being accused of smuggling nearly a kilogram of cocaine into Indonesia in Angel Delight sachets, our News team reported this afternoon. Jonathan Christopher Collyer, 38, and Lisa Ellen Stocker, 39, were arrested in Bali on February 1 after being stopped by customs at the X-ray machine.

It detected suspicious items in their luggage disguised as food packages, said prosecutor I Made Dipa Umbara. Mr Umbara told the District Court in Denpasar that a lab test result confirmed that 10 sachets of Angel Delight powdered dessert mix in Collyer’s luggage combined with seven similar sachets in his partner’s suitcase contained 993.56 grams of cocaine, worth an estimated six billion rupiah (£272,000).

Police later arrested Phineas Ambrose Float, 31, after a controlled operation which saw the other two suspects hand the drug to him in a hotel car park in Denpasar. He is being tried separately.

According to data by the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections’, around 530 people, including 96 foreigners, are on death row in Indonesia, mostly for drug-related crimes. Those convicted face lengthy prison sentences or, in some cases, execution by firing squad.

Brooklyn Beckham savagely writes David out of history with cutting comment

It’s never a dull moment for the Beckhams – and now, Brooklyn has reportedly distanced himself from the family after a string of rows, our Showbiz team reports. The chef initially appeared to be offering an olive branch to dad David, with the name of his new hot sauce range, Cloud23, previously said to be a “warm nod” to their father-son relationship.

However, Brooklyn himself gave a very different account when explaining the inspiration behind the branding in an interview with Glamour Germany. He said: “The 23 stands for our engagement date and my age back then,” making no reference to his sporting legend dad.

Elsewhere in the interview, Brooklyn, 26, showed off his tattoos, with a number of these elaborate body art pieces being nods to his parents and younger siblings. This includes his dad’s birth year, 1975, inked on his thumb, and the initials DVBRCH, standing of course for David, Victoria, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper.

However, these personal pieces of body art weren’t part of the discussion about Brooklyn’s tats, with the conversation instead focusing on his dedications to wife Nicola, and members of her family.

Russia threatens UK with nuclear apocalypse after Keir Starmer’s defence warning

In other news, our Politics team reported that the Putin regime is mocking Sir Keir Starmer over his “war footing” defence review warning of the Russian threat. The Kremlin’s most prominent TV propaganda show warned of nuclear Armageddon facing Britain with “painful” radiation deaths.

And the Kremlin-funded broadcast urged the Scots and Welsh to declare independence from London before it was too late. The Putin broadcast claimed that a “very pretty” woman standing beside Starmer at his defence review announcement showed – from her expressions – that many Britons doubted his strategy in making the UK “battle ready” to fight Russia.

Leading Putin TV mouthpiece Vladimir Solovyov declared: “I can’t understand why the British have gone mad [with the new UK defence review]. Where do they want to clash with us? At what point?

“Or do they think that we have already landed, entered the Thames somewhere and are now storming Westminster Abbey….? We are moving to combat readiness, said Starmer. But considering how he boxes, I’m afraid to even imagine his combat readiness….”

Tourist’s ‘nightmare’ as Corfu hotel ‘had no English food’ and not enough chips

Finally, a holidaymaker revealed she was “sick to death of looking at rice” after the hotel she stayed at during her Greek getaway came with “no English food”. Susan Edwards, from Westerhope, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, has refused to book with TUI again after paying for an all-inclusive trip to Corfu where she wasn’t offered English food.

The mum, 69, had jetted off to the Greek island paradise with her two cousins, aged 77 and 78, 50-year-old second cousin and daughter, 30, on a TUI package holiday. But she said the vacation was “horrendous” from the minute they arrived, and that the Brits were left with “no food” they could eat.

Speaking to the Newcastle Chronicle, Susan said the group discovered on the first morning of their stay at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel that there was “no English food” available. The mum, who suffers from ulcerative colitis, lamented the lack of bacon and sausage, saying she and the group were unhappy when they were presented with traditional Greek fare.

She said: “On a morning you could have toast, a hard boiled egg, or something in sauce. There was no bacon. For breakfast there was mozzarella and sliced tomatoes. There was no hot bacon or sausage. We got chips one day. One day out of the whole lot.”

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed the stark reality of farming, despite the roaring success of his Amazon Prime show Clarkson’s Farm. The motoring icon turned agriculture aficionado, who has won hearts with his ventures on the farm in the currently streaming fourth season of the series, confessed that the acclaim of the show doesn’t equate to a flourishing farm business.

Speaking frankly to a fan, Jeremy didn’t shy away from laying bare the grim status of his farming endeavours and hinted he could be pocketing more dosh doing just about anything else. His forthright admission follows his recent analogy that likened farmers to miners, describing them both as ‘pawns for politicians’.

The viewer had remarked: “Have watched all of the series, they’re quite entertaining. But, please don’t try to tell me he earns more from farming than from Amazon Video”.

Jeremy hit back with his typical candour: “I could earn more from selling my toe nail clippings than farming. And I have a horrible feeling that this year will be worse than ever.”

However, the former Top Gear presenter isn’t one to rest on his laurels; he’s actively exploring ideas to attract visitors to his farm, such as an “outdoor cinema” concept he floated earlier in May.

Jeremy Clarkson has hinted at the possibility of bringing an outdoor cinema experience to his farm, following a fan’s suggestion on social media. The fan proposed: “Why don’t you put a big screen projector TV on your farm and make picnic baskets of your produce or allow people to have picnics using local produce and encourage food trucks etc. Bring back the outdoor cinema for sunset screenings. It’s so fun.”

To which Clarkson replied with interest: “Been talking about that very thing today.” This tease comes as opinions are split over the cost of fare at The Farmer’s Dog, the pub owned by the TV personality.

A detractor commented on the pricing: “Thought Jeremy Clarkson wanted an affordable pub for customers. £24 for pie and veg is a bit much.”

Clarkson, ever ready for a retort, offered a witty response: “Have you seen beef prices right now? If you could make it for less, I’ll give you a job.”

The original poster later expressed their confusion about current fair pricing: “To be honest I wouldn’t know what is a decent price anymore. Constantly changing.” Another individual added a touch of humour: “It ain’t Wetherspoons, pal.”

On the flip side, a content diner praised the establishment: “Was the best £24 spent! Fantastic meal there, great food and all local produce – stop whinging!”.
