Once more, icily’s Mount Etna, which erupted into a spectacular display by ejecting a massive cloud of smoke and ash several kilometers into the sky, has at once captured the attention of the world.
Despite the dramatic scenes, authorities reassured the public that residents were safe from the volcanic eruption.
In response to the volcanic activity, Catania airport raised the alert level on Monday. No immediate problems were reported, but flights continued as usual.
An official update made it clear that volcanic ash cloud emission had stopped by the afternoon.
The spectacle presented by Europe’s most active volcano, according to Italy’s INGV National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, was caused by a southeast crater collapse that led to a cascade of hot lava flows. This eruptive phase has been occurring for the 14th time in recent months.
According to INGV official Stefano Branca, the risk zone was restricted to the summit of Etna, which was made available to tourists as a precaution.
According to President of Sicily Renato Schifani, the eruption’s lava flows “did not pose a threat to the population” and had not breached the volcano’s natural containment area.
Tyler Weaver, an amateur Englishman, will make his US Open debut after earning a spot on Monday.
The big names included Rickie Fowler and Max Homa, the US PGA Tour’s “longest day” of golf, among others.
With a total of 47 players available, US Open hopefuls fought 36 holes at 10 locations throughout the US and Canada to reserve their spot.
Weaver, a 22-year-old member of the England Golf men’s squad, led by 17-year-old American Mason Howell, who finished third at 11 under to become one of three amateurs to qualify for Atlanta.
One of seven qualifiers in Ontario was Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen, with England’s Matt Wallace coming in seventh overall.
In a five-man play-off, fellow American Cameron Young took the final spot while South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen finished first in Columbus, Ohio.
Homa, 34, was the only player at the event who had recently split from his caddie, so the world number 90 had to carry it for the entire 38 holes due to a play-off.
Ryan McCormick and Trevor Cone won the first two spots at Woodmont in Maryland, and American amateur Bryan Lee and Australian Marc Leishman won the other two in a play-off.
Play will resume on Tuesday due to the bad weather that caused the suspension of the Florida event.
Luke Poulter, an amateur from England and the son of former world number five Ian Poulter, is one of the contenders.
The 21-year-old was in fourth when play was called for a halt, and he won the first round with a score of 69. West Palm Beach offers four spots for him.
After a first round of 70, fellow countryman Tom McKibbin, a 2010 US Open winner from Northern Ireland, is also in contention.
From 12 to 15 June, the US Open will take place in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
The unthinkable possibility is real, right? After the Bosnian War, which was marred by atrocities and genocide, rumors surfaced that wealthy foreigners were fleeing to Sarajevo to pay for a gruesome and forbidden thrill: human beings were being hunted for sport.
Oyun-Erdene resigned on Tuesday after the previous day’s confidence vote was quashed by Parliament, according to a parliamentary statement.
The prime minister’s family’s lavish lifestyle has been causing a flurry of public outcry in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city.
After the secret ballot results were revealed to Parliament, Oyun-Erdene said, “It was an honor to serve my country and people in times of difficulties, including pandemics, wars, and tariffs.”
Oyun-Erdene, who held office for more than four years, had refuted the allegations of corruption. He attributed “major, visible, and hidden interests” for waging an “organized campaign” to dethrone the government in an address to Parliament before the vote.
If he was forced out of power, he had also warned of political unrest and economic chaos.
Only 44 lawmakers supported him while 38 opposed, so his arguments did not persuade the Parliament.
In the 126-seat Parliament, the prime minister had to pass a 64-vote threshold.
Oyun-Erdene, who took office as prime minister in January 2021 and won re-election in July 2024, will continue in his caretaker capacity. Within 30 days, a successor must be named.
Many claim that wealthy elites are squandering the profits from a decades-long coal mining boom. The landlocked democracy in Northern Asia has endured deep corruption for decades.
On Monday, hundreds of young people marched with white placards and chanted, “Resignation is simple,” in a square outside the parliament building.
Numerous protesters claimed to have been shocked by what they have described as deeply ingrained social injustice and corruption.
Mongolia’s Corruption Perceptions Index has dropped since Oyun-Erdene took office, reflecting the decline in Mongolia’s ranking.
Millions of Muslims will participate in the annual Hajj, a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage for all adult Muslims who have the physical and financial resources to make the journey between June 4 and August.
Have you, however, ever wondered how this ground-based journey would go?
The five-day process is illustrated in the animated video below. Prefer a detailed view? For a daily breakdown, scroll down.
Pilgrims must enter a ihram, a physical and spiritual state, before the Hajj begins. This includes wearing particular clothing for men and modest attire for women, such as two simple white cloths, according to the niyah, or intention to perform the Hajj. All pilgrims are equal before God, so these identical white garments remove any obvious distinctions between class, wealth, or nationality.
Many pilgrims circumnavigate the Kaaba, a black stone structure at the center of Mecca’s Great Mosque (Masjid al-Haram), seven times in a counterclockwise direction after ihram. This represents the one God’s worship in unity. The pilgrims can then perform the sa’i, a seven-time ritual of walking within the mosque’s Safa and Marwa hills.
The Kaaba, or “cube,” is the religion’s most revered site and serves as the qibla, which Muslims travel in when they pray. According to Muslims, the Kaaba was constructed at God’s will and by Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) and his son Ishmaeel (Ismaeel) as a sign of the return to pure monotheism.
The Kaaba measures 13.1 metres (43 feet) high, 12.8m (42ft) in length, and 11.03m (36ft) in width. The kiswah, a black cloth known as the kaaba, is decorated with gold Arabic text with verses from the Qurans.
