Surrey dominate Durham, Thunder beat Bears

Surrey continue to set the pace in the women’s T20 Blast as punishing batting by England’s Danni Wyatt-Hodge ushered them to a comfortable nine-wicket win over Durham at The Oval.

After restricting the visitors to 141-5, they made it four wins out of four by reaching 143-1 with 43 balls to spare, Wyatt-Hodge hitting the winning boundary to finish with 74 not out from just 36 balls.

In Sunday’s other game, Lancashire Thunder picked up only their second win in five matches as Tara Norris made an unbeaten 33 and took 3-25 to help them beat Bears by five runs.

Chasing a target of 163, the home side needed 14 off the final over at Edgbaston, but could only muster eight, with Natasha Wraith finishing on 57 not out from 36 deliveries, the highest score of the match.

The game against Surrey began badly for Durham, who had both openers bowled inside the first five overs – Suzie Bates and Mady Villiers dismissed by Ryana MacDonald-Gay.

From 29-3, Hollie Armitage led a revival, adding 40 with Bess Heath (27) and 38 with Mia Rogers, and although she went to 50 off 49 balls in the last over and Katherine Fraser hit the final ball of the innings for six, their score did not look enough.

So it proved as Wyatt-Hodge and Bryony Smith matched each other shot for shot in bringing up a 50 partnership in the fourth over.

Wyatt-Hodge launched Katie Levick over mid-wicket for a maximum, the first of two sixes in her innings to go with 11 fours, but the stand came to an end on 94 when Smith was caught in the deep off Phoebe Turner for 44 from 28 balls.

Replacement Kira Chathli opened her account with a six and made an unbeaten 19 from 13 before Wyatt-Hodge ended the game by cutting Bates to the point boundary.

“It definitely is a big win. We bowled and fielded really well as a team and then Danni and Bry smashed it and got us over the line,” said MacDonald-Gay.

Bears come up short despite Wraith knock

Emma Lamb was back in the Lancashire side against the Bears following England duty but it was not a happy return as she was bowled through the gate for five by Issy Wong in the first over.

They struggled to 31-4, batting in a steady drizzle, before a 69-run partnership between Ailsa Lister and Australian Alana King which ended when the former was lbw for 36 as she tried to sweep Hannah Baker.

King made 21 before hitting Millie Taylor (2-25) to deep mid-wicket but Norris lofted a six over mid-off as she steered Thunder to 162-7.

Bears made a positive start in reply as Davina Perrin made a rapid 34 before being bowled by one from Grace Johnson which kept low.

Charis Pavely contributed 27 but they were losing momentum at 101-6 in the 14th over when Wong was bowled by Norris as she tried to make room to force the ball through the off side.

Wraith, though, kept them in the game, clearing the ropes and hitting four fours as she reached 50 from just 29 balls, but wickets continued to fall at the other end and she lost the strike midway through the last over as Thunder squeezed home.

Molly-Mae Hague reveals secret struggle with Tommy Fury reunion as pair enjoy staycation

Molly-Mae Hague has admitted there are certain parts of her newfound relationship with boxer and Love Island partner Tommy Fury that she is struggling to deal with

Reality TV star Molly-Mae Hague has admitted there are parts of her rekindled romance with Tommy Fury that she is still struggling with. The former Love Island pair stunned fans last year when they announced their shock split after five years together.

However, the parents of Bambi have decided to give love another go and went public recently after keeping their reunion under wraps. Since announcing they are back together, the family of three have enjoyed several sweet trips, including a staycation in the Cotswolds this weekend.

But the Maebe founder has admitted it’s not all smooth sailing. Speaking to her fans in her latest vlog update on YouTube, Molly-Mae confessed it has felt strange adjusting back to having their relationship in the open.

She candidly discussed how she struggled on the family’s recent trip to Disneyland Paris. She told the camera: “Disneyland was just like… I don’t want to say not enjoyable, because we had a lovely time. Disneyland was just, we went at the wrong time.”

Molly-Mae explained how the trio went to the park with loved ones during the school holidays. However, duo to their status, she revealed the family was constantly being filmed and photos being taken.

Despite trying to play down the situation, she said she noticed a number of people snapping them without permission. And it was that which was the hardest part of the trip as they had their young daughter in tow, Molly admitted.

She went on: “At Disneyland, when I was with Bambi, it’s quite hard to navigate that. When you have a toddler, you’re out with your partner, and there’s already a little bit of a new thing that you’re back out together, and you’re trying to navigate that, and then you can see people looking and staring and filming”.

Molly-Mae added: “It was my birthday as well, and it was just like… kind of tricky to figure out if we were having boundaries, or there weren’t any boundaries”.

She admitted the incident has meant she won’t be rushing back to enjoy a family trip out in the open anytime soon. Despite saying “we should have known better”, Molly said their newfound relationship’s attention means they will “feel it more now”.

“It’s just a bit like new territory”, she said. “Because for people it’s a bit like taboo, I don’t know, but if people see us out, it’s like ‘ oh, like let’s film! ‘ I don’t know – I just think I maybe felt it a bit more this time”.

Over the weekend, Molly also shared a number of sweet snaps from their more intimate time away together in the Cotswolds. Posting to Instagram, Molly said: “This look is giving mum who’s had approx 3 seconds to get ready.”

She then posted a photo taken at Aynhoe Park, a 17th-century country estate located at the boundaries of Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire – just next to the Cotswolds – and wrote “Restoration Hardware morning… this place is my heaven. Interior spam incoming”.

The mum-of-one continued to upload a series of images of the venue’s luxurious interior, including two adorable photos of Bambi carrying a little pram while walking around the rooms. She also posted pictures of her favourite bedrooms and explained how her daughter put her baby doll to bed in every room of the building.

A few days later, Sophie shared snaps from a pal’s wedding showing off her bump properly for the first time in an emerald green floor length dress. As she posed for a series of selfies at the nuptials, she wrote in the caption: “Last weekend I celebrated one of my friends of 24 years getting married and it was everything and more.” In another snap featured in the carousel, Sophie and Jamie take a bathroom selfie in which the reality star’s bump can clearly be seen.

Pal Millie Mackintosh wrote in the comments: “Omg you in green. Also the perfect dress for your gorgeous bump! So happy for you guys xxx.” Fellow MIC star Emily Blackwell, who recently became a mum herself after welcoming daughter Eva with fiancé Jordan Alexander, posted: “Love the dress!” While Former The Only Way Is Essex star Ferne McCann commented: “Wow mamma you look so beautiful.”

It’s not known when Sophie and Jamie’s baby is due, but the TV and radio star opened up about the “realities of motherhood” on her podcast with pal Melissa on Wednesday.

Explaining she had just returned home from a trip to Portugal with her sister, Georgia, baby niece, Bella, she shared: “I really got an insight into the baby world. Georgia’s never had any help and the level of respect I have for mums – it’s not a joke”.

She continued: “The amount of stuff! You’re packing up a planet every time you move. Even carrying the baby is quite heavy. I was like: ‘ Ow, my arm hurts do you want her back? ‘”

Despite admitting baby Bella was the “most hyperactive child ever”, Sophie said she was “in love with her”, adding the family had “a really sweet, wholesome time”. However, she did say that she was “unable to switch off” during the holiday, adding: “Me and mum were so tired”.

Opetaia beats Squeo to retain IBF cruiserweight title

Jai Opetaia produced a fifth-round stoppage to beat Claudio Squeo and retain his IBF and Ring Magazine cruiserweight world titles.

The Australian dominated the bout on the Gold Coast and landed a firm uppercut in the third round before connecting with some damaging combinations.

Opetaia, 29, then floored Italian Squeo in the fourth round with a punishing shot to the body.

Victory was delivered in the next round after a fierce right hook to the jaw forced Squeo to hunch over and take a knee as the home favourite extended his unbeaten run to 28 fights.

Following the bout, Opetaia once again voiced his desire for a unification bout with Mexico’s WBO and WBA cruiserweight champion Gilberto Ramirez.

“We did what we had to do,” said Opetaia.

“I’m chasing this unification fight and it’s frustrating.

“Gilberto Ramirez – next fight, let’s get it on. I’m chasing the belts. The fight is easy to be made. Let’s do it.”

Meanwhile, Japan’s Junto Nakatani overcame compatriot Ryosuke Nishida, who retired with an eye injury in Tokyo, to add the IBF bantamweight title to his WBC belt.

Nakatani remains the number one fighter in the division after firing several punches towards the right eye of Nishida, which prompted an inspection from the ringside doctor after the sixth round.

Victory for the three-weight world champion extends his unbeaten record to 31 wins, including 24 knockouts.

Another Japanese rival, Naoya Inoue, was watching on from the stands and could be in line for a highly anticipated meeting with the 27-year-old next year.

Countryfile’s Adam Henson opens up on ‘very challenging’ and ‘horrible’ struggle

Countryfile presenter Adam Henson, who has been fronting the BBC show since 2001, has opened up about a ‘very challenging’ year for the farming and tourism sectors

Countryfile’s Adam Henson has described 2024 as a “very challenging” year for the tourism and farming industries, primarily due to the extreme weather conditions.

The past year recorded the sixth wettest spring in history, followed by an underwhelming summer that only saw a brief heatwave in August. In fact, the 2023-24 season witnessed the highest number of named storms since the naming system began a decade ago.

The persistent rain carried on into September and autumn, wreaking havoc on the harvest, according to Adam.

He said: “Yeah, it’s been very challenging for, well, tourist enterprises, outdoor tourist enterprises and farms right across the UK, just because it’s been horrible.

“We’ve certainly got some fields with quite a lot of crops in them that we haven’t actually harvested and we never will. “

In a conversation with Minerva magazine, Adam mentioned that nowadays, over 60 per cent of farmers take on a second job as a safeguard against poor seasons. “Duncan, my business partner, over the last 30 years, continued developing the farm park, and then to grow and expand on the types of diversification we’ve got,” he elaborated.

At 59-year-old, Adam reflected on the wisdom he gained from his father Joe Henson, who hosted a TV programme called In The Country. He remembers his dad emphasising that adaptability is crucial for enduring tough times.

Adam shared how witnessing his father’s career flourish through television work and the popularity of the Farm Park taught him the importance of having diverse sources of income at the farm.

Adam took a hands-on approach to the family venture in his teens. “I love the Farm Park – the camping and glamping element too as well as the farming. We have a beautiful spot here and I love to share that. “

But he warns that farming comes with its shares of highs and lows. I believe you must be incredibly committed to farming. Many of my friends, who were farmers when I was a kid, never knew whether or not they would have a good year.

Adam’s family farm’s survival was threatened by the Foot and Mouth Crisis, which put him in a dire position.

Adam described that time in The Countrywoman’s Guide as “a really difficult time for us.” We had a lot of money borrowed, on top of our significant overdraft, to help the business advance, and we were both farm tenants. We were also heavily invested in Cotswold Farm Park. “

Soon after he and his business associate Duncan had taken out loans to expand their business, the outbreak began.

The UK was in shock as more than 2,000 cases were recorded nationwide and more than 6 million sheep and cattle were killed to stop the spread.

Adam claims that the epidemic left his company stranded forever. He acknowledged that “it was horrible and we were in trouble.” “Our landlord and the bank were closing in on us, and the farm closed.”

Race Across The World star Sam Gardiner’s grieving family overwhelmed after huge donation

Sam and his adopted mum Jo delighted fans with their unbreakable bond as they competed in season two of BBC’s Race Across The World, in which they ventured across South America together

Grieving family of Race Across The World’s Sam Gardiner ‘overwhelmed’ after £10,000 donated

The family of Race Across The World contestant Sam Gardiner have given a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for the outpouring of love and support they received, after his tragic death last month. As they grieve for their son, his parents have told fans how grateful they are, after more than £10,000 was donated to a fundraising campaign set up in his memory.

The 24-year-old, who competed in the BBC One series alongside his mother Jo, died in a horror car crash last month. A JustGiving page launched by his family, in aid of National FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder), has so far raised more than £10,000.

His devastated mum Jo said: “We have been overwhelmed by the tens of thousands of messages of love and support on social media and in comments to press reporting. We would like to thank the BBC, Studio Lambert and everyone at Race Across The World production, fellow contestants and fans of the show for all their support at this terrible time.

“It has been very comforting to know that Sam touched so many people. I have been particularly moved by all the messages that Sam was an inspiration to many who have been impacted by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

“We adopted Sam and he was diagnosed with FASD. As viewers of season two will recall, this was a big challenge both for Sam and for us as his parents.

“National FASD helped us on that journey. If some good comes of this tragedy, it will be that FASD is better understood.”

Sam was involved in the devastating road accident last week when his vehicle dramatically careered off the A34 on Monday, 26 May, rolling and ending up on its side, confirmed Greater Manchester Police. He sadly died on May 29 from his injuries.

Broadcast in March 2020, Sam and Jo ventured across Mexico and Argentina as part of the second series of the BBC show. Mr Gardiner’s father Andrew described Sam as a “beloved son, a cherished brother, and a truly unforgettable soul”.

He said: “When the news broke last week, friends asked how they could help. After some thought, I decided to set up a JustGiving page to raise money for National FASD in memory of Sam. The page is called Sam Gardiner; Super Human.

“I set the target at £500 thinking a few friends might be generous enough to make a donation. So far it’s raised 20 times that. It’s very humbling to see the RATW family rally to this worthy cause.”

The National Organisation for FASD says on its official website that it “provides support to people with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, their families and communities, campaigns to raise public awareness, and promotes relevant policies and practices”.

The website also describes FASD as resulting “when prenatal alcohol exposure affects the developing brain and body.” It says: “FASD is a spectrum. Each person with FASD is affected differently.

“While more than 400 conditions can co-occur, FASD is at its core a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition. All people with FASD have many strengths. Early diagnosis and appropriate support are essential, especially for executive functioning.”

A message on the official National FASD Instagram account said: “Sam lived his life full of love, exuberance and adventure as seen on BBC’s Race Across the World. National FASD is both humbled and honoured to help carry on his legacy via donations coming from hundreds.” A private funeral will be held later this month.
