Massive police swoop in FCT nets record 1,611 suspects, 21 stolen vehicles recovered

In its ongoing crackdown on crime and criminals’ hideouts, the FCT Police Command said it has recovered 21 stolen vehicles and apprehended 1,611 suspects through coordinated operations in April 2025, Persecondnews reports.

FCT Police Commissioner Ajao Adewale disclosed this at a media briefing at the command headquarters on Friday in Abuja, where he advised car owners to adopt basic safety measures such as installing tracking devices, pedal locks, and steering wheel locks to prevent vehicle theft.

The operations, he said, were driven by intelligence and aimed at tackling the growing incidents of car theft and drug-related crimes in the FCT.

According to Adewale, the command’s targeted raids on blackspots and hideouts, backed by other security agencies and vigilante groups, yielded arrests of suspects involved in diverse crimes.

The police boss also disclosed that 15 suspects were arrested in connection with car theft incidents, and out of the 21 recovered vehicles, six have been returned to their owners, while 15 vehicles were showcased during the press briefing.

Elaborating on the arrests, Adewale said: “On April 11, police operatives attached to the Central Police Station intercepted a 1999 Toyota Camry, popularly known as “pencil light,” being driven suspiciously near the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission. The driver, Hassan Bukar, attempted to escape but was apprehended.

“Investigations revealed that the vehicle had been stolen from the Commission’s premises. A bunch of master keys used in vehicle theft was recovered from the suspect, who confessed to plans of selling the car in Kaduna State.

“In another case, on April 10, one Daniel James reported to the police that his mechanic, Abdulazeez Auwal Salisu, had disappeared with his 2011 Toyota Camry. The car was traced to a buyer in Gwarinpa, and the suspect, Alex Lucky Ologhosele, was arrested. The vehicle was recovered, while Abdulazeez remains at large.

“Also, on March 4, the Command recovered an official Hilux vehicle that had been stolen by its assigned driver, Abubakar Sadio. The driver had driven the vehicle away on March 3 and was apprehended in Kaduna while trying to sell it. Another unregistered Hilux was also found in his possession.

“On April 28, five men attempting to sell a stolen Mercedes Benz E-400 were arrested in Life Camp. The suspects Suleiman Idris, Isyaku Habibu, Ganiyu Sadiq, Idowu Akintunde, and Bello Muyideen were caught after a potential buyer alerted police about the suspicious transaction. The vehicle was confirmed to have been stolen from Lagos.

“The Command also carried out massive anti drug raids between April 30 and May 1. A total of 1,488 suspects were arrested in a joint operation with the Army, local hunters, and other security outfits. These operations took place in several high crime zones within the FCT.

“Exhibits recovered during these raids include large quantities of cannabis, methamphetamine, tramadol, codeine, ziphanol, Exol, diazepam, and other narcotics. Non-drug items recovered include 149 mobile phones, 14 laptops, 10 tablets, 109 ATM cards, 15 motorcycles, 10 POS machines, and two generator sets.”

The police commissioner praised the joint effort of all security agencies and urged residents to view security as a collective responsibility while reiterating the importance of sharing timely information with the police and remaining vigilant in their neighborhoods.

He said: “During our investigations, we observed that many criminals use sophisticated tools to bypass car security systems. Simple devices like tracking systems can deter them or aid recovery. I want to strongly urge residents to install car trackers. These devices are no longer luxury they are a necessity in today’s security environment.

“It is important to know who your neighbor is and what they do. This awareness can help in preventing crimes.”

The commissioner reiterated the Command’s dedication to enhancing security in the FCT, stating that all suspects will be prosecuted once investigations are finalized.

Breaking: Bamise Murder Case: Lagos BRT Driver Condemned to Death Three Years After

The long-awaited justice has finally been served as the killer of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, a 22-year-old girl murdered by a Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, Andrew Ominikoron, was on Friday sentenced to death by hanging.

Justice Sherifat Sonaike of the Lagos State High Court, sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square Annexe, handed down the verdict.

Persecondnews had reported that Bamise (Oluwabamise), a young Nigerian unmarried woman who was abducted after boarding a BRT in Lagos on March 1, 2022, was found dead nine days later.

Ominikoron was arraigned on a five-count charge bordering on murder, conspiracy, and rape, in connection with the girl’s death, as well as the sexual assault of Dr. Anosike Victoria and the rape of Maryland Ojiezelu.

He had pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

In her judgment delivered on Friday, Justice Sonaike held that the Lagos State Government had successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

She declared: “For the death of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul.

Poppy’s tears, Elton John & Happy Gilmore – McIlroy on Jimmy Fallon show

Rory McIlroy was already one of the world’s biggest sports stars, but his dramatic Masters victory at Augusta National has taken him to a whole new level.

The ‘ Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon ‘ is one of the key talk shows in the United States.

McIlroy made an appearance on Thursday to discuss everything from his Masters victory to his famous contacts – and even recreated his famous washing machine video from when he was an eight-year-old.

‘ It’s OK dad, they can’t see me crying ‘

A McIlroy went viral before the tournament had even started at Augusta.

However, it wasn’t Rory, but his four-year-old daughter Poppy.

In the Par 3 Contest on the eve of the tournament, Poppy holed a 25-foot putt which sparked wild celebrations from McIlroy, Shane Lowry and everyone who was there to witness it.

Poppy stood on the green, unsure how to react, and got a calming hug from her dad and Erica, her mum.

“I don’t think she anticipated the loud cheer”, said McIlroy, who also credited Poppy for keeping him relaxed before his penultimate round by watching kids ‘ film Zootopia.

“She got a little overwhelmed and started to cry a little bit.

” When we got back to the clubhouse she wanted to see the video. She was studying it, and then said ‘ it’s OK dad, I don’t think they can see me crying’.

‘ In my own world ‘

For years, McIlroy had faced questions over whether he could complete the career Grand Slam.

There had been missed opportunities to claim the iconic green jacket – most notably after an infamous final-round collapse in 2011.

Despite his talent and self belief, the 35-year-old admitted to wondering if he had missed his opportunity.

“You start to think if it is ever going to be your time”, he said.

“I think there’s a good message in there about never giving up and keep coming back.

” Be strong, be resilient and that patience paid off. “

The Northern Irishman held a two-shot lead going into the final round, and said he had learnt lessons from his 2011 collapse, when he let a four-stroke advantage slip away.

” I wanted to make everything else irrelevant. I’m not going to look at what my playing partner is doing, I’m not going to look at the leaderboard.

“I was going to try and get in my own world. If I can shoot four-under-par, I’m going to win the Masters.

” I felt like I lost the Masters in 2011 because I started to look around and started to do maths in my head.

Elton John got in touch – but there was a problem

Unsurprisingly, McIlroy has been contacted by famous people from all walks of life since his win at Augusta.

He said he was “super humbled” by those who had been in touch, but one famous musician stood out.

Sir Elton John needs little introduction – but there was one little problem.

“I actually haven’t been able to connect with him yet. His assistant left me a voicemail and said Sir Elton would love to congratulate me in person.

” The only problem is he doesn’t have a cell phone. They said I might get a call from Windsor in England on a landline, and I was like ‘ sure! ‘.

“I didn’t even know that Elton John knew what golf was, so it’s been really cool”.

Tiger Woods, one of the five other players to complete the Grand Slam, had a simple but very cool message for McIlroy.

Back to the future

McIlroy’s first appearance on a chat show wasn’t in the glitz and glamour of New York, but a local TV programme in his native Northern Ireland.

When he was just eight years of age, McIlroy showcased his talents by chipping balls into a washing machine on ‘ Kelly’, replicating what he used to do in his kitchen in Holywood.

He recreated that moment with Fallon in a race to three successful chips. The pressure was on, as he had the famous green jacket on.

“As the Masters champion I absolutely should not lose to you”! McIlroy quipped.

‘ A better golfer than actor ‘

Adam SandlerGetty Images

Happy Gilmore is one of the most famous sports movies from the 1990s, and is set for a modern-day sequel that will come out later this year.

It’s a story about an ice hockey player – played by Adam Sandler – who goes on to become the best golfer in the world despite his unique technique and temperament.

McIlroy said he was a huge fan of the original, and is set to make a cameo appearance in the upcoming release.

“Happy Gilmore was the golf movie for me growing up, I can recite almost every line”, McIlroy said.

“The fact I got the opportunity to do that was awesome and Sandler is the absolute best.

Jorginho might return this season after ‘punctured lung’

Jorginho is “recovering well” from a lung injury, according to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who may start playing again this year.

The 33-year-old made his final appearance on April 12 when he was taken off in the final few minutes of Brentford’s 1-1 draw with a suspected chest injury.

Arteta said: “It got a little more complicated than expected” before Saturday’s Premier League game against Bournemouth (17:30 BST). He’s recovering well, and he’s fine.

The Italian’s injuries have been reported by sources, but Arsenal have not confirmed any details.

Arteta added that if everything turns out well in the next week or so, he might see his vice-captain playing once more this year.

Jorginho is about to leave Arsenal’s final weeks of his contract before the new year.

Since joining Chelsea in a £12 million deal in January 2023, the midfielder has made 78 appearances.

After having surgery on his hamstring, Kai Havertz is also making progress toward potentially playing once more this year.

The German international needed surgery after suffering a serious muscle tear during Arsenal’s winter training trip to Dubai in February.

He was scheduled to miss the remainder of the season, but he is recovering well and is now expected to return before the end of the season.

After falling to Paris St-Germain at home on Wednesday, Arsenal will face them in the semifinal match.

‘Runs the currency’ as batting decision looms

Images courtesy of Getty

As the batting lineup for the marquee series against India and Australia later this year is in doubt, England selector Luke Wright said, “runs are the currency.”

Ollie Pope and opener Zak Crawley have been chosen for this month’s one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge.

Jacob Bethell impressed in his first series against New Zealand but is unable to face Zimbabwe because he is in the Indian Premier League, making up for it for both men.

Someone is constantly under pressure or scrutiny from the outside, according to Wright.

“Nothing about this is different. Those boys will do well, without a doubt. We become a better team when they play well.

“Any player is aware that money is in the form of runs. Any batter desires to score runs.

Bethell, 21, batted for New Zealand at number three in each of the three Test matches to make an unexpected half-century.

Wright praised the Warwickshire man, highlighting the advantages of his left-arm spin and the experience gained by opening the batting with India’s Virat Kohli for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, despite missing the Test against Zimbabwe.

England will have to make a decision when Bethell is available for the five-test series against India in June. Crawley and Pope would likely make a good first choice if they wanted him in their XI. Wright mentioned Durham opener Ben McKinney while Cox and Cox are also in Wright’s Trent Bridge Test squad.

The Surrey man’s performance and role in England’s side were both rollercoasters in 2024.

He served as number six, wicketkeeper, opener, and captain at various times. He finished the year with an average of 33.13, which is the lowest by any batter in Tests with three centuries in a calendar year, despite posting a match-winning 196 in the stunning victory over India in Hyderabad.

Contrary to Crawley’s miserable form, Pope at least managed to win 100 in the County Championship this summer.

He was tormented by Matt Henry’s home pace bowling and ended the series with an 8.66, the lowest score by an England opener who has started at least six games in a row.

He was out for six against Middlesex at Lord’s on Friday despite not scoring twice in the first four innings of his Kent appearances.

However, Wright said: “We all know opening the batting in international cricket is incredibly difficult. Crawley has had success against India and Australia. Not many people achieve ultimate success. Formal dips are inevitable.

You want to remain faithful to those who have performed well on that stage. On a typical day, he performs just as well. He’s probably disappointed with his last six months, but that doesn’t mean he can’t have a fantastic summer.

Sam Cook, an uncapped Essex seamer, is selected for the team’s inexperienced pace attack due to other bowlers’ injuries.

Dan Worrall, a Surrey international, might have been considered after winning the England qualifying round, but Wright claimed the selectors have not spoken with him, who had previously played three one-day internationals for Australia.

After recovering from hamstring surgery, Wright added that captain Ben Stokes could play an integral role as an all-rounder under the guidance of Wright.

We’ll need to check whether he doesn’t do too much, Wright said. He has a propensity to sway. We’ll just need to watch him a little to make sure he’s not overdoing it.

In one of England Lions’ two matches against India A at the end of May and the beginning of June, Stokes could improve his bowling.

Jofra Archer, who has recovered from a string of injuries with ease, may be in his place.

If Archer plays for the Lions, it would be his first red-ball game in more than four years, despite Archer’s current IPL status. Additionally, it would mean West Indies would have to play some white-ball matches following the Zimbabwe Test.

We have a plan for Jof, Wright remarked. He keeps ticking everything off week by week. We want to return him to red-ball and test cricket.
